GunMaster is a December 1994 arcade exclusive game developed by Metro Corporation. It's a single or two-player boss rush action game that's part fighting game and part platformer; think a dash of Gunstar Heroes with a Neo Geo art style. The game uses a well-established combo of soundchips: the OKIM6295 for 4 channels of ADPCM and the YM2151 for 8 channels of FM audio. Metro Corporation was best known in the 90s for their Bust a Groove / Bust a Move series. More recently they've been a contract developer for Nintendo working on several Pokemon games and the Switch re-release of the Another Code / Trace Memory games. The soundtrack was composed by a trio under the pseudonyms Famishin, MAZ, and Shadow although our information about them is limited. What we do know is that Famishin continues to work in the game industry with their company Yuzusoft, with game releases as recently as 2022. MAZ was last seen as composer for Metro Corporation's PS1 game BursTrick: Wake Boarding!!, and Shadow is as elusive as Totsukurzwell (from our show on Dangerous Seed). As always, we hope you enjoy this boss music heavy soundtrack. Johnson and the Social Life of a Heroine” (2023) 134 Feminist Review 39–55 Abstract: This article analyses the legacy of Marsha P. Johnson as a heroine through the notion of labour, emphasising how heroine narratives are both a product of labour as well as a form of labour. After offering a short account of Marsha P. Johnson's role in the Stonewall riots and STAR, we explore the development of trans communities' ability to create, sustain and disseminate heroine narratives, emphasising Tourmaline's pivotal archival role in establishing Johnson's legacy. Then, we elucidate the role of heroine narratives in creating and sustaining a collective identity. We argue that community attachment to Marsha P. Johnson reclaims the place of trans communities in LGBTQ+ history but is often done in a manner that obscures the whiteness of mainstream trans advocacy. We suggest that the recent increase in interest towards the life-sustaining labour of STAR House reflects the evolution of trans collective identity in the post-visibility era. (Link to article)

The latest edition in our Gemstone saga is about one of the rarest and most diverse gemstones in the world - Tourmaline. A gem of many colours, Tourmalines have been misidentified as emeralds, rubies and diamonds down through the centuries. We discuss some of the most famous Tourmalines in history and, as always, discuss the ins and outs of identifying and valuing this gem! www.courtville.ie A Tape Deck podcast
This week Michael (Mike) Rose, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Tourmaline joins us as our guest. Tourmaline made some exciting announcements last week. First, they announced a partnership on a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station network across Western Canada to enable heavy-haul trucks to get off diesel. The company also announced that they plan to double the amount of gas they ship as LNG by 2026. Here are some of the questions that Jackie and Peter asked Mike: How have Western Canadian gas producers survived low gas prices? Why is Tourmaline investing in natural gas stations for heavy-haul trucking now, considering it still has GHG emissions? Has Tourmaline reduced its environmental footprint, including greenhouse gas emissions? How challenging is it to achieve the federal government's goal of reducing oil and gas emissions in the range of 40 to 45 percent by 2030? Are you exporting LNG to international markets today? Can Canada compete with the U.S. to supply gas to LNG export terminals on the U.S. Gulf Coast? How much WCSB gas could ultimately be shipped off Canada's West Coast? Other information referenced in this podcast: Alberta Government's aspirational plan to reach net zero by 2050 “Alberta emissions reduction and energy development plan.” Global News (April 18, 2023) “Tourmaline, Clean Energy Fuels to partner on natural gas fueling station network.” Bloomberg (April 18, 2023) “Tourmaline Aims to Double Portion of Gas Shipped as LNG by 2026.” Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/

