I'm joined by my good friend Menno van Dyke, artistic director of Circusstad Festival in Rotterdam, for a conversation that starts with a recent circus trip to Stockholm and quickly turns into a masterclass on how audiences decide what to believe. We unpack a museum-style juggling show that uses archives, artifacts, and history to pull kids deeper into the craft and to give adults a new way to watch. From there we get honest about the downside of that same technique: skepticism. When the stakes look too high, some viewers assume it's all a story, which leads to a bigger question about showmanship, credibility, and why “real” physical skills sometimes need more proof than you'd expect. Then Menno takes us behind the scenes of contemporary circus festival programming and how Circusstad Festival Rotterdam helped build a stronger Dutch circus field by creating opportunities for graduates, inviting international companies, and producing new work like a gala night and a family freak show. We finish with the topic we can't stop nerding out about: the seven minute act. We talk structure, dramaturgy, and why short acts can be harder than full shows, plus how a personal circus video archive becomes a living library for anyone who wants to see what makes great acts endure.Subscribe, share this with a fellow circus lover, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show.LINKS:You can find information about the Juggling Tango act here. You can see a filmed version of it here. And this is a link to the Circusstad festival where Menno is the artistic director. This week on The 80s Movie Podcast, host Edward Havens launches a new semi-regular series, Produced and Abandoned, spotlighting films that were completed but largely discarded by their distributors. First up: the bizarre and nearly forgotten 1980 horror-comedy Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype, a very loose retelling of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," starring Oliver Reed in a dual role, and written and directed by Charles B. Griffith, the legendary screenwriter behind The Little Shop of Horrors. Produced by Cannon Films, the movie was rushed from concept to completion in just a few months, only to practically vanish from theaters. Edward explores the film's wild production history, from Griffith's original comedy concept and failed attempt to cast Dick Van Dyke to Oliver Reed's last-minute involvement and the movie's mysterious disappearance after only a handful of theatrical screenings. Plus: the connections to cult favorites like Condorman and The Apple, the strange international afterlife of the film on VHS, and why forgotten studio castoffs like Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype still deserve rediscovery decades later. ----more---- Transcript From Los Angeles, California, the entertainment capital of the world. It's The 80s Movie Podcast. I'm your host, Edward Havens. Thank you for listening today. Today, on this 137th episode of the show, I'm going to be starting a new semi-regular series called Produced and Abandoned, that brings movies that were made and barely exhibited back to the spotlight, if even only for a moment. One of the many advantages of having a non-linear podcast like this one is that I, as the host and the researcher and the writer, can zag unexpectedly at a moment's notice when I feel compelled to. And that happened to me this week. For a film historian like myself who focuses on movies from a specific discipline like, say, from the 1980s, the internet is a veritable cornucopia of people who share in some way many of your same passions, and you will find them doing a lot of the legwork unintentionally for you, or pointing you in a direction you didn't know you needed to go. In 2026, I. Edward Havens, still have an active Facebook account, which I mainly use to keep in touch with my friends and family who are scattered throughout the globe. I have curated my feed so that the non-relative crazy uncles and aunts of the world, with their tinfoil hats and indecipherable conspiracy theories about the strangest subjects, do not reach me. So it's not as toxic a space as many people know it to be. Some time last week, thanks to filmmaker Adam Rifkin, I learned about a private Facebook group called Old Movie Newspaper and Print Ads from Around the World. Nearly a century of digital newspaper clippings, mostly from the United States and mostly from the 1970s and 1980s. If, for example, if you wanted to know how many theaters the god awful 1988 Joe Piscopo horror/action/comedy film Dead Heat opened at in Detroit in May of 1988, I can tell you that now. It was twenty one theaters, by the way. Including four drive ins. And while perusing this private Facebook group of insane movie nerds, my kind of people, I saw an ad for an Oliver Reed movie I had never heard of before, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hype. Well, the episode that I had been working on, that I've been tinkering with for damn more than two years now, was moved to the backburner