At Trader Joe's, our entire business begins with expecting the unexpected. When you spend your days searching for delicious new products and traveling the world in search of great values for customers, you never know what might happen. And while we knew from the beginning that Trader Joe's Unexpected Cheddar and Toscano cheeses were delicious values, we could never have predicted the success they'd find in our cheese cases. We recently visited the folks who work every day to bring us these spectacular, award-winning cheeses – including the Master Cheesemaker who's been on the scene from the beginning – and we walked away with even more appreciation for these fab fromage friends. Listen in, learn just enough to make you an amateur turophile, then head to your neighborhood Trader Joe's and pick up your favorite iteration of our Unexpected Cheddar and Toscano cheeses. Nominations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards delivered both expected and unexpected results. “The Pitt” led the way with 25 nominations, with “Hacks” one behind at 24. Shows like “Widow’s Bay” (19), “Pluribus” (18), “Beef” (16) and “DTF St. Louis” (13) were among other big winners. But popular shows like “The Bear” (8 nominations), often criticized for entering comedy categories, and “Stranger Things” (7 nominations in technical categories), were left out of most of the big categories. In this episode, co-hosts Bruce Miller and Terry Lipshetz discuss the nominations that were released earlier in the month. The awards ceremony will be held on Sept. 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The hosts also chat about some new programming, like the Netflix adaptation of “Little House on the Prairie” and the latest “Big Bang Theory” spinoff: “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.” And "House of the Dragon" is back, with its third season perhaps its best so far. About the show Streamed & Screened is a podcast about movies and TV hosted by Bruce Miller, a longtime entertainment reporter who is the retired editor of the Sioux City Journal in Iowa and Terry Lipshetz, managing editor of the National Newsroom for Lee Enterprises based in Madison, Wisconsin. Expect the Unexpected: What do you really need to worry about in business?

Real World Entrepreneurship

IntroductionIn this episode of Real World Entrepreneurship, Bhairav and Alan dig into a question every business owner wrestles with: what's actually worth worrying about? Between cash flow, co-founders, market reception and the things you genuinely cannot see coming, it's easy to spend energy in the wrong places. Alan and Bhairav talk through how they've each dealt with the unexpected over the years, including a deeply personal story from Alan about a cancer diagnosis that tested everything he believed about planning and control. What You Will Learn From ListeningWhy detailed planning gives a false sense of control, and why that's not actually a problemThe difference between risks worth preparing for and risks not worth the effortHow COVID exposed which businesses could adapt and which couldn'tWhy Eisenhower's two quotes on planning are more useful than any risk registerHow Bhairav's experience selling Atom challenged his own assumptions about strategyWhy founders should run a "hit by a bus" scenario on themselves, not just key staffAlan's personal account of being diagnosed with cancer two weeks after buying a companyWhat the "trough of disillusionment" is and why it hits most founders around six months inHow to tell the difference between problems worth carrying yourself and problems you can hand offA simple test for deciding whether something is actually worth worrying aboutMemorable Quotes"No matter how thorough your risk register, things will happen that you've not even thought of." — Alan Clarke"That is not very convenient." — Alan Clarke, on being told he'd be off work for six months following his cancer diagnosis"You're the one living it, no one else is doing it for you. You've built up all those years of experience. Trust yourself, back yourself." — Bhairav Patel"I worry about everything, and seldom did any of it ever happen. The things that I really, with hindsight, should have been worried about were the things I never saw coming." — Alan ClarkeSummaryThis episode opens with a simple premise. Founders spend a huge amount of energy worrying about business risk, but most of that worry is misdirected. Alan and Bhairav use Eisenhower's two famous quotes on planning, that no plan survives contact with the unexpected, and that planning itself is invaluable even when the plan isn't, as a frame for the whole conversation. They walk through real examples, including COVID and Bhairav's own experience selling Atom, to show that the businesses which fared best weren't the ones with the most detailed contingency plans. They were the ones able to adapt quickly when circumstances changed. The conversation takes a more personal turn around the halfway mark. Alan shares that seventeen years ago, two weeks after buying a company, he was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer and told he'd be off work for six months. It's a candid, unguarded section of the episode that grounds the whole discussion in something real. Bhairav uses it to raise a question most founders avoid: what happens to your business if you, personally, can't show up?From there the discussion moves into founder fatigue, the point around six months into a venture where the initial energy fades and the gap between expectation and reality starts to bite. Alan and Bhairav both offer practical ways of testing whether something is genuinely worth worrying about, including a method Alan picked up from a former boss: ask whether it will still matter in a year. This is worth listening to if you've ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of things that could go wrong in your business. Alan and Bhairav don't offer a formula. What they offer instead is a more honest, more useful way of thinking about risk, and a reminder that resilience matters more than any plan ever will.

