Hey hey BATT Family! This week's episode is another episode of our This or That (or (in this case) the Other Thing) as we run down the three games of Stonemaier's Span series. We've been deliberating on two of the games for quite some time and now that we have Finspan in hand and have gotten to play it quite a bit, we felt it was finally time to break this down. We hope you enjoy this specific deep dive (pun unintended) into the three games! --- This episode's segments: 00:00:00 - Intro 00:01:45 - Game Overviews 00:03:36 - Theme 00:08:41 - Production 00:18:39 - Gameplay 00:26:54 - Teachability 00:29:22 - Replayability 00:29:55 - Expansions 00:35:33 - Solo Modes 00:38:00 - Final Thoughts / Pick 00:44:39 - Outro --- Notes! 1) Our conversation is making the assumption you know the basic system of Wingspan as we don't go into specific detail of how to play any of the three in particular. We discuss their various differences but not how the games fully function. 2) All copies of the games we discussed were purchased by Mark and are his personal copies. This is not a sponsored set of reviews/comparisons in any way. 3) When choosing which game Mark would pick of the three during the Final Thoughts section, almost a minute of deliberation was cut as he couldn't choose. That's how close two of the games are for him. --- You can email us at boardallthetimegaming@gmail.com. We can be found at www.boardallthetime.com and on Facebook at Board All The Time. Expeditions is a new game within the 1920+ universe that was created by artist Jakub Rozalski. The game designer Jamey Stegmaier previously partnered with Jakub to create Scythe, which is a hugely popular game with multiple expansions. It also happens to be in my top 5 all-time favourite games. Expeditions is clearly something very new. It has the look and feel of Scythe, but the mechanics are substantially different. So much so that there is no way that one could consider expeditions to be another expansion to Scythe. We absolutely love Scythe, but having played it to death it has been a long while since we have been able to enter into the 1920+ universe of Jakub Rozalski. In expeditions the art is still provocative and engaging. I was instantly drawn to the story. However, what really makes or breaks the game is how well the new mechanics work. Does this new game capture the same feel as Scythe? Is it different enough to be worth playing? Does it live up to the hype of being a true sequel to Scythe, or could it even be a better game?
In this episode... Kellye and Adam finish up the BGG Gen Con preview list, and circle back through the games added since they started. (48 more have been added since then. This
This episode is all about birds. Larry joins us once again as we cover the engine builder known as Wingspan. Designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier, this board game has become extremely popular over the last few years, and for good reason. If you have difficulty with bad audio for sensory reasons, this episode may not be for you. We had to re-record the episode because our audio equipment died on us so the volume is all over the place here.
We are back! Join David, Michael, and Jesse as they talk how to craft a collection, a game that ISN'T in David's top 100 to play list, and one of Stonemaier's okayest games. A comprehensive list of what transpires in RRR would sound like the incoherent ramblings of someone undergoing a very potent trip, which is why we merely indulge in a curated list. This week, Bob and Natasha are back at it with three games. First up is the roll and write from Stonemaier games, Rolling Realms. This is super interesting because you end up playing a bunch of mini games based off of the Stonemaier game catalog. After that they discuss the drafting game Hadara. This game is simultaneous, you get to draft and you climb up tracks?? What's not to love? Last up Bob and Natasha review a new party game from Repos Productions, Fun Facts. In this game players need to know a bit about the other players at the table as well as themselves. Definitely a game for families. And in the discussion topic they look at their favorite party games at the moment. Which ones will be at the top?
Jamey Stegmaier and his company Stonemaier games have consistently put out some of the greatest board games ever made; so when they release something new, it always catches our attention. In this special episode Sarah and Adrian welcome back to the show, and the team - Def!! It's exciting to have him back after a brief hiatus and we certainly missed him. Def doesn't waste any time getting back into the swing of the tabletop talk as the crew discuss Fantasy Realms, the potential of the video game Elden Ring becoming a board game, Stonemaier's announcement of Viticulture World, and how much we love keeping stats. Don't forget our Sizzling Games: Adrian loved exploring the historical roots of Prague, Def has well and truly fallen down the COIN rabbit-hole, and Sarah has been increasing the difficulty of one of her favourite games. In the Board Game Bracket we settle the last match-up, Eclipse: 2nd Ed vs Marvel Champions, before we cue up the next battle: On Mars v Gaia Project. To make sure your favourite goes through to the next round make sure you vote on our socials. Finally, in Swear An Oath, Adrian got his Jaws of the Lion Party back together, Sarah played Railroad Ink with the "Pluckman" Dice, and Def - well, no one can remember what his last oath was. New oaths include 1862 (Adrian), The Smoky Valley (Sarah), and Perseverance (Def).
