Words About Books is a podcast where two wannabe writers read and discuss books. Read along with us, or just enjoy the show! New episodes every Sunday.
This week nobody asked for this. Ben didn't. Nate didn't. The fans didn't. But yet here we are because SOMEBODY didn't write a book that would take 2 parts despite being 400+ pages. This week Nate tackles something very near and dear to his heart: Mass Effect. Also Shamus Young, a writer who had tragically passed away just a few short years ago. Ben is also here. Sometimes. He's around here. Occasionally he has some good observations that are born out of Nate failing to properly get his point across or describe Shamus Young's writing concepts and then he has to go back and add in a lot of post-recording footgate to better explain himself. This episode started with about 91 minutes of audio and after extensive cuts and recordings it now only has... 101 minutes... well, crap.Check out Shamus Young's work at https://www.shamusyoung.com/ and consider supporting the author on amazon. Suck it Ben.Nate read: Stalin: Waiting for Hitler by Stephen KotkinThen Nate watched a bunch of videos: Battlefield (an oldie but a goodie. This one went off the rails immediately. Nate is obsessed with Rhys's length and Ben keeps thinking about different ways to use ash wood to kill the fey. It takes us about 30 minutes to get to the point where they actually talk about the story. I'll be honest, I wouldn't recommend this episode. This week we tackle a current topic... well from like 2 months ago when we put it up on the patreon to be voted on. I don't think anyone is talking about the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remake anymore so we're a little late to the party. That's just the kind of people WAB are. We show up at 3am after all your guests have already gone home bringing too much alcohol and snacks that you are absolutely going to be eating and drinking because we went through all this trouble, you jerk. Now turn on that TV becuase we want to drunkenly watch infomercials while we hit on your obviously tired and pissed off girlfriend. I'm feeling lucky. Today the boys discuss one of the worst things we've ever had the displeasure of reading. We didin't go in thinking we'd like it. We figured it would be something that just wasn't for us and we could understand (maybe) why others liked it even if it wasn't for us. What we got instead? Awful. Absoilutely positively awful. This is the story of an abused child learning that her abusive mom was a person too and learning to forgive her... no wait, sorry scratch that last part. She learns to apologize to her abusive mom. Her mom is the one who should be apologized to because her mom is luminous while we're a bunch of stupid idiots and her stupid ungrateful daughter needs to learn that her mom did less than the bare minimum necessary to raise those kids and like... some times things were good right? Right? Garbage.
