Ambrose Bierce - A Estrada Enluarada (conto)

Essas obras formam a base moral, científica e filosófica do Espiritismo. Musicas: - 01. Mind Tricks - Experia (Epidemic) - 02. Dark Music - The Sealed Kingdom (Epidemic) - 03. Bobbie Wickham has a sort of gravitational pull when it comes to Bertie Wooster and sticky wickets. And she's at it again. P.G. Wodehouse, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.   Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast, where an audiobook format gives you an immersive experience in classic literature. You can get friendlier with the classics you know, and discover new favorites. I'm your host BJ Harrison.  I'm glad you could join us.   I sent out a newsletter this week with links to our new products, a note on other stuff we've got coming down the pike, and a link to a hidden gem in the library. If you missed it, check your inboxes. I try to keep it short, sweet, and convenient.   For years, I listened to David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens every year. There was just something nourishing when I revisited that story. There still is. The characters, the themes, the masterful language, it was a literary feast – and I always picked up something new. I don't know how you are, but sometimes I'm not at a place where I can handle a book. It just doesn't work for some reason. Then, a year or two later maybe, the same book absolutely hits the spot.   With the audiobook library card, you can always find something that will meet you where you are. And you can start, stop, try again, as much as you want. In a Wodehouse mood? Dozens of hours. Need to scratch a historical itch? How about Plutarch's Lives of famous Greeks and Romans, or The Count of Monte Cristo? Coming up on 19 years of personally narrated audiobooks.     Also, you don't need to place orders. Buttons to download each title are found in the product description. It's super easy to bop around and see what you like. Now, you can share it with friends, family, or clients. Whatever works.   Go to audiobooklibrarycard.com and choose the plan that's right for you.   Now for our Word for the Week, by Ambrose Bierce. In this segment, we hear from the Devil's Lexicographer himself, as he delivers one of his caustic definitions.   The Word for the Week is Twice, and here to read it is Ambrose Bierce himself:   TWICE, adv. Bierce was one of the earliest writers to explore the idea of an invisible monster, long before it became a staple of modern horror. The Damned Thing originally appeared in Town Topics in 1893 and later in Bierce's collection In the Midst of Life. Its documentary style, dry wit, and slow‑building dread make it one of his most memorable supernatural works. How can Michael and his companions hope to cross the mile wide Yenisei River, with no boat, raft or ferry? Jules Verne, today on The Classic Tales Podcast.   Welcome to The Classic Tales Podcast, where we use an audiobook format to give you an immersive experience in classic literature. You can get friendlier with the classics you know, and discover new favorites. I'm your host BJ Harrison. I'm a professional audiobook narrator, and I'm glad you could join us.   With the Audiobook Library Card, you gain access to everything I've personally curated from the public domain and recorded over the past 18 years. Every title was chosen with intent because it was calling to me for some reason. I needed to record it. After 18 and a half years of doing this, we're still winning awards and turning heads.     Subscribe for the Audiobook Library Card for $9.99 a month and get access to it all. Thousands of hours of content at your disposal. It's the best audiobook deal on the internet.   Go to audiobooklibrarycard.com or follow the link in the show notes, and download and listen all you want.   I've discovered a new and easier way to listen to the audiobooks downloaded from the store, through the Audiobook Library Card or otherwise – it's the PocketBook App. It's just a little more intuitive than the KyBook app, and it's available for iPhone and Android. Links can be found in the show notes. I've also made a new video walkthrough so you can see how easy it is to download and listen using Pocketbook. Feel free to check it out.   Before we dive into today's story, I want to start a new little feature called the Word for the Week. Each week, we'll have a definition from the Devil's Lexicographer himself – Ambrose Bierce. Over the course of 30 years, Bierce nearly weekly wrote a cynical definition of a common word, sometimes consisting of poems, which he sold to various newspapers and periodicals. After 30 years, he collected all of these into one volume which came to be called The Devil's Dictionary. In keeping with the spirit of its creation, we'll hear one of his jocular definitions before we begin today's show.   So, the Word for the Week is Infancy, and here to read it is Ambrose Bierce himself:   INFANCY, n. The period of our lives when, according to Wordsworth, "Heaven lies about us." The world begins lying about us pretty soon afterward.   Thank you Mr. Bierce.   And now, Michael Strogoff, Part 8 of 9, by Jules Verne.   Follow this link and watch the new video walkthrough using PocketBook.   Follow this link to get The Audiobook Library Card for a special price of $9.99/month       Follow this link to subscribe to our YouTube Channel:       Follow this link to subscribe to the Arsène Lupin Podcast:     Follow this link to follow us on Instagram:     Follow this link to follow us on Facebook:

