Dillie Keane is one-third of iconic Cabaret trio Fascinating Aida. She is presently in Australia for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, where alongside her partners in song, Liza Pulman and Adèle Anderson, Fascinating Aida will present a 40th anniversary show. Since their first performance together in 1983, the trio have racked-up millions of internet followers, performed in the world's most prestigious venues and have been showered with awards and plaudits galore. Proving they're still in their glorious prime, these mistresses of their craft ring in this four-decade milestone with their trademark diamond-sharp satire, lyrical wit and belligerent sass.  The bare bones of Dillie's life are these. Born Portsmouth 1952. Father a GP. Three much older, very nice siblings who have done nothing but grace the name of Keane and distinguish themselves in every way. Family despaired of Dillie ever conforming.  Educated at Portsmouth High School (very happy) and then at successive Convents of the Sacred Heart (first Hove, where she was miserable but learned remedial curtseying and sang all the time, then Woldingham where she was utterly and completely miserable and still sang all the time). “She'll come to no good, that girl!” opined one of the nuns as her parents took her away after she was expelled.  Safely at university, she drank and shagged and partied like a girl released from a convent and became a leading light of the drama society and ended her first year being elected Miss Elegance, hahaha! After three years of this divinely crazed existence, her mortal frame nearly gave out. A spell in hospital exposed her complete unfitness for the life of a musicologist. As her parents took her away – she was too ill to take her Part 2 and couldn't face doing 5 years of a 4 year degree – her Professor suggested that a career in Stage Management might suit.  Finally, she took control of her life. A spell as secretary to the Deputy MD of a leading advertising firm in London gave her financial independence, and she secretly auditioned for LAMDA. The day she got her acceptance letter was the best day of her life. Having flunked out of university, her parents were reluctant to fork out for 3 more years of further education, so she wrote to anyone she could think of who might help. Eventually, the fabled Jim Slater of Slater Walker stepped in with a scholarship and paid her tuition fees. Her defeated parents agreed to give her £100 per term towards living costs, and she was able to accept her place on the course.  Those three years were a thrilling ride. LAMDA was everything she hoped for and more, though trying to keep body and soul together was wonderfully crazy. She had a stall in the Portobello Road every Saturday, where she and a friend sold handmade shopping bags, aprons and second-hand clothes they'd collected from friends and strangers. She temped in the evenings and throughout the holidays, became an artist's model, did bar work, biked everywhere in London and hitched everywhere else. She also played piano in various hotels, nightclubs and restaurants, and looking back she thinks she must have cut an odd figure with her homemade clothes and Cole Porter songs. Two summer months in Sweden playing piano in a Stockholm nightclub hardened her for the life to come.  Acting jobs followed. Then the songs started popping out. And with the acting jobs, new friends who also sang and were willing to sing her songs. And with all that came the gigs and the birth of Fascinating Aïda.  The Adelaide Festival Centre presents FASCINATING AÏDA - THE 40th ANNIVERSARY SHOW! The role is a unique function because it serves as a key support to the director and production staff during the rehearsal period, and then becomes the figure in charge of the production during the actual performance. The running of the show rests on their shoulders. It's a vital role covering many facets – management of time and staff, delivery of a quality product and harmony in the enormous machinery of a big show.At the helm of many of our big commercial musicals and plays has been Luke Woodham – Luke has overseen the life of many productions throughout Australia – these have included The Book of Mormon, Strictly Ballroom, Mary Poppins, Matilda the musical …… and the theatrical juggernaut, War Horse.A graduate of the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Luke is a native Tasmanian, who hasn't stopped working since graduation, in a variety of projects from corporate to festivals to concert to theatre.Live performance can be a pressured environment and it pays to keep a cool head and a methodical approach – all of which Luke has in spades. It was an insightful conversation delving in to the world of Stage Management … all called by the man on cans … Luke Woodham. STAGES celebrates all the Stage Manager's running our shows around the country today. 100 Women in Insurance

