Bilbo wakes up from his nap just in time to pass the Old Took; Alan and Shawn wake up from our nap just in time to pass the two-hour mark. Join The Man of the West and The Lord of the Mark as Sam finally figures out where Frodo is going in the last of our three episodes on The Grey Havens - and the final episode of our six-season journey through The Lord of the Rings. Gildor makes an appearance; Frodo makes a sacrifice; Sam makes the long journey home in silence (where the nights are gettin' strange since he's gone). We fanboy over Círdan, discover there was room for Shadowfax, and talk about a most Anglo-Saxon ending. Also, Bilbo and Frodo have words for Celebrimbor.
Rosie is the girl that keeps Sam up at night, so they get married; we are the podcast hosts that keep you up at night - all we ask from you is to subscribe. Join The Man of the West and The Lord of the Mark as anniversaries become dark days for Frodo in the second of our three episodes on The Grey Havens. Frodo suggests Sam and Rosie move in to Bag End with him; Merry and Pippin cut a great dash in the Shire; Sam receives a large book and a mandate to complete it. We suggest a new small business opportunity for Merry and Pippin, wonder precisely how Widow Rumble is looking after the Gaffer, and speculate about Arwen's QR code. Also: no, you shouldn't name your child Frodito, no matter what Shawn suggests.
Spring surpassed Sam's wildest hopes; Alan and Shawn are content just avoiding disappointment. Join The Man of the West and The Lord of the Mark as the hobbits let the good times roll while rebuilding the Shire in the first of three episodes on The Grey Havens. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins finds redemption and popularity; the Gaffer shouts random proverbs as he moves into his new digs; and it turns out that every grain is sacred, every grain is good. We speculate about Sandyman's future, feel sorry for the kids of Shire Reckoning 1419, and unanimously declare Rosie Cotton the Shire MVP. Also, Alan buys a copy of Fredegar Bolger's new book, The Lockholes Diet.
Welcome to Episode 13 of DO NOT BE HASTY - I'm calling this one "Sam at the Green Dragon"!"And I've heard tell that Elves are moving west. They do say they are going to the harbours, out away beyond the White Towers.'Sam waved his arm vaguely; neither he nor any of them knew how far it was to the Sea, past the old towers beyond the western borders of the Shire. But it was an old tradition that away over there stood the Grey Havens, from which at times elven-ships set sail, never to return."In this episode of DO NOT BE HASTY, we continue through The Shadow of the Past, as we listen in on Sam's speculations at the Green Dragon concerning Elves and Tree-men!This section begins with the words: “Little of all this, of course, reached the ears of ordinary hobbits.”And ends with: “...and they stayed up far into the night.”Join us!EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS:- Kaitlyn of Tea with Tolkien- John R- Melkor27- KG- SaberSystems- Jeremy DWATCH THE VIDEO » https://youtu.be/5YybnnhfQRQWATCH AD-FREE » https://www.patreon.com/posts/106218699/LISTEN AD-FREE » https://www.patreon.com/posts/106221711/FOLLOW & SUPPORT THE TOLKIEN ROAD:PATREON » SUPERFANS!TWITTERFACEBOOKINSTAGRAMLINKS & MATHOMS:- take 10% OFF Tolkien Road merch at True Myths Press » https://truemythspress.com/discount/TENOFF (enter code TENOFF at checkout)- listen to TOLKIEN'S WORKS for FREE » https://www.audibletrial.com/everon- buy Tolkien's Requiem » https://tolkiensrequiem.com/ - buy Tolkien's Overture » https://tolkiensoverture.com/SPECIAL THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING PATRONS:- John R- Kaitlyn of Tea with Tolkien- Melkor27- KG- SaberSystems- Jeremy D- Emilio P- Jonathan D- Richard K- Paul D- Julia- Werty- Chris B- Tuor91- Carolyn S- Emiel K- Brian O (the 2nd)- Jonathan R- Matthew W- Daniel D- Harrison C- Seb M- Willbo Baggins- Ms. Anonymous- Andrew T- Redhawk- Shannon S- Brian O (the 1st)- Zeke F- James L- Chris L- Asya V- Ish of the Hammer- Teresa C- David of Pints with Jack- Eric BAS WELL AS THOSE CELEBRATING THEIR PATRON ANNIVERSARY IN JUNE OF 2024- Richard BW- Teresa C- James LThank you so much for sticking with us over the years!!!
