Chapter 4 - TreebeardQ1 - Do you think the God of Middle Earth is causing all these things to happen?‘Hm, but you are hasty folk, I see,' said Treebeard. ‘I am honoured by your confidence; but you should not be too free all at once. There are Ents and Ents, you know; or there are Ents and things that look like Ents but ain't, as you might say. I'll call you Merry and Pippin, if you please – nice names. For I am not going to tell you my name, not yet at any rate.' A queer half-knowing, half-humorous look came with a green flicker into his eyes. ‘For one thing it would take a long while: my name is growing all the time, and I've lived a very long, long time; so my name is like a story. Real names tell you the story of the things they belong to in my language, in the Old Entish as you might say. It is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time to say anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a long time to say, and to listen to.Q2 - What do you think of Treebeard and Ents?Q3 - Where are the Entwives? There is naught that an old Ent can do to hold back that storm: he must weather it or crack.‘I think that I now understand what he is up to. He is plotting to become a Power. He has a mind of metal and wheels; and he does not care for growing things, except as far as they serve him for the moment. And now it is clear that he is a black traitor. He has taken up with foul folk, with the Orcs. Brm, hoom! Worse than that: he has been doing something to them; something dangerous. For these Isengarders are more like wicked Men. It is a mark of evil things that came in the Great Darkness that they cannot abide the Sun; but Saruman's Orcs can endure it, even if they hate it. I wonder what he has done? Are they Men he has ruined, or has he blended the races of Orcs and Men? That would be a black evil!'Q4 - How did Saruman fall, and what do you think is the Great Darkness?Q5 - What do you think of the Entmoot and the march on Isenguard?Chapter 5 - The White Rider‘We have journeyed a long way round,' said Legolas. ‘We could have all come here safe together, if we had left the Great River on the second or third day and struck west. Few can foresee whither their road will lead them, till they come to its end.'Q1 - What did you think about the Gandalf reveal?‘What then shall I say?' said Gandalf, and paused for a while in thought. ‘This in brief is how I see things at the moment, if you wish to have a piece of my mind as plain as possible. The Enemy, of course, has long known that the Ring is abroad, and that it is borne by a hobbit. He knows now the number of our Company that set out from Rivendell, and the kind of each of us. But he does not yet perceive our purpose clearly. He supposes that we were all going to Minas Tirith; for that is what he would himself have done in our place. And according to his wisdom it would have been a heavy stroke against his power. Indeed he is in great fear, not knowing what mighty one may suddenly appear, wielding the Ring, and assailing him with war, seeking to cast him down and take his place. That we should wish to cast him down and have no one in his place is not a thought that occurs to his mind. That we should try to destroy the Ring itself has not yet entered into his darkest dream. In which no doubt you will see our good fortune and our hope. For imagining war he has let loose war, believing that he has no time to waste; for he that strikes the first blow, if he strikes it hard enough, may need to strike no more. So the forces that he has long been preparing he is now setting in motion, sooner than he intended. Wise fool. For if he had used all his power to guard Mordor, so that none could enter, and bent all his guile to the hunting of the Ring, then indeed hope would have faded: neither Ring nor bearer could long have eluded him. But now his eye gazes abroad rather than near at home; and mostly he looks towards Minas Tirith. Very soon now his strength will fall upon it like a storm.Q2 - Does Sauron really not think they are trying to destroy the ring??‘Wait a minute!' cried Gimli. ‘There is another thing that I should like to know first. Was it you, Gandalf, or Saruman that we saw last night?' ‘You certainly did not see me,' answered Gandalf, ‘therefore I must guess that you saw Saruman. Evidently we look so much alike that your desire to make an incurable dent in my hat must be excused.'Q3 - Did they really see Saruman?Q4 - What do you think of this Saruman plan?We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. They were not made by Durin's folk, Gimli son of Glo´in. Far, far below the deepest delvings of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. Q5 - Thoughts on Gandalf's fight with the Balrog?Q6 - What do you think Galadriel's message meant to the trio?Where now are the Du´nedain, Elessar, Elessar? Why do thy kinsfolk wander afar? Near is the hour when the Lost should come forth, And the Grey Company ride from the North. But dark is the path appointed for thee: The Dead watch the road that leads to the Sea. To Legolas she sent this word: Legolas Greenleaf long under tree In joy thou hast lived. Beware of the Sea! If thou hearest the cry of the gull on the shore, Thy heart shall then rest in the forest no more.' Gandalf fell silent and shut his eyes. ‘Then she sent me no message?' said Gimli and bent