Radio Emission of Nearby Early-type Galaxies at Low and Very-Low Radio Luminosity Range by Anna Wójtowicz et al. on Wednesday 23 November We analyze radio continuum emission of early-type galaxies with dynamical measurements of central super-massive black hole (SMBH) masses, and well-characterized large-scale environments, but regardless on the exact level of the nuclear activity. The 1.4,GHz radio fluxes collected with $sim$arcmin resolution for 62 nearby targets (distances $lesssim 153$ Mpc), correspond to low and very low monochromatic luminosities $L_{rm r} sim 10^{35} - 10^{41}$,erg,s$^{-1}$. We quantify possible correlations between the radio properties with the main parameters of supermassive black holes, host galaxies, and hot gaseous halos, finding a general bimodality in the radio luminosity distribution, with the borderline between ``radio-bright'' and ``radio-dim'' populations $log L_{rm r} / L_{rm Edd} simeq -8.5$. We analyze the far-infrared data for the targets, finding that all radio-bright sources, and over a half of radio-dim ones, are over-luminous in radio with respect to the far-infrared--radio correlation. High-resolution radio maps reveal that the overwhelming majority of radio-dim sources are unresolved on arcsecond scale, while the bulk of radio-bright sources display extended jets and lobes of low- and intermediate-power radio galaxies; those jets dominate radio emission of radio-bright objects. Regarding the origin of the radio emission of radio-dim sources, we discuss the two main possibilities. One is the ADAF model, in which the radio and the nuclear X-ray radiative outputs at very low accretion rates, are both dominated by unresolved jets. The other possibility is that the radio-dim sources, unlike the radio-bright ones, are characterized by low values of SMBH spins, so that their radio emission is not related to the jets, but instead is due to a combination of starforming processes and past nuclear outbursts. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.14638v2

He published three collections of poetry and ten novels. In 2014 Adaf appeared on The Guardian’s list of best science fiction for 2013, alongside Stephen King and Margaret Atwood. And in 2013, at the launch of the British edition of Sunburnt Faces, he joined the British writer Neil Gaiman on a panel at a World Fantasy Convention. In this conversation we spoke with Adaf about the practice of speculative thinking, what we can learn from Science Fiction, how can one practice futuristic thinking, and much more. This episode was recorded in Google For Startups Creator Studios Tel-Aviv.Click to see the episode's show notes, recommendations, and other links.

Last week we heard the first part of this two-part podcast featuring Shimon Adaf in his and Lavie Tidhar’s 2016 multigenre collaboration Art & War: Poetry, Pulp and Politics in Israeli Fiction. This week we feature Lavie Tidhar. The book is a dialogue about Adaf and Tidhar's approach to writing the fantastic, writing about Israel and Palestine, about Judaism, about the Holocaust, about childhoods and their end. What is especially exciting is that this book extends the conversation even into their own fiction--and the book ends with two new short stories – Tutim by Tidhar, and Third Attribute by Adaf – in which each appears as a character in the other’s tale. Text: Tidhar, Lavie & Shimon Adaf. Art & War: Poetry, Pulp and Politics in Israeli Fiction. Repeater Press, 2016.

In this podcast - the second episode in African Tech Roundup's (https://africantechroundup.com) three-part miniseries on digital assets (http://bit.ly/atrudigitalassets) - Andile Masuku chats with two gifted distributed ledger proponents who are co-architects of the African Digital Assets Framework - ADAF (http://adaf.io). ADAF is the first open-source software platform to create transnational standards for digital assets and distributed ledger technologies— in line with pan-African development objectives. ADAF intends to complement the African Union’s Single Africa Digital Market initiative, which seeks to leverage technology to stimulate digitised pan-African economic integration. Andile's first podcast guest is Felix Macharia, a Kenyan senior medical student who is the co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of EOS Nairobi— where he leads product development and decentralised protocol research. Felix is also an affiliate scholar with the Institute for Blockchain Studies in New York. Also on the show is the Bahamian technology and securities lawyer-turned-founder and CEO of Raise, Marvin Coleby. Marvin is a published researcher specialising in regional trade financing and international investment arbitration, and also serves as an advisor to the Africa Blockchain Alliance and the Agentic Group, alongside advising partners such as Coindesk, MIT and IBM. Listen in to broaden your understanding of what constitutes a digital asset and learn why adopting a pragmatic Pan-African framework for dealing with digital assets might well be in the world's best interests. This podcast is the first instalment of a three-part miniseries (http://bit.ly/atrudigitalassets) produced by African Tech Roundup (https://africantechroundup.com) to spark a broader debate about the nature and value of African digital assets within the context of the world’s emerging digital economy. Joining Andile Masuku for this conversation are two distinguished Cape Town-based innovators. First, the Zimbabwean-born Professor of Intellectual Property at the University of Cape Town’s Faculty of Law and co-editor of the South African Intellectual Property Law Journal, Caroline Ncube. Caroline has authored a book called Intellectual Property Policy, Law and Administration in Africa: Exploring continental and sub-regional co-operation and co-edited another called Indigenous Knowledge and Intellectual Property. She is also a fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth Society, a Shell Centenary Scholarship Fund scholar, an associate member of the Centre for Law, Technology and Society at the University of Ottawa and a co-leader of the Open African Innovation Research Partnership. Also featured in this episode is Saidah Nash Carter, the African-American intrapraneur who serves as Head of Innovation at Thomson Reuters Africa. While at Reuters NewMedia, early on in her career, Saidah helped to build and launch some of the first online news services for early internet sensations like Yahoo! and AOL. Today, however, she heads up one of the seven innovation labs Thomson now runs globally (now branded Refinitiv Labs)— the only one so far based in an emerging market. Some notable successes in her current role include overseeing Thomson Reuters’ Africa Startup Challenge and getting her team’s agrotech financial inclusion initiative, dubbed Bankable Farmer, off the ground. Listen in to gain a better appreciation of the historical approaches to dealing with intellectual property, in particular, as Africa undertakes to construct legal frameworks and set standards for the use of digital assets— that is, to figure out how to go about administering their creation, registering their ownership, determining their value, and regulating their exchange. Shimon Adaf's poem 'Sderot' begins: It took me twenty years to lovethis hole in the middle of nowhere. The cotton buds dispersed in a white flameand the wind meddled in the cypresses... Born in Sderot, the 'bomb shelter capital of the world,' to parents of Moroccan origin, Shimon Adaf has written five novels and three collections of poetry, which have received numerous national prizes. He lectures on Hebrew literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and is head of the Hebrew-language creative writing program there. Host Marcela Sulak reads from Adaf's 'Ars Poetica,' which deals with his Moroccan origins, and 'Evening Prayer,' which is rooted in the memory of his religious upbringing. Adaf also sings, writes songs, and plays music with the band Ha’Atzulah - we hear some of his work during the podcast.   Text: Kaleidoscope: Three Poets from Israel.