The Saturdays of our lives are sometimes our darkest hours, as we wait, like disciples of old, for the new life promised in Christ. In this episode, Mandy speaks to this darkness as we wait and hope. artwork: The Grey Havens, by Matt Stewart, as seen in the Middle-earth Collectible Card Game INTO THE WEST, Lyrics by Annie Lennox, Produced by Howard Shore Lay down Your sweet and weary head The night is falling You have come to journey's end Sleep now And dream of the ones who came before They are calling From across the distant shore Why do you weep? What are these tears upon your face? Soon you will see All of your fears will pass away Safe in my arms You're only sleeping What can you see On the horizon? Why do the white gulls call? Across the sea A pale moon rises The ships have come to carry you home And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water All Souls pass Hope fades Into the world of night Through shadows falling Out of memory and time Don't say We have come now to the end White shores are calling You and I will meet again And you'll be here in my arms Just sleeping And all will turn To silver glass A light on the water Grey ships pass Into the West READING: For Holy Saturday: Pg. 174-175 From: Have a Beautiful Terrible Day by Kate Bowler. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened usas seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no [e]chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.
This episode starts with a discussion of woke adaptations and ends with a discussion of the unavoidability of fiction in shaping your life. Would Nate be fine with having "woke" elements in a major adaptation of his films? His answer might surprise you. You'll hear war stories about ancestor worship in Hello Ninja (the show), the importance of a team with different strengths, and more war stories from the movie industry. Then they turn their attention to a claim from a pastor that "No work of fiction should ever change our worldview. As a Christian, my worldview is shaped by Scripture alone." Turns out, the Bible is full of stories, and (cue the Grey Havens opening music) -- STORIES ARE SOUL FOOD. How you handle the stories of the Bible will determine how you handle your own life stories. Try to get away from modernist thinking and start thinking like Solomon: add instead of remove. The episode ends with a strong endorsement of a life of imagination.#SASF #StoriesAreSoulFood #HelloNinja #Netflix #imagination #metaphors #ScriptureAlone #WorldviewOfStories
Månadens tips: kaffebryggmetoden Aeropress, poddnätverket Duckfeed.tv, samt TV-serien Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss their collective choice of topic: Peter Jackson's version of The Return of the King. It's been twenty years since the conclusion of Jackson's three-film effort to adapt the entire Lord of the Rings was released, and it was easily the biggest profile release of the series, coming in with massive interest and attention, setting a variety of box office records in the process along with gaining widespread critical acclaim. It all resulted in a series of worldwide film awards and honors culminating with a famed clean sweep of Oscar wins including best picture, resulting in a tie with Titanic and Ben-Hur with eleven Oscars total but also the only one of those three films to literally win every category it was nominated for, a combined record that still stands. The film's general impact and that of the series as a whole is at this point undeniable, but how it holds up in a look back, caught somewhat between Fellowship's own unquestionable triumph and Two Towers's more stop-and-go successes, warrants its own discussion. What are the many changes made to the tangled relationship between Frodo, Sam and Gollum, and how does that play out as a result for both the film and the wider themes? How does the use of practical models and actual landscapes feed into the feeling of how the film both landed in the moment and held up upon later rewatching, even while it was also the biggest demonstration yet of the possibilities for CGI with massive military clashes and the like? Is it possible to actually lose count of just how many remarkable moments on a grand scale exist throughout the film, even as there are various “well, but…” caveats and questions to raise along the way? How has the whole series of film changed both the perceptions of Tolkien and the film industry in general? And how many endings are there, after all? (Surprise! It never ended, it's running somewhere in a theater