In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick and Anthony take on the grand finale of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Return of the King. With epic battles, emotional farewells, and enough endings to fill an entire movie on their own, this film delivers the conclusion to one of the most celebrated trilogies of all time. Anthony, ever the Lord of the Rings enthusiast, is excited to dive deep into what makes this film such a cinematic masterpiece, while Nick—always skeptical of long runtimes and excessive walking—grudgingly admits that there's a lot to admire in this final chapter. As they break down the film, Anthony passionately praises the Battle of Pelennor Fields, the charge of the Rohirrim, and Aragorn's journey to claiming his rightful throne. He argues that Return of the King is the emotional payoff that justifies the long journey of the trilogy. Meanwhile, Nick has plenty to say about the multiple endings, questioning whether the film actually needed to wrap up every storyline in such detail. He may not have the same deep love for Middle-earth, but even he has to admit that the sheer spectacle of this movie is undeniable. The discussion also touches on some of the film's most iconic moments—Sam's unwavering loyalty to Frodo, Gollum's final betrayal, and of course, the infamous “You bow to no one” scene. Nick and Anthony debate whether Frodo was the true hero of the story or if Sam deserved more credit for getting them to Mount Doom. They also take time to appreciate the film's groundbreaking visual effects, especially in the creation of Gollum and the massive battle sequences. By the end of the episode, the hosts weigh in on whether Return of the King is truly the most rewatchable of the trilogy or if it's best experienced as part of the full journey. Anthony is all in, declaring it a must-rewatch classic, while Nick—despite his usual gripes—acknowledges that there's something undeniably special about this film. Whether you're a die-hard Tolkien fan or just along for the ride, this episode delivers plenty of laughs, debate, and one last trip into Middle-earth. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167260/
Tolkien gyakran kap olyan kritikát, hogy A Gyűrűk Ura híján van női karaktereknek. Mások szerint viszont a művekben szereplő összes hölgy példaértékűen van megírva.
Dropping the Barrow-downs removes one of the most important callbacks in the final Battle of the Pelennor Fields before Minas Tirith.

A viewer commented that the case was rather the opposite with the Paths of the Dead and Aragorn's appearance in the Corsair ships, so in this video I explore what makes these two examples different. Are you prepared to wage the battle for hope? As fathers and leaders, we're not just fighting for our own souls. We're contending for the souls of our children, the future generation. We're on a quest to discover how to provide beams of hope amidst the swirling tempests of life. In this pursuit, we turn to Tolkien's The Return of the King, examining the character of Denethor, a symbol of despair and defeat. We also reflect on the importance of raising our children to be strong, courageous, and hopeful. In the midst of the raging battle at the Pelennor Fields, we take inspiration from King Theoden, another character from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Theoden's story speaks of despair transformed into courage, glory, and a brave death. His tale teaches us the lesson of resurrection hope, the ultimate white pill in the face of death. We also explore the resurgence of cultures that go down fighting and delve into why the youth of today are embracing post-millennialism as a way of maintaining hope in the future.Diving further, we scrutinize the role of media consumption in conservative culture and how it feeds into a narrative of decline. But we're not stopping there. We're charting out ways to combat this mindset, gleaning lessons from Theoden's example. We're striving to guide you in leading your families with bravery and optimism, armed with faith, joy, and an unshakeable belief in the promises of the Lord. We invite you to join us on this journey towards hope and resilience.Notes: This episode is sponsored by Salt and Strings butchery. Éomer forms a final shield-wall and thinks of songs that will never be sung; Alan and Shawn offer to gladly butcher, uh, sing those songs. Join us as the appearance of black sails thrills the forces of Sauron right up until it doesn't, on the last of our episodes on The Battle of the Pelennor Fields. We cry at the sudden joyous turn, discuss Rohirric aphorisms, and admire Tolkien's rolled ‘R's. We spend way too long on a sidebar about the Elendilmir and say goodbye to Shawn again. Finally, we decide to call the legal specialists at 1-800-OATHS4U to negotiate our way out of Middle-earth oaths.

The king is dead, long live the king! Meet was Théoden's ending; will meat be Alan and Shawn's ending? Join us as Éomer receives an unexpected promotion in our second episode on The Battle of the Pelennor Fields. We learn about Merry's blade, Éomer's fey mood, and Imrahil's shiny armor, while we speculate if Gandalf might've managed a modicum of mighty Maia medical magic. We cry in our bier, discuss elephant pedicures, and talk about dream-team Tolkien adaptations. Finally, Variag revenge is a dish best served cold in Pelennor Trek II: The Wrath of Khand.
The Witch-king arrives on the battlefield; Alan and Shawn also arrive, presumably with less stink. Join us as we finally arrive at the moment that we've been waiting for for more than seven years as we begin The Battle of the Pelennor Fields! Merry vomits from terror, the Witch-king mansplains the prophecy to Éowyn, and she stabs him in his invisible face. What do meat that comes in a drum, Manwë's birthday cake, and Wormtongue in a sequined teddy have in common? We don't know either. Thankfully, we're also joined once again by Dr. Bret Deveraux who helps us get a handle on the hostility's happenings.

