The tragedy of fixed ideas, beliefs and ideologies is that they leave no room for growth, no space for listening, and no pathway to a deeper consciousness. We hear so much about addictions to alcohol or drugs—andrightfully so. But there's another form of dependency that's just as dangerous: the obsessive attachment to certain beliefs, especially during times of crisis or rapid social change. In these moments, people crave certainty. They cling toideology as a life raft. But that raft often drifts into dangerouswaters—fanaticism, conspiracy thinking, scapegoating, and eventually violence.
