Rane and Jo welcome Claire Holloway back for her second appearance on the Flow Artist Podcast, where she shares her evolving journey as a yoga teacher and activist in Perth, Western Australia. Since her last visit, Claire has expanded her focus to include perinatal care, home birthing support, and community-based yoga programs. One of her notable achievements has been securing a local council grant to provide subsidised postpartum yoga, making her services more accessible to those who need them most. The conversation takes a powerful turn when Claire discusses her recent activism work, particularly her involvement in organising "Mothering During a Genocide," an event that amplified Palestinian and Indigenous voices. Her approach to activism is deeply intertwined with her role as a mother, viewing it as a nurturing, long-term commitment to social justice. As she puts it, "Start with a willingness to learn" - a philosophy that guides both her teaching and activism. The episode also delves into some sobering realities about birthing rights in Australia, with Claire sharing that "one in three people who birth in Australia are experiencing birth trauma." Her work in the home birth community and advocacy for birthing rights demonstrates her commitment to addressing these systemic issues. Throughout the conversation, Claire maintains a balance between acknowledging the gravity of social justice issues while offering hope and practical steps for creating change, emphasising that meaningful impact often starts with small, consistent actions rather than grand gestures. Haley came to me after experiencing a traumatic c-section with her first baby, nearly ten years ago — a birth where, in her own words, being the "good patient" caused her to stay quiet, go along with the system, and ultimately watch her dreams for birth slip away. But this time? She chose a different path. Through my program, Haley prepared for an HBAC — a homebirth after cesarean — and not only did she have a beautiful, redemptive homebirth, but she did it with the full understanding and wisdom of both sides of the coin — as a nurse and as a mama standing in her authority. We also dive into the complicated emotions that can come up when you work inside the medical system, but choose something different for yourself. Her story starts with her waters breaking early — what the hospital often labels as "premature rupture of membranes" — and how that moment could've easily led her down the same old cascade of interventions… but because she was prepared and supported, she stayed home, stayed confident, and brought her baby into the world in the way God designed. It's such a powerful conversation, especially if you're navigating fears after a c-section or feeling tension between your job in healthcare and your personal birth choices. Megan's first birth was a traumatic and violating hospital experience. Afterward, her baby developed a serious infection—something Megan suspects was caused by a novel procedure performed during the delivery. Though she deeply desired another child, she knew she had healing to do. A pivotal moment in that healing journey came when she attended a friend's home birth as a doula. Witnessing a peaceful birth and the respectful, culturally rooted care provided by midwives who serve the local Indigenous community was deeply moving. Not long after, Megan conceived her second baby and hired the same midwives to support her at home. She says this second birth helped rewrite the long-standing belief that something about her body was broken or flawed. It also, as birth so often does, revealed the depth of her own strength. In this episode, Cassandra chats with Author and Transformation Coach, Dr. Gertrude Lyons on how to rewrite the mother code — they dive into the cosmic codes we can unlock when we tap into our own ‘mother energy' and both mother ourselves internally as well as our loved ones, community and world externally. It's a powerful and intimate chat where Cassandra also shares never before heard insights on her own sacred home birth journey to becoming a mother as well. In Rewrite the Mother Code: From Sacrifice to Stardust - A Cosmic Approach to Motherhood, Dr. Gertrude Lyons challenges limiting beliefs and expands the concepts around what it is to be a mother.Throughout her book, Gertrude blurs the lines that pigeonhole women into limited roles that ultimately disempower them. Rather than operating within a narrow conception of what mothering is, she invites readers to open themselves up to what is possible and see the truth: That all women mother, and that mother energy is accessible to all of us—including men.Rewrite the Mother Code is a celebration of motherhood, bringing spirituality and community back into the experience and empowering women to be what they truly are—the ultimate creators of their lives. In this deeply moving and multifaceted episode, we sit down with Jen to explore her extraordinary journey through six births and five miscarriages, with a diagnosis of hyperfertility. Jen shares openly and honestly about her experiences, the medical complexities and the fierce resilience that led to her reclaiming her birth and deeply trusting her intuition, shaping her motherhood story. Jen leads us through her first two births, both vaginal births with doula support, and includes a run over of some of the complexities she experienced (retained placenta in her first birth and a snapped cord in her second). Jen then shares about her third birth where she experienced a shoulder dystocia - a complication that would weigh heavily on her decisions for her future pregnancy.Following her shoulder dystocia experience and another experience of miscarriage, Jen conceived her next baby, a pregnancy involving more complexity with multiple bleeds, a subchorionic hematoma and lots of discussions around risk of shoulder dystocia for this baby's birth. Jen shares of her anxiety throughout this pregnancy and the eventual decision to agree to a planned caesarean birth, but her journey didn't end there. With her next pregnancy, Jen embarked on a path of deep research and self-advocacy, culminating in a vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC) that she describes as incredibly healing. She walks us through her path