Hello and welcome to the NotACast, the one true chapter-by-chapter podcast going through A Song of Ice and Fire one chapter a week! Emmett is resuming his Lord of the Rings episodes. Here's our episode on Book 5, Chapter 6, "The Battle of the Pelennor Fields," in which Theoden's heroic charge is brought up short by the Witch-King, only for the latter to be defeated by two overlooked heroes: Eowyn and Merry. Meanwhile, some guy named Aragorn, or Elessar (it's confusing), shows up to save the day. About time! As announced a few episodes back, Jeff is sadly not returning to the podcast. Manu is joining us as the new co-host, and we'll be returning to ASOIAF with Sansa's third chapter in A Storm of Swords, released for patrons starting 8/18 and for everyone on 8/22. This will be the last weekly Lord of the Rings episode, but they will return on a monthly basis for all $5+ patrons. Aragorn has revealed himself to Sauron in the palantír, the initial assault on Gondor has begun, Théoden leads Rohan into the fray hoping they are not too late, and Faramir has suffered a grievous injury. Today we move on into one of, if not, the most climactic sections of this novel and entire series with the events that occur from Chapter 6 through Chapter 10 in The Return of the King. Join us as we jump into the full battle on the Pelennor Fields of Gondor, see the fall of King Théoden, watch The Lord of the Nagûl meet his match, observe unsuspecting reinforcements come to the aid of one side, the healing of important individuals, plans for a last stand, and a final march to the Black Gate. With Chase & Josh taking you through one of the most action packed segments of the novel, highlighting key moments and dialogue, breaking down the logic behind certain decisions, and debating a couple topics that could have changed a few outcomes, you don't want to miss this. "We must walk open-eyed into that trap, with courage, but small hope for ourselves. For, my lords, it may well prove that we ourselves shall perish utterly in a black battle far from the living lands; so that even if Barad-dûr be thrown down, we shall not live to see a new age. But this, I deem, is our duty. And better so than to perish nonetheless – as we surely shall, if we sit here – and know as we die that no new age shall be."

In episode nine of in-depth Lord of the Rings character guide Not Another F**king Elf, we're saluting Eowyn, aka Dernhelm, hero of the Battle of Pelennor Fields. Every week in this podcast, Paul Ridd and Catherine Bray look at a character's place in Tolkien's mythos, their place in pop culture, literature and adaptations. We look at Peter Jackson's adaptations, Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings (1978), the 1979 Mind's Eye radio adaptation, Return of the King (1980) from Rankin-Bass, the 1981 BBC Radio adaptation, and the 1990 Rob Inglis and 2020 Andy Serkis audiobooks.

The year is 1971: we just went to the moon, Nixon is President (woops), Disney World just opened...and Led Zeppelin is singing about Tolkien. Join Cam and Maggie as they break down one of Zeppelin's most Middle-earthian songs. Ringwraiths, the Dark Lord, and magic runes abound - and Arthurian legend is thrown in for some spice. This kaleidoscope of folklore and magic imagery eerily reflects the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and encourages us to once again ponder the ways in which legendary moments pass into legend. Galadriel, Gandalf, and Éowyn make their way into the discussion too, along with a special group of Nine (and it's not the one you think). Plus, Maggie properly identifies a mandolin. Huzzah. Oh boy – what a finale. I don't think we've ever been this excited for an episode, even Maggie's recap feels like a spirited campfire reenactment of the chapter. The Witch King rises to previously unknown heights, eclipsing Smaug and Saruman and almost retaking the power of Tolkien's almighty fire imagery – but then Éowyn shows up and ruins his whole day. The power of light and gold (and Aragorn) show up, the heroes wrestle control of both fire imagery and water imagery, and Tolkien recedes into the realm of impressionistic metaphor to describe the terrific violence that ends this battle. Éomer also takes charge of a new “grey company,” Tolkien makes his strongest statement yet about history and songs, and we finally see the value of all the geopolitical alliances that our heroes have been building up. Most DMs come to a point in their campaigns where they want to run The Big Battle. We're not talking the players vs. a few Balors, but a real war: Storming the beaches of a fantasy Normandy, the Siege of Winterfell, the Battle of Pelennor Fields from Lord of the Rings. But when you go to set the battle up, you realize just how clunky mass combat is in D&D and most RPGs. The problem is, most RPGs are skirmish-level games, especially D&D. That means they run well with up to about 20 characters in a battle. Beyond that, things slow down and there aren't good ways to simulate the battle. So, you wind up having to homebrew or adapt some kind of mass combat ruleset, but these don't always work out, either. Most mass combat expansions for D&D, for example, are basically fantasy wargames, and your players may not be up for D&D night turning into Warhammer 1100 AD. Over the past year, I have been reading J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings to my two younger boys, now age 7 and 9. We were into the third volume––called “The Return of the King”—and had just concluded the chapter entitled “Houses of Healing.” This is after the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, from which came great suffering and destruction, but also great bravery and friendship. In the Houses of Healing, the wounded are being tended to, though some are so deeply wounded that their recovery is uncertain or even doubtful. But then Aragon is summoned to the Houses of Healing and is eventually revealed as the true king because he has the power to heal those who are wounded in body and spirit––wounds so deep that the normal courses of treatment could not heal. And my 9-year-old, Josiah, suddenly said, “That’s like Jesus who showed his kingship by healing people.” I want to talk about this kind of healing today on our show. Not explicitly Jesus’ healing touch, but profound meditation that Tolkien invites into in his Lord of Rings, where the health and wellbeing of the wounded is never only physical, never just bodily, but indeed psychological and especially spiritual. Tolkien’s meditation emerges, of course, from his Catholic imagination, and so though not explicitly about Jesus’ healing, it is nevertheless about Jesus’ healing in and through others. To talk about these kinds of sicknesses and this kind of healing, I am so happy to welcome back to our show Dr. Kristin Collier, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan, where she is also the director of the medical school’s Program on Health, Spirituality, and Religion.