right now, maybe.)Show Notes.Jared's doodle. And that's another epic trilogy down. (The earlier entries here and here.)Hurrah for the SAG-AFTRA strike ending and better (not perfect!) terms won.Our episode on evil. Evil!TheOneRing.net report on the return of the Eagle & Child pub. Jason Horowitz's New York Times story about that Italian Tolkien exhibition encouraged by Italy's favorite fascists. Sorry, did we say the quiet part out loud? (In the Guardian, Jamie Mackey with more context.)Our episodes on Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, with lots of notes about the series as a whole so we won't repeat everything here…The sole trailer for The Return of the King. But that's all they needed.Trilogy Tuesday! It was a crazy time and it was great. Here's a photo of the all-day pass given out, and here's an example of that film frame memento given out as well. The opening scene is really something, no lie. Friendly little worm there. The screenwriting guru Ned mentions is Robert McKee – per Brian Sibley's Peter Jackson biography, McKee had come to Wellington, New Zealand to give one of his lectures in 1988, and the New Zealand Film Commission invited Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and future contributing screenwriter for The Two Towers Stephen Sinclair to it and they all apparently took it very much to heart. So a long term impact but even so.The opening exchange between Sam, Frodo and Gollum. Really are some beautifully shot moments in this sequence.Oh did Christopher Lee have things to say in the run-up to the theatrical release. Our episode on the Rankin-Bass Return of the King. It is NOT very good.Yeah yeah the Arwen vision and Arwen dying and…well whatever. But boy that introduction to Minas Tirith. THAT'S how to make an entrance. And the beacons sequence, wow, still. Time zone issues aside. For examples of the Gondor theme earlier on in the series, skip ahead to about a minute into this clip.Ride the Empire Builder! If you like.Hurrah for John Noble (and hurrah for Fringe). Skip ahead three minutes for “The rule of Gondor is MINE!” moment, and the parting between Denethor and Faramir, phew.Minas Morgul, a triumph of John Howe design, glowing and clamped. (The skybeam is the skybeam but the sonic buildup rules.)The Holdo maneuver (it really was great, like the film itself)When Theoden and Eowyn part at Dunharrow, boy that'll ruin ya. That's two good actors very much in the moment. When Aragorn and Eowyn part at Dunharrow, it is very…shippy.“...and Rohan will answer!” Perfect.“The stars are veiled.” Are they, Legolas?Oh you know the Shelob scene. You know. “The Edge of Night” sequence is unnerving, beautiful and horribly sad.The Nazgul as the angels of death, in essence. However petty.Grond! It is great design for sure, plus armored trolls.Gothmog isn't bothered with your petty trebuchets. The Ride of the Rohirrim. No notes. But here come the mumakil…“I am no man!” Yeah, it rules.Air Bud, the lingua franca of us all. That crazy Witch-king mace. Gotta love it.And indeed skip ahead to the end of the clip for that mumak takedown by the scrubbing bubbles. Plus Tracy Jordan with the wisdom. It still only counts as one, we guess.Sam finds Frodo in Cirith Ungol – it's a good moment!“On this good earth!” (Well, maybe not GREAT earth.)“I can carry you!” A beautiful sequence, no doubt. The Crack of Doom. Great acting moments, wonderful moment for Gollum, but not over the cliff again…And yeah when Mount Doom completely explodes…Will they? Won't they?A great way to do individual bows via a movie.“You bow to NO one.” (Cue big emotions.)A wordless toast indeed. And a pumpkin. (And a case of the not gays.)The Grey Havens sends us off. It really is a great Turner-inspired scene.“Into the West” and the end credit portraits. Great job Annie. (The young filmmaker who passed was Cameron Duncan, to correct Ned there.)The Triplets of Belleville is a real treat, see it when you can.Enjoy all the Oscar wins!Ah yes the Eragon movie. Welp. And the Chronicles of Narnia tried. But. (Good luck Greta!)This ran after the episode was recorded but the LA Times had a piece on the movie anniversary and its impact, especially in New Zealand itself. Our Rings of Power and Hobbit films episodes have more about our general qualms there.Want to hear those exclusive podcasts we're talking about on Megaphonic? The final review of the Lord of the Rings movie trilogy has finally arrived. Our hosts discuss their favorite and least favorite scenes of the movie, as well as the multiple endings.