leading back to her intuition, her advocacy for herself and her babies and how she came to the decisions she did as she navigated a high risk pregnancy that she felt was anything but. Finally, Jen shares her final birth of her sixth baby, a planned homebirth supported by a privately practising midwife who trusted her intuition and listened to her every step of the way. Jen describes her decision to transfer to hospital, how she was supported through this and her journey from feeling that she failed at homebirth to recognising that this was a successful homebirth, despite the transfer. Throughout it all, Jen's story is one of profound loss, strength, and reclamation. She speaks candidly about her experiences with miscarriage, the complexities of hyperfertility, the trauma and triumphs of birth, and how she ultimately found her voice and autonomy as a mother. Please join us on our journey to bringing you all kinds of VBAC stories from across the country from here on in by subscribing and following us on social media, @australianvbacstories on Instagram and Australian VBAC Stories on Facebook. Vanessa was born and raised in Brazil, a country with sky-high cesarean rates. Moving to the US inspired her to pursue her doula career, even before she became pregnant herself. Vanessa's own birth experiences were very different. Her first birth was a Cesarean after a birth center transfer. While it was medically necessary, it was very unexpected and traumatic. After a lot of processing and birth trauma therapy, she was ready to give birth again. Vanessa pursued a home birth for her second birth that was wonderfully straightforward and beautiful, surrounded by the people she loved most! She now lives just outside of Boston with her husband, two daughters and her mother. Send us a textIn this episode, we speak with Rebecca, a mother of two from Perth, Western Australia. Rebecca shares her powerful and deeply personal birth stories — from her first homebirth to her second birth, a freebirth.Rebecca begins by taking us through her pregnancies, both of which were marked by hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) lasting up to 20 weeks. She opens up about the physical and emotional challenges of navigating pregnancy while managing HG.For her first birth, Rebecca chose a homebirth with the support of a private midwife, opting not to go through the Community Midwifery Program (CMP). She went into labor at 40 weeks and 6 days, and during labour, performed a forward-leaning inversion to help reposition her baby, who wasn't quite in an ideal position. She chose a managed third stage for this birth. With her second pregnancy, Rebecca decided on a wild pregnancy — choosing not to engage in routine medical care or monitoring — and ultimately had a freebirth. She experienced several days of prodromal labour leading up to the birth and gave birth to her second baby at 41 weeks and 6 days — on Christmas Day.Support the show@homebirthstoriesaustralia Support the show by buying us a coffee! Joanna was deep in labor at home, attended by midwives, when she hit a breaking point and asked to transfer to the hospital. Nothing was medically wrong, but her labor was long, and she sensed the midwives were ready for it to be over. She gave birth shortly after arriving at the hospital and still got to experience the euphoric post-birth high she had hoped to feel at home. While her birth didn't unfold exactly as she had envisioned, Joanna reflects that she was still born into motherhood—as we all are—and that the initiations came in ways beyond the birth itself. This is the 70th birth story and it's shared by Haley mum of 2 living on Awabakal country. After a traumatic first caesarean with her first baby Nora, Haley eventually chose to hire a private midwife and plan her homebirth and vaginal birth after caesarean with baby Remy. Haley shares her pregnancy journey, her labour at home and ultimately the decision to transfer into hospital, which ended up resulting in a second caesarean. Haley's story really is incredible, whilst we laugh a lot, this story really shows how valuable private midwifery care can be as it really influenced how amazing her experience was, despite everything, finding herself for the second time having a surgery she didn't plan to have. In this episode we have another home birth story for you! This time we're talking with soon-to-be mom Jennifer Sanchez. Jennifer lives a vegan lifestyle and so we were super curious about how that has played into her pregnancy and home birth planning. Jennifer was a lot of fun to talk to and we're excited to have her on the Doing It At Home Podcast. Jennifer is currently 6 months pregnant and planning for her first child. Her passion is about “helping others to live healthier, more compassionate and eco-friendly lives through the power of making plant-powered choices.” This has also influenced her process of choosing home birth. After making the shift into self-improvement and personal development about 7 years ago, she's been more focused on being informed and doing research when it comes to life decisions. She watched the Business of Being Born (like a lot of our home birth moms...Ricki Lake if you're out there, we want to talk with you!), and thought, “this is what it's supposed to be like, this is motherhood.” She reached out online for home birth resources and came across the Well Rounded Momma, a source of support and information for her throughout the pregnancy. Jennifer is taking care of herself through meditation, taking time to bond with baby, prenatal yoga and releasing any fear-based thinking that's going to create unnecessary anxiety around birth. Wishing her and her partner Jose all the loving, peaceful vibes for welcoming their baby in the next few months. Stay tuned! Send us a textIn this episode, we speak with Tate—midwife, mother, and passionate advocate for physiological birth. Tate takes us through her path to becoming a midwife and her time working within the system as an MGP midwife, where she came face-to-face with the harsh reality: the system is not set up for true woman-centred care. Hospital policies, rigid protocols, and the fact that maternity care operates like a business often leave women and midwives disempowered. When Tate became pregnant