Designing the Future of Law: Inside Faegre Drinker's Legal Design Lab Relaunch

This week, we talk with a team of innovation leaders from the law firm Faegre Drinker. The guests included Shawn Swearingen, Chief Innovation Officer; David Gross, Design Lab co-founder; and Ruben Gonzalez, Design Lab Director. The discussion centered around the relaunch of Faegre Drinker's Legal Design Lab in Scottsdale, Arizona, exploring its origins, evolution, and impact on legal problem-solving. The Legal Design Lab's inception traces back eight or nine years when an associate at the firm, Helen Chacon, reconnected with her Stanford Law School friend Margaret Hagan, who was pioneering the concept of legal design. Intrigued by the idea of applying design thinking—a user-focused, empathetic approach to problem-solving long used in other industries—to the legal field, the firm embarked on a deep dive into the methodology. This included David (DJ) Gross auditing courses at Stanford's D-School and team members like Kate Rozavi designing courses on visual advocacy at the University of Minnesota Law School. The relaunch and relocation of the Design Lab to Scottsdale were influenced by several factors, notably the firm's merger that expanded its geographic footprint and the practical considerations brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The move allowed the firm to acquire a significantly larger and more cost-effective space. With input from architects, designers, and Margaret Hagan herself, the new lab was designed to be a flexible, creative environment featuring movable furniture and an industrial aesthetic, fostering collaboration and innovation. Throughout the podcast, the team shared concrete examples of how design thinking has been instrumental in solving complex legal challenges. One such example involved simplifying a profitability tool for lawyers by using a color-coded system akin to credit score reports, making it more accessible and actionable. Another highlighted the use of tennis balls to demystify crystallography during a jury trial, showcasing how visual aids and empathetic explanations can lead to successful outcomes. These instances underscore the lab's focus on user-centric solutions and visual advocacy to enhance understanding and efficiency in legal processes. The guests also discussed the challenges of integrating design thinking within the traditional legal framework, particularly in encouraging open-mindedness and collaborative participation among lawyers and clients. They emphasized the importance of a learning mindset, active listening, and the willingness to embrace creativity and risk-taking. To further disseminate these ideas, the team mentioned an eBook available on their website, aimed at introducing legal professionals to design thinking and visual advocacy concepts. A mind-blowing explanation of symmetry | Frank Wilczek for Big Think

Dr. Frank Wilczek is the newly announced recipient of the 2022 Templeton Prize, which, valued at over $1.4 million, is one of the world's largest annual individual awards. Dr. Wilczek is celebrated for his investigations into the fundamental laws of nature that have transformed our understanding of the forces that govern our universe. In this video, Dr. Wilczek explores the question, ‘does the world embody beautiful ideas?' through science and humankind's relationship to (and love for) symmetry. "We can look at the record of what people have found beautiful, what they were hoping for in their understanding of the world with what the remarkable understanding of the world we've achieved in recent years looks like. And we can therefore frame a meaningful discussion and a meaningful question, a meaningful meditation, on the issue.” The Templeton Prize was established by the late global investor and philanthropist Sir John Templeton. It is given to honor those who harness the power of the sciences to explore the deepest questions of the universe and humankind's place and purpose within it. -------------------------------------------------------------- About Frank Wilczek: Frank Wilczek is an American theoretical physicist, mathematician and a Nobel laureate. He is currently the Herman Feshbach Professor of Physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Wilczek, along with David Gross and H. David Politzer, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2004 for their discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Future of Life Institute. His new book is titled A Beautiful Question: Finding Nature's Deep Design. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About The Well Do we inhabit a multiverse? Do we have free will? What is love? Is evolution directional? There are no simple answers to life's biggest questions, and that's why they're the questions occupying the world's brightest minds. So what do they think? How is the power of science advancing understanding? How are philosophers and theologians tackling these fascinating questions? Let's dive into The Well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