once again, for the time being. I had to learn more about this movie, and I had to learn about it right then and there, because that's who I am. At one thirty in the morning, with a toddler ready to wake up in five and a half hours. I was exhausted, but at least I was going to get the ball rolling. And what I discovered is just how amazingly quick this film went from concept to writing, to production to completion. In an interview published in the 1997 book "BackStory 3: Interviews with Screenwriters of the 1960s," the film's writer and director, Charles B. Griffith, described how the film came together. The title, originally "Doctor Feelgood and Mr. Hype," was one of several joke titles and ideas that Griffith had come up with for an expected meeting with Francis Ford Coppola about getting a movie made in the late 1970s. Griffith's own pitch for the film was that a hippie invents a new drug that turns its users into advertising executives. It was more meant to be an opening icebreaker joke than a real movie. After filming the movie Up From the Depths in the Philippines in 1978, Griffith would find himself talking to Cannon Films co-president Menahem Golan, who wanted Griffith to write a screenplay for The Happy Hooker Goes to Hollywood. While that film would get made, it would get made without Griffith ever signing on to it. But the two men would continue to talk regularly, as Griffith had been a roommate of Golan's when the Israeli filmmaker first arrived in America. And during one of those talks around New Year's Day of 1980s, Golan asked Griffith, who had just finished a two decade long, two dozen screenplay working relationship with Roger Corman, what he wanted to do next, Griffith would blurt out, for whatever reason, the title and pitch for "Doctor Feelgood and Mr. Hype," and Golan loved the idea. He was ready to put $750,000 into the production, provided Griffith had the film ready in four months... Ready to screen at the Cannes Film Market in four months, that is. Now, Griffith hadn't written a script for "Doctor Feelgood" at this point. All he had was that very basic one line concept, because it was never meant to be an actual film. Breaking down his timeline, Griffith figured he had three weeks to write and prep the film, a month to shoot, and two weeks to edit the footage. Of the $750,000 budget. Griffith would get twenty five thousand dollars to write and another twenty five thousand dollars to direct. As mentioned a moment ago, Griffith was a veteran of working with Roger Corman, so getting a shooting script ready in three weeks shouldn't have been a problem. Griffith, after all, had famously written the screenplay for The Little Shop of Horrors in just two days, and Griffith would completely change the direction of the story as well as the title. Cannon's own press release for the film would sum up the new story thusly... Horror spoof. Very loosely based on the R. L. Stevenson story, Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Lovable yet unattractive, chiropodist doctor Henry Heckle takes an overdose of a slimming drug, believing it will kill him. The drug transforms him and he becomes handsome and slim. He seduces several women, all of whom recoil from him when they see the ugliness in his eyes. The drug begins to wear off, and he takes a second dose, and he begins to terrorize the local community. Finally, he realizes that his love, Coral, loves him for himself, preferring the physically ugly but the spiritually beautiful. At first, Griffith tried to get the legendary Dick Van Dyke to play the titular characters, but Mr. Van Dyke was booked for all of 1980, appearing in the title role in a Broadway revival and U.S. tour of The Music Man. So he would turn to his second choice, who was, naturally as one would expect as a second choice to be for the wiry, immensely talented singer, dancer and actor Dick Van Dyke, the incredibly talented but somewhat pudgy, hirsute and not exactly known as a singer and dancer, Oliver Reed. By 1980, Mr. Reed had lost a lot of his star luster that made him an unusual heartthrob throughout the late 60s and early 70s. Not that he wasn't working on a regular basis. In fact, when Reed agreed to take the lead roles here, Griffith would have exactly one week to work with the legendary actor, who had a tiny hole in his schedule before he needed arrive in Paris to begin production on Disney's Condorman. That wouldn't be a problem for Griffith, who was used to dealing with massive production changes at the last minute. Reed's casting was announced to the press in late February, after Griffith had already cast Catherine Mary Stewart, who had recently finished her first film role in Menahem Golan's The Apple, as Coral, the beautiful young woman who falls for Heckyl, as well as Corman regulars Mel Welles and Dick Miller, and Jackie Coogan, the child star of Charlie Chaplin's The Kid Who found a renewed fame as Uncle Fester on the beloved 1960s television sitcom The Addams Family. The film would also be the first film for diminutive actor Tony Cox, best