Finding right-fit clients is one of the never-ending juggling acts of agency ownership. We need to keep the pipeline full, but we don't want to rely only on referrals or say yes to clients who don't fit our niche or values. The solution lies in how you build and maintain relationships. Not just any type of relationship — relationships that are aligned with the mission, vision, and values of the agency. On this week's episode, Matthew Kimberley shares his expertise in finding right-fit clients through tactics like the Red Velvet Rope Policy, which makes it clear who you are (and aren't) for. His strategies make it simple to get clear on your right-fit client criteria so you can focus on working only with those who excite you. As any good agency owner knows, we're in the relationship business. So Matthew also shares how to nurture relationships with clients and prospects once you dial in on who you want to serve. This episode serves as a good reminder that even though building and nurturing relationships with right-fit clients might seem like a simple concept, we can always take the opportunity to reevaluate who we want to work with and how to go after them. And I help them marry their desire to make a decent living from their technical skill with the ability to actually make a decent living. So, they have the desire, and I show them the processes, the skills and the knowledge that they need to have in place. And I try to keep things as simple as possible.” (06:34) (Matthew) “There is absolutely no question that there's a direct correlation between meaningful sales activity - asking people, ‘Would you be interested in buying my thing? Would you be interested in sitting down and talking about this opportunity? Are you in the market for? - and how many sales you make. The old adage from Glengarry Glen Ross that we should ‘Always Be Closing' is nonsense. We should always be opening. We should always be creating opportunity. And creating opportunity is as easy as asking, ‘Are you interested?'” (09:55) (Matthew) “Nobody ever gets offended, ever, when you say, ‘Would you be interested in buying my thing?' People get offended when you don't listen to their answer.” (16:14) (Matthew) “The temptation for many people - especially at the beginning of their sales journey - is to invest a lot of opportunity in anybody who expresses interest.” (21:52) (Matthew) “We can all improve the quality of our lives by recognizing that if we ask for something, there is a much higher possibility of us receiving it. And, you can apply this to your actions as a buyer as well as your actions as a seller.” (32:05) (Matthew) “Anybody who decides that they will learn selling can make a living. In any economy, there will always be supply and demand requirements. If you can sell, then you'll never go hungry. And if you can remember that, it can be an awful lot of fun.” (38:51) (Matthew)Guest ResourcesTom's LinkedInTom's WebsiteTom's Training programMatthew's LinkedInMatthew's WebsiteMatthew's Instagram

Take the risk!    “If you are saying should I? Could I? May I put this out there? Go for it!” According to our guest, Matthew Kimberley, nothing will change if you are hesitating to take that big leap. So better ask yourself “what's the worst thing that could happen?” Taking the first step to start or opening new chapters for your business is a scary step but for him, it's better than not doing anything. Creating and putting up your business from scratch takes time and it needs a strategic process to thrive.   Tune in to our episode with Matthew Kimberly as he shares personal experiences and tips for a more successful entrepreneurial journey! Who is Matthew Kimberley?    Matthew Kimberley is the CEO and one of the great minds behind Go Book Yourself. His company trains business owners on how to expand their businesses.    He has been in the industry for over 20 years. Matthew is a  sales consultant who had worked with different entrepreneurs. He has witnessed growth and downfall from different phases of his life. Matthew likes to build relationships with the connections he has made. He works directly with service providers. According to him, he is fond of working with people who like to make this world a better place. Working with people who want to make the world a better place has always been one of the aspects that drive him to continue moving forward.   Go Book Yourself Solid, Matthew Kimberly Teaches   Go Book Yourself Solid focuses on helping business owners make more money and have fun doing it. The book discusses different marketing strategies and techniques.   According to Matthew, people have two criteria when choosing a service provider. The first one is if the person or business can help them or not. The second one is if they can trust these people once they work with them. Customers tend to trust a business if they share the same initiatives.   Go Book Yourself Solid focuses on the important aspects of marketing which can help you gain more customers. Marketing establishes a business' brand identity. It's a domino effect as marketing creates awareness, awareness gives opportunity, and opportunity turns to trust giving you a chance in sales that you can lose or earn.   Matthew's Perspective   Many entrepreneurs know that a good relationship can change negatively if it's not nurtured. Matthew pointed out that support from people in your network is also important. Successful entrepreneurs wouldn't be where they are if it wasn't for the people who believed, supported, and helped them in their journey.    