I have had the privilege of working closely with Frank Wilczek for over 40 years, on and off, and we have written perhaps a dozen scientific papers together over that time. Our collaborations together were always a source of joy, and often of wonder, and I am pleased to say that a number of them had significant impact on our fields of study. While I have had the privilege of working with many talented scientists during my career, Frank is unique. He is one of the most broadly read, deep, and creative scientists I have known. To first approximation, he has read everything in science, and one of the characteristics of our own collaborations that has been so much fun is entering an entirely new field of study and learning how much is known about it, and how that knowledge might be used in new contexts. Frank is likely the most significant theoretical physicist of my generation, and along with Ed Witten, perhaps the intellectually most gifted. That he won the Nobel Prize for work performed as a graduate student with David Gross to develop the theory of one of the four known forces in nature is notable, but it just scratches the surface of his interests and accomplishments. While Frank and I have appeared onstage together on numerous occasions, I was waiting for the opportunity to sit down with him for an extended period to discuss his life in science, and the areas of study that reflect the most significant developments of recent times, and the outstanding challenges in our field. It was a pleasure to be able to do so for this podcast. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and that it inspires your interest in the world around us. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Redirecting one's own taxes as an effective altruism method, published by David Gross on November 13, 2023 on LessWrong. About twenty years ago, I stopped paying U.S. federal income taxes. By law, the government has ten years to collect an unpaid tax bill, whereafter a sort of statute of limitations kicks in and the bill becomes permanently noncollectable. I've adopted the practice of waiting out this ten-year period and then donating the amount of the uncollected tax to charity, typically the Top Charities Fund organized by GiveWell. Over the past six years I've redirected over $30,000 from the U.S. Treasury to charity in this way. In this post I'll briefly outline the theory and practice of this sort of tax redirection, and address some likely objections. If you have questions about the nitty-gritty details, leave them in the comments or drop me a line by email. Theory From an effective altruism perspective, the theory behind tax redirection is that giving money to the government is far from the best way you could deploy that money. It is questionable whether funding the government is even a net positive: worse than merely wasteful and inefficient, the government is often harmful. But even if you believe that marginal funding of the government is more good than bad, it is almost certainly not among the best ways you could allocate your money. So if you could avoid paying federal taxes and give that money instead to more well-chosen causes, in a frictionless way, it would seem wise to do so (from an effective altruism standpoint). But of course such a move is not frictionless: the government disincentivizes some varieties of tax redirection with threats of sanctions, and other varieties of tax redirection have their own costs. So you have to factor in those costs before you can decide if tax redirection would be a good option for you. But to many people, tax redirection is in the "unthinkable" category, and so they dismiss the option before actually weighing the costs and benefits. If you have been among these people, I hope this post will encourage you to move tax redirection from "unthinkable" to "let me think about that for a moment." The theory and practice of tax redirection in the U.S. has been developed largely by pacifist "war tax resisters", who redirect their federal taxes because of conscientious objection to funding war.[1] Their belief that funding the government is indeed immoral led them to desperately seek alternatives. But those alternatives, having been developed and deployed to varying degrees of success, are worth considering even by those whose values do not include pacifist scruples: for those who merely consider government funding to be suboptimal. Practice There are two main families of tax refusal strategies, each of which has numerous variants:[2] In the first family, practitioners owe taxes to the government but neglect to pay them. In the second, practitioners organize their affairs in such a way that they do not owe the taxes to begin with. I don't intend to explain these strategies in detail here, but I'll give a bird's-eye view of the strategy landscape. This is based on how tax redirection is practiced in the modern U.S., where the national government mainly relies on income-based taxation (rather than, say, a value-added tax or customs duties). Other countries (and historical periods) have their own sets of strategies. Refusing to pay taxes you owe There are a few ways to refuse to pay an income-based tax. One is to arrange one's affairs such that one is personally responsible for paying the tax (so it isn't automatically taken from one's paycheck), and then to simply not write the check when the bill comes due. Another is to earn one's income in such a way that the income does not come to the attention of the government (e.g. in the...

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA)—which serves as the President's principal advisor on telecommunications and information policy issues and the nation's manager of federally-allocated radiofrequency spectrum, among other responsibilities—must balance several critical priorities at a key moment for American progress in telecommunications and technology. In this episode of Wiley Connected, Amb. David Gross and Sara Baxenberg of Wiley's Telecom, Media & Technology Practice, along with Wiley summer law clerk Stephanie Rigizadeh, speak with NTIA Administrator Alan Davidson about the issues and opportunities facing the agency. The conversation spans several areas of focus at NTIA, including: •The “Internet for All” initiative, which seeks to leverage $45 billion in grant funding allocated by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to bring high-speed, affordable internet access to all Americans; •The Administration's efforts on telecommunications issues abroad, including the candidacy of Doreen Bogdan-Martin for Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and upcoming ITU conferences; •NTIA's collaboration with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on spectrum management issues; and •NTIA's role in shaping policy on personal privacy.

