Would you listen to your leadership encourage you to get on social if they themselves don't? No, probably not. It would be like hiring a fitness trainer who didn't ever workout. They don't have any credibility! As we exit 2024 there are some specific reflections I have made over the year, and one of them is being WHO you are and allowing that piece to shine through in your content. I am NOT saying the mortgage conversations don't matter, I am saying they should be second. In this episode I get the pleasure of interviewing Montell Watson, who leads multicultural markets for MovementMortgage and whose wife Emily happens to also run an influencer social marketing company. This is important because we talk about perspectives of leadership, we also talk about what it's like being married to an influencer, and Montell shares some VERY interesting perspectives that make my predication for 2025 feel very spot on. “Those of us growing up in consumerist society, when confronted with a problem, our tendency is to add a whole bunch of cumbersome variables to the equation. So, if we're experiencing pain in our relationship, I'll speak for myself, every time we were really, really suffering and not doing well. It did not occur to me once to break up. I was like, you know what we need to do? We need to go on another vacation. Or we need to get another cat. Or we need to replace all our furniture. I don't regret any of my cats. But I was like, we need to add variables to the equation in order to fix this problem. Even though the much more efficient decision would have been maybe to scale back, reassess, take something away. And, I quote a study when talking about that subject, where participants were presented with a spatial puzzle involving colored blocks, and they could either solve the puzzle by adding or taking away colored blocks from this puzzle. The vast majority of participants opted for the much more overly complicated solution, which was to add a whole bunch of color blocks, whereas the much simpler but less intuitive solution would just be to take one single colored block away. We don't often think to take things away to solve a problem.” So says Amanda Montell, the author of the New York Times bestseller The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality, as well as Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism and Wordslut. Amanda is a linguistics major from NYU and all of her work centers around the way that words—and thoughts—shape our minds, and how our minds are permeable to other factors, whether it's the halo effect, confirmation bias, or Cult-like sensibilities. Amanda is also the host of a podcast, “Sounds like a Cult.” Okay, let's get to our conversation. New York Times Bestselling author Amanda Montell visits Google to discuss her book “The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality.” “Magical thinking” can be broadly defined as the belief that one's internal thoughts can affect unrelated events in the external world - think of the conviction that one can manifest their way out of poverty, stave off cancer with positive vibes, or thwart the apocalypse by learning to can their own peaches. In all its forms, magical thinking works in service of restoring agency amid chaos, but Montell argues that in the modern information age, our brain's coping mechanisms have been overloaded, and our irrationality turned up to eleven. Montell's book delves into a cornucopia of the cognitive biases that run rampant in our brains, from how the “halo effect” cultivates the worship or hatred of larger-than-life celebrities, to how the “sunk cost fallacy” can keep us in detrimental relationships long after we've realized they're not serving us. As she illuminates these concepts with her signature brilliance and wit, Montell's prevailing message is one of hope, empathy, and ultimately forgiveness for our anxiety-addled human selves. If you have all but lost faith in our ability to reason, Montell aims to make some sense of the senseless. Visit http://youtube.com/TalksAtGoogle/ to watch the video.

Language is likely to be the first thing we're willing to change about ourselves and the last thing to leave when being influenced by cultish organizations or personalities. 2. No all cultish organizations are bad and it's good to evaluate them on a 3-level categorization. 3. As we search for connection and belonging we need to be aware of the different characteristics of cultish behavior. Jonelle Melton was a social studies teacher at Red Bank Middle School, where her passion for history inspired and engaged her students. She had even attended President Barack Obama's inauguration in January 2009, and shared the experience with her students and colleagues.Tragically, in the months following this historical event, Jonelle Melton was tortured and murdered in her apartment. Her case remained unsolved for a number of years, demonstrating that it is not always the usual suspects who are responsible for a murder. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/murderintheblack/message

Every generation has its own brand of crisis. As far as writer, linguist, and podcaster Amanda Montell is concerned, celebrity worship, conspiracy theories and a tad of mysticism is a crisis. She says our shared grasp of reality is slipping. She says the rise in irrationality is a response to information overload in the digital age. She offers a message of hope that we can regain our ability to reason in her new book, The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality.
Is it just us, or does American culture have narcissismfever? Between 2004 and 2016, the volume of Google searches for the word “narcissist” grew exponentially. Thanks to factors like the rise of therapyspeak, TikTok mental health diagnoses, and badly behaving reality stars-turned-world leaders, discourse about this buzzy, yet poorly understood phenomenon has exploded. Are we as a society becoming more narcissistic? Or are we now over-using and misusing this term to the point of meaninglessness? Wait, is obsessing about other people's narcissism its own kind of narcissism?? In an effort to soothe these thought spirals, host Amanda (@amanda_montell) settled in for an illuminating chat with her debut guest, psychologist Dr. Ramani Durvasula (@doctorramani), author of the New York Times bestseller "It's Not You" and one of the world's foremost narcissism experts. This week, Amanda Montell (linguist and bestselling author of Cultish) is back on the pod for the first time since the LuLaRoe deep dive. This time, they're discussing Amanda's new book (out April 9) called The Age of Magical Overthinking, which explores our cognitive biases and the power, disadvantages, and highlights of magical thinking. Broadly defined as the belief that one's internal thoughts can affect unrelated events in the external world, the book (and this episode) examines topics like celebrity worship, manifesting babes, therapy speak, toxic relationships, weaponized nostalgia, conspiracy theories, and other categories where our inner mental gymnasts are doing the most to justify our behavior. We're in the era of overthinking, according to linguist and author Amanda Montell. She stops by The Bright Side to talk about her new book “The Age of Magical Overthinking,” and how our brains process the information overload we're bombarded with on a daily basis. Plus, Reese's Book Club pick for April is “The Most Fun We Ever Had” by Claire Lombardo. Claire will join us for a conversation at the end of the month — and she'll be taking your questions! Why do human beings make terrible decisions? Is it our fault or is technology programming us to be irrational? Let's get into it with Renaissance Woman Amanda Montell, podcaster, linguist and author of the new book The Age of Magical Overthinking: Notes on Modern Irrationality. Why do we develop parasocial relationships with influencers and celebrities? Why do people have a baby to save a marriage? We may not have all the answers, but we do offer a little bit of hope for a more rational future.BUY AMANDA'S BOOK HERE - The Age of Magical OverthinkingORDER THE SICILIAN INHERITANCE HERE

[video available on spotify] today i present to you, amanda montell: a writer, linguist, and fellow podcast host. amanda has written three books. one of them, the age of magical overthinking, is about to come out. today i want to zoom in on one of our many common interests. she wrote an entire book about cults, the language used in cults, and cult-like behavior, and i'm excited to discuss how we participate in cult-like behavior on a day-to-day basis without even realizing it. she's really investigated the line between what is a cult and what is just cult-like behavior. and this is something I am curious to explore because I think it's a little bit more relevant than we even realize. Today's episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Hey everybody, hope your summer was frickin' great. We're working on all-new episodes of A Little Bit Culty, coming in hot ANY DAY now, but for this sultry, late summery time we wanted to revisit our cool, culty archives and put together some mashups of our greatest hits for you. We'll be back soon with all new cult-busting content, and we're dropping fresh new episodes every week on Patreon in the meantime. Until we meet in the feed again - here's our first Summer Remix featuring some of our PERSONAL favorite interviews of all time. So let's do this shall we? —— If you're a cult member, you hate them… but if you're a fan of A Little Bit Culty, you can'thelp but love the three cult-busting guests we are featuring on today's episode. First up is the Amanda Montell, a writer, language scholar, and the author of two critically acclaimed books: Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism and Wordslut: A Feminist Guide to Taking Back the English Language (HarperWave). Her books have earned praise from The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and others, and Amanda is currently developing Wordslut for television with FX Studios. Amanda's writing has been featured in Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Teen Vogue, Refinery29, and Who What Wear, where she formerly served as the Features & Beauty Editor. She is also the creator and co-host of the comedy-cult podcast, Sounds Like A Cult. Next is actor, activist, and epic badass Evan Rachel Wood whose impressive AF resume also includes: “Most likely to be hideously trolled by the Marilyn Manson stans of the world.” If you've seen the HBO Max mini-series Phoenix Rising which chronicles her fight to break away from the rocker formerly known as Brian Warner, you've already seen the culty wafting offa that dude like a bad cologne. We caught up with Evan to talk about her journey to hell and back, how she's doing now, and why she won't ever stop blowing the whistle on complete fuckery. As a note to our listeners, and our lawyers, Mr. Manson has repeatedly denied multiple sexual assault allegations from multiple women and is currently suing Evan for defamation over the accusations, claiming it's all part of an elaborate organized attack. Please note that conversations like the one you're about to hear can be traumatizing for abuse survivors. Listen to this episode with caution, and if you or anyone you know needs support, see our site for free resources. Also please note that we love Evan Rachel Wood and believe her without reservation. Sorry, not fucking sorry Manson Stans. Finally - and perhaps most controversially – is Ekhart Tolle – who is widely recognized as one of the most inspiring spiritual leaders in the world. His international bestsellers have been translated into 52 languages. And we can't verify this, but he might be one of the MOST quoted and/or misquoted contemporary spiritual gurus ever. Also, for the record, our listeners had a LOVE/HATE reaction to this guest. Can't please everybody! Let us know what you think. Also… Let it be known far and wide, loud and clear that… The views and opinions expressed on A Little Bit Culty do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the podcast. Today on Here's Where It Gets Interesting, Sharon is joined by author Amanda Montell to talk about all things cultish. There isn't always a standard definition of a cult, but there are things to look for, and we've all fallen for cultish practices or groups before. Language is often used as a tool of influence, like thought-terminating cliches, mantra phrases that are used to shut down independent thinking or questioning. Cultish leaders also take advantage of people by relying on our confirmation biases. We may think we couldn't be fooled into joining a cult, but human nature is full of mystic moments and irrationality; it's inevitable that we've joined a few cults along the way.Special thanks to our guest, Amanda Montell, for joining us today.