known as Marcus from the Bad Santa movies. Filming was scheduled to begin on March 3rd in Los Angeles. The schedule front loaded to get everything they needed from Reid before they lost him. But just before filming began, Griffith would lose his leading lady. I can't find out why Catherine Mary Stewart left the film before production began, but Griffith would find her replacement in Sonny Johnson. Johnson certainly had more film experience than Stewart, having appeared on an episode of Charlie's Angels, and featured in Bill Murray's Where the Buffalo Roam and in Animal House... although her scenes in the latter film would end up on the proverbial cutting room floor. Johnson would go on to co-star alongside Jennifer Beals in 1983's Flashdance, before sadly passing away in June of 1984 at the age of thirty of a ruptured aneurysm. She would join the cast the day before production began. Despite the legendary tales of Reed and his love of debauchery and excessive drinking, there are no contemporary reports of him being anything but an absolute gentleman on and off the set during his time with the production. The only issue Griffith had with the actor was that Reed had a fantastic take on heckle with a brilliant New York accent and sophistication. But, for Hyde, he would be slow and ponderous. You know, like the stereotypes of Oliver Reed. Busy with production, Griffith never noticed that in the Hollywood press, Cannon Films had, in promoting the 17 films they'd be selling at the Cannes Film Festival's market in early May, been telling the press that the budget for Dr. Heckyl was not $750,000, but $3,000,000. A not unusual mood for producers trying to get bigger sales from foreign markets. But sure enough, Griffith would have a 99 minute movie fully edited by Skip Schoolnik, whose next editing job would be on Halloween 2, and a musical score by Richard Band, ready for its first Cannes Film Market screening on May 11th. The film would screen a total of 8 times in 11 days, although there aren't any reports of how many countries cannon might have sold the film to during those two weeks. From all contemporary appearances, Cannon was preparing to open the film in the United States on October 10th, a date seemingly picked because Oliver Reed would be done with Condorman and not due on the set of his next film, Tobe Hooper's Venom, until the end of October. And as would be the norm in 1980, Cannon would prepare a sneak preview of the film to gauge audience reaction. On Friday, July 18th,1980, Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype would have a sneak preview at the Nickelodeon Theater in Boston, and according to the person who posted the image in the Movie Ads Facebook group, that would be the only paying public screening of the film, that it would be shelved forever from theatrical screening ,and banished to an otherwise ignoble premiere on VHS some years later. And while that is mostly true, it's not exactly one hundred percent true. I was able to find at least two actual theatrical release play dates, both opening on that same July 18th as the Boston sneak preview, at the Golden Mile Twin and the Imperial 6 in Toronto, two evening shows a day at the Golden Mile and five daily shows at the Imperial 6. The only contemporary hint as to how the film played in Toronto was that both screens dropped the film after a single week. Cannon would continue to promote and show the movie at various film festivals and markets around the globe, including at the Montreal Film Festival in late August 1980, where Menachem Golan's crazy disco sci-fi musical The Apple was screening in competition. And in an August 26th, 1980 article about Cannon Films in The Hollywood Reporter, it would be stated that Dr. Heckyl was one of eight movies Cannon was still planning to release theatrically before the end of the year. Except that never ended up happening. Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype does not appear to have ever played in any cinema outside of, maybe, one screening at a film festival in Barcelona on June 8th, 1981, but I can't find anything about this screening outside of a listing on the IMDb's Release info page. The film would start showing up on VHS tapes around the world, with titles like Experiência Fatal in Brazil, Boyfriend and Wild in Greece, Dr. Hekiru to Mr. Haipu in Japan. And my personal favorite, I'm Ugly, But I Want to Conquer in Hungary. In May of 2026, one can find the movie available for free with ads on the Tubi platform, as well as a pirated copy on the most popular English language video sharing platform. I might sit down one day and watch it, but as I said on the previous episode, I have a lot of plans for this podcast. Thank you for joining us. We'll talk again, hopefully, real soon. Remember to visit this episode's page on our website, https://the80smoviepodcast.com/, for extra materials about Dr. Heckyl and Mr. Hype. The 80s Movie Podcast has been researched, written, narrated, and edited by Edward Havens for Idiosyncratic Entertainment. Thank you again. Good night.