April 15, 2022 — Around late March as I drove into Mendocino Village, I saw a new sight: two of the biggest flags in rich brilliant color, dancing in the strong wind. Flags in the town of Mendocino are normal for the music festival, art events, to direct to one of the many weddings that the rustic and charming backdrop of Mendocino plays host to. This pair struck an immediate chord with this journalist, however, when I realized the significance of their colors: one yellow, one blue, side by side. As I kept driving, I saw several more. Today there are literally dozens of pairs all around town. You really cannot miss them if you drive or walk around the town of Mendocino. I have been curious about their sudden appearance and apparent ability to multiply. So I talked with the person behind the idea for the flags around town, local resident David Gross. We met at the Rotary Park in Mendocino, on the corner of Main and Lansing Streets on a sunny early morning with birds chirping in the background and the air warming us as we sat at a comfortable well worn picnic table.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Review: Václav Havel's “The Power of the Powerless”, published by David Gross on February 21, 2022 on LessWrong. In which I review Václav Havel's essay on “The Power of the Powerless” before Scott Alexander totally steals my thunder. Václav Havel's The Power of the Powerless is fascinating and surprising. The purpose of this review is to summarize it in such a tantalizing (and lengthy) way that you stop reading this and go look up Havel's original instead. Its context is Czechoslovakia in 1978. The country has been behind the Iron Curtain for thirty years, and ten years have passed since the brief experiment in political liberalization known as the “Prague Spring” which had been quickly choked off by a Soviet-led invasion. Havel was a Czech playwright with international renown, whose works were banned in his own country. In 1977 he helped to spearhead “Charter 77”—a document that called on the government to respect human rights and its own Constitution. Charter 77 was prompted by the prosecution of members of the rock band “The Plastic People of the Universe”—the “Pussy Riot” of their day. The government took the threat represented by the Charter seriously—it persecuted its signers and made it illegal to print or distribute the text. In 1979, Havel would be sent to prison for four years for his role in advocating for the Charter. While Havel wrote The Power of the Powerless, he was under constant police surveillance and harassment for his Charter 77 activism. Meanwhile he was being noticed by freedom-loving people around the world and being hailed as a prominent Soviet-bloc dissident. The “Post-Totalitarian” System He begins his argument by examining the system the “dissidents” are up against. It's a strange new form of tyranny—a dictatorship not by a person or people, but by a bureaucracy and by certain principles and external contingencies (the primary one being that the Soviet Union intends to maintain Czechoslovakia as an obedient client state). So this is not the sort of dictatorship that can be threatened by attacks on a particular person or clique. Havel refers to this system as “post-totalitarian” (at least in the translation I read). This is confusing, as it seems at first to imply that it is no longer totalitarian, which isn't the case. “Neototalitarian” might have been more apt. Czechoslovakia (and the Soviet Union and its client states collectively) was ruled in part by an ideology—almost a religion—that had proven to be a tempting refuge for confused, uprooted, and alienated people. “Of course, one pays dearly for this low-rent home: the price is abdication of one's own reason, conscience, and responsibility, for an essential aspect of this ideology is the consignment of reason and conscience to a higher authority. The principle involved here is that the center of power is identical with the center of truth.” He anticipates the argument that though this ideology is dominant and everpresent, few people really believe its platitudes. They're like schoolchildren reciting the Pledge of Allegiance without paying attention to the words because it's what is expected of them. To meet this argument Havel introduces us to a grocer: The Obedient Grocer In the window of the grocery is a sign that reads “Workers of the world, unite!” What does the grocer mean by putting this sign in the window? Not that he is enthusiastic about global worker unity and wants to spread the word about it. The real message on the sign reads something like this: “I, the grocer X⸺, live here and I know what I must do. I behave in the manner expected of me. I can be depended upon and am beyond reproach. I am obedient and therefore I have the right to be left in peace.” The message is not meant for the grocer's customers, but for officials who might suspect him or for informers who might car...

Frank Wilczek is a physics professor at MIT, Arizona State University, and Stockholm University. He won the 2004 Nobel Prize in Physics, along with David Gross and H. David Politzer, “for the discovery of asymptotic freedom in the theory of the strong interaction.” The work, which revolutionized quantum physics, was conducted thirty-one years prior, when Wilczek was a graduate student at Princeton. He has been awarded a MacArthur Fellowship and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has writ- ten multiple books, including A Beautiful Question: Finding Nature's Deep Design and Fundamentals: Ten Keys to Reality. We tend to respect things in other people that we either can't see in ourselves or see in ourselves but don't live up to. This is probably why I so admire Frank Wilczek's endurance and forbearance. Those qualities are incredibly rare in a scientist and are ones I struggle with personally. He had this almost stoic patience, to wait thirty-one years for recognition, knowing all the while that he would likely win the Nobel Prize, but not receiving it. He exhibited incredible grit and resiliency. And he never lost his cheerfulness! Throughout those years, he committed to the process, dedicated himself to his craft, and kept showing up, understanding that the award is not the final arbiter of success or even satisfaction. I've learned more from him about patience and determination even than I have about the inner workings of protons and quarks.  Available on Amazon: Think Like a Nobel Prize Winner  About Professor Brian Keating: https://www.youtube.com/drbriankeating Podcast in iTunes https://simonsobservatory.org/ https://briankeating.com/ https://bkeating.physics.ucsd.edu/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/drbriankeating/
