Adam Krikorian: Building and Leading Winning Teams

On Episode Eighteen of Mindful Warrior Radio, I'm joined by Adam Krikorian, a three-time Olympic champion, the head coach of the U.S. women's national water polo team, and former head coach of the men's and women's water polo teams at UCLA. In this episode, Adam focuses on bringing out the best in others—in athletes and coaches, alike—and describes the process of achieving and sustaining performance excellence at the highest level of sport. In short, winning is what Adam knows how to do. In his 17 years as a player and coach at UCLA, Adam won 15 national titles—11 as head coach, three as assistant coach, and one as a student-athlete. Now the head coach of the U.S. women's national team, Adam led the team to gold at the 2012, 2016, and 2020 Olympic games. Since being named head coach in 2009, Team USA has earned gold in 19 of its last 22 major international competitions (Olympic Games, FINA World Championships, FINA World Cups, and FINA World League Super Final Crowns). This is a remarkable 86% winning record! In this episode, our listeners will gain important insights into what it takes to build and lead a high trust, high performance team. They will see the wisdom of integrating a fierce competitive drive with humility and humor, and they will be inspired by Adam's commitment to lifelong learning.Adam and I explore the process of building and leading teams to achieve and sustain flow. Reflecting on his past experiences, Adam describes the role love plays in helping a team achieve flow. “When we are talking about a flow state in a team setting, you are adding so many layers and so many more dynamics to it. And I think the other thing that cannot be understated is if you want to try to get there, then there is so much love that has to be created within that group—there is so much unselfishness—that it's going to be difficult to find that flow state within the team setting if there isn't that love, respect, and trust that you have for one another. That's what makes team sports incredibly special.”We also discuss the importance of designing an environment to build a successful team. Adam highlights the value of consistency and discipline to create change and build team strength. “Pressure paralyzes. And when pressure is involved, bad habits blossom and they rear their ugly head. So, the environment we create in practice—and it can't be like this every day—but we need to find moments in our training where the team feels the pressure and has to deal with adversity because adversity always appears. It always shows up.”Purpose, people, and perspective are three key elements that help Adam navigate challenging and tedious times. Focusing on the larger “why” allows him to maintain focus. He says, “I need to go through all these baby steps: There is a reason to what we are doing. There is a purpose to what we are doing. The people that you are doing it with. Creating relationships through the journey…how important that is. Having the perspective. Knowing we are going through all of this—this monotonous stage—and that this is going to get us to this place. And it's not always about winning. It's about learning and growing. And understanding if you can have that perspective through the process, it can keep you dialed in and motivated.”If you enjoyed today's episode, please take the opportunity to share with a friend, follow Mindful Warrior Radio, and leave a review! To learn more about Mindful Warrior and Mindful Warrior Radio please follow us on Instagram @therealmindfulwarrior and check out our website at www.mindfulwarrior.com

“What can I do now? I personally am like, I can get faster, I can get stronger. I can get more intelligent, mentally I can get stronger. And  that's motivation within itself,  the opportunity to improve.” - Maggie SteffensToday's guest is Maggie Steffens, Captain of the U.S. Women's Olympic Water Polo team. Our conversation with Maggie was a blast. We touched on everything from how she handled the mental challenge created by the pandemic, her approach to showing up big in high pressure situations and the unique approach she takes with her teammates when it comes to leadership. Throughout our exploration of her mindset on these and so many other topics, the recurring theme that stood out to us was the need in life  to be adaptable. It's very clear that this is one of the key characteristics that has helped Maggie excel at such a high level in her sport for so many years. As you listen to our conversation, you'll discover a few tips you can apply to your life to be a little more adaptable. Show Notes(3:18) Where you can find Maggie and where training is taking place…(5:44) The impact of the 2020 Olympics being cancelled…(8?49) Taking advantage of the “opportunities” that Covid provided…(14:50) “We found other ways to test our bodies and test our minds, and stay active and kind of try to find creative ways to also stay connected through that as well.” Being creative and adaptive in training…(16:20) A last-second shot in 2017…(20:44) “I asked the three biggest girls and then the three strongest girls on our Stanford team to stay after practice for five minutes. This week’s conversation is with Women’s Senior National Team Water Polo head coach Adam Krikorian.Since taking over the Women's Senior National Team, Adam Krikorian has been just about perfect. From his arrival in 2009 Team USA has competed in 18 major FINA Championships and come away with Gold in 15. This includes the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, 2009, 2015, and 2017 FINA World Championships, the 2010 and 2014 FINA World Cups, seven FINA World League Super Final crowns and the 2016 Olympic Qualification Tournament. He's helped the United States maintain a number-one world ranking for the majority of his tenure.Following the 2016 Olympic Games, Krikorian was named Coach of the Games by the USOC at the Team USA Awards. And in early 2017, Krikorian was also honored by the Los Angeles Sports Council and the LA Sports Awards by receiving the first ever "Extraordinary Achievement In Olympic Sport" honors.Based on Adam’s impressive resume, you might expect Adam’s definition of success to align with winning, but this isn’t the case.In Adam’s first year coaching the national team, they won gold at the world championships yet Adam described it as one of his most frustrating and least satisfying moments as a coach because the culture and relationships weren’t right. For Adam, it’s not about selecting the best athletes but it’s about selecting the best team and there’s so many variables that go into that.Building great relationships is at the core of Adam’s coaching philosophy and in this conversation we learn about the factors that impact these relationships, how Adam goes about selecting players and creates an environment where people can be honest with others and themselves. We also discuss why Adam’s competitive fire, which has driven him his whole life, can be both a blessing and a curse. There is so much packed into this conversation – in Adam’s words, “Mastery is the journey of trying to become the best version of yourself.” And I hope this conversation helps you get a little bit further on your own journey. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens.Athletic Greens is the Most Complete Supplement for a better you. He would never 'fess up to it but after leading the USA women to their third consecutive gold medal (perhaps a fourth in Paris?) he can fairly be called "legendary." He's Adam Krikorian, one of the world's best at his craft if the collection of hardware tells us anything. The medals are important but in today's conversation we talk less about that and more about his future with the Olympic team, the struggles prior to winning gold in Tokyo, and some speculation on the future of college water polo. All that while touting the the massive talents of his athletes and deflecting his own role in what can fairly be described as perhaps the best Olympic team in the world.

Alys Williams was the final cut from the 2016 USA Women's National Water Polo Team, as NBC informed us just a few times during the Tokyo Olympics. Williams recovered from that setback quite nicely and now has a heavy, shiny 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medal to hang on her office wall.In a very revealing conversation she detailed the stress and nerves associated with being affiliated with one of the all-time great water polo programs, how it affects sleep, how it likely contributed to the team's "slow" start, and how Melissa Seidemann was there to help her (and others) overcome it.She also talks about what makes Adam Krikorian a now legendarily good coach, why Tony Azevedo is wrong about Ralph Lauren tie dye, and... retirement (or maybe better to call it, contentment).