What is the BIBA Conference and why is it such a crucial event on the insurance industry calendar? To what extent are skills from external industries transferrable into insurance careers? How can the mobility of such external skills into insurance roles be better communicated in the current recruitment landscape? In this episode, we're very pleased to be speaking with Emma Chapman, Head of Conference at BIBA. This year's BIBA Conference held in Manchester in May attracted 9000 people across two days. The event aims to unite brokers, insurers, and the wider insurance community to do business, establish and build relationships, and much more. In conversation with Sandra Lewin, Emma discusses how her background in theatre has informed her decision-making in curating and arranging the annual conference over the past eight years. As such, she is a testament to the transferability of skills from seemingly unrelated industries into the wide array of roles available in insurance.   Quote of the Episode “You go to conferences for so many reasons. Number one is to do business, we know that. Fundamentally, people say [that, at BIBA,] they get a month's worth of business done in two days. Brilliant. But what else can you get?” The BIBA Conference is, first and foremost, a springboard for networking, bolstering existing business relationships and fostering new ones. Yet, in a post-COVID landscape in which many people have hybrid work schedules and a more intertwined work-life balance, it is harder to entice people to attend these events. BIBA's first in-person conference after the pandemic was in 2022, and it was a huge success, which can largely be attributed to people's glee at being able to attend such events and network face-to-face. In 2023, Emma and her team faced a challenge of how to improve upon this warm reception, now that hybrid working patterns are seemingly here to stay. They decided to bring a flavour of fun and theatricality to the conference, with puppies available to cuddle at a Wellness Zone, and with a speech from Sir Mo Farah.   Key Takeaways Emma studied a Drama and Theatre Studies degree at Exeter, and went into Stage Management in the West End. After several successful years managing a variety of big productions, she sought a change and became involved in event organising, eventually working for BIBA via an agency before being invited to arrange the conference in-house post-pandemic. Theatre and insurance are undoubtedly very different industries, but Emma's role at BIBA entails a need to put on a spectacle for conference attendees. She argues that her theatre background has significantly informed her work at BIBA, emphasising that if and when you do decide to switch roles or even industries into insurance, your past experience will always be beneficial in one way or another. You should never consider your previous working roles or plans as a barrier to entry or transition within the industry. Emma's daily work at BIBA is extremely varied, but it is ultimately founded upon building and maintaining mutually beneficial business relationships, organisation, and an ability to meet deadlines – all skills she developed in her previous career which are transferrable to and crucial in an insurance career. Indeed, Emma suggests that taking skills from external and ostensibly unrelated industries into insurance is extremely beneficial to ensure a consistent inflow of fresh ideas and perspectives. Emma argues that we must actively combat the common misconception that insurance careers are boring, noting that she's never had an uninteresting day on the job. She emphasises that insurance is something which everyone must experience and engage with from a client perspective. As such, irrespective of which industry one initially works in, everyone is in a strong position to contribute ideas to insurance, as every year, we all have to purchase or renew car insurance, home insurance, life insurance, and so on.   Best Moments/Key Quotes “Because we now live in a semi hybrid world, it takes even more to get people out of their homes. You have to deliver something that you cannot get at home, more so than when everyone was in offices, because everyone was always leaving their home. Everyone was always travelling; it was very easy to go to things after work.”   “What I love about my job is it's so varied. I mean, we organise literally everything to do with the exhibition… So, my day could be, depending on where we are on the lifecycle of the event, it could be signing off on social media, ordering 1000s of chairs, approving budget, briefing contractors, sorting out the advertising, paying for things, booking things. It's a real smorgasbord of things. And that's why I love what I do so much.”   “If you spent some time understanding the insurance industry, you could be an excellent addition, [if you] come with outside ideas. That's what I'm always passionate about: there are these transferable skills in so many different career choices.”   “For example, as an event organiser, someone who does event organising for a pharmaceutical company, something totally different to insurance, but because you are still organising a live event, an engaging thing for delegates, you still need to listen to the feedback, and work out whether what you're giving is what people actually want to receive. They would come with amazing ideas, and vice versa. There almost needs to be this give and take between industries, so that you constantly have fresh ideas coming.”   