But it's also an issue of: as we divert funds towards nuclear power (new reactors, which are not here now, they're just aspirational ideas on paper, none of the designs have certifications or licenses yet) as we divert time and our money towards waiting for something that will perhaps take a decade or two (or never) to materialize, and as we squeeze out renewables in the process, what do we do? We continue to burn fossil fuels. So actually, choosing nuclear as an answer to climate makes the climate crisis worse.Linda GunterSean Simpson is an attorney specializing in civil jury trials, representing individuals who have been harmed by someone else's carelessness or intentional wrongdoing. So I decided that we had a very risky program [at the city of Beverly Hills]. It was for testing our commercial drivers for alcohol and drugs. And somehow they got a big percentage of them, almost a third of them, got left out of the program. And I can see, being backstage, what happens in city government where people leave and people come and how these kinds of things can occur. But when they do happen, what you've got to do is stop everything, blame the people that left, and then fix it right away. But this program—even though people knew that there was a big gap in it, they just didn't want to fix it. But I knew as City Safety Officer, I was responsible. So after months of delay, I said, “Listen, these drivers can't drive anymore. They can't do their safety functions without a clearance test from our drug and alcohol program.” And so that got their attention, and we quickly fixed the program, and I got a lot of thank yous. Callais to gut Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which preserved majority-minority congressional districts. In practice, this ruling gives conservative Southern states license to draw these districts out of existence. Jonathan Cervas, a political scientist at Carnegie-Mellon University who has served as a special master in multiple Voting Rights Act cases, is quoted in AP saying “The Voting Rights Act as a means to protect minority voters from vote dilution is essentially dead.” In the Washington Post, NAACP President Derrick Johnson called the decision “a devastating blow to what remains of the Voting Rights Act, and a license for corrupt politicians who want to rig the system by silencing entire communities,” and “a major setback for our nation and…the hard-won victories we've fought, bled, and died for.” In practice, this ruling is sure to set off a new round of redrawing congressional districts, likely resulting in a net gain of 12 seats – half of the Southern Section 2 districts – for the GOP. In Louisiana itself, CNN reports Governor Jeff Landry has halted House primaries, where “Early voting was scheduled to begin Saturday and overseas ballots had already gone out.” Moreover, “Democratic Rep. Cleo Fields, whose district is at the center of the Supreme Court's redistricting decision, said…Landry had told him he anticipated issuing an executive order to suspend the House election and call a new one.”* Speaking of Southern congressional districts, in Florida's 20th district, Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has “defiantly” filed to run again in the special election for her former district, per NOTUS. Cherfilus-McCormick resigned her seat in Congress last week just minutes before the House Ethics Committee was scheduled to “recommend punishment on an array of charges.” She had previously been found guilty of “25 ethics violations, including allegedly stealing $5 million dollars in federal disaster-aid funds used to bolster her 2021 campaign,” following an extensive investigation running for two years and including “issuing 58 subpoenas, interviewing 28 witnesses and reviewing over 33,000 documents.” Elijah Manley, the young progressive running for the seat, is quoted saying “Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned in disgrace moments before her colleagues were set to expel her from Congress…The last thing our community needs is a second round of chaos and instability. She should focus on her legal troubles.”* In more positive news from Congress, Rep. Greg Casar announced this week that the Congressional Progressive Caucus he chairs is issuing a new Affordability Agenda, bringing together a slew of bills sponsored by progressives – on topics ranging from housing to groceries to prescription drugs and more – into a unified package. In an introduction, the Caucus emphasizes that “Americans are facing a cost-of-living crisis and…At the same time, Democrats are searching for a vision that wins back the trust of working families and provides a mandate to deliver the big changes our country needs in 2026.” The question now is whether the Democratic Party will take up this banner and run with it or once again spurn their progressive base.