Insightful Quotes   “Confidence is not the same as enthusiasm, you might be scared witless because you don't have the confidence it'll work out”   “Think of the worst-case scenario and take responsibility for your action. If you have the responsibility to put food on the table, think of what will happen if this doesn't work out… But if you live through a worst-case scenario then you can pull through but if not, (you might have to re-evaluate your decision.)”   “What's the worst case that can happen? Can I live with it? Take a big risk. If you are saying should I? Could I? May I put this out there? Go for it!  Show up repeatedly, and don't worry about looking foolish in the eyes of the market. Swing for the hills and go and take those big risks!” Chapter stamps:    00:52 Matthew Kimberley 04:11 What Makes Go Book Yourself Solid Unique 10:10 Three Suggestions to Gain Trust 16:30 Be Organic as Business is like a love story 21:00 Recommendation for people who hesitates 25:07 Matthew's Superpower 28:07 Last Advice Website: https://www.linkedin.com/company/bookyourselfsolid/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bookyourselfsolid/  Website: https://matthewkimberley.com/  Matthew Kimberley: https://www.linkedin.com/services/page/400a99309aa1597199/ Twitter (Personal): https://twitter.com/mjkimberley

When you're running a coaching business, it's tempting to think you have to bend over backward to meet your client's schedule. Whenever you meet somebody at a cocktail party, how do you introduce yourself and explain what you do in your coaching business? Do you tell people that you're someone who helps “people who are tired of thinking small and guide them into unleashing their fullest potential”? Or do you say you're a management consultant who “helps executives increase stakeholder engagement through increased inter-departmental synergy”? How would you feel if a complete stranger introduced themselves that way to you? Chances are, you'd feel very confused. And confusing people is the last thing coaches would want to do. So reserve those flowery words for your LinkedIn profile or the cover of your book and instead, offer your potential clients your Single Biggest Result. In this episode, I discuss why putting into words what you do for a living is of utmost importance if you want people to understand what you offer in your coaching business. I explain why my father says he's a departmental head at the NHS when, specifically, he's a hospital chaplain. I reveal critical errors beginner coaches make when they introduce themselves as a coach. I also highlight the impact of specializing your business and emphasize the power of anchoring on the Single Biggest Result you can offer to your clients.  “Ensure that the Single Biggest Result that you offer to your clients is measurable, externally verifiable, and tangible.” - Matthew Kimberley  This week on Book Yourself Solid® Marketing For Coaches Podcast: The critical importance of having a well-defined target market for your business Identifying a target market's specific set of urgent needs and compelling desires The “Supermarket Checkout Line Test” and the struggles of beginner coaches in talking about what they do The problem with using a generic label to describe what you do as a coach How defining your Single Biggest Result can help you avoid being a commodity in your business Avoiding the use of industry jargon when selling yourself to people Helping empowered goddesses step into their greatness...and why you shouldn't try to sound ethereal Why you shouldn't use branding sentences when talking about your coaching business Hanging our hats on something tangible, measurable, and verifiable The impact of specializing your business and associating other benefits to your Single Biggest Result Resources Mentioned: Book Yourself Solid Get More Clients in 60 Days! Seven years ago, Mrs. Kimberley gave birth to our son Edward, a bouncing baby boy with curly hair and a big, bright smile. We enjoyed the first three months with him, wallowing in his brilliance and beauty, as all parents do, as he did things for the first time. Then, a visit to the pediatrician disrupted our world and turned it upside-down: we had to move from Malta back to the UK, stay there for a few months, and I - distraught as my child's life hung in the balance - couldn't show up to my coaching business. If you, as a coach, were in my situation, how would you react? If you had to wade through uncertainty, would your coaching business be able to keep you afloat? In this episode, I share a peek behind the scenes of my life as a coach seven years ago. I share the story of Edward's battle through a heart defect and how Mrs. Kimberley and I took care of him through his recovery. I discuss how this crisis impacted us and my coaching business. I explain why the difference between a coaching job and a coaching business matters. I also discuss how I communicated to my clients the situation I was in and illustrate how an act of kindness helped me overcome a very challenging time in our lives. “Professional coaches claim to be business owners when what they actually have are coaching jobs that require their attendance to get paid. That can be a dangerous position.” - Matthew Kimberley  This week on Book Yourself Solid® Marketing For Coaches Podcast: The birth of Edward, our bouncing baby boy Discovering Edward's heart defect and our return to the UK Managing Edward's recovery while taking care of Sam, our older son The difference between having a coaching job versus a coaching business Why having a coaching