Hello and welcome to Tea with Tolkien, an online community for the Hobbit at Heart. We are inspired by the works, life, and Catholic faith of JRR Tolkien and strive to encourage others towards a deeper love and understanding of Tolkien's Legendarium by hosting a free book club, providing free resources such as our Silmarillion Reader's guide, and cultivating a vibrant and positive online community. Our book club is currently reading through this newly released book, The Fall of Númenor, edited by Brian Sibley. If you'd like to join in on the discussion, you can sign up for our book club at www.teawithtolkien.com/book-club to receive the link to our discord server. For the sake of our book club, I've broken down The Fall of Numenor into ten sections and so today we'll be covering the second ‘section': Foundation of the Grey Havens through The Life of the Númenóreans (pg. 1- 42). I'll begin with a summary of each section, followed by a recap of our book club's discussion for those who may have missed our live chat. Episode 102 of our book read/podcast covering major topics in various fields of psychology moves us into PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION! This summer we are going to discuss religion from a psychological and historical perspective as we investigate the evolutionary origins and modern social systems of religion. In this episode we discuss HYPER REAL RELIGIONS and the influence of pop culture on religious systems and in some cases how they define and develop into religions and belief on its own. We discuss two in particular, Tolkienism, the belief of J.R.R. Tolkien as real history and Jediism and its growth across western countries. Correction: In this episode I (Daniel) state Gil-galad was the bearer of the ring of fire (Narya) and while he was given the ring by Celebrimbor it was based on to lieutenant Cirdan the shipwright at the Grey Havens who himself passed it on to Gandalf. Don't set sail from Grey Havens yet, my mellon. A new podcast about Lord of the Rings hits the shore just in time for Amazon Prime's "The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power" series. Host Alexander Mitchell and Jessica Lynn Verdi look at the show and lore from two different perspectives resulting in a fun, funny, and informative showl

“Well, I'm back… with the guys from Ringheads, finishing up the movie trilogy!” Slight paraphrase of Sam's closing words, we're sure Ronny Tolkien would approve. The ring's destroyed, the war is over, Frodo's back home at Bag End, but he ain't happy. He's busy editing and finishing Bilbo's written work, Christopher Tolkien style. We break down what happens to him and all the other characters after the story concludes, “end credits from Animal House” style. We also discuss the Grey Havens, and our boy Círdan (the Shipwright, not Círdan the Groundskeeper or Círdan the Deli Manager). And we talk about what comes next, for Middle-earth and Ringheads… something about grey rain curtains and silver glass. Thanks for joining us on the journey there and back again, look for us at the turn of the tide!
At last, the long awaited finale of our conversation with Chad Bornholt and Chad High from the Texas Tolkien Talk Podcast! Kyle and Dan finish reading through The Lord of the Rings with subscribers of The Babylon Bee and discuss the chapters of The Scouring of the Shire and The Grey Havens. The hobbits are back in town and they mean business. How did the Shire turn into North Korea and what can four little hobbits do about it? How did Sam turn into Johnny Appleseed? Will Frodo ever be healed and whole? What Lord of the Rings board games must you try? Tune in as The Bee Reads LOTR sails off into the west with its final “fantastic.” Kyle and Dan wish to thank Jonathan Watson and Michael Grumbine for being most excellent hobbits, esteemed Tolkien nerds, and dear friends. Discussion of The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King [Extended Edition] in Glorious 4K! This finale is so operatic and meticulous that the occasional flaws really stand out. This film's editorial work masterfully expands on the book by integrating the scattered storylines to create powerful new echoes and parallels between our characters' movements. The violence is ratcheted up to such an abstract, visceral degree that it can only be described as "crunchy" - there is a visceral horror here that not many films successfully capture. But with those achievements, there comes a stark failing: the absence of The Scouring of the Shire and piecemeal undoing of The Grey Havens. The film seems to aggressively alter Tolkien's message about "home" and growing up, while taking pains to keep the hobbits from maturing and proving themselves. It all culminates with a strange, Frankenstein-ed rendition of the Grey Havens where Frodo's departure seems not only confusing, but - somehow - absolutely unnecessary. We break it all down with great aplomb