Ten years ago, I went through a midlife crisis. I didn't buy a Harley or get a tattoo on my neck, but I did start a blog - midlifetribe.com. I knew my depression was rooted in a deep desire for meaning. It emanated from the question, "Why exactly am I doing this?" Once I found it (meaning), many of my troubles evaporated or become, paradoxically, meaningless. But meaning isn’t easy to acquire – at least not directly. Like happiness, it’s actually a byproduct of something else. That's what I cover in this week's episode.

In seeking to answer them, though, I noticed that both are something of a trap, eliciting reflex responses instead of truthful ones. The questions are: 1. What do I value? 2. Who am I living for? They’re simple little questions; less than five words each, yet the answers can have a profound effect on our lives. If we’re not asking them and then thinking deliberately about the answers, life will hand us a bunch of crappy ones.

I still remember the daily rounds where she'd sidle up to each desk with, "Whaaat's happening...?" I also remember the smell of synthetic carpet, chosen more for its longevity under heavy foot traffic than its calm-inducing properties. I remember the acronyms and corporate platitudes that filled our conversations; the gentle hum of fluorescent lighting, and the pale blue palette of cubicles and walls. It was a soul-sucking prison of annual budgets, sales tactics and mechanised behaviours, and after two years, I'd had a gut-full. That was a long time ago, and no amount of money would lure me back to that environment. That's because today I work where, when and how I want. I walk my son to school and pick him up each day. That alone is worth a few $100k to me. But how do you 'earn the right' to escape the office and work from home (or anywhere but the office)?