job is dangerous if you're the family breadwinner Communicating to my coaching clients and community my situation How an act of kindness kept me afloat at a time where I couldn't show up as a coach The uncertainty of relying on a single client A question you need to ponder upon as a coach Get More Clients in 60 Days! It's easy to say that you should pursue potential clients that are already in your orbit, but how do you create that orbit? What you need is an Always-Have-Something-to-Invite-People-To Offer. Today, I discuss this strategy. I talk about how important it is to have a ready event where the people in your community can interact with you. I discuss why this interaction doesn't need to be a teaching, pick-your-brain moment (although it can be), and why it doesn't even have to be related to the service you offer. I also give a couple of examples to drive the point home, including one about a chiropractor starting a sports fan club.   “All [the chiropractor] has to do in order to stay connected with his target market is show up, drink beer, and watch football games.” - Matthew Kimberley   This week on Book Yourself Solid® Marketing For Coaches Podcast: The Always-Have-Something-to-Invite-People-To Offer Why these events don't always have to be linked directly to the service you offer How to stay connected with potential clients   Mentioned Resources: Book Yourself Solid Five Things You Need To Do Every Morning To Get You More Clients In 60 Days     Get More Clients in 60 Days! Clients tend to fall into one of three categories: the ideal ones, who energize you and are exciting to work with; the midrange ones, who aren't so great but they're not bad either; and the duds. What do you do about the duds? Today, I talk about why you don't need to keep your dud clients. In life and in coaching, we have a tendency to try to please everybody, and while it's your job to please your clients, if you have to sacrifice yourself to do it then sometimes it's not worth it. After all, you--not so much your product--are the reason people do business with you. Today I talk about why you should be yourself. He's back! You may remember Matthew Kimberley from when he was first on the show in January 2020. We met a few years ago when we spoke back to back at Todd Herman's event and then were on a panel together. Maybe it's because we share the same initials, work in a similar niche, or because of his mellifluous voice, but I wanted to have him back on the show for another conversation.   Matthew is the host of the new podcast, Marketing for Coaches, and the author of How to Get a F*cking Grip. He is also one of the managing partners with Book Yourself Solid where he trains and certifies business coaches.   In this episode, we dive into what marketing for coaches should look like. I am a marketer and a coach, so you could say I fit right into his target audience. We also talk about how coaches can get more clients with (or without) marketing, along with:   The correlation between coaching and marketing. The three business currencies and the one that Matthew relies on the most. The importance of building a professional network and creating relationships with people that will lead you to paying clients.   Resources: Marketing for Coaches Podcast   Connect with Mike: https://mikekim.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/mikekimtv/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikekimtv Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/mikekimtv/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/mikekimtv YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/MikeKim   *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment.   He helps thought leaders, influencers, executives, HR professionals, recruiters, lawyers, realtors, bloggers, coaches, and authors create, launch, and produce podcasts that grow their business and impact the world. Clients tend to fall into one of three categories: the ideal ones, who energize you and are exciting to work with; the midrange ones, who aren’t so great but they’re not bad either; and the duds. What do you do about the duds? Today, I talk about why you don’t need to keep your dud clients. I discuss the importance of the energy you and your clients give each other, and why, if you’re not getting much out of your meetings, they probably aren’t either. I discuss the difference between moving at the speed of the slowest and encouraging everyone to move at the speed of the leader. I also share a basic script that might come in handy when you’re figuring out how to let go of your dud clients. “We think an awful lot about obligations towards our clients, but we don’t think so frequently about our clients’ obligations towards us.” - Matthew Kimberley  This week on Book Yourself Solid® Marketing For Coaches Podcast: The energy exchange between you and your clients The three types of clients Why you should move at the speed of the leaders A handy script for firing a dud client Mentioned Resources: Five Things You Need To Do Every Morning To Get You More Clients In 60 Days  Get More Clients in 60 Days! When we think of attracting clients into our business, we immediately think of marketing. But not for Matthew Kimberley, the owner of Book Yourself Solid, who believes that marketing does not get you clients. In this episode, he joins John Livesay to explain to us this contrarian idea as inspired by Michael Port's Book Yourself Solid, a handbook for self-promotion that can help you get more clients even if you hate marketing and selling. He discusses the