and Cam goes on a passionate rant about ginger snaps. Christopher Tolkien is back with the fourth volume of his History of the Lord of the Rings, Sauron Defeated. We discuss the unused epilogue starring a middle-aged Sam updating his daughter on the futures of some beloved characters - and then he gives the most heartbreaking monologue about "Mr. Frodo" that you could possibly imagine. We also get some revelations about the magic cancer than afflicts some of JRRT's most important characters, an outline about Gandalf's possible return to the Shire before the Grey Havens chapter, the original leader of the Scouring of the Shire rebellion, and a tantalizing hint about the Black Riders' role during the Mount Doom climax. We also read through some fantastic listener feedback. Join the conversation as we wrap up our Tolkien coverage and prepare to dive into the world of The Witcher! Well this one is an emotional rollercoaster - the last Tolkien chapter has arrived, and we finally get a peek behind the curtain! Tolkien gives us a glimpse of Middle-earth's heaven and much more information about the strange magical cancer that awaits everyone who spends too much time with a magical object. Then Sam takes his place as the new historian / protagonist / leader of the Grey Company, the story begins anew, and we finally know the ending of The Lord of the Rings. Join us next week as we begin to discuss the Return of the King movie and our last installment of Christopher Tolkien's History of LOTR. "What's this? A Ranger, caught off his guard?" Today it's just the OG's, and we're covering the Flight to the Fords sequence in 1:14:44-1:24:00 of The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition). Frodo's feeling a little woozy, so our favorite she-elf tries to take him on a quick horse ride to the nearest pharmacy when they are interrupted by nine Black Riders. This may be a short sequence, but there's a lot to unpack. Be sure to stick around for the Grey Havens. We made a discovery that fans of Tolkien (and Nickel Creek) are sure to enjoy. The Grey Havens -- The Shire's brief police state overthrown, the Hobbits rebuild the villages of the region. Sam opens the box Galadriel gave him and finds a small silver seed, which he plants. In the Party Field, a sacred tree springs up to replace the old one. Many children are born that year. Merry and Pippin become heroes in the Shire, but Frodo quietly retires. That spring, Sam marries Rosie Cotton, Farmer Cotton's daughter, and they live at Bag End with Frodo. Frodo decides to travel to Rivendell to see Bilbo. Frodo entrusts to Sam a history of the War, written in part by Bilbo. Frodo, Sam, and others set out. As they enter the Woody End, they meet Elrond and Galadriel, who now wear two of the Three Elven Rings. Riding slowly behind the two elves is Bilbo himself. Sam and Frodo accompany the travelers to the Great Sea. When they reach the gates of the Grey Havens, they find Gandalf waiting for them. Beyond him is a great white ship, ready to sail to the West across the sea. Pippin and Merry appear, wishing to be present at Frodo's departure. Frodo sadly bids farewell to his three friends and boards the ship. Gandalf entreats the three hobbits to enjoy each other's friendship as they quietly return to the Shire. Sam enters his warm home, where he finds Rosie waiting. She puts their young daughter, Elanor, in his lap, and Sam draws a deep breath and says, “Well, I'm back.”
This is the final episode covering the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Jared and James sit down and dissect the final book in the trilogy; The Return of the King. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we did reading/talking about it. This is a spoiler warning as we will be talking about some parts of the movies and the entire book trilogy in totality. Oh and bear with us if you are a hardcore LOTR's fan. This is Jared's first time reading, and James has only read them once so they are going to get some things incorrect when it comes to the LOTR world and canon. We apologize for any inaccuracies as we slog through some of the book lore. Questions asked in the conversation. 1. In your experience, what are we told to do with to do with loss and grief today? What are the lies about loss and grief to which we need to speak the truth? 2. How has your view of and relationship with God changed, or could even say, deepened, since experiencing such loss and grief? 3. If grief is a journey, what does a healthy journey look like? 4. What would you say to someone sitting in the darkness of grief right now? Tuor and Idril allow the group access to the mystical fountain in the Tower of Pearl. According to Ossë, this fountain is one of the only things near Eressëa that can transport the group to the Stone of the Hapless, burial place of Túrin Turambar. Anguirel, Feredir's sword, has been seeking this place since the Battle of the Grey Havens.