* Meanwhile, the Trump administration is occupied with their continuing efforts to persecute comedians for anodyne jokes. The latest on this front is the Federal Communications Commission ordering the Walt Disney Company's ABC to seek early broadcast license renewals for the eight TV stations it owns, following a joke about Melania Trump on Jimmy Kimmel's late night show, NPR reports. The joke, a “mock speech for an alternative White House Correspondents' Dinner,” which went “Our first lady Melania is here. So beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow,” aired three days before the actual White House Correspondents' Dinner and the corresponding security threat. Kimmel has stressed that the joke was about the age difference between the President and First Lady “not, by any stretch of the definition, a call to assassination. And they know that.” FCC Commissioner Anna M. Gomez, sole Democrat still on the commission, issued a statement calling this “the most egregious action this FCC has taken in violation of the First Amendment to date…As part of its ongoing campaign of censorship and control, the White House called publicly for the silencing of a vocal critic, and this FCC has now answered that call.”* Another scandalous act of corruption from inside the federal government came to light this week with Gannon Ken Van Dyke, a special operations soldier stationed at Fort Bragg being charged with insider trading. Specifically, Van Dyke is charged with three counts of violating the Commodity Exchange Account, one count of wire fraud and one count of an unlawful money transaction for using classified government information to win over $400,000 via prediction betting site Polymarket vis-a-vis the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, per the Hill. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton, also heading up the prosecution of President Maduro, is quoted saying “Prediction markets are not a haven for using misappropriated confidential or classified information for personal gain.” For their part, Polymarket has announced tightened insider trading rules, but continues to insist that “When we identified a user trading on classified government information, we referred the matter to the DOJ & cooperated with their investigation,” and that Van Dyke's arrest is “proof the system works.”* In more news related to Latin America, a new poll shows leftist Senator and presidential candidate Iván Cepeda with a substantial lead, according to the City Paper Bogotá. In polls of the first round, Cepeda drew 44.3%, while his rivals, Abelardo de la Espriella and Paloma Valencia drew 21.5% and 19.8% respectively, an impressive showing for Valencia who has nearly doubled her support since the last poll was taken. In the second round, polling shows Cepeda besting both rivals, 54.6% to 42.6% against de la Espriella and a narrower 51.2% versus 46.6% against Valencia. A Cepeda victory would continue the leftward trend in Colombian politics begun with the election of Gustavo Petro in 2022, a remarkable turnaround for one of the most stalwart conservative countries in the region.* Elsewhere on the globe, a new poll shows Jeremy Corbyn – the British left icon, former Labour Party leader and founder of Your Party – in danger of losing his long-held seat in the riding of Islington North. Corbyn, who was first elected to the seat in 1983, was able to keep his seat as an independent MP even after his expulsion from the Labour Party following the hostile takeover of the party by the centrist Keir Starmer regime. Yet now, with Your Party coming apart at the seams, the Greens look poised to capture the seat. However, the Canary notes that this poll only asked voters about their partisan voting intentions, with no mention of individual candidates. This means even if voters in Islington North are more sympathetic to the Greens overall, they could still return Corbyn himself to Parliament. Nevertheless, this poll gives some indication of how successfully the Greens have outmaneuvered Your Party, even in what should be their most solid riding.* Another iconic British public figure – King Charles III – is in America this week for a royal visit in which he addressed a joint session of Congress, met with President Trump and enjoyed a White House dinner. On Wednesday, the King attended a wreath-laying ceremony at Ground Zero in New York City, along with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and, most strikingly, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. This unlikely pairing has clearly piqued the interest of the press, who asked Mayor Mamdani what he would talk about with the King if they were to have a private moment together. While the duo did not ultimately have a private meeting, Mamdani responded that he would “probably encourage [the King] to return the Kohinoor diamond,” which POLITICO identifies as “an enormous bauble set into a royal crown on display in the Tower of London,” noting that the diamond has “become a point of contention between England and India.”