It’s Return of the Podcast with LOTR: Return of the King! In this episode of Too Big to Film, we discuss the final installment of Lord of the Rings, directed by Peter Jackson. We ponder what happens to the Middle Earth political system after the Battle of Pelennor Fields, the orcs get some much desired (by us) character development, and Melanie runs away with the Witch King of Angmar. Listen here and remember why you love listening, liking and subscribing to us! Too Big to Film is produced by Melanie Cuccioli and Adam Sperry. Associate producer Kelsey Stephanides. With music by Neil Quillen.
In a chapter whose epic scope zooms in and out on various participants in this fierce battle, the Tolkien Heads are just trying to keep up. This includes working through some incredibly racist descriptions of the non-white allies of Mordor. The lectio divina section looks at—what else?—Éowyn’s show-stopping confrontation with the Witch-King, Lord of the […]
This episode is sponsored by Little Petal (use code SARTORIAL for free shipping!) and Jordandene. Have you ever dreamed of going to Hobbiton? Kim Rogers from Head Over Feels went there and back again and is here to tell us all about it. If you didn't know, Hobbiton is a real life place you can visit in the beautiful country of New Zealand. Kim traveled with Red Carpet Tours, which sounds like a truly amazing experience. Not only is this tour group endorsed by Peter Jackson, they've also been leading tours for such a long time they're the best in the business. From giving personal recommendations to traveling with all kinds of unique photo props to having special deals with private property, Red Carpet Tours get a 10/10 recommendation from Kim. Kim walks us through her entire LOTR-inspired trip, including: Trollshaw Forest One does not simply bus into Mordor Wellington, Gollums fishing pool, and Erebor Weta Workshop and Weta Cave Meeting LOTR/Hobbit calligrapher Daniel Reeve The river from the dwarves Elven escape Meeting the makers of the “One Ring” Edoras Pelennor Fields In addition to all of the incredible LOTR experiences, Kim also got to go on some personal adventures like bungee jumping, zipline, and getting a tattoo! Kim has the very first Jordandene tattoo, so we're always a little obsessed with her ink choices. If you ever have a chance to take this trip of a lifetime, it's an incredible magical experience. You can head to Facebook (@kimmierocks) to check out some of Kim's photos from her trip and try to live vicariously through her! We appreciate you for hanging out with us and for all of your support. Who is Timothy Olyphant? He might as well have been some heavy cavalry commander at the battle of the Pelennor Fields. As for Nathan Fillion, nuff said, loser. So it is that Shona joins Shaun on the remedial "Stuff We Should Have Seen" program while the rest of us enjoy Santa Clarita, a trip down Wisteria Lane with entrails. That guy from Friends, no not that guy, the brother, stars in Sneaky Pete where he pretends to be someone else, wow, imagine if he gets caught? Milla Jovovichichichich defies the second law of thermohotnessdynamics and transfers her entropy to any mother fucker in her way in Resident Evil The Final Chapter.
The Battle of Pelennor Fields is ranging outside of Minas Tirith and what started as a joyful decimation of evil has turned into a desperate onslaught. Dernhelm, Merry and Theoden encounter the Witch King of Angmar and the enemies numbers are growing. Jonathan, Katie and Chase discuss these events along with how incredibly epic this chapter is.
This week we review Update 18: The Battle of Pelennor Fields.
