This wasn't just another Shabbat. This was the kind of Shabbat that reminds you history isn't something we read, it's something we walk into.At Chabad NDG in Montreal, a Persian-themed Shabbat table became something deeper: a meeting point between ancient Persia and modern Iran. Between the story of Haman and the voices of real Iranian activists fighting for freedom today. Between fear… and courage. Then came the moment no one planned.Walking to synagogue the next morning, before even hearing the news, the streets began to speak. Neighbors stopped, embraced, thanked. By the afternoon, the entire area around Chabad NDG filled with music, celebration, life. And suddenly, an ancient custom, making noise for Haman felt different.Because this isn't just about a villain from 2,500 years ago. From medieval children smashing stones with his name, to the teachings of the Rebbe, to a Midrash where noise literally drives away darkness—this episode explores a powerful idea:Sometimes holiness isn't quiet. Sometimes, the most spiritual thing you can do… is make noise. Not noise of chaos. Noise of clarity. Noise that says: Didan Natzach. We are still here.Key TakeawaysHaman is not just a character, he's a pattern. Every generation meets its version of Amalek. The question isn't if, it's how we respond.Noise can be holy. From ancient Jewish customs to Midrashic stories, making noise isn't childish, it's spiritual resistance. It's the soul refusing to be silent in the face of darkness.Joy is not denial, it's defiance. The celebrations outside weren't ignoring reality. They were transforming it. That's the deepest Purim energy: turning fear into song. The street became a synagogue. When neighbors hug you, when music fills the air, when gratitude replaces tension, you realize holiness doesn't only live inside walls.Children understand something we forget. They bang, they stomp, they erase Haman without overthinking it. There's a purity in that. A clarity adults sometimes lose.“Didan Natzach” is not just a phrase, it's a posture. It means: we don't wait for darkness to pass. We confront it. Together. Loudly. Joyfully.Available now:Paperback: https://www.amazon.com/Forgiveness-Experiment-What-Would-Your/dp/1069217638Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FR2QNJL6Audiobook: https://bit.ly/4tPFZhVSupport the showGot your own question for Rabbi Bernath? As a baby, Sarah didn't know that her diagnosis with asthma would be the first in a long list of diagnoses that would eventually grow to over twenty. Today she manages these conditions with the help of her husband Dan and cat Daisy. She juggles her self care with working as a fundraiser for a charity organization and screening films for the South by Southwest film festival. When not working, she finds joyful movement as a ballroom dancer. In this episode of the Major Pain podcast, Jesse talks with Sarah about her health journey, including several illnesses we have never discussed on the show before. The first is exercise induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO), an asthma like condition involving the vocal chords closing, which prevents patients from bringing in air properly during intense physical activity. The second is lichen sclerosus, a skin condition causing discolored and thin skin. Due to the sensitive and personal nature of this condition it can be extremely hard to discuss, making first-hand information scarce. Other topics of discussion include central auditory processing disorder, making it difficult to understand words spoken in a noisy or distracting environment, and managing neurodivergence on top of multiple physical conditions. Sarah is continuing to work at being joyfully disabled. She hopes to show others that with a little accommodation you can live a full life with chronic illness. She wants others to take the advice she has the most trouble taking herself, to be compassionate to yourself, and know that gratitude is not a competition. Christmas is such a beautiful time of year. We talk about peace and joy… But as moms, there's a lot of weight on us to make Christmas special, and sometimes it's hard to feel that peace. If you're the one doing most of the cooking, planning, wrapping, cleaning, and hosting, it can also feel like the season where everyone else rests, and you just work harder. In this episode I talk about what it looks like to serve joyfully at Christmas without burning out. If you're heading into Christmas knowing you'll be doing a lot of the work, I want you to hear this: You don't have to be the martyr. You don't have to carry it all. And you don't have to do it without joy. With simple plans, honest boundaries, and a heart anchored in who you're serving, this can be a Christmas where you serve freely from a place of love. Wishing you all Christmas blessings of peace and joy with your families. Thanks for listening! Our Sponsors: - A'del Natural Cosmetics - natural, U.S. made makeup, Christian and family-owned! Serve Joyfully By Rev. Ben Roberts September 14th, 2025 "Vision" Series
gotta say the single most important thing that gives me joy today is this puzzle of trying to make my life more fun and more exciting. That's what the whole Reciprocity Project actually is.For decades, research has never been as fun as people think it is. If you want to test this, go write a research paper on the weekend. You'll realize instantly: “oh my gosh, I hate this.”That's been my life for as long as I can remember—writing under extreme pressure. So I've been trying to solve one thing:How do you create a nearly non-rejectable research paper that is fun, interesting, your own flair—and actually exciting to do?And here's the real puzzle: absolutely nobody cares right now. Maybe a handful of people are paying attention, but most don't. And yet this puzzle gives me joy. Trying things. Building things. Playing around with ideas. Seeing what moves the needle. Even as I burn up time and resources.I'm ten years in and feel like I'm just starting. And I keep thinking about the reality so many researchers live in: chronic anxiety, stress, depression, tunnel vision. Most people never seek out anything that might make this life easier. And search engines bury anything that doesn't benefit them anyway. So the puzzle remains:How do we make research fun?How do we make it interesting? How do we democratize it—not just for elites? It's not just AI. It's about making our lives easier and more enjoyable. It's about treating research as something worth playing with, not something that destroys us.I know nobody's riding in on a white horse to fix any of this. So I'm building it myself. Slowly. Messily. Joyfully. One puzzle at a time.
