If you find yourself weary and overwhelmed this Christmas season, I want to invite you to come and listen to our season finale and special Christmas episode. While there is so much fun and joy that comes with the gathering, gift-giving, and seeing this season through our kid's eyes, I'm most excited about our family's newest Christmas tradition. It's called Advent. Advent is the practice of contemplating God's arrival into the world through the life of Jesus and the anticipation of his return. In this episode, you'll hear some of my own story intersecting motherhood, loss, and faith through the mystery of advent. The stories shared involve a ton of waiting and a lot of hope! I share how God met me in my grief and helped me through and out of my pain. His hope and comfort are like none other and what so many of us need more of right now! Come find encouragement for your soul today and enjoy this holiday season! If I told you that as a pregnant mama, your prenatal nutrition affects the long-term health of not only you and your baby but even your grandchildren-would you believe me? While it sounds a little crazy, the research supports this! What an incredible gift we have the chance to give our growing families. Yet it is still so easy to get food confused in our society. That's why I've invited registered dietician and nutritionist, Lily Nichols to help us understand why many of the prenatal nutritional recommendations offered are actually outdated. We're talking about the importance of including real food in your diet, why protein is mama's top priority and some easy ways to get the most nutrients to you and that growing baby! Let's dive in! I'm so excited to share my son, Ari's, home birth story with you! As challenging as his home birth was, I wouldn't change a thing about this story. In this episode, I am sitting down with my hubby Caleb and our brilliant midwife, Mary Yaganawa to tell Ari's home birth story collectively. It's hard to believe it happened just eight weeks ago! This labor and birth was long and full of complex hurdles, but also a ton of laughter and SO much joy. If you're curious about what it's like to give birth at home this is a great episode for you. I've even included a slideshow highlighting the precious moments of our birth in the show notes. I hope this Voices of Motherhood conversation encourages you to know that no matter what your birth looks like it can be beautiful, hard, and empowering all at the same time. Facing the unexpected in your pregnancy or birth can lead to a lot of fear and anxiety for a mama. That's why for many moms, having a birth plan can be super empowering. And yet, every mother has to accept that ultimately, we can never control the outcome. As my guest, Dr. Tania Hall says, “the goal is always a healthy mama and a healthy baby-or babies. In some cases, high-risk pregnancy or c-section becomes part of the journey to that goal.” While it may be a personal goal to avoid a C-section or a high-risk pregnancy, understanding what to expect in those situations can make all the difference. In this episode, Dr. Tania Hall is addressing everything mamas need to know when facing a high-risk pregnancy or C-section. You'll also learn what questions you can ask and how to find a provider that will support your birth goals, regardless of what happens. There's no simple definition for what makes us a mom. Sometimes we pursue motherhood and other times motherhood finds us first. Sometimes we carry a child in our womb and sometimes another mother does. Yet our culture puts a lot of pressure on mothers everywhere to fit in tidy and rather limited boxes. This pressure leaves us questioning our value as women when we can't tick all the boxes. Today, I'm talking with writer and wellness advocate, Brittany Ross. In this Voices of Motherhood episode, we're exploring why our identity as a woman is beautifully complex. She's unpacking her story of becoming a mom before she was ready, desiring both biological and adoptive children, and learning to become an advocate for her own healing - and so much more. October is really special because it is Down Syndrome Awareness month! For this Voices of Motherhood episode, I sat down with my dear friend and mama to a daughter with Down syndrome, Caewyn Barnett. This conversation was such a gift to me because it was a precious opportunity to dive into the things Caewyn and her husband had to consider, process, and learn as they prepared to be parents to Ella. Discover how their journey - though not always smooth - has empowered them to embrace and enjoy every moment with their daughter. This is a special two-hour-long episode because there were so many treasures in the course of our conversation. If you know someone who has a child with Down syndrome or maybe you just received the news of a diagnosis, you'll absolutely be encouraged. Motherhood is one of the most fulfilling seasons of our lives, but the unexpected parts of the journey can be so lonely. That is - until someone has the courage to say, “Actually, I'm not okay.” In this Voices of Motherhood episode, I'm talking with my dear friend, Stepanie Staveland. We're diving deep into her experience with postpartum anxiety, fertility challenges, and miscarriage. Her story is tender and raw, but also full of hope. Stephanie was an incredible source of support when my husband and I miscarried, so I wanted to share her with you too. Her own journey and passion to serve other women walking through similar things have led her to open up her own private counseling practice with an emphasis on perinatal mental health. Trigger Warning: Please know that you may need to skip this episode to avoid a sensitive topic like miscarriage. We can't wait to connect with you again next week! I'm your host, Kelly Jo and in this episode, you're going to be hearing from me as I share more about my own journey with you specifically how I'm doing in this current pregnancy. (SPOILER ALERT - our son was born in September between the recording of this podcast and when it went live!) I was recently asked how my current pregnancy is different from our daughters in the wake of miscarriage and pregnancy loss. For those of you that are just joining us, I'm currently 9 months pregnant and due any day. Of course, each pregnancy is different and this one is especially so after experiencing a pregnancy loss in April of 2020. While this is a heavy topic - I promise it's also very hopeful.