Resources BIBA – The BIBA Conference wins Best Association Event Award: https://www.biba.org.uk/press-releases/the-biba-conference-wins-best-association-event-award/   About the Guest Emma Chapman is the Head of Conference at BIBA (British Insurance Brokers' Association), leading a team who organises its annual conference. Acceptance Stage Management Matt and Garrett's focus today is on the stages of grief and change, in particular, the stage of acceptance, in which the current real estate market finds itself these days. Together, they discuss the positive side of acknowledging where buyers, sellers, and the general population are in this stage, highlighting that this acceptance leads to the ability to move forward and see the light at the end of the tunnel. Throughout their conversation, our hosts delve into the theme of identifying and attracting true buyers in the real estate industry, and the need to understand the goals, dreams, and aspirations of clients in order to provide them with the right education and opportunities available in the market. They go on to provide valuable insights on the need for real estate agents to be in flow with their buyers, engage with their warm list, and provide quality education and support in order to help clients make informed decisions. As you will hear, the episode also emphasizes the need for agents to focus on attracting real buyers, setting expectations, and maintaining a positive mental attitude in order to achieve access. Categorizing clients based on their buying potential Helping clients in their journey to becoming a buyer Having the right mindset ‘What you focus on expands'  The difference between wanting to be a buyer and actually being a buyer   Quotes: "It's like you can see the light at the end of the tunnel." "I know where we're going. I know what this looks like. I can now drop some of my confusion and move forward." "When it comes down to it, if there is confusion, you can't make a decision, you can't make the purchase." "If you're sitting there with all these 'but buyers can't buy right now'... you might be the killer of your own business." "These people who are having a great quarter right now... they're in really good flow with their people." "They're asking clarifying questions that are related to those buyers' goals of their lifestyle." "Until they actually put pen to paper and write a contract, that's the moment a person is truly turning into a buyer." "And I think it's important to look at your list and say, ‘Do some of these people just not even have the ability of doing that?'" "We do need to be careful about the people that we're dumping our energy into." "Be realistic with them, have some hard conversations, set them up for success." "We want to be attracting in more people right now. This is a highly, highly advantageous market for the referrals through the attraction side of the business." Mark Rubinsky It started by sorting screws and bolts as an apprentice at a Summer Stock Theater in Rhode Island. By High School Mark was designing and turning coffee cans into spotlights, scrounging junkyards for lumber, and building scenery. College brought a paid gig in the Theater Department and work as a carpenter at Trinity Square Repertory Company and finally an escape to NY! First as a stage carpenter, electrician, sometimes handyman and dozens of Showcases. One Showcase paid off when “What's A Nice Country Like You Doing in A State Like This” opened off-Broadway and a PA job became a Stage Management job. Harry Chapin's “Cotton Patch Gospel” was up next, and Stage Management became a career. Other favorites include Kander and Ebb's “2 By 5” at the Village Gate, On Your Toes on the road and “Agnes of God.” “Tap Dance Kid” and “Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway to name a few. (The list is long and that is what LinkedIn is for). In the gaps between shows, Mark worked in “Business Theater” when an AEA Stage Manager was required, and the steady work and large budget became irresistible. Before long, Makr was producing the Business Theater events. As an Executive Producer Mark produced shows and meetings that motivated thousands of franchise owners, sales associates, and business executives to sell hamburgers, planes, bulldozers, computers, TVs, cars, hair dye, candy, and lots and lots of pills. It was a blast! Worked with mad scientists at Bell Labs and took Toyota Engineers on a 25,000-mile caravan across North America stopping at manufacturing plants, dealerships, and scenic byways, to hold events. Over 15 years he produced Canon's Expo and Digital Solutions Forums, which included multiple stages and performances alongside copy machines, cameras, and medical imaging equipment. He supervised the building and installation of Media Labs and Briefing Centers for AT&T and Cisco Systems and Lucent in NY and London. Asked by a friend to produce a commission he had written, Mark jumped at the chance and hired the perfect designer/collaborator for the job, Tony Castrigno. Combining multi-media with live performance, “Alexander Hamilton: In Worlds Unknown” ran for five months at the New York Historical Society in 2004. When a business colleague had an idea for a show with Ballroom Dancers interpreting Rock and Roll music and Mark had to be involved and went on to produce a workshop of Ballroom Rocks and a Tour of They Called it Rock. He currently chairs the Board of Directors of the not-for-profit Works In ProgressNYC. And now with his colleague, friend and now business partner, Tony Castrigno, Mark is dedicating this next era to helping artists realize their work on the stage, and bringing it to audiences, everywhere. Gianna shares her insights on finding her passion and seeing it through as a young person. — “And there's no one way to do anything. And everyone comes to the table with their own strengths and energy and spirit and personality. And don't let anyone take that away from you and don't let anyone make you feel like the skills that you have aren't good enough because they can always be developed and they can always be worked on and you can always learn new things too, but you bring your own spirit to everything.” -Gianna Durante — Generation Hope is a podcast from connect.faith; which is a new worshiping community of the Presbyterian Church (USA) unbound by location coming together at the intersection of creativity, spirituality and justice.