It’s our last chapter-based episode! Our discussion addresses some old themes in a new light: history as a sequence of interlocking stories (exemplified by the many crossed-out titles in the in-world Lord of the Rings manuscript); and the impossibility of true recovery from some wounds. Besides Frodo’s, we also consider Sam’s recovery following the trauma […]

After the the Umbarians have fled and the portal to the Lonely Isle has closed there is still much to do at the Grey Havens. Gildor Inglorion and Círdan the Shipwright explain that Raiken has passed unto the west, and that there were some corsairs that passed with him having the presence of the shadow maiar with them. They fear for the Master Palantir, in Avallónë, and for what they believe to be the beginning of the Dagor Dagorath (The Final Battle).
The Battle at the Wild Waves was fought at the Grey Havens in 2954 when the Umbarian corsairs besiege Cîrdan and his kin. The Nos Glanadur arrive, mid-battle, just as the Shadow appears to threaten everything both east and west of the Belegaer.
The heroes travel from the Old Forest, over the Brandywine Bridge into the Shire, and on to Tower Hills. There they pick up the Horn of Thorondor to aid them in their upcoming battle at the Grey Havens.
It's the last Book Club...and the last episode of The Grey Company! Dan, Derek, Ian, and Matthew share their thoughts on Homeward Bound, The Scouring of the Shire, and The Grey Havens, then give a tearful farewell.
There are tales of Middle-earth from times long before The Lord of the Rings. The story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West: lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World. In that remote time, Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in the vast fortress of Angband, the Hells of Iron, in the North; and the tragedy of Túrin and his sister Nienor unfolded within the shadow of the fear of Angband and the war waged by Morgoth against the lands and secret cities of the Elves. Their brief and passionate lives were dominated by the elemental hatred that Morgoth bore them as the children of Húrin, the man who had dared to defy and to scorn him to his face. Against them he sent his most formidable servant, Glaurung, a powerful spirit in the form of a huge wingless dragon of fire. Into this story of brutal conquest and flight, of forest hiding-places and pursuit, of resistance with lessening hope, the Dark Lord and the Dragon enter in direly articulate form. Sardonic and mocking, Glaurung manipulated the fates of Túrin and Nienor by lies of diabolic cunning and guile, and the curse of Morgoth was fulfilled. The earliest versions of this Tolkien story go back to the end of the First World War and the years that followed. But long afterwards, when The Lord of the Rings was finished, he revised and greatly enlarged it, enhancing complexities of motive and character. It became the dominant story in his later work on Middle-earth. But he could not bring it to a final and finished form. In this book, Christopher Tolkien has constructed, after long study of the manuscripts, a coherent narrative without any editorial invention.

In this continuation of our conversation about the stewards of Gondor, we talk about Denethor using the palantír, Sauron using the palantír, and the different military situations in Osgiliath and Ithilien. Episode Timeline 1:00 Where did he get a palantír anyway? 1:20 Fëanor. Kind of the worst IMHO. 1:45 Elendil took 3 palantíri to the north kingdom. One is with Círdan in the Grey Havens, one at 2:25 Amon Sûl (Weathertop), one at Annûminias (capital of the north kingdom). Isildur and Anárion each had 2. One at Minas Ithil (Minas Morgul), one at Osgiliath, one at Orthanc, and one at Minas Anor (Minas Tirith). 3:11 Wormtongue throws one at Gandalf. 3:35 Pippin and Aragorn both look into it. 4:07 Effort of will. - How palantír work. 4:19 Belle’s mirror 4:48 Point your palantír in the direction you want to look! 5:20 Palantír stuff is in Unfinished Tales. 5:45 Mental effort to focus: UT p 403 6:13 Light-related stuff with Fëanor. 6:30 Stewards mostly didn’t use it. 6:44 Sauron used his powers of fear and domination to pull the gaze of the other palantír. 7:09 Sauron turned Saruman through a palantír, but not Denethor. Saruman wasn’t being controlled by Sauron, but he wasn’t very helpful. 7:50 Saruman was trying to play both sides and failed. 