More Than a Song - Discovering the Truth of Scripture Hidden in Today's Popular Christian Music
Send us a textFamily is beautiful, frustrating, glorious, embarrassing, and diverse—even Christ's family line includes some characters and heroes. Christy Nockels' song " Amaryllis" inspired me to explore a few of the people in Christ's lineage. It seemed appropriate at this time of year when many of us have just made another year of Christmas memories with family and friends.Whether your family is on the glorious side, the tragic, or somewhere in between, we see God weave all kinds of people into the lineage of the Savior of the world…so surely there's hope for us!In this episode, I discuss:Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - our Bible Interaction Tool Exercises this week are: Follow cross-referencesConsider the historical context - the article I found on the "silent period" between Micah and MatthewEpisode GuideConsidering the context of your birthHow the Old Testament ends on a note of expectation - Micah 4:4-6Exploring the lineage of Christ - Matthew 1:17Learning more about "Grandpa" Perez in Genesis 38King Hezekiah and his good start - 2 Chronicles 29:1-3The influence Hezekiah had on his nation - 2 Chronicles 30:6-10A portion of Hezekiah's legacy - 2 Chronicles 31:20-21The "rest of the story" of Hezekiah's life - Isaiah 36-39Zerubbabel and his role in the rebuilding of the altar and the temple - Ezra 3-6Additional ResourcesLyrics - New Release TodayBehind the song "Amaryllis" by Christy Nockels - New Release Today ArticleThe Song Story of "Amaryllis" - YouTube VideoLearn more about my favorite Bible Study Software with a 30-day free trial and links to my all-time favorite Bible resources - Logos Bible Software Affiliate LinkThis Week's ChallengeFollow my lead and learn about Judah, Tamar, and Perez in Genesis 38. 2 Chronicles 29-31 tells much of the life of Hezekiah, but Isaiah 36-39 tells the "rest of the story." In this episode, Christy Nockels tells us how, after years in the Passion Band and as the band Watermark, she has learned to experience his presence in the ordinary moments just as she has on the largest of stages. Christy gives us ways to posture ourselves when God seems far away: confession and consecration. She also tells us of a time when a song felt particularly consecrated to Jesus, and how she - and many others - experienced a special moment together as a result. This song was Knees to the Earth, and since Christy just released a new version of the song, listen for it at the end of this episode. On today's Friday edition, we chat with Kristian Stanfill of Passion Music! From its start in 1995 Passion has been rooted in the truth of Isaiah 26:8 – “Yes Lord, walking in the way of Your truth we wait eagerly for You, for Your name and Your renown are the desire of our hearts” - existing to glorify God by uniting students in worship, prayer and justice for spiritual awakening in this generation. Passion believes that worship and justice go hand in hand, so students arrive ready to give. They give toward the END IT Movement, fighting against modern day slavery and this year Passion also called students to give toward Share Light – a campaign to see the Bible translated into the 6,000 known languages of the world during this generation's lifetime. Passion has encountered millions of students and 18-25 year-olds, young people whose lives have been transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. One of the most impactful and stirring aspects of the movement founded by Louie and Shelley Giglio has been the sea of voices uniting together to lift up the name of Jesus. Passion, currently helmed by Kristian Stanfill, Brett Younker and Melodie Malone, has ushered in the writing, recording and leading of some of the most recognizable and unforgettable worship anthems of this generation. Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman, Crowder, Christy Nockels and more have also lent their voices alongside Passion throughout the years. With more than 2 million units sold and a multitude of chart-topping singles such as “Glorious Day,” “Build My Life,” “God, You're So Good,” “How Great Is Our God,” “God Of This City,” “One Thing Remains,” “Even So Come,” and “10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord),” listeners across the world continue to be impacted by the music of Passion. It has been so beautiful to get to release some new, yet familiar—even tried and true songs—in this season! One of those is the song, “Breathe” paired with another beloved song, “Let it Be Jesus.” Today, I'll take you back to the seasons I was in when I first began to sing and lead both of these beautiful songs. They were very significant seasons in my life and in my spiritual formation, and to merge them together on this new album is such a joy. It's amazing how songs can truly become guideposts and guardrails in our journey, even a gateway to surrendering more of our heart to God's heart! We'll kind of walk through that gateway together, using these two songs, and talk about how God wants these proclamations we sing to become realities in our hearts and lives. “God, I breathe Your Name above everything,” is more than just a beautiful lyric! It's a posture of resolve and rest, and a deep trust that everything we need is found in Jesus. I'll talk to you soon! Today we will kick off a spring series in celebration of NEW (but familiar!) music—my EP “You Revive Me”, releases THIS WEEK wherever you listen to music! I've named today's episode “Up ‘Till Now”, because this album (that will continue to unfold throughout the spring) feels like an Ebenezer moment, to stop and say, “Up ‘till now, the Lord has been our help!” He has been so faithful, so kind and true, even through some of the hardest seasons in life. Also, as promised, today I will share with you what I wrote and read at my precious Mama's celebration of life! I hope that it will help remind you of your own legacy that you are leaving, or perhaps even help define it! I look forward to walking with you this spring. I'll talk to you soon!Pre-Save 'You Revive Me'Listen to 'This is the Hour'Follow Christy on Socials: WebsiteFacebook Twitter Instagram TikTok

