Episode 112 - Bonfire, Hostage Negotiator, Aeon's End Legacy On this episode Steve, Sarah and Dan discuss games that are meant to be played with kids, but are just as much fun with adults. Have you ever taken one of your child's games and played it without them? Ever watched kids playing a game and thought that it looked like fun? We share our Top 3 kids' games that you can play without them!! In our Sizzling Games, Sarah has been rallying her gnomes to build a Bonfire, Steve has been having a blast as a budding mage in Aeon's End Legacy, and Dan has been rescuing hostages while moonlighting as a Hostage Negotiator. We wrap up last week's Bracket Battle match-up (Teotihuacan vs Nemo's War), and we set up the next duel: Res Arcana vs Cartographers. Finally, in Swear An Oath, Steve continues his adventure down the path of Uwe Rosenberg games by playing Hallertau. Sarah is continuing to play all of her unplayed games in 2020, while still working on her 10x10 Challenge. Meanwhile Dan is still trying to finish his first game of Mage Knight, while exploring the intricacies of Atlantis Rising. New oaths for the team are Remember Our Trip (Steve), Teotihuacan Custom Challenges (Dan), and in a charity gesture: "helping Dan finish Mage Knight" (Sarah). In this episode Norm and Scruffy share their thoughts on the Aeon's End system and in particular the Legacy game. Their analysis includes the mechanisms that all Aeon's End games share and expands to what makes the Legacy game special (without spoiling any of the story). They also open up the analysis to the different narratives in the game including both the written story that drives the game forward and the emergent narrative that is born from the player's interaction with the game. In this episode we welcome Katia Howatson from Board Game Art Creations to the show. In our Kickstarter segment, Katia tells us how she came to create her amazing boardgame-inspired artwork that is currently on Kickstarter, how she got some of the industry's biggest publishers on board, and the challenge of using boardgame components to make the incredible mosaics. Her project was funded in only 48hrs, so it's all systems go! The campaign ends on July 15th so make sure you follow the link to secure one of these amazing calendars for yourself. 2021 Board Game Mosaic Calendar A high quality calendar comprising 13 works of art inspired by publishers such as Stonemaier, Roxley, Board & Dice and many more!  www.kickstarter.com   In our Sizzling Games segment, Sarah hits the ground running with her review of Aeon's End Legacy and Katia tells us about the map-making goblin-madness of Cartographers. Mitch finds that Too Many Bones is still never enough, and Steve shares his adventures in the table-sprawling Heroes of Air, Land and Sea. Our Topic of the Week is Solo Games! Are you a solo gamer? Has the isolation of COVID19 restrictions turned you into a solo gamer? We explore the merits, and of course the fun, of solo gaming in the modern era. The team offer up some of their favourite solo games, as well as some great entry-level games if you are solo-curious. In the Board Game Bracket we reveal the winners of the recent showdown: Lords of Waterdeep vs War of Whispers. Then Sarah and Mitch breakdown the next big battle: Mage Knight vs A Feast For Odin. Or, as they describe it; "getting a headache" vs "collecting junk". Make sure you hit up our socials to make sure your favourite gets through to the next round. Finally in Swear an Oath, Steve clears the decks by fulfilling his oaths to play both Tiny Towns and K2. He then vows to bring the Plaid Hat game Forgotten Waters to the table this weekend. Sarah swears to blow the dust off Starfighter and finally get it to the table, while Mitch played Dreamscape to honour his oath before pledging to visit feudal Japan in Crossroads of Heroes. And Katia joins in the oath swearing by promising to play Sorcerer by White Wizard Games. If you are making your own oaths to play games from your "Shelf of Shame", make sure you share your success with the hashtag #oathfulfilled on Instagram! The Kickstarter roundup crew is back! Liz from Beyond Solitaire and Jeremy from Jambalaya Plays Games rejoin Jason as we take a tour through all of the amazing projects we have been playing lately. This week, all of our games share the fact that they have fantasy-based themes. First, Jeremy and Liz insisted that ENGN re-visit our review of Aeon's End: Legacy (2:44). Jason was up and down with his thoughts, so Liz and Jeremy want to set him straight! Next up, Liz shares about Call to Adventure (9:30), the very, very light dice chucking game of making a fantasy character and living out an adventure story. We'll let you know if it's worth it for "real' gamers. After that, Jason and Jeremy get into two games that both put new school design chrome on old school, dice driven, epic games engines. Jason chats about Gloom of Kilforth (21:20) and Jeremy shares about Folklore: The Affliction (36:50). Finally, we get into a little chat about folks who consistently ask for fantasy game recommendations on different online groups and forums. There are so many! We recommend a few more that might have flown under your radar.

We're talking deckbuilders this week, starting with the family weight game that teaches basic atom theory in as fun a way as I could think of, Subatomic (6:21). Also on the lighter side but for an older audience, we have the highly tactical and very cute Dale of Merchants (11:47). Our last two deckbuilders for the episode are both cooperative behemoths. First, we have Shadowrift (19:51), an oldie but goodie originally released in 2012 where you defend a town against marauding baddies (spoiler alert: I think it holds up very well!). Finally, we get into Aeon's End: Legacy (30:20). We know how good Aeon's End is, but is the Legacy part of it any good? For the discussion topic, we get into the good and the bad of deckbuilders. A big shout out to everyone who contributed to threads on BGG and Facebook. Between those two discussions, we cover a lot of what people are drawn to with deckbuilders, and also what might create some difficulties.
