Brittany Ross, a Los Angeles-based actor and stand up comedian opens up with refreshing authenticity about her journey into motherhood. She candidly shares her experiences of feeling like she lost her identity during her first pregnancy, as others only saw her as a mom-to-be and, after giving birth, felt defined solely by motherhood. Now pregnant again, Brittany reflects on navigating this journey differently, realizing she can embrace her role as a caring mom and her identity as a professional and individual woman. Join us as Brittany shares her insights and experiences in this honest and relatable conversation. IN THIS EPISODE: [2:46] Brittany shares who she is and how she brings her family into her comedic act, and she describes the unpreferred parent and gives examples [10:59] Brittany discusses how she felt about being a mom from her identity standpoint and how people treat you differently [18:44] Brittany is dealing with her second pregnancy differently, and how she is navigating this process [29:00] Brittany's advice is to remember everyone is different and can exercise whatever emotion they are feeling, and she reveals she had a miscarriage before her current pregnancy [35:08] What triggered Brittany to decide to have a second child was what she wanted [40:39] Brittany reminds listeners that everyone has ideas about what is right for you, but do what you think is right and what family means to Brittany KEY TAKEAWAYS: Children possess an innate ability to push their parents' buttons, and the bond between a mother and daughter is distinct. At times, it's uniquely positive, while at other times, it is a button-pushing scenario. Getting pregnant represents a significant life change, and it is ok to deal with it however you want to. Don't be pressured by outside influences of how you should feel or cope. As a mom, you love your child but don't want to lose your identity. Some of the feelings you have are based on hormones. Science doesn't always have to be in fancy labs with million dollar equipment and shiny beakers. Sometimes, science can be a bit more DIY. In this week's episode, our storytellers take a hands-on approach to scientific discovery. Part 1: Brittany Ross gets inspired when her high school physics teacher assigns a physics video project where she has to demonstrate a law of physics out in the real world. Part 2: Nothing will get in the way of Greg Pandelis's dreams to be a zoologist, except maybe a giant cliff. Brittany Ross grew up in Alaska, Scotland, South America, Texas, Chicago, and Hawaii. As a result, she is very normal...Brittany is an actress, writer, stand up, and producer. She performs stand up all over town, and is a well-known storyteller, having won The Moth several times. Aside from the Choco Krispies commercial that not only starred a 5-year-old Brittany, but probably changed ALL of your lives, Brittany is best known for playing Courtney in ABC's, THE MIDDLE. She can also be seen in Huge in France, Like Father, The Rookie, and more. Greg Pandelis is the curator of the Amphibian and Reptile Diversity Research Center of UT Arlington, where he manages the largest scientific collection of preserved reptiles and amphibians in Texas, while also conducting his own research. Despite thoroughly enjoying studying dead things, Greg's other passion lies in studying animals in the field; he has been on several field expeditions to Central America, South America, Europe, and Asia in pursuit of creepy crawly things of all sorts. In this episode, I chat with Brittany Ross, author of "Dangerous Hope," which she describes as a "love letter to her children and to women everywhere living in survival mode." Brittany says that constantly living in survival mode is not life - and that EVERY woman is worthy of healing and of living in alignment with her soul. If you are someone who has struggled to answer the question, "Who am I?" or has struggled to fit in with the status quo, this book is definitely a must-read. (From the book "Dangerous Hope"): Brittany Ross, business owner, Doula, holistic wellness advocate, certified yoga guide, and author. She is the CEO and founder of the anti-human trafficking nonprofit, Mission 108, which does advocacy work in the states and runs a safe home in India for girls rescued out of sex trafficking. There's no simple definition for what makes us a mom. Sometimes we pursue motherhood and other times motherhood finds us first. Sometimes we carry a child in our womb and sometimes another mother does. Yet our culture puts a lot of pressure on mothers everywhere to fit in tidy and rather limited boxes. This pressure leaves us questioning our value as women when we can't tick all the boxes. Today, I'm talking with writer and wellness advocate, Brittany Ross. In this Voices of Motherhood episode, we're exploring why our identity as a woman is beautifully complex. She's unpacking her story of becoming a mom before she was ready, desiring both biological and adoptive children, and learning to become an advocate for her own healing - and so much more.