8:15 Denethor could use his palantír by right, but it wasn’t a very good idea. 8:28 Technically, they all belong to Aragorn, but the stewards held power in place of the kings so the right to use it belonged to Denethor as well. 9:28 Some of the people of Minas Tirith were Nûmenórian, but not all Gondorians are. The line of Eӓrendil is part elvish, but not all Nûmenórians were descendants of Eӓrendil. 10:17 Denethor was using the palantír to get the information he needed to fight the war. 10:44 He continued to use it even though it was a huge mental strain and aged him prematurely. 11:05 Sauron was drawing palantír to him but Denethor could turn it away. That’s a huge deal. 11:20 Denethor was taking really big risks because he needed the information. This was the only way to do it, even though he knew it could destroy him. 11:30 Dan talks a little about how military intelligence works. Tolkien would have known about that and it was a subtle and interesting way to use that knowledge in the book. 13:20 Scene of Denethor eating is SO AWFUL and UNCOMFORTABLE. It’s supposed to be. 14:10 Shoutout to Billy Boyd. Wow! 14:55 Denethor had ONE JOB! 15:28 Hey Aragorn, what have you done lately? 15:50 He was hiding up north while Denethor was risking himself using the palantír and sending his sons to die. 17:03 In Rohan (Norse) the aristocracy earned honor in battle, so they were out in the front of battle. Gondorian culture is different. 17:50 Aragorn is out in front, like at the Black Gate where he’s all later, haters! 18:57 In Osgiliath, it’s whatever fight you can make it. 19:10 Boromir is a cavalier, Faramir is a ranger. Ithilien requires stealth. 19:34 Gondor CIA? 20:00 The brief geography of Mordor/Osgiliath/Gondor. 20:57 Erica doesn’t want to get into the Kinstrife right now. Maybe another time! The Nicks take a close look at the goings on of Middle-earth, the Council is called at a time when all the free folks happen to be represented, the tale of The Ring is told and the larger picture is starting to become clear to those present that now is the time of action, there is a chance NOW to strike against the enemy. The Nicks discuss favorite musical themes from the films, the motions of Gandalf throughout Middle-earth and the hunting of Gollum in Chapter 2 of The Lord of The Rings. This is part 2 of this discussion - in the first part we discussed the chapter from Frodo's point of view. Click to go back to that discussion. Maps Map of Middle-earth LoTRproject.com interactive map - Caution: spoilers for new readers! If you had to pick one musical theme from the films as your favorite, which would it be? Nicholas Jon's pick - The Charge of the Rohirrim - the fully developed and orchestrated version of the Rohirrim theme. Nick Andrew's pick - The Grey Havens - The final version of the Grey Havens theme An orchestrated version of Into The West. The melody/vocal line is played on the cello. Fellowship Reunited - the fully formed and matured Shire theme first heard in Concerning Hobbits. Last time in The Lord of The Rings Last episode we spoke about Frodo, and how he experienced the chapter as Gandalf laid an almighty hammer blow of scariness. The Dark Lord Sauron is looking for The Ring, and he now knows about the Shire and the name Baggins. Where are we in the narrative? Through dangers untold, and hardships unnumbered, Gandalf has traveled many paths to find the secrets of the Ring that Frodo has inherited. He returns to the Shire to find that, so far, all is well. But danger is closer than Frodo ever thought - it is in his pocket. Gandalf tells his story of how he pieced together the puzzle of the One Ring and how it came to Gollum and thus to Bilbo. Listen Up! Can I kick it? For the sake of brevity, I'm going to assume you replied "yes, you can!" Because it's Revengecast season 2 episode 22: Truth (part 2), the long-awaited Season Finalé, and we've got less than no time to waste! Events Are Happening! Such as: Jack putting a heartbreaking end to all of his friendships--fast or otherwise--and smashing his cellphone 'neath his hoary old boot to assume the mantle of Stealth Jack in order to infiltrate the highest & deepest echelons of the Conrad Grayson Gubernatorial Security Apparatus. Why? Because that asshole tried to kill him! Or wait, right now we think it's Ashley what did that, but (bearing in mind the title of this episode), I have a feeling that lie won't linger longly. Especially not after Ashley points out a Logical Fallacy in Jack's Emotiona-Driven Emoji Argument via