God consistently chooses unlikely people - the zeros to be His heroes - because empty people can be filled and those with nothing to lose are willing to give everything away. This upside-down kingdom rewards strange behavior like hungering for righteousness, showing mercy to the undeserving, and making peace even when it leads to persecution. Hello to you listening in Stellenbosch, South Africa!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. It's a tradition to light the candles on a birthday cake and say, Make a wish! Blow out the candles!Where did this tradition begin? Maybe it's true or maybe it isn't, but as the story goes the ancient Greeks in the time of Zeus brought round-shaped cakes adorned with lit candles when they visited the temple of Artemis, the goddess of the hunt and the moon. The Romans called her Diana. As you can imagine, the lit candles made the round cakes glow like the moon. Others believed that the smoke from the candles carried the wishes and prayers heavenward where they would be granted - in time - although not always in the form they were expected.  Practical Tip: What Birthday Wishes of yours might have come true but not in the form they were expected? When it's your birthday light the candles, make a wish and expect the unexpected will again come true for you. Birthday wishes are like that! Guaranteed! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" With only a few days left until the new year, Rodney Evans and Sam Spurlin look ahead to how AI, jobs, and organizational life will shift in 2026—from real white-collar displacement and the rise of internal org-design teams to employees quietly choosing AI over difficult human teammates. -------------------------------- Ready to change your organization? Let's talk. Get our newsletter: Sign up here. Follow us: LinkedIn Instagram -------------------------------- Mentioned references: "US military met recruiting goals ahead of schedule" "AI workslop" "Steam game marketplace, AI labeling" 00:00 Intro + Check-In: What's a reflection you have on 2025? 03:44 Prediction 1: Hype cycle around AGI will break 05:03 Prediction 2: 2026 is tipping point for white collar AI job disruption 09:53 Prediction 3: Demand for internal OD teams increases 12:11 Prediction 4: People will start choosing AI over their coworkers for collab 15:04 Prediction 5: Divide between legacy orgs and AI-native micro orgs will grow 17:48 Prediction 6: New premium on human-crafted products and experience 21:57 Wrap up: Leave us a review, and see you in 2026 Sound engineering and design by Taylor Marvin of Coupe Studios.

Share a commentWhen life doesn't play by the rules, most of us feel disoriented and a little angry. Ecclesiastes 9 names that ache with startling honesty: the fastest runner loses, the strongest army falls, the most skilled employee gets passed over. We take you into Solomon's world to confront five jarring truths about outcomes, chance, and the limits of control—and then we show why choosing wisdom is still the most reliable way to live.We unpack the story of a poor, wise man who saves a small city from a great king and is quickly forgotten. It's a gut punch that exposes how often quiet, faithful wisdom gets ignored while loud leaders win the spotlight. Yet Solomon insists that a few words of wisdom are better than the shouting of fools. We explore what that means in homes, workplaces, churches, and public life, where volume and virality often masquerade as authority. From there, we trace the source of true wisdom back to God himself. Christ is the wisdom of God, and Scripture forms the instincts we need for right decisions, right reasons, right timing, and right motives. This isn't a promise of easy outcomes; it's a call to steady faithfulness when time and chance derail our plans. If you've felt overlooked, outpaced, or blindsided, this conversation will ground you in what's better than applause: a life aligned with God's Word, lived with clean hands and a quiet conscience. If this encourages you, subscribe, share it with a friend who needs steady footing today, and leave a review to help more people find the show.Support the showStephen's latest book, The Disciples Prayer, is available now. https://www.wisdomonline.org/store/view/the-disciples-prayer-hardback

Charles Spurgeon is quoted as saying that God does not let His children sin successfully. As Jonah flees from the command and commission of God, we see the pursuit of God's mercy upon Jonah through difficulty, trial, and hardship. As the storm rages and the sailors are about to die, the unexpected occurs, everything turns upside down, and God's mercy is seen even on a grander scale. In this study from Jonah 1:4–17, we examine Jonah's flee to Tarshish, the great storm he experienced, and the wondrous mercy God had upon both Jonah and on the pagan sailors. ------------» Take these studies deeper and be discipled in person by Nathan, Eric, Leslie, and the team at Ellerslie in one of our upcoming discipleship programs – learn more at: https://ellerslie.com/be-discipled/» Receive our free “Five Keys to Walking Through Difficulty” PDF by going to: https://ellerslie.com/subscribe/» For more information about Daily Thunder and the ministry of Ellerslie Mission Society, please visit: https://ellerslie.com/daily» If you have been blessed by Ellerslie, consider partnering with the ministry by donating at: https://ellerslie.com/donate/» Discover more Christ-centered teaching and resources from Nathan Johnson that will help you grow spiritually by checking out his website at: https://deeperchristian.com/

Episode 254 PREVIEW: Expect the Unexpected & Never Say Never (Full Episode on Patreon) | This is a preview of a subscriber-only episode from Aligned Access, my sacred space on Patreon where we go deeper than ever before. In this storytime-style episode, I share the wildly aligned (and slightly cinematic) moment a mystery man left a dozen roses and a handwritten note at my door… the same day I'd been vlogging about how men don't just show up at your front door. It was hilarious, heart-opening and more than anything: a powerful sign.We dive into manifestation, divine timing, why “birds before land” moments matter and how to trust the energetic breadcrumbs even when the full picture hasn't arrived. It's a reminder to stay open, surrender control and let yourself be surprised. Because anything is possible… and your desires might be closer than you think.