his head. ‘Dark are her words,' said Legolas, ‘and little do they mean to those that receive them.' ‘That is no comfort,' said Gimli. ‘What then?' said Legolas. ‘Would you have her speak openly to you of your death?' ‘Yes, if she had naught else to say.' ‘What is that?' said Gandalf, opening his eyes. ‘Yes, I think I can guess what her words may mean. Your pardon, Gimli! I was pondering the messages once again. But indeed she sent words to you, and neither dark nor sad. ‘ ‘‘To Gimli son of Glo´in,'' she said, ‘‘give his Lady's greeting. Lockbearer, wherever thou goest my thought goes with thee. But have a care to lay thine axe to the right tree!'' ' ‘In happy hour you have returned to us, Gandalf,' cried the Dwarf, capering as he sang loudly in the strange dwarf-tongue. ‘Come, come!' he shouted, swinging his axe. ‘Since Gandalf's head is now sacred, let us find one that it is right to cleave!'Chapter 6 - The King of the Golden HallQ1 - What are your thoughts on Erodas?Q2 - What are your thoughts on Wormtongue?Q3 - Was there spellwork over Theoden?

They say bad company corrupts good character; we'll leave it to you to decide whether the title refers to the Dead Men of Dunharrow, or your hosts, Alan and Don, as we finish our journey through the Paths of the Dead! We talk about Tolkien's ability to write genuinely terrifying moments, Alan wonders why the Grey Company didn't bring more torches, and Gimli thinks about raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens — anything to get him through this dark place. Alan let's Don try his hand at writing an intro sequence, and, finally, the King of the Dead leaves you with this chilling challenge… to find a way out!

Well this one is an emotional rollercoaster - the last Tolkien chapter has arrived, and we finally get a peek behind the curtain! Tolkien gives us a glimpse of Middle-earth's heaven and much more information about the strange magical cancer that awaits everyone who spends too much time with a magical object. Then Sam takes his place as the new historian / protagonist / leader of the Grey Company, the story begins anew, and we finally know the ending of The Lord of the Rings. Join us next week as we begin to discuss the Return of the King movie and our last installment of Christopher Tolkien's History of LOTR. Eowyn tries to keep Aragorn away from the way of the dead. Sorry my voice is a bit lispy on this one- I have an ulcer on the very top of my tongue!
Aragorn gets a fright when staring into his phone
Book Six of LOTR starts off with a bang as Sam takes over as Ringbearer / protagonist and Tolkien immediately forces him to re-enact Die Hard. Cam continues to develop his “Grey Company” theory as Sam tries to play all the role of every member of the original fellowship and survive his awful journey through the tower. We discuss the Ring planting visions of temptation in both Frodo and Sam's minds, and Maggie decides Sam is the best possible Ringbearer in Middle-earth, even more so than Tommy “Dabomba” Bombadil. Then Tolkien makes his timeline all fuzzy and gives Sam a Prisoner of Azkaban moment, which triggers his superpower and breaks the fourth wall! This Tolkien guy, I'll tell ya – quite the writer when he wants to be! Feedback & Theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com Instagram: @secondbreakfastpod YouTube: https://bit.ly/2OT6RP3
Of all the chapters we've covered so far, this one probably benefits most from our close reading analysis. Aragorn gathers the captains for a Council of Elrond redux, but the differences from that first meeting are extremely revealing. We finally, and quietly, learn the limits of Gandalf the White and “doubt” is introduced as the most powerful weapon against enlightenment / knowledge. Tolkien also sets the stage for the sort of graveyard blowout I wanted from GOT's finale while also kinda re-enacting a classic scene from Macbeth. On the other side of things, we have a glorious reunion between Gimli, Legolas, Merry, and Pippin that is an avalanche of callbacks, payoffs, and bookends. Three types of hype, another appearance / interpretation of the “Grey Company,” and almost every strange little idea or theory we've brought up in the past few months. It's kinda creepy and feels a little like Tolkien has been reading our minds from beyond the grave – or maybe he's just that good a writer! Do you not know who Prince Imrahil is? Or Erkenbrand? Then you've seen the film but not read the book. In this episode, we talk about why you really must go back to the book to get the war. Do you have views on what has been left out by the film adaptation of LotR? Starting with the fine details left out of the Peter Jackson movies, we visit our favourite missing characters - Erkenbrand, the Grey Company, Beregond and Bergil, Prince Imrahil. Tolkien deserves to be taken seriously as a war writer so we compared him with previous war writers, ranging from Tolstoy, Thackeray to Shakespeare, then put him alongside his contemporaries, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, the war poets, Cecil Lewis, etc. plus a visit to a modern writer, Tamora Pierce who remembers the human cost in the shape of displaced people and refugees. Also mentioned or quoted are John Garth, Tolkien and the Great War, and Joseph Loconte, A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War.