the unremitting iron gavel of the Jashley Investigations Charter. Looks like there's no room to "Jash" It Out on this one, Jack-o! Emily is freaking out! Danny is freaking out (and punching people!) Aiden is on a somewhat uncharacteristically even keel, but don't worry about it because Nolan is picking up the slack by writhing on his fainting couch, sobbing hot tears of worry and clinging to his body pillow (an I, My, Me Strawberry Eggs dakimakura, natch) while the world turns to shit around him. Victoria's freaking out! Conrad's freaking out about Victoria's freak out (while standing gubernatorially on top of a car in the middle of Neo-Ground Zero) and, finally, finally, finally the true TRUTH of the Initiative is revealed in a way which might surprise you. (if you haven't been paying attention) Briefly, we devote some thought to Why Did We Have To Leave England WHERE WE AT LEAST WE HAD SOME G-D WINDOWS?? But enough about that!! The catastrophic moments that change everyones lives aren't about to let up, no matter how much Conrad won't shut up about the chopter, and so, neither can we! As the winding and weaving events of this season draw a bead on the climax quick as a lazy-eyed sniper, Maple, the golden retriever with a heart of gold (and a nose to match!) briefly ignores her whelming love of beavers, badgers, and all other aquatic mammals and/or rodents to foil Aiden's escape plans at the Canadian border (HI!), Declan, eddied about by the aftershocks of a desk that kinda fell on him, reassures Chocolate that they will definitely be the Best Teen Moms Ever while secretly planning a long convalescence in the Grey Havens (the dust got him all sniffly!), Stealth Jack dons his greatest disguise yet (y'know, of the two featured in this episode) and struggles to overcome his (possible) Manchurian Candidate conditioning, Victoria receives a strange and [expected] unexpected Thing on her Doorstep, Nolan's heart is shattered into a million-billion pieces as he finds himself posthumously betrayed by the only woman he ever loved, Conrad just grins a lot (jerk!), and Emily finally lays her bare soul as things ultimately come to an ultimate head in what we can definitely declare is definitely a season finale of a second season of a TV show called Revenge! *BAM BAM BAM BAAAAAAAM* Topics for Consideration: Illegal Greenland Anime Server/Bug-Out Bag You Can Reach Me Through My Nolan Slim Phillip: The Terror of Midtown Retcon(rad grayon)s Neil deGrasse Tyson — The Martyr We Created, The Hero We Deserve Ashley: Cyberpunk CEO to the Stars. Derek, Dan, and Ian set sail with The Grey Havens expansion, digging into the quests and player cards of this newest deluxe box. We also answer a ton of listener questions about The Grey Havens. Please forgive the audio disruption at the very beginning, it resolves within the first couple of minutes.
Download MP3 audio – 11:40, 13.83 MB – or Read Transcript Radio address for December 14, 2013. We tend to place a bit of our power into things: trees, books, jewels, bullets and hats. Lose one of these talismans, and you are put to a world of trouble to get it back again. I never really thought I’d write about the experience of losing my wedding ring, but the time seems to have come when I can talk about it reasonably. Not long after it happened, encouraged by stories such as this one, I tried posting on some treasure hunting boards, and a couple of people said they’d look but ultimately I never heard back. The second loss (not talked about in the audio): As mentioned at the tail end of the episode, there was another time when I actually lost my second ring too: it went missing for a few months. One day my mom shows up at my door with the ring: it had been found under their piano, looking like this: The jeweler was able to restore it to its original condition, and in the process reduce it by a half size, making it a little less likely that I’ll ever have to live through this again. This address’s extremely appropriate and well-placed music cues are: The Blue World from Lady in the Water by James Newton Howard Wow, from Finding Nemo, by Thomas Neumann Treasure, from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy by Alberto Inglesias — “…those wanings of power, which are the inevitable result of old age…” …blended seamlessly into One Ring to Rule Them All, from Fellowship Of The Ring, by Howard Shore and ending with The Grey Havens, also by Howard Shore, from The Return of the King