effectiveness of emails and how best to format them, growing a personality-based brand, and becoming a person of value rather than a provider of value. We focus quite a bit on visibility on STANDOUT, of course - on things you can do to be seen as an expert in your field. Over the past 50 episodes, we've talked about PR, podcasts, video marketing, content marketing and speaking, just to name a few of the topics. It's so gratifying to get your message out to more people. But, if you're a business owner, all that visibility doesn't do much unless it results in sales. I'd love to get your take on this. We can discuss it in the STANDOUT Facebook community, a truly wonderful group of business owners and marketers. Click here to join it. Most people come to me to get help raising their visibility, because they feel that visibility will get them more clients and customers. It can certainly do that, and my next guest says that good marketing makes the sales job a lot easier. But what happens if that is not the result? What if the sales machine is broken? I'm thrilled today to introduce all of you to Matthew Kimberley. I have no idea where I heard of Matthew first, probably on a podcast somewhere and I immediately signed up for his email list. His emails are entertaining, motivational and I learn so much about what you need to do to be successful in sales. And remember, you don't have a business unless you have sales. As you'll hear in this episode, Matthew has a long history in sales. He is the former head of the Book Yourself Solid School of Coach training and is the creator of the School for Selling. This is an episode you might want to come back to, as Matthew shares quite a bit, his systematic process for creating confidence in selling, how a job as a timeshare salesman helped shape how he approaches selling today - it's not what you think - and he gives us a checklist you can use over and over again to guarantee sales in your business. What you'll learn in this episode: *How to become an order taker in sales*How Matthew developed his very systematic approach to sales*The step-by-step system Matthew uses and teaches to grow sales from scratch*What needs to happen to create confidence in the selling process Links mentioned in this episode: *The School for Selling*Matthew's free guide: 5 things you need to do every morning to get more clients in 60 days Did you enjoy the show? Join us, each week, as we teach you how to flip your lifestyle upside-down, by selling stuff online. Are you ready for something different? All right, let's get started. SHANE: What's going on guys? Welcome back to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast; we have got another Expert Q&A on the show today with you, and we are excited to bring back one of our favorite guests; it is Matthew Kimberley of matthewkimberley.com. Matthew welcome back to the show. MATTHEW: Thank you for having me back, Shane and Jocelyn. JOCELYN: Yeah, we are really excited to have you. Today we have a question from, now I'm going to try this, Olgierd, and we actually looked this up online, how to pronounce this and that is the Kentucky pronunciation – SHANE: O-L-G-I-E-R-D [Unclear] or something, I'm not sure. JOCELYN: Yeah, we are so sorry, Olgierd; I think that's right. Okay, so it says, “I have a question related to markets size. I have a solution for an industry with about 100 or 200 prospects. Should I contact each individual person in my market, or build a sales funnel to attract them, or is this market size even worth it?” SHANE: This was a very interesting question Matthew; Olgierd is actually a member of our Flip Your Life community. If you would like to learn more about that, you can flippedlifestyle.com/flipyourlife and he really has fleshed out this and he is in an industry that is kind of B2B and it's more like a furniture industry. So we've been helping him kind of sort through his avatar and his sales funnel in our forums, and he really only has about 200 companies that he can reach. But I think they are all going to be pretty big contracts if he did follow through with whatever services he is providing. So what do you think about that? Is this worth it? With that few people, should he just go ahead and try and contact them or is there some other form of marketing that might work here? MATTHEW: Okay, so it's a two-part question. Let's deal with the last one first, “Is the market size even worth it?” You got to do your math in order to work out whether or not it's going to be worthwhile. You know, work out what the average lifetime value of a decent customer would be, test it against whether your projections are true or not, perhaps with your first and then second customer, and then move on. But certainly, I would say how many clients do you need? You are in the furniture industry, no other context perhaps you need, five clients, six clients, ten clients in order to have a sustainable business. Perhaps it would be great if you had 200; I don't know. There are probably only a handful of aircraft engine manufacturers in the world, probably fewer than a hundred, I'd say, but there are going to be some people who are making a full-time living for their families and their employees on the back of just serving two or three of those companies. SHANE: And you said something – let me jump in real quick just for our listeners, the lifetime value of a customer basically boils down to how often they pay you; like frequency. Like if you sell one thing for 300 dollars and you never sell that person anything again, the lifetime value is 300.