What a chapter title! Who is the Grey Company – is it the new, lean and mean fellowship led by Aragorn or is it the parade of metaphorical ghosts and literal corpses that now follows our heroes? Join Cam and Maggie for a spirited investigation of this question and many more. Aragorn really comes into his own here as the one true successor to Gandalf the Grey, and we've got quotes and theories galore! He's got his own Balrog moment, his own Council of Elrond moment, his own Palantir moment, even his own nod-to-a-secret-and-magical-past “Mithrandir” moment! For Second Breakfast this week, we dive back into Christopher Tolkien's History of Lord of the Rings series for a gold rush of revelations and intriguing little behind-the-scenes nuggets. Learn about the early draft where Aragorn murdered Boromir, the Balrog's close ties to Saruman, the identity of the Nazgûl's winged mounts, and Gandalf's secret (terrifying) ability to manifest and project his thoughts into the physical world! After contemplating the ambiguous chapter title, we analyze Aragorn’s choice (if a true choice it is) to take the “paths of the Dead.” Other themes are the tension between Éowyn and Aragorn (and the second-person pronouns they use), the oath-breaker’s “worship” of Sauron in days past that led to their curse, and the solemn ritual […]

What should the Grey Company feel when the build up for the Pallid Court visit had been months in the making, to finally meet a powerful NPC, maybe an ally, and ... she’s not there! Instead new NPCs, and one that sounds strikingly similar to a well known pop-culture villain. What are the rules for breaking an attunement? The consequences of player decisions; going left instead of going right? Should the GM use NPCs to remind characters how magics work? When to have downtime when 11 months pass IRL and only 2 weeks within the game? Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
This is the first episode for 2019 and it is good to be back! This week we return to Per-Bastet and connect with the Grey Company once more. After days within the game but months in real life, the company returns to the Pallid Court to provide the evidence they collected at the Pool of Blood. What and how plot seeds can be as powerful as big reveal moments to make the story more immersive, using discord and Fantasy Grounds to maximise that reveal, and what is inherent value for a GM comes from these moments? Hello good people of the interwebs,This is our last episode for 2018, and let me say that it’s been a blast creating these podcasts! Sitting down with Mick each Saturday, for coffee and chatter about our campaign ... but damn I do enjoy these conversations and I really hope that you have as well!So join Mick and I as we wrap up our conversation from last week. The Grey Company part ways to explore; a little free time before needing to meet with the Pallid Court later that evening. What does a Paladin feel or sense when praying? When the party splits and you need time to plot and think ... scene cut! How crazy can you get with creative descriptions for really crappy skill check rolls? Where does Typhoid Mary and the Ebola come into Embers from a Chimney? Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about using a dagger to cut a bowstring. What happens when an invisible wizard gets smoked with an arrow, does the arrow disappear? Does the blood appear? Hey I’m invisible, they can’t hear me ... not! Should melee attacks with a swinging weapon be at disadvantage in a narrow passage? What is the wingspan of your tiefling? Should that span be on the character sheet, and if it's not, it defaults to wee tiny Puff the Magic Dragon size? A secret Dogs of Bastet sewer hideout must have treasure ... right? What will the Grey Company find? Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about lessons learned from swimming through sewage water, what checks should be done for sight, and to keep from vomiting. Can you have a sewer session without a giant crocodiles fight? Fantasy Grounds Unity release and its dynamic lighting can’t arrive soon enough so that this GM doesn’t have to remember rules around dim light, dark, darkvision, blindsight, etc. When you shoot an invisible wizard with an arrow, should the arrow turn invisible, or remain visible? The Grey Company enters the secret hideout and the alarms sound, should the NPCs have reactions? Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about accents, new players, first time at D&D, starting at level 1 to learn the Fantasy Grounds interface, stealing “good stuff” RP elements and making them your own, to better your own role play. How quickly, immersive role playing can make a three hour session fly by, and nothing is accomplished. “Fly-By” ... a Crimson Nib Flying Carpet is just what every would-be, serious, adventuring group needs! The Grey Company is seeking their missing benefactor, should they break and enter the home of a known criminal, that likes to murder and eat the ex-lovers of their benefactor? Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about an interesting role playing scenario when the Grey Company decides to make a quick stop at the house of Hakaan. Elbrim and Callidus are keen to B&E the house, and maybe find Daryl. Whereas the new party members have no idea what the older 2 members are about. Elbrim and Callidus’ uncomfort was palpable as they are barraged with questions. Cold-blooded murder and slavery! The GM loves every moment listening to such unexpected and delightful role playing gems! Mick spins many theories in this episode as he tries to connect the dots between a multitude of NPCs, while I listen closely and gather ammunition to alter the plot and make things more … convoluted! Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about GM’s using player theories to craft and mold the campaign ... wait ... is that legal, can you do that? How does one integrate a seamless skill challenge to replace travel, and not be deemed trivial? What should a GM do when the player’s wanna hire more players to do their dirty work? How can a famous show like Critical Role guide and help keep the group dynamic together when there is conflict and dice rolls against each other? And of course, whatever has the Grey Company decided to do with this Pool of Blood? Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about trapdoors; do you check for traps when there’s no rogue in the party? How old players take for granted that all backstory lore is known and the new players must act accordingly; whereas the new players are like WTF mate, why the hell are we gonna do that?! What IC secrets should you reveal, and how do you role play it, when the GM whispers information in your ear? Does IRL culture affect role playing, and should IC boundaries be softened when an obvious story element is introduced? These questions and more as the Grey Company decides whether or not to enter the trapdoor’s hole. Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about exploring from the deck of a sandship and experiencing the soaring and freezing temperatures of the Sarklan Desert! How the Grey Company convinces the captain, against her better judgement, to make haste and sail through the night; and how such persuasions can result in giant scorpions attacking the ship. What questions should you ask the strange Nkosi that just saved your bacon from a TPK? Should you believe gossip and rumours when your party is named? Do you start connecting the dots and map out a conservative governing regime that is on the verge of collapse as one of the governing members undermines the Council of Sands authority? Thank virtual tabletops, where players can’t see the GM’s facial expressions, as he falls off his chair in shock at such conclusions. Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about getting scolded in public by a daywalker for reneging on a promise. The Grey Company makes haste to get underway and begin their sandship voyage. They move quickly and are scolded once again by a harbour master that is shocked at adventurers without backpacks! Kalen’s hands are slapped for not having proper travel papers, nor Southlands Identification papers! In the moment between breaths, a dire sending stone call is received. The Princess Karima has not checked in. Enter the ethical quandry that is the Trolley Problem! What direction will the Grey Company take? Board the sandship and fulfill their promise to the Pallid Court, or renege once more and search for Elbrim’s, hoped for, sweety pie? Do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
The legal gymnastics finish as the mysterious vampire Ahit Nem-ur enters the conference room and scolds the participants. The Grey Company is reminded that they’ve promised to help the Pallid Court, and a sandship has been held at the ready for days. Kalen catches a strange sight as Ahit folds down into the earth and disappears, the others are oblivious as Cero discusses hiring their services to deal with the corrupt Hazi Sucineri. Back at their studio, they are mystified at how the owner had discovered that they had comprised the building; I mean who looks behind a hanging carpet to see if a hole has been put in the wall? But such quandaries must be tabled, now is the time for haste, time to return to the harbour and make their way to the Pool of Blood; suddenly a sending stone message from Lieutenant Mehmet arrives and ... do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
The GFA has met with Ranjeet of the Pallid Court, but the Grey Company is a no show to the meeting. Where did they go? A day later and after a strongly worded letter from Ranjeet, that threatens prosecution, the party arrives to the Pallid Court. Will they be forced to hand over Cobal’s Withered Hand artifact? A large contract is thrown on the conference table ... ack! Lawyer speak! Akmenos cracks his knuckles and steps forward, the growing renown of the Grey Company can not end moments after he’s finally met them! Kalen holds onto the withered hand tightly, distraught that he has no identification documents. Tensions are at an all-time high when the conference room door flies open, sunlight flares into the dark room, Ranjeet leaps for cover in the deep shadow; there silhouetted in the morning light stand ... do you wanna know more? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
Join Mick and I as we chat about taking a moment to recover from a battle within the tomb’s inner chamber, only to discover that your new potential companion, has been cursed. Should the Grey Company abandon this fellow? I mean, they don’t really know him! What of Rakim and Nakwa? Will they finally put their clothes on? Outside the pyramid Lugo and Hazi are arguing, but they quickly shore up the conversation and the GFA greet the wayward ambassadors for the Pallid Court. How sharp are the Grey Company’s swords or words? What’s the correct response when a temple priestess starts carving runes into the chest of a direly wounded companion? This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
The full Grey Company (!!) takes on The Siege of Gondor, The Ride of the Rohirrim, and The Battle of the Pelennor Fields! We talk bravery, World Wars, and cards.
