Bethesda's space epic promised to be “Skyrim in space”, the question is, did it succeed? While the answer is thankfully yes, it by no means gets to fly through space with its ship unscathed. You can check for contraband, but we promise this one is spoiler free.

A State of Play stream was announced right before this week's episode, so naturally we watched it, and our thoughts are within. Topics of interest from Sony's showing include release dates for Helldivers II and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, new PS5 and DualSense colors, an open beta for Foamstars, Resident Evil 4 Remake DLC, and more. However, all of that news is covered in a pickup, because we recorded a huge show for you without all of that. Have you heard what's going on with the popular engine Unity? You should familiarize yourself with the situation, because it's a fascinating one that best represents the strained nexus between creating games and paying for them. Plus: Roblox is finally coming to PlayStation, Square Enix is 'in trouble,' but not really, PS5 gets new firmware while fresh PS+ games come to the Extra and Premium tiers, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Should Colin finally break down and play Skyrim? Are artists really more important than the suits that often oversee them? Have cinematic trailers gone too far? Will Dustin be kidnapped by the Yakuza in Japan, forcing a hefty cash payment? Join us for an unusually old-school episode of Sacred Symbols. Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode the crew discusses their history with Bethesda games including Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, Fallout 4 and more! Then they dive into their spoiler-free impressions of the first new intellectual property from Bethesda Softworks in 25 years, Starfield. They talk about what they like and what they wish was better. Topics include ship combat, the look of the game, bugs, the NASApunk aesthetic, and more! They ask the question, is this game just Skyrim in space? And if so, its that a good thing or a bad thing? They also ponder whether or not Starfield will make it to their game of the year lists later this year. The episode wraps up with Andrew hosting a fun trivia game for Dylan and Joe to see who can guess the game faster based off of the information provided from the ESRB. Have you played Starfield? For years, the Dukes were met with abuse and slander due to their faith in Starfield on how it can serve as a turning point in the current generation. The reviews have come and gone, the talk on the streets has become a bit messy to put it lightly, but the numbers don't lie. Starfield is a raging success across all metrics as it is now Bethesda Game Studios' biggest launch of all time as it managed to beat out the likes of Skyrim and Fallout 4. To do so in an exclusive capacity puts things into perspective even more. With six million players already accounted for and likely millions more beyond that this point, Bethesda has committed to "years and years" of support thus paving the way for Starfield to become the most played Bethesda game ever as Phil Spencer desired. We also get into the mind boggling decisions Unity is making in regards to its popular game engine, Square Enix's recent plummet, the upcoming reveal of Indiana Jones, the Fallout TV show's leaked teaser trailer, and a plethora of more news in a jam packed week. Xbox's most anticipated game of the year has finally arrived: Starfield. Starfield is Bethesda's first new universe in 25 years and it leaves the team...divided. Some like it, some say it leaves a lot to be desired. Will it have the staying power that Skyrim had in gaming history or will it quickly be forgotten? We also review Pikmin 4 on the Switch. This is a cute little game featuring tiny plant-like creatures. You adventure around a planet trying to rescue the Rescue Corps and find the Pikmin of all types. It has a great art style, fun gameplay and a breath of fresh air when playing all these super demanding games. In the news, we anticipate some gaming talks coming from the iPhone 15 announcement but we also discuss a software release earlier this year that allows easier gaming on the mac. Will we finally see gaming officially come to Mac computers? We discuss rumors of the Switch 2 with a new camera feature, new cartridge types, backwards compatibility and more.

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we complete our series on Eye of the Beholder. We talk more about D&D adaptation, spend some time with a sequel, and get to our takeaways before emptying the mailbag. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Issues covered: which levels count in the sequel, killing lots of beholders, whether you could have killed Xanathar in the original, striation of hit point values, scaling for sense of power, paying off on the quests, finding all the beholders, beholder physiology, having more fun with beholders as designers, bulettes and basilisks, "just keep going," being trained for level navigation, designing towards the player understanding, wanting coordinates, using simple concepts well, modular repeatable and combinable concepts, leaning into the limitations, an onion layer level, "mapping matters," loving drawing maps, sanding off of friction (various ways of telling the player how to get there), being more embodied in the dungeon, the more you take out the less the experience becomes, allowing for abstraction and having to draw you in other ways, translating D&D, why simulate the math, a bad game to simulate, "what is a saving throw?," using video games to inform the evolution of your tabletop game, emphasizing the human, a more elegant system, dice variance, a useless party experience, usability issues, bad games that were influential on us, remembering movie moments but not the gameplay, even bad actors are better than what we could do at the time, digging into all the RPGs, not knowing what to do in SimCity, DOS vs Mac music and early audio, a craftman's respect for audio, warm analog music, hearing multiple versions of the same soundtrack, not playing a lot of real-world games, physics in games and pitting against fun, wanting to get to specific rides vs how you build a park, Tim gets turned off on the CRPG book, building on foundations and the legacies they carry, business concerns, shipping code passing cert, climbing uphill to make changes, maintaining the feel.