MATTHEW: Thanks for having me, Shane and Jocelyn. JOCELYN: Yeah, we are happy that you're here. Today's question is from a Flip Your Life community member, JJ Mayo and JJ says, “I've posted before that as a side hustle, I'm a speaker for a continuing education company albeit making a small portion of my total sales. I'll be interested to know from Matthew, what steps are needed to get higher paid speaking gigs even if I'm not a celebrity. Is it having the right contacts or some system that needs to be followed? Any resources would be excellent.” SHANE: And this is a special planted question just for Matthew Kimberley. Matthew Kimberley is all about booking yourself solid. He's one of the best, live speakers that we have ever seen, so when we knew you were coming back on this show, we went into our premium Flip Your Life membership community and we said, ‘Hey guys, we're gonna give you first dibs on our expert question.' This was one of the first ones that popped up, was just how do I get move live speaking gigs when nobody knows about me. What a perfect question for you. So, how do you do that man? How do you get on stage when maybe nobody knows who you are? MATTHEW: Okay, so I'm gonna presume here and correct me if I'm wrong that when I talk about higher paid speaking gigs, we are talking about getting paid to speak; not getting paid because you are selling from the stage, or because you speak and people book you on the back end; am I right? SHANE: Exactly, JJ wants to speak, like he wants to be a paid speaker, he's not gonna pitch, he's gonna deliver valuable content in this space, he just wants to get more of those gigs and get paid more to do them. MATTHEW: Absolutely; well, I know a few things about this, but not least because my business partner Michael Port is the founder of Heroic Public Speaking, and that's the first resource I think you should check out. Go to heroicpublicspeaking.com and have a look at the stuff that we've put together there for you. At the Hero Public Speaking live in Fort Lauderdale last February, we had this question asked of our expert panel, and they were people like Bob Burg and Scott Stratten and Dorie Clark on the panel. And Dorie said, there are various steps to your speaking career, and I can't remember whether there were three or four, but I'm gonna go through them as I remember them; the first step as a speaker is: 1. When you want to speak but nobody wants to hear you speak, and nobody will pay you to speak. So, first step is no one wants you to speak and nobody will pay you to speak. 2. People are happy to have you speak, but they still don't want to pay you. 3. People will happily have you speak and they'll pay you a little bit. 4. Yes, you must speak and yes, we'll pay you whatever you want.

JOCELYN: Hey y'all! You're listening to an Expert Q&A with S&J. Today's expert is Matthew Kimberley at matthewkimberley.com. Welcome back to the Expert Q&A with S&J podcast. This is our Thursday edition where we bring on experts to answer your questions. Jocelyn and I always say, we do not have all the answers but boy, we get all the questions. So we like to pass these on to people that know more about certain subjects than we do. And we have an amazing guest for you today, a guy that we met just a couple of weeks ago, in the Philippines, at Chris Ducker's ‘Tropical Think Tank' event. One of the best speakers we have ever seen and a real guy that knows how to book yourself solid. It is Matthew Kimberley from Matthewkimberley.com. Matthew welcome to the Flipped Lifestyle podcast. MATTHEW: Great to be here, S&J. Thank you for having me. SHANE: Yeah, we are so glad you are here because we are clueless about some of these questions, especially the one we've got for you today. So Jocelyn, let's throw Matthew a question here. JOCELYN: Alright, this question is from Sam and Sam says, “There's so much information out there that I find it hard to differentiate myself. How do I make my blog stand out in the crowd and make it unique? I'm talking about a subject that is well-covered by many others. Why would anyone listen to me?” SHANE: This is a great question Matthew because, you know, we think about this all the time because really, when you think about it, every issue is pretty well covered on the internet. So how do you make yourself stand out in such a crowded world that we live in these days? MATTHEW: Sure, absolutely great question and the first thing that comes to mind is don't worry at all about the content. It's great that there's information out there, it's great that other people are talking about what you are talking about because if they weren't, there's probably a reason for that. So, if you find that you are the only person talking about something, unless it's brand new and very, very, very little – is brand spanking new, then that's validation. That's external validation. If other people are talking about vacuum repair, then that means that other people are listening to other people talk about vacuum repair. So that's great, good job, there's other information out there. Now, how do you differentiate yourself and how do you make your blog stand out? There's a couple of ways that I would go about doing this and a couple of ways that I would advise my clients that they could go about doing it. The first one is, you. Okay, so the information that you are presenting is standard, it exists elsewhere, but you are the only person who can deliver it the way that you can deliver it. Many of us, when we adopt a public persona, we water down the really interesting parts of our self. SHANE: Right. MATTHEW: We often say this in corporate emails, both from companies to their mailing lists, but also people when they are wearing their professional hats; here where I live in Malta in the Mediterranean,