"The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum is a fabulous place nestled in one of the most gorgeous little parts of Maine. We are a small town that focuses on a very particular part of Maine's history. Maine has had mining happen here since the early 1800s and we tell the story of that particular part of Maine's history and also a little bit about Maine's place in the universe as well. We are probably the only museum definitely in the state of Maine and probably the only one in the United States that tells a particular part of mining history. You know, like I said they've been mining here in Maine since the early 1820s and still continued to this day, mostly for gemstones at this point. But before really the 1960s they've been mining for industrial minerals. So we tell the story of that -- we preserve the pieces that have been mined here we preserve the stories of the people who did the mining and who created the jewelry. So it's kind of a local history museum, and certainly, something that our visitors don't expect when they walk in the door," said Maggie Kroenke. When folks think about gems and Maine the first thing that comes to mind is tourmaline. In October 1972, near the top of Plumbago Mountain in Newry, George Hartman, Dean McCrillis, Dale Sweatt, and contract miner Frank Perham unearthed North America's most magnificent single discovery of gem-quality tourmaline crystals–more than a ton in all. The discovery sent shockwaves through Maine and around the mineral world. Never had such a large quantity of world-class tourmaline gem rough been found in a single locality in North America. "2022 is the 50th anniversary of what's called the Big Find. It was one of the largest traveling finds in North America. And, you know, being the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum, I said, Well, we got to celebrate it somehow. And no, luckily, we were sort of coming out of the woods a little bit with COVID. And I said, Well, we gotta throw a party somehow. I started thinking about the gemstones that I have in my retail collection that I have available for customers and also artisans. Knowing that I had some absolutely amazing ones. I said, Well, let's figure out how we can get some artists involved. So I thought, well, you know, here in the museum store, we work with local artisans and I provide them with gemstones and they make beautiful jewelry that I have available in the store and I said well let's expand on that a little bit. So I brought that to what became the big find committee and they said, well, why don't we try to make this a nationwide thing. In July of last year, we sent out a call to artists and received over 30 submissions. We narrowed down the gemstones to 12, we would pick 12 artists from those who submitted and we would have a selection committee. I created a selection committee with people who were in the arts and jewelry community, both here in Maine, and nationwide. Then they had an hour-long Zoom, because of course, some were a little farther away and randomly chose the 12 gems for each artisan. They would have a year to create these pieces with complete and total artistic control," said Maggie. On Saturday, October 8th the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum will be hosting The Big Reveal event in Bethel. All 12 pieces will be showcased on models and the models will also be wearing pieces from local fashion designers, Catherine Fisher, Angelrox by Roxi Suger -- I interviewed Roxi on the podcast, and True Self Couture. There will be a VIP portion of the event where folks can meet one-on-one with the artisans who are a part of this project and see the pieces up close. To learn more about the event and get your tickets, click here.To see all of the artisans involved in this project, click here. Please follow the Maine Mineral & Gem Museum on Instagram and Facebook.

In Selfie Aesthetics: Seeing Trans Feminist Futures in Self-Representational Art (Duke University Press, 2022) Nicole Erin Morse examines how trans feminine artists use selfies and self-representational art to explore transition, selfhood, and relationality. Morse contends that rather than being understood as shallow emblems of a narcissistic age, selfies can produce politically meaningful encounters between creators and viewers. Through close readings of selfies and other digital artworks by trans feminist artists, Morse details a set of formal strategies they call selfie aesthetics: doubling, improvisation, seriality, and nonlinear temporality. Morse traces these strategies in the work of Zackary Drucker, Vivek Shraya, Tourmaline, Alok Vaid-Menon, Zinnia Jones, and Natalie Wynn, showing how these artists present improvisational identities and new modes of performative resistance by conveying the materialities of trans life. Morse shows how the interaction between selfie creators and viewers constructs collective modes of being and belonging in ways that envision trans feminist futures. By demonstrating the aesthetic depth and political potential of selfie creation, distribution, and reception, Morse deepens understandings of gender performativity and trans experience. Daniela Meneses Sala is Peruvian Academic and Journalist. She holds an MSc in Gender (Sexuality) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. This week on the show we are in the artist's studio visiting with the one and only Tourmaline. Tourmaline's work extends across various media and is a magical blend of a very research-oriented practice that brings history to life, and crafting visions of repose, luxury, relaxation, magic and joy – whether it is in the form of video installations, photography, or fashion. To say that her work is interdisciplinary would be an understatement – not only is Tourmaline an accomplished and award winning contemporary artist, whose work can be found at this year's Venice Bienalle and Art Basel, among countless other exhibitions, but she also works within the context of cinema – for instance the film “Happy Birthday, Marsha!” Which she co-directed, and focuses on the life of legendary trans artist and activist Masha P. Johnson – Tourmaline is also an accomplished writer, her latest being a book coming in 2024 from Penguin Random Houses' Tiny Reprations imprint, on the life of Marsha P Johnson. In our chat delve deeply into Tourmaline's process, influences, and also discuss her background as an organizer for abolition and trans and queer rights, and how this background factors into her work.