with her first baby, she experienced hyperemesis gravidarum from just five weeks and required several ED visits for fluids. She shares how this intense time challenged her physically and emotionally, and how she leaned on supports like acupuncture and regular sessions with her psychologist to get through.Tate also opens up about experiencing bleeding in her first trimester, and how a diagnosis of a “short cervix” brought pressure from the hospital to start progesterone—something she declined, trusting in her baby and body instead. As a midwife herself, Tate reflects on how difficult it was to switch off her clinical brain and instead midwife herself through the process. Hi, On this very special episode of Where's Your Bump At, I'm delighted to be joined by the incredible Dr Golly. Dr Golly is a massive resource for education for all Mum's and Mum's to-be so I knew I had to get him on as soon as I started this project. Today, I'm asking Dr Golly all things private, public or homebirth. What are the differences? Is private worth it for the differences involved? What are some of the misconceptions behind these options? We unpack it all and I'm so grateful for Dr Golly's time and resources! All my love, Anna xxSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What happens when you choose to step away from mainstream expectations and reclaim your family's destiny? Mary Wainwright's journey from conventional life to intentional living offers a roadmap for those feeling trapped in industrial systems.Mary returns to share insights from her new book "Taking Back My Life," which chronicles her radical transformation across every aspect of family living. She takes us through the stark contrast between her traumatic hospital birth and her subsequent empowering home births, revealing how this experience catalyzed her entire lifestyle shift. Rather than presenting her choices as the "right way," Mary simply illuminates alternatives many families never consider. The conversation explores how modern society has systematically disconnected us from fundamental knowledge in just one or two generations. From growing food to understanding natural remedies, we've surrendered our self-sufficiency to systems that often prioritize profit over wellbeing. Mary shares practical steps anyone can take - starting a small garden, learning to make bone broth, or questioning medical interventions - that gradually build toward greater independence.Perhaps most powerful is Mary's reflection on community building. She describes creating a "tribe" where families barter skills, share resources, and collectively raise children. This interdependence makes sustainable living not just possible but deeply fulfilling, addressing the isolation that drove many women away from traditional roles decades ago.The conversation continually returns to fear as the controlling mechanism that keeps us compliant within industrial systems. By recognizing this pattern and making intentional choices about time, education, health, and community, Mary demonstrates how families can create lives aligned with their deepest values rather than external expectations. Her parting question resonates: "Are you living the life you want your children to replicate?"Ready to reclaim aspects of your family's life? In this episode we're talking with Charlotte Knee -- a brand spanking new mom, hailing all the way from Ireland, who welcomed her little bundle of joy in a home birth. In this episode we get to hear some perspective on home birth in Ireland! Charlotte was kind enough to chat with us while her 6-week old baby daughter Iza hung out in the background. We understand the life of fresh parenthood, and we know time is one of the most precious things at this state. So we consider it an honor that she spent some of it with us to share her awesome story. Charlotte's story is an example of how we continue to stay fascinated with birth in general, especially home birth. Because it's so different everywhere you go. Living in the states, you just tend to hear about the variations in laws and practices from state to state. But there's a whole big world out there! Charlotte has never been a big fan of hospitals. And get this - she was born at home! So continuing the tradition, she hired a private midwife and she and her husband Max planned for their home birth. Another cool part of Charlotte's life - she and her husband live in a shared house. So community is very important to her, and has played a big part in her journey of pregnancy and motherhood. We learned all kinds of new stuff from her - like using a tens unit and laughing gas during labor. We're totally inspired by Charlotte's style. And you need to check the show notes on the website because she and her family are pretty adorable! In today's episode we're answering a listener email. This one comes to us from Hannah who is looking for feedback on how she can amicably part ways with her OBGYN. Matthew and I LOVE our listener emails. Seriously, they energize us and inspire us to keep bringing you all awesome content. On the days when we're feeling under the weather (like Matthew is in this episode - notice the deep, raspy voice) and sleep deprived, we remember your questions and beautiful words of affirmation. They remind us of our mission - to create empowering conversation around home birth and to inspire other moms and families to choose the birth plan that resonates most with them after understanding their options. Enter a great listener email from Hannah. Hannah and her husband were going the hospital birth route, until the details and stipulations around the birthing plan didn't jive with them. On top of that, they're exploring how to have the conversation with their general doctor on moving forward with care for baby after birth. You see, their doctor doesn't support home birth. So how should they move forward? Should they continue to work with the doctor in hopes she'll be comfortable with treating baby, despite not being on board with home birth? Or do they even worry about it, given all the other things going on? Matthew and I read our response to them and share our feedback. We also give some clear action items for how Hannah and her husband can proceed with their plan from a space of love and understanding.