This week we're exploring the miraculous gift and conduit of music, and the ways in which God moves through music to reach and help his people. Thanks for sharing, subscribing, rating, and reviewing, as this helps our community to grow. Thanks as always to my friend, Peter Vaughan-Vail, for providing the beautiful harp music you hear in this and every episode. Here are some resources to help you dig into this week's topic on your own: 1. Raised Catholic Recommends music playlist on Spotify - faith music from lots of genres/moods 2. Green Noise playlist on Spotify 3. Song: Front Porch, by Vontmer - check out all of his music, lots in that green frequency range, but this one is magic for little ones. 4. Video clip - JAWS - With and Without Music featuring Richard Dreyfuss and John Williams 5. Song: Pitter Patter Goes the Rain, by Christy Nockels. I've taught this song hundreds of times and never had a teacher or parent NOT say that there is magic in this song. Nockels herself says that she recorded a track of herself reading scripture or encouraging words in each of the songs on this album that you can't audibly hear but you can feel. Listen for yourself. 6. Journal question: when has music elicited a response in me that I did not expect? What kind of music was it? Where was I? How do I explain that reaction? 7. A primer on green, white, brown, and pink music/sound from Soundly 8. A few examples of music that unexpectedly ministered to me: Simple Gifts from Appalachian Spring, Aaron Copland, John Williams, Boston Pops Orchestra Beethoven's 5th Symphony, Second Movement, Andante (When I first heard this, I thought it sounded like what we'll hear in Heaven. I still do.) Rainbow, by Kacey Musgraves Four, by Sleeping At Last (lots of 'hidden tracks' in his music as well - hear him tell the story of this one in this podcast episode - how it was made)
Join Stasi in a heartfelt conversation with singer-songwriter Christy Nockels. Christy shares her journey to discover God's role in her creativity while realizing that our gifts can sometimes hinder our true desires. Christy began writing music and singing in the church at a young age, as the daughter of a pastor in Oklahoma. She met musician, Nathan Nockels, in 1993 at the Christian Artist Seminar in Estes Park, Colorado and the two married in 1995.The couple would form the Christian music duo, Watermark, touring nationwide and recording five acclaimed albums, including seven number one radio singles from 1998 to 2005, before laying down their Watermark journey for the sake of their family. Christy and Nathan were also among those invited by Louie and Shelley Giglio to be a part of the very first Passion Conference in Austin, TX, in 1997, which flourished into a fruitful twenty years of the couple songwriting and leading for the PassionMovement. Christy's voice and heart can be heard on songs like, “Waiting Here For You,” as well as her songwriting featured on church anthems like, “Lord, I Need You,” and “Healing is in Your Hands.”Christy now records for Keeper's Branch Records, the couple's independent record label, where they've enjoyed releasing fan-favorites like Be Held; Lullabies for the Beloved. Christy also launched a podcast in 2016 called, “The Glorious in the Mundane,” which is intentionally focused on helping women in any season of life, find the wonder and awe of God in the moments of the here and now.Christy and Nathan live in Franklin, TN where they love to gather around the farm table and even make music with their three children, Noah, Elliana and Annie Rose. They also love to spend time making their home, affectionally called Keeper's Branch, a place of rest for all who gather there.Book: The Life You Long For: Learning to Live from a Heart of Rest https://wahe.art/4aVBEjLAlbums Mentioned:Be Held : Lullabies For The Beloved InstrumentalThis is the HourSongs Mentioned:Waiting Here For YouLord I Need YouBeholdAs For Me (Psalm 2)Be Thou My Vision: Used with permission by Christy Nockels at the end of this podcast…..Don't Miss Out on the Next Episode – Subscribe for FreeSubscribe using your favorite podcast app:Spotify Podcasts – https://spoti.fi/42SsOipApple Podcasts – https://apple.co/42E0oZ1 Google Podcasts – http://wahe.art/3M81kxLAmazon Music & Audible – https://amzn.to/3M9u6hJ
If you or someone you know has experienced loss this season, you'll want to listen and pass this one along. There will be more to come with sharing some beautiful truths that I've learned and received from my sweet Mama's legacy. But for now, this is me letting you in on some of the last days and hours of her precious life here on earth. When we released the beloved hymn, Be Thou My Vision, on November 10th, I could never have imagined that my mother would go Home to Jesus just eleven days later. This song would become a prophetic anthem for me to hold onto and sing over this season. Whatever you are walking through this season, I pray that this episode (and this song) meets you in the most powerful way!Listen to 'Be Thou My Vision'Watch 'Be Thou My Vision'Listen to 'This is the Hour'Watch 'This is the Hour'Follow Christy on Socials: WebsiteFacebook Twitter Instagram TikTok

Today we'll finish up our week on living poor in spirit by exploring how spiritual freedom is tied to spiritual poverty. May you be stirred up today to live free as you hold tightly to the truths of God's kingdom. Abundant life is available to us now as we seek to live low and abide in Jesus. Our Scripture for today comes from 1 Peter 2:16. Today's worship is Freedom Song by Christy Nockels. – We are so excited to announce our very first First15 Kid's Devotional book, My Time With God. Get your copy of First15's first ever devotional book for kids today! My Time with God is a 20 day devotional written for young readers, ages 6-12, to help encourage and equip them to establish a lifetime of learning and walking with God through daily scripture reading and reflection. Each day of this 20 day devotional includes scriptures, activities, and prayers to help growing believers learn how to connect more deeply with God and about how spending time with God helps us live the life he's called us to. This resource is foundational, answering questions such as, What is a devotional? What is prayer? Why spend time with God? What does it mean to enjoy God's presence? “When we choose to love God and let ourselves experience his love, he also teaches us how to love others. Living for love means living like Jesus did. He was always thinking of others.” Request your copy of First15's new kids devotional, My Time With God, today by clicking here, and help your kids explore spending time with God each and every day!
On this week's podcast, we have lots to say about the Barbie movie, sending freshmen to college (including the questions we should and shouldn't ask them), spritual disciplines and routines, and our new favorite bible study. You can say "yes" to the Lord before you know what you are doing. Transitions are hard. Be kind to yourself! Be honest with others about what you are feeling and how you are doing. Instead of asking your college freshman "how are you?" ask "what do you need from me right now?" When you struggle with complacency, ask the Lord to increase your "want to." Okay, so this one made me weepy! Today we'll be in Psalm 118 which is a part of the Hallel—a collection of six Psalms (113-118) that have been sung and recited on joyous occasions and festivals all throughout Israel's history. We'll remember together that Jesus would have sung these very Psalms as a little boy, as well as his disciples, and Psalm 118 was sung by Jesus and his disciples together just before they made their way to the Mount of Olives. It's this beautiful picture of the power of worship when it's rooted and grounded in timeless Scripture, but then experienced in the very presence of Jesus! May we be a part of the true worshipers who will worship in Spirit and in Truth, singing about God, TO God! Letting a new song arise in us, from our hearts to His. Today I'm going to tell you about some home renovations that Nate and I have embarked on this summer, just to let you in on a little bit of our world and the DIY adventures that we find ourselves swimming in! With all that going on, the Psalms have kept a steady STIRRING in me and I pray the Lord has used them in the same way for you! Today we will be in Psalm 66 together where we will explore the beautiful declaration of, “As for me, I will tell what He has done for my soul.” We'll talk about leaning in with intentionality to tell God what He has done, as well as others! Yes, we'll be reminded of the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who we experience Truth with. In celebration of my husband Nathan's brand new album “Everywhere the River Goes” (available anywhere you listen to music!) we're going to talk about this River and the beauty of staying within the River's reach all the days of our lives! In fact, we'll use the song titles to give us a grid for what this River's work looks like in us and through us. There's mention of this River in Psalm 46, today's Psalm, as well as in Ezekiel 47. We'll look at aspects of both of these beautiful passages that remind us of the teeming life that only God can give us and how important it is to stay near Him to flourish! Last week we talked about a holy resolve, when we have a shift in perspective upon remembering what is TRUE about God, about ourselves and the world around us. This week we're going to sit in a bit of a holy tension together in Psalm 88, which is a passage that's not easy to get comfy in! But I am so excited to tell you that we have a VERY special guest joining us today! Adrienne Camp is going to lead us in coming around our Psalm for this week and I know you're going to LOVE hearing from her! I got word that she has just released a beautiful bible study called As For Me: Life Through the Lens of the Psalms (available now everywhere you buy books!) and you know I had to have her join us! I'm SO THRILLED that the SUMMER IN THE PSALMS series is back! I have needed this in my own life!! The lazy days of summer can be wonderful, but I find that it's easy to drift from my rhythm of staying grounded in truth if I'm not careful. I hope this series meets you right on time in the same way! Today we'll look at Psalm 73 together. It's about as honest as it gets, I love it! We can glean so much from it as we witness the Psalmist sing of his struggle but most importantly, we get to see where he goes to find answers. The Psalmist is looking around him and things just don't make sense. He has been careful to keep his life pure, but his only reward seems to be pain and turmoil. Yet, he looks around and sees people who don't care a thing about God or His ways and they seem to have it all together! He assures us that he was tempted to say out loud what was REALLY in his head and his heart concerning his bitterness but—thankfully for you and me—he chooses a different path, a better resolve. One that you and I can see for ourselves today as we navigate a perplexing hour! Christy Nockels is one of my favorite singers ever. Period. I fell in love with her voice from her days with Watermark, the popular duo with her husband Nathan. It was in the late 90's/early 2000's and I was just beginning to really get into Christian music. Christy had this elegant and humble way of inviting me into a sacred space. She never over-sang. She just seemed to know what to do with every song she sang. To connect you to God seemed to be her agenda and for me, it just clicked. That gentle, honest, gorgeous voice has been singing over my life for decades. Christy has recorded many solo albums, been a founding member of Passion City Church, and sang with so many artists- you know her voice. You just might know her name. How did she do that? I am convinced it's that unique ability she has to lead people in worship and almost disappear from the spotlight herself. There aren't many like her... Her latest project, “This is the Hour”, is the most beautiful worship album I've heard in a long time and is one of my all-time favorite albums. For real. I can't believe I get the honor of talking to Christy... and I get to share this conversation with you! I will try not to fan-girl too much because clearly, Christy is not about that.
Today you are going to get to hear some REALLY fun behind-the-scenes-stories from my new album “This is the Hour,” particularly from the adventure that was the photo shoot for this album! Even the little trick behind getting my hair to look “ablaze” in the wind for the cover of the song Valor! I had so much fun remembering the details of such a wonderful day, can't wait to tell you all about it! We'll also dive into the beautiful and sacred truth of Christ's life IN us! His life in us makes us a new creation and it also intrinsically ties us to the work that He is still doing on the earth and for eternity! I recently attended the IF: Gathering and had the privilege of worshiping through music with the amazing Christy Nockels. I've always been a huge fan of her music, but in recent days I'm an even bigger fan of her heart for the Lord. Today is super fun because we get a glimpse into the creative process behind her latest album, This is the Hour. She talks about coming to a place of complete exhaustion and how the Lord spoke rest into her life. We even have a super honest discussion about yelling at God when it feels as if life has become too much. New Episode Today!! Today we'll come around these intriguing questions: What if His presence is really His plan for us? And, what if His will for our lives is simply to walk with Him and treasure His “withness” with us more than anything? The longer I live, the more I'm convinced that the mundane really is the platform that God uses to refine us and grow us…to even shape our lives for longevity! Our part in it is learning to be aware of His presence and being willing to consistently meet with Him in the rhythm of our ordinary days. I know for me, it's easy to allow the thing I'm building FOR Him to blind me from truly just seeing Him. I'm also going to share a song with you today called “Evermore” that comes around this beautiful theme of His presence being what He values most on our behalf! It's still the question Tsh and Seth get more than just about any other... They each began answering this question in earlier chats, but it involves an answer that may take a lifetime to share... In this episode, Tsh shares more of her journey to the Catholic Church, why it wasn't just switching a “denomination,” and why the telos of the idea of a global church led her to recognize that Jesus established it in a particular way for a particular purpose. All Christians were Catholic for most of Church history, and this communion of saints is for all of us. …It's a fitting story to continue telling during Holy Week. * Seth: Newsletter | Website* Tsh: Newsletter | Website* Pick up a round of drinks* Our recommended reads* Come to Ireland with Tsh!* Why is Tsh Catholic? Three-time GMA Dove Award-winning worship leader, singer-songwriter, author and podcaster Christy Nockels releases her first full-length studio album in over five years, This Is The Hour. I remember listening to Christy Nockels and her husband Nathan when they were Watermark when I was in college and how much their music meant to me. I was so fortunate to be able to speak to Christy about her new album, why she wrote it, and the events that she personally had to go through before she could release it to the public. We talk about finding God's presence, and how that is everything. What it's like to walk away from fame and what she learned in the process. How does God meet us in painful places. How to find the glorious in the small moments. As a worship leader for over 25 years, Christy's heart is to simply lead others to connect and communicate with the living God. Her new album carries a storyline that God has already used in a deep and personal way in her and her producer-husband Nathan's lives. They have experienced these songs spiritually and even emotionally, and they have already been a healing balm to their own hearts.
