The year was 1979 and a scrappy little 16 year old named Richard Garriott started coding his friends' latest Dungeons & Dragons campaign into an Apple II. This is the small domino that fell over to eventually result in millions of players worldwide romancing a bear 30+ years later in Baldur's Gate 3. How did we get there? Well, there's a lot of answers to that question but a predominant step was through the landmark CRPG series, Ultima. In this episode of Doing Well, we explore the research behind video games and their relationship with digital social connectedness. While video games are often portrayed negatively in traditional media from claims of promoting violence to enabling harmful online interactions — this conversation focuses on their positive impact. Our guest, Hannah Gunderman, Ph.D., sheds light on how gaming can foster connection, creativity, and wellbeing in meaningful ways. Hannah Gunderman, Ph.D. is a researcher and educator specializing in video games and wellbeing, popular culture, and cultural geography. After spending most of their career in academia, they shifted to applied work in gaming, including serving as a Wellbeing Researcher at Lumi Interactive and now working in video game market research. Outside of work, Hannah Gunderman, Ph.D. enjoys hiking, spending time with pets, and playing classics like Skyrim and Oblivion. Throughout the episode, Hannah Gunderman, Ph.D. and host Sarah discuss how gaming can build social confidence, provide a sense of belonging, and even replicate “third spaces”, those comforting in-between places like cafés or libraries that offer community beyond home and work. They touch on the balance between enjoyment and overindulgence, noting that journaling can help players stay mindful of their emotions before, during, and after gaming. Together, they remind us that video games, when used intentionally, can be powerful tools for connection and joy. 10-7-25 Tonight we're talking meadmaking with Bill Bellair and Rob Barnhart. Both are experienced meadmakers that create excellent meads. And both have taken their share of awards at competitions. Bill Bellair began his mead-making journey in 2008 when his mother expressed interest in trying tej, a traditional Ethiopian honey wine, which was unavailable locally. His early attempts—while not without the occasional "bottle bomb"—yielded surprisingly delicious results. Following this, Bill turned his attention to beer brewing, and it would be several years before he returned to crafting mead. During this time, he joined the Metro Enologist 'n' Zymurgist (MENZ) club, where he expanded his skills in winemaking. This experience gave him valuable insight into the mistakes he had made in his early mead-making efforts, reigniting his passion for the craft. This marked the beginning of a dedicated era of mead production that continues to this day. In 2019, Bill founded the Michigan Mead Coalition, the state's largest mead-exclusive organization. The coalition has fostered a thriving community of skilled brewers, many of whom have earned prestigious awards and even pursued the coveted title of Mead Maker of the Year. Rob Barnhart has been making mead since 2018. He started making mead January of 2018 because he doesn't like beer. He was playing Skyrim a lot and looked it up on YouTube. Down the rabbit hole he went. Soon after he found Gotmead and Modern Mead Makers. He then talked Vicky into meeting him at St Ambrose and Vicky and Kirk told Rob to enter comps. He didn't do too badly. So far he has 25 medals but still haven't gotten the coveted best in show.

I've started up another Skyrim playthrough, which for me is usually one of the biggest red flags that burnout is raising its ugly head, as this game, while a thing I enjoy, is something I tend to delve into when I need a thing to fill time while not having my brain go brr. (So look forward to that “Conversations with an Adult part 2: Burnout Boogaloo” episode in two months) but. That's not why I'm here. I'm here to soft pitch the thesis that “No Stone Unturned” is an ok quest actually. For those of you that don't know, there's a Skyrim quest where you stumble across an “unusual gem” (what's unusual about it is that it is hot pink in the gray/brown/green ass game) and then, upon getting it appraised, finding out that your gem is part of a set of 24 and you gotta go find ‘em. And unlike most quests, there's no quest marker telling you where they are, so this is no easy feat. Once you collect these 24 gems, you're sent to go collect the crown they're from, at which point, the quest ends and your reward is this passive ability to find more gems (and gems more often) while you're out exploring. “Burgs, this sounds horribly tedious,” you might say. “Eh,” is my impassioned response. The thing with quests like these is that (shocker) the people that built the game from the ground up want you to play it. They spent time and effort and all that jazz building all of these areas, especially in an open world game like Skyrim, and they want you to explore it. Therefore, games like these are going to have quests that incentivize you to explore: think the shards in DA: Inquisition, the metals/gasses/literature/mummies or whatever in ME1, audio diaries, bobbleheads, souls, orbs, power moons, friggin….Korok seeds, the examples are endless. The game wants you to play it, and if you don't want to, then…idk, touch grass, I guess. The quest is optional, just don't interface with the hot pink gems if you don't want to. If you want quest markers, there's a mod. Or countless lists on websites you can use to track stuff. It's ok, you'll get through it, or you won't. No biggie.  What does this have to do with the music of 2005? Almost nothing, other than music itself also working in a very similar way. If you're willing to explore, your new favorite band could be in the dark corner over there. The next song that will “change your life, I swear” says Natalie Portman in 2003 might be opening for a band you already know but you skipped the opener to arrive late like a Cool Person. If you don't want to look for hot pink gems, it's all optional, mainstream radio's got you. But you'll never know what a Korok seed does unless you find one. (also don't tