Let's know what you liked and learnt! What if more than a century of self-help advice could be distilled into just 12 practical approaches? In this episode of ContraMinds, Swami speaks with clinical psychologist and author Jeremy Stevenson about The 12 Levers, the evidence-based toolkit he co-authored with Dr Spencer Greenberg. After analysing more than 100 self-help books, 23 therapeutic approaches and hundreds of research papers, they discovered that the most useful techniques consistently fall within 12 broad levers.Jeremy shares his journey from international finance to clinical psychology and explains how his own struggles with approval-seeking shaped his interest in self-compassion and social anxiety. The conversation explores why values should come before goals, how to translate those values into everyday action, and why productivity is about more than time and efficiency. Jeremy also discusses the Productivity Equation, VAST goals, habits, choice points, feedback loops, and the connection between the mind and body.A practical conversation for professionals who want to work with greater clarity, make better choices and focus their effort on what genuinely matters. 5 Key Takeaways1. Define your values before setting goals. Goals shaped by other people's expectations rarely remain motivating or fulfilling.2. Productivity is time × efficiency × importance. Working faster matters, but choosing work that genuinely matters can create the greatest improvement.3. Approval-seeking turns interaction into performance. Letting go of constant external validation allows professionals to communicate more authentically and confidently.4. Values become meaningful only through action. Goals, habits, everyday choice points and regular reviews turn guiding principles into observable behaviour.5. Treat personal development as an experiment. Understand the problem, choose an evidence-based technique, test it and adjust based on the results.About JeremyJeremy Stevenson is a clinical psychologist, researcher at Sparkwave and co-author of The 12 Levers, written with mathematician and entrepreneur Dr Spencer Greenberg. Before moving into psychology, Jeremy studied international finance. His work explores practical, evidence-based techniques for understanding behaviour, clarifying personal values, improving productivity and creating meaningful change. In The 12 Levers, he and Spencer distil insights from more than 100 self-help books, multiple therapeutic approaches and hundreds of research papers into one accessible psychological toolkit.Timestamps00:00 Cold Opening05:41 I Wanted to Help Other People Do This07:48 Self-Compassion Can Ease Social Anxiety13:56 100 Self-Help Books, Distilled Into 12 Levers17:30 Approval-Seeking Turns Connection Into Performance21:43 Productivity Means Creating More of What You Value26:31 You Cannot Always Choose What Matters29:23 Your Values Give You Direction34:08 Step Off the Treadmill and Reset41:06 Let Values Come Before Goals48:51 Every Choice Moves You Toward Your Values50:37 Review What You Can Actually Control57:03 Your Mind and Body Are Connected1:02:24 First Understand, Then Intervene#The12Levers, #JeremyStevenson, #Productivity, #Psychology, #PersonalDevelopment, #ProfessionalGrowth, #EvidenceBased, #GoalSetting, #IntrinsicValues, #ContraMindsPodcastThis episode was made possible by the great folks at https://goaffortless.ai.Effortless has been designed to be user-friendly, aiding you in your journey to streamline financial tasks. If you've ever wondered whether you're “too much,” this episode will change how you see your own heart.

And then you slid backwards, and now you're wondering whether any of this works — or whether it just doesn't work for you.In Ep472, Cass and Kathryn explain why reading a self-help book is never a substitute for real-time accountability, and why using a book as proof that you "tried everything" is a dangerous trap.

Evidence-based treatment for eating disorders rightly focuses on restoring health and changing eating disorder behaviours. But what if those behaviours are also protecting something much deeper? What if lasting recovery starts not with asking "What's wrong with me?" but "What happened to me?" In this episode of Let's Talk, Beth talks with clinical psychologist and schema therapy expert Dr Susan Simpson about her new book Breaking Negative Eating Patterns and Remembering Your True Self, which offers a compassionate new way of understanding eating disorders. Drawing on more than 25 years of clinical experience, Susan explains how eating disorders can develop as intelligent coping strategies that protect us from shame, loneliness, unmet emotional needs and painful life experiences. Susan explores the core ideas behind schema therapy, including our different "parts", the role of the inner critic, and how reconnecting with our authentic self can reduce the need for eating disorder behaviours. She also walks through the four-stage recovery journey outlined in her book, shares practical exercises listeners can try, and explains how clinicians and people with lived experience can use the book alongside evidence-based treatment. It's a hopeful conversation about understanding the story behind your struggles, reconnecting with yourself, and discovering that recovery is about far more than changing eating behaviours. AI is forcing us to define what being human is. So, did our host, an art curator and writer, dare to create a Manifesto? Awkward? Or are we not used to women proclaiming things? How can art–seemingly at the brink of commodification–bear new forms of being human? Or is does it spotlight you, art wanderer? The self-help book "Tiny Experiments " by Anne-Laure Le Cunff sparked this art question: why did it excite such a meditative exploration of the role of art, and its urgent proclamation? What if the thing hurting you most isn't what happened — but the meaning you gave it?In this episode, Esther shares the quiet truth her Tony Robbins coach taught her: you are the one who assigns meaning to every silence, every setback, every ordinary morning. And if you assign it, you can change it.Through raw, real stories — 22 years in an orchestra, the silence with her two sons, the distance with her father and brother — she shows how we write the very stories that break our hearts, and how to gently write new ones.If you've been carrying a weight you didn't know you were putting there yourself, this one's for you.DO YOU WANT TO GET COACHED BY ESTHER?✨ Book a free Discovery Call: https://swissmadestory.ch/coaching✨ Follow Esther on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/esther_buerki✨ Join Esther on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/esther.buerki1✨ Connect with her on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/estherbuerki✨ Stay connected with her: https://swissmadestory.ch/stay-in-touch/✍️ Get in touch with her through e-mail: contact@swissmadestoryBOOKS:
On Tuesday, the House passed a comprehensive housing affordability bill 358–32, sending the measure to President Donald Trump to sign into law. The bill, titled the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, seeks to increase housing supply by rolling back construction regulations, expanding financing options, and restricting institutional investors from purchasing single-family homes in most circumstances. The Senate voted 85–5 to pass the bill on Monday. After originally scheduling a signing ceremony today, Trump announced he would cancel the signing until Congress passes the SAVE America Act. He has not indicated that he would veto the bill.Ad-free podcasts are here!To listen to this podcast ad-free, and to enjoy our subscriber only premium content, go to ReadTangle.com to sign up!A conversation with Tim Urban. Why are otherwise intelligent people unable to resist falling into echo chambers, and how do some get out? Ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have broken through in primary races for local and national seats. Headlined by figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), democratic-socialist candidates have challenged incumbents in strongly Democratic areas, seeking to pull the party toward more progressive positions on key issues. ONE THOUSAND), interviewed hundreds of authors and wellbeing experts, and built a global community inspiring 25,000+ to read, reflect, and apply self-development. And now she has written a book - published by the brilliant The Pound Project - called YOU (The Beginner's Guide), which distils the most important lessons from that decade immersed in the world of self-help. But not only that, she herself has developed a three-step framework designed to help people get to know themselves better and design lives they get to really enjoy - and hearing her talk about this three-step framework got me so excited to read and DO the book.So dive in and join us for this juicy conversation - my first Substack Live! You're still showing up. But are you leading with clarity — or just holding it together? Take 15 minutes to reflect with the Christian Leader® Self-Assessment — a simple tool to help you see what's really working... and what's quietly wearing you out. It's free!https://www.ryanfranklin.org/clselfassessment Ryan shares a perspective on time management that reshaped his leadership more than any productivity system or self-help book ever could. Drawing directly from Scripture and personal experience, Ryan explains why most pastors and leaders do not struggle with time because they lack discipline, but because they lack clarity and vision. He walks through how vision drift quietly happens, why busyness is a poor measure of obedience, and how biblical stewardship reframes time as a servant to calling, not an enemy to fight. You will hear how clarifying God-given vision, creating intentional rhythms, and focusing on faithful next steps can restore energy, peace, and direction. Winter is the quiet season where real growth happens. In this episode, I break down why self-help books actually work when you read them with intention, not just for motivation. We'll talk about how to turn winter downtime into personal and business growth, why most people get nothing from the books they read, and how to apply what you learn so it actually sticks. I'll also share my personal winter reading list and explain why each book has earned a spot as I prepare for the season ahead. GROW 2026 - February 10-12 Dallas, TX: https://hubs.li/Q03Ybxs10