SCRIPTURE: Psalm 100SHOW NOTES: For encouragement on your spiritual journey, we invite you to visit our ministry website, Discover God's Truth, where you can access additional resources to enrich your Walk with God. How should we praise the Lord? Why are we commanded to praise Him? The Psalms guide us in this vital part of worship. Specifically, Psalm 100 is a hymn of worship that urges us to thank and praise the Lord. "Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth.Serve the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful singing." Psalm 100:1-2 The psalmist calls for “all the earth” to come before the Great King. The nations must recognize that the Lord is God through His grace and blessings, which sustain His people's existence. Submission to His rule comes from a joyful and grateful response to His covenant promises. The "gladness" reflects the joy of living in harmony with the Creator, Redeemer, and King. Working Joyfully and Living Fully with Dr. Tiffany Slater Episode Summary In this episode, Phil is joined by Dr. Tiffany Slater, a seasoned Human Resources professional and the CEO of HR TaylorMade. Tiffany is passionate about helping small business owners create HR systems and policies that support the whole company, driven by her philosophy: "Work Joyfully, Live Fully". The conversation begins, as always, with the "innocuous question." Tiffany shares her love for cooking breakfast for her family—specifically pancakes, eggs, and a special "monkey bread" biscuit dish—which sets the stage for a discussion on family, connection, and joy. Tiffany then opens up about her personal journey from a miserable corporate existence to entrepreneurship. She shares a vulnerable story about how health scares and a spiritual calling pushed her to leave a job where she was unhappy, eventually leading her to build a business that allows her to live her life to the fullest . Phil and Tiffany dig deep into the practicalities of creating a joyful workplace. They discuss why HR policies shouldn't read like a "prison handbook," but instead should be clear, kind, and effective. They also explore the vital distinction between being "nice" (surface level) versus being "kind" (compassionate candor), and why frequent feedback is essential because, as Tiffany jokingly puts it, "people suck and it's our fault" when leaders fail to set clear expectations. Key Topics Discussed: The Innocuous Question: Why breakfast is the meal that brings Tiffany's family together The Pivot: How Tiffany moved from professional misery to joyful entrepreneurship through faith and resilience Overcoming Fear: The importance of cataloguing past successes to get through the scary moments of running a business. Joyful HR: Creating employee policies that are punitive only when necessary, but supportive and flexible by design Feedback Loops: Why annual reviews aren't enough and the need for quarterly touchpoints. Nice vs. Kind: Understanding why clear, direct feedback is kinder than polite ambiguity. The Three Big Questions: What impact do you want to make? How do you want to improve the lives of others? What do you want your story to be? Guest Bio Dr. Tiffany Slater is a human resources professional with over 20 years of experience. She is the CEO of HR TaylorMade, where she focuses on inspiring others to reach their highest level of achievement. Tiffany is known for having real conversations about success, failure, and the joy of a well-lived life. In this episode of The Self-Employed Life, I had the great pleasure of speaking with occupational health psychologist Dr. Christina Guthier, author of Joyfully Exhausted, about the often misunderstood concept of burnout. We discuss the idea that not all exhaustion is bad, explore the difference between joyful and harmful exhaustion, and examine the effort-reward imbalance that many self-employed people face. Christina emphasizes the importance of managing our energy and recovering from hidden efforts we may not even realize are draining us. Our conversation is a refreshing reminder that it's okay — and even healthy — to love your work, as long as you prioritize recovery and recognize your limits. Since childhood, Christina was fascinated to observe different states of exhaustion in adults after work (including unpaid care work). At Ruhr-University Bochum, she majored in organizational psychology, conducted corporate social responsibility (CSR) field-research as student assistant at the marketing department, and worked at eligo GmbH where she helped develop recruiting software. During her M.Sc. Psychology at Heidelberg University, she majored in Organizational Behaviour and Adaptive Cognition learning a lot about the complexity of performance ratings and leadership behavior as well as cognitive biases and decision heuristics. At the same time, Christina also completed her train-the-trainer certificate during her internship at the career services and development department at Mannheim Business School. Then she focused on occupational health psychology (particularly on burnout research) during her PhD at Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz. Christina's PhD thesis on "How to create healthier study and work environments" got awarded with the Alfred Teves dissertation award 2020. Additionally, her meta-analysis on the reciprocal relationship between job stressors and burnout (published in Psychological Bulletin) got awarded with the Schmidt-Hunter Meta-Analysis Award 2022 by the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (division of the American Psychological Association). Finally, as a self-employed scientist, she has started to translate (her) research insights into actionable advice by giving a TEDx talk, getting interviewed for German media outlets (e.g., Der Spiegel, deutschlandfunk nova), and writing articles for different journals and magazines (e.g., Leader to Leader, change magazine). Additionally, she has supported organizations as a speaker, trainer, and coach with shifting their mindsets regarding exhaustion and recovery.