* In more local news, with the protracted California gubernatorial primary on the horizon at last, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees or IATSE, has thrown their weight behind progressive billionaire Tom Steyer, Variety reports. This piece notes Steyer's pledge to keep film and television production in Los Angeles along with his outspoken criticism of the merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. as well as his proposal to levy a tax on AI computations and use the proceeds to “fund training for displaced workers.” IATSE represents around 50,000 workers in California and 130,000 workers nationwide. Steyer has amassed considerable union support in his bid for perhaps the second most powerful political executive position in the country after the presidency, including the California Teachers Association, the California Federation of Teachers, and the California Nurses Association. Steyer's closest Democratic rival in the open primary, former Congressman, state Attorney General and HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra is racking up endorsements as well, including from Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California and powerful California politicianss such as Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas. With a close race between the top four leading Democrats and Republicans, the June 2nd primary is sure to conclude with a photo finish.* Finally, in Washington DC, the Democratic Mayoral primary continues to grow more acrimonious. This week, former Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, the candidate backed by corporate donors and the DC political establishment, criticized progressive Councilmember Janeese Lewis-George in a fundraising email for supposedly accepting “dark money from outside interest groups.” Which groups you may ask? Local unions, representing tens of thousands of DC workers, including local branches of the AFL-CIO, UFCW, transit workers, teachers, the building trades and more. In a stinging rebuke, the unions excoriated McDuffie for his “disturbing pattern of anti-union talking points and votes” including opposition to wage increases for DC restaurant and child-care workers – while simultaneously accepting donations from “MAGA developers…[and] utility and energy executives.” Moreover, Axios reports Safe & Affordable DC, a labor-aligned super PAC, is launching a half-million dollar ad blitz attacking McDuffie on his record of favoritism towards the utilities at a moment when bills are higher than ever. Tensions mounted even higher this week, when the D.C. Office of Campaign Finance opened an investigation to determine whether Lewis George's campaign is collaborating too closely with her union allies – an allegation she has dismissed as “baseless.” It is worth noting that DC progressives have had this accusation leveled at them in the past, only for it to indeed prove baseless. Expect this race to get more heated, and more expensive, the closer we get to the June 16th primary. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. This Day in Legal History: Nix v. HeddenOn April 24, 1893, the U.S. Supreme Court received submissions in Nix v. Hedden, the famous case asking whether a tomato should be treated as a fruit or a vegetable. The question sounds like the setup to a joke, but the legal issue was practical and financial: under the Tariff Act of 1883, imported vegetables were taxed, while fruits were not. That meant the classification of tomatoes had real consequences for importers bringing tomatoes into the United States. The plaintiffs argued that tomatoes are fruits in the botanical sense because they grow from the flower of the plant and contain seeds. The government argued that, whatever botanists might say, tomatoes were commonly bought, sold, cooked, and eaten as vegetables. The Supreme Court sided with the government. In its decision, the Court held that the tariff law should be read according to the ordinary meaning of the words “fruit” and “vegetable,” not their technical scientific meanings. Justice Horace Gray explained that tomatoes are usually served with dinner, not dessert, and are understood in common speech as vegetables. The case became a lasting example of how courts interpret statutes by looking at the way language is used in everyday life. It also shows that legal disputes often turn less on abstract definitions than on context, usage, and consequences. Nix v. Hedden remains memorable because it turns a simple grocery-store question into a lesson about statutory interpretation: the tomato may be a fruit to a botanist, but for tariff law in 1893, it was a vegetable.Federal prosecutors in Manhattan have charged U.S. Army Sgt. Gannon Ken Van Dyke with allegedly using classified information to profit from prediction-market bets tied to a military raid involving former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Van Dyke, who was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, allegedly helped plan and carry out the operation that resulted in Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, being brought to New York in January.Prosecutors say he began trading on Polymarket markets related to Maduro and Venezuela on Dec. 26, 2025, shortly before the Jan. 3, 2026 raid. According to the indictment, Van Dyke made more than $400,000 from those trades. The government alleges that, after making the money, he tried to hide the proceeds. He is charged with violating the Commodity Exchange Act, wire fraud, and making an unlawful monetary transaction. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission also brought a related enforcement action against him. Van Dyke was expected to appear first in federal court in North Carolina before later appearing in the Southern District of New York. Counsel information for him was not immediately available.Soldier Aware Of Maduro Raid Bet On Polymarket, Feds Say - Law360U.S. District Judge Esther Salas warned that proposed federal data privacy legislation could undermine state laws meant to protect judges and other public officials from having their personal information exposed online. Salas has pushed for stronger privacy protections since 2020, when a lawyer went to her New Jersey home and killed her 20-year-old son, Daniel Anderl. Congress later passed the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act, which shields federal judges' personal information online. Since then, more than a dozen states, including New Jersey, New York, and Maryland, have adopted similar protections for state judges, and some laws also cover law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and family members.Salas raised her concerns at an American Bar Association conference in Boston as House lawmakers consider federal privacy bills that would create national standards and preempt state laws. The bills, called the GUARD Financial Data Act and the SECURE Data Act, would require covered companies to limit collection of consumer data and give people rights to access or delete their information. But unlike New Jersey's Daniel's Law, the federal proposals would not let individuals sue companies for privacy violations. Salas said replacing stronger state protections with weaker federal rules could put judges across the country at greater risk. House committee representatives either declined to comment or did not respond.NJ judge whose son was killed warns against weakening state data privacy laws | ReutersSpirit Aviation told a New York bankruptcy judge that it is in advanced talks with the federal government over a major financing package that could help keep its second Chapter 11 case on track. The airline's lawyer, Marshall Huebner of Davis Polk, confirmed that negotiations are underway but did not verify reports about the possible size of the package or whether the government would receive an ownership stake. He said the proposed funding could do more than simply support the bankruptcy case and could position Spirit to compete strongly after restructuring. Spirit plans to seek court approval of the financing on April 30.The financing discussions come after the war involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran caused jet fuel prices to rise sharply, disrupting Spirit's existing reorganization plan. The airline had previously proposed canceling general unsecured claims and restructuring around support from secured noteholders, but it postponed seeking approval to send that plan to creditors. Judge Sean Lane approved a $533 million sale of about 20 aircraft to CSDS Aircraft and also granted Spirit a 90-day extension of its exclusive right to file a Chapter 11 plan. Spirit also disclosed that it missed an interest payment, triggering a default under its debtor-in-possession loan. The noteholder group funding much of that loan said it intends to enforce its rights and would oppose any relief that harms the lenders.Spirit In ‘Advanced' Talks With Gov't For Ch. 11 Financing - Law360 This is a public episode. David Lat—founder of Above the Law and author and host of Original Jurisdiction blog and podcast—explains what these stories reveal about a legal profession navigating ideological warfare, economic disruption, and the enduring craft of persuasion.Paul Clement delivered what SCOTUSblog called "a master class in oral argument" in Trump v. Cook. Lat dissects what made it a master class—by listening for the bench's emotional temperature, pivoting through backup arguments without undercutting his primary position, and admitting to Justice Alito that his framing was "heads I win, tails you lose."Key points:VanDyke's dissental as a direct call to the public? Lat describes the theory that VanDyke is practicing "postmodern jurisprudence," calling out what he views as liberal colleagues imposing policy preferences while cloaking them in legal doctrine. For California practitioners, ask yourself: are you appearing before a lightning-rod judge on your panel? Your case might become less about the merits and more about signaling beyond your case. The BigLaw executive orders worked—not through litigation, but through capitulation: Four firms fought Trump's security clearance revocations in court and won. But nine firms settled, committing to political non-discrimination and nearly $1 billion in