Join Mick and I as we chat about, the Pyramid of Cobal and the untold dangers that lurk within! The Grey Company boards the Pallid Court’s sandship and plots the course to the Pool of Blood; but they don’t go far before Elbrim pays Captain Bonita to make a pitstop at the ruins of Anu Asir. Horrible skill checks find aid and advantage from the Pallid Court’s ship, and the Grey Company finds entrance into the ruins pyramid. Once inside the oppressive atmosphere weighs heavy on the company, stifling sound, dampening moods, and finding surprise around every corner. Within they find creepy crawlies, monsters, traps, and astonishing discoveries. Do you wanna know more?
How should a DM reward XP for role playing super bad / good Intelligence or Wisdom stats? The Grey Company moves to their new studio apartment after a meat-grinding day in the Growling Sanctuary! Captain Deuteronomy returns to haunt Callidus’ past. Many decisions lie before this wanna-be-intrepid group, but what is the smart move? Help the princess, or the Pallid Court, to deal with the Dogs of Bastet, or learn what has Elbrim so distracted? Once decided and a direction has been chosen, how far can one be carried with a bribe and a lot of charisma? Do you wanna know more?
Although SABR’s last words to Sil had been harsh, it had given him a modicum of peace from her barrage of pranks throughout the night. A shrill scream breaks his reverie, and on discovering its origin, SABR wakens Elbrim. The irrepressible Ownka, now battered, arrives at the tent, on orders to take the Grey Company back to the Sanctuary. Oraqi looks down at each of the holes in the chamber floor, watching the River of Sand speed past; Elbrim says, “It’s safe Callidus, trust me! You should go first, I am sure there is nothing to worry about and those raging currents of sand wouldn’t hurt a fly!” Carnage, cats and yellow dust, tell me, do you wanna know more?
There it is, somewhere down there, the next step! Bloody riddles! Bloody decoys! Bloody traps! It is then that the newest member of the Grey Company catches a hint of some whispered insight and their path is laid bare. Must all dangerous tombs be preceded by long dark halls, with sand that moves when there’s no wind? What the hell is a Imy-ut Ushabti, and oh Gods, why is it vomiting scarabs? Let’s call it a morning, retreat home, and put on our Sunday formals, there’s a ball to attend! Now what’s this? To enter we must give blood? Do you wanna know more?
Elbrim’s patron has sent a present, what form does it take? Whereas the Kell brother’s past returns with a vengeance; oh how a haunting would have been preferable! Then arrives an affable gnoll named Oraqi, having found the Grey Company by following a Pool of the Sky vision, followed by the Princess Karima, anxious to have the Grey Company deal with a growing threat! How big is this threat and what agency funds the Princess? Can they connect the dots and help the Princess Karima, thereby earning the plush river Nuria studio apartment she promised? Do you wanna know more?
Post-fireball, Callidus is the last standing member of the Grey Company; he counts on luck and uses the chaotic Vril Stone, nearly falling to a feedback backlash! Seriously wounded, the Grey Company hasn’t a leg to stand on when they face Zubayr’s sister, the Sweet Hasna. Can they challenge her and claim the corpse of her brother? Will Callidus’ documents, bribed from the Dome of the Divine Face of Bastet, prove stronger than Hasna’s documents, sealed by Councilor Akman-Sut? Will the gearforged paladin SABR, prove to be the straw that breaks the camel's back? How will the Grey Company face their benefactor the Princess Karima, and who is trying to escape notice by hiding in a coffin? Wanna know more?