This week on Astonishing Legends, we conclude our two-part exploration into the enigmatic disappearance of Ambrose Bierce. Last week, we chronicled his vibrant life and career, culminating in his mysterious 1913 journey into Mexico.  This week, we delve deeper, examining the turbulent backdrop of the Mexican Revolution and how it might have played a role in his vanishing. Was Bierce a casualty of the conflict, caught in the crossfire? Or, as some suggest, did he become a victim of Pancho Villa himself?  We explore these theories, considering his known disdain for aging and his fascination with unsolved mysteries, mirroring themes throughout his own macabre writings.  A missing letter and conflicting accounts spark questions about hidden agendas and the possibility of a meticulously planned exit.  While the Grand Canyon suicide theory persists, we weigh the evidence and consider alternative explanations, including the intriguing, if improbable, fringe theories involving crystal skulls and ancient ruins in the Paquimé region of Mexico.  Ultimately, we're left to ponder whether Bierce's disappearance was a carefully crafted narrative, a tragic accident, or something far more extraordinary.  Join us as we uncover the clues and confront the enduring puzzle of Bierce's final act. Not long after, Bierce disappeared completely, and years of searches have not brought any concrete evidence of what happened to him- but the legend told by those who daid they saw him or knew of him in his last days tells the story very much like the one he envisioned. This week, we go back to the 1850's to meet a writer named Ambrose Bierce.  A man who could trace his family back to the Puritans and didn't care one whit.  A man who fought in the Civil War so he could help see slavery abolished.  A man who wrote against what he saw as the evils of his day even standing between a railroad magnate and his company trying to arrange to have a loan given them by the government forgiven.  His stories told tales of war and horror and he inspired writers like Stephen Crane and H. P. Lovecraft.  He also disappeared mysteriously and to this day no one knows exactly how or why in this crazy episode of the Family Plot Podcast!Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.

Short fiction fans, here's another episode tailor-made for you. Jude and John sit down and discuss some of our personal "unforgettable" short stories - not necessarily our all-time favorites, but the ones that we just can't get out of our heads... sometimes years or even decades after having read them. A few classics are discussed here (Bierce, Lovecraft, Poe, Wharton, O'Connor) - but for the most part, we try to bring up stories that may not be as well-known or widely anthologized. What follows is a classic BXC conversation that blends the heart-breaking, horrific, hopeful and the "holy sh*t!" into a big stew. We expect it will be seasoned to your liking!

Our week of Scary Stories for Halloween continues with another tale from 1907. Ambrose Bierce was a short story writer, journalist, poet, and a veteran of the American Civil War. He was born in Meigs County, Ohio in a log cabin in 1842. How and where did his life come to an end? We don't know. In 1913, Bierce told reporters that he was travelling to Mexico to gain first-hand experience of the Mexican Revolution. He disappeared and was never seen again. First published in Cosmopolitan in January 1907, The Moonlit Road by Ambrose Bierce… Tomorrow on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, He was told the brightly colored red room in Lorraine Castle was haunted. Despite vague warnings from the three custodians who reside in the castle, he is not a believer in such things and ascends to "the Red Room" to begin his night's vigil. That's tomorrow on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

[ARCHIVES] Ambrose Bierce was an American Civil War veteran. As a Union soldier Bierce fought in many battles, was wounded, and went on to become a pioneer in the horror genre, helping introduce the psychological thriller to the American story. American tradition is steeped in rich horror and veterans like Bierce who have taken their experiences in war and service and twisted them into terrifying tales for the public are a staple in that tradition. Edgar Allen Poe, a king of the American gothic, had a stint in the Army, enlisting under a fake name and age in 1827. Rod Serling, the creator and host of The Twilight Zone, fought in World War II, earning a bronze star and purple heart before going on to terrifying millions with dark, otherworldly frights on TV. These are some of the few, but impactful authors who have transposed the horrors of war into macabre fiction – and today, that tradition continues. On this episode of Fire Watch, we explore that tradition through contemporary authors – who are also veterans – in a reading of Bierce's An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.  This episode contains adult themes, violence and swearing. Sound effects courtesy of Zapsplat.com. In this episode: Drew F. Lawrence, Briane Keene, Jonathan Raab, Dacia Arnold, Russell James and Weston Ochse.

In October of 1888, three articles about strange, unsolved disappearances were published in the San Francisco Examiner. In the first, a slave owner in Alabama vanishes into thin air right before a group of eyewitnesses. In the second, a drunk Englishman takes a bet he can't run to the next town without stopping and vanishes without a trace after stumbling, nearly falling, but never hitting the ground. And in the third, a sixteen-year-old boy leaves his family's farmhouse to get some water from the nearby spring and is never seen again—even though his voice is heard on several occasions by his family, crying out from a distance, before growing fainter and fainter over the course of months and eventually fading away entirely. What these three articles had in common, aside from their mysterious nature, was the name of the author: Ambrose Bierce. Today, the stories are known far and wide and have become practically enmeshed in the DNA of modern paranormal lore—told and retold so many times that they've turned into urban legends that entirely ignore their origins. What may not be as well known, however, is the fact that Bierce himself would later become one of the most famous unsolved mysterious disappearances of the 20th century. What happened to Ambrose Bierce?