administration-favored pro bono work.A Washington Post study confirms the chilling effect: large firms have dramatically curtailed challenges to Trump policies compared to the first administration. Smaller boutiques are picking up the slack, but they lack BigLaw's resources. Lat predicts the government will lose in the D.C. Circuit and SCOTUS won't take the case—but the damage is already done.Jack Smith's boutique launched with a Costco run for paper towels—and it's part of a broader trend: AI and co-counseling arrangements now enable small firms to handle discovery-heavy work previously requiring armies of associates. But success still depends on established reputations; fresh graduates need BigLaw's name recognition.Clement's oral argument techniques translate to any appellate court: Listen not just for questions but for the bench's emotional temperature—”the vibes.” Stay nimble with backup arguments framed as "We stand by X, but if you're not persuaded..." Keep it conversational and candid—breaking the fourth wall builds credibility.

Two explosive First Amendment cases from the Ninth Circuit show how culture-war flashpoints are reshaping speech doctrine and judicial decorum. In B.B. v. Capistrano Unified, the court held that elementary students have enforceable free speech rights under Tinker, vacating summary judgment after a first grader was disciplined for giving a classmate a pro-BLM drawing. Meanwhile, in Olympus Spa v. Armstrong, a divided panel upheld Washington's requirement that a women-only Korean spa admit pre-operative transgender women, prompting Judge VanDyke to open his dissent with "This is a case about swinging dicks," drawing a rebuke from 28 judges and igniting a firestorm over judicial rhetoric, religious liberty, and whether civility in opinions masks ideological outcomes.Key points:Olympus Spa + judicial rhetoric: VanDyke's vulgar disentail drew a “barroom talk” rebuke; defenders say it was an alarm about what “civil” language hides. • Rule-of-law theme: Majority applied rational basis; dissents argued Tandon strict scrutiny and denominational discrimination under Catholic Charities.B.B. v. Capistrano: Ninth Circuit confirms elementary students have Tinker rights, with age as a factor, not a cutoff. Why it goes back: Disputed facts over intent, impact, and discipline (including recess) made summary judgment improper.AI hallucination fallout: Campos/Munoz sanctions an attorney for fake citations; Westlaw's blue-link formatting can still mislead.Tune in to hear why these cases expose judicial composition, not doctrine, as the real variable, and why the fight over whether a judge can write "swinging dicks" may matter more than the legal tests themselves.

Today on Mea Culpa, I sit down with Matthew VanDyke, founder of Sons of Liberty International, security analyst, foreign fighter, and filmmaker, for a sobering conversation about escalating ICE operations in Minneapolis and what they reveal about the future of federal power in America. Drawing on his experience covering conflict zones around the world, VanDyke explains why the tactics being deployed resemble counterinsurgency more than traditional law enforcement. We examine how political theater, poor training, and the normalization of force are reshaping public perception, eroding civil liberties, and conditioning Americans to accept military-style policing at home. What happens when the life you've worked for—your city, your career, even your identity—dies overnight? In this tender, hope-filled conversation, Ginny sits down with Bible teacher and missionary kid Mikella Van Dyke, whose childhood stretched from refugee camps on the Thai–Myanmar border to hiking the Himalayas and dancing for the princess of Thailand. As a “third culture kid” who never quite fit in either Thailand or the U.S., Mikella shares how a lonely ninth-grade year, culture shock, and years of bouncing between countries left her with a deep identity crisis that eventually drove her into the pages of Scripture. Later, an unplanned pregnancy ended her dream of dancing professionally in New York City—and yet that loss became the doorway to Chasing Sacred, the ministry and new calling she never could have imagined. Learn more about Mikella's story and her new book Chasing Sacred. Together, Ginny and Mikella explore a simple, powerful way to read the Bible through the inductive Bible study method—asking good questions, honoring context, and letting God's Word move from head knowledge to heart change in the middle of real life with kids, frogs, dirt bikes, and dishes. They talk about daily “manna” moments in Scripture, how to spot teaching that's pulled out of context online, why courage sometimes means defying cultural norms, and how family missions trips to Little Lambs International in Guatemala have given their children a bigger vision for God's world. If you've ever felt like your dreams died with motherhood—or you're longing for an anchor in the chaos—this episode will invite you to see your own story, and your hours outside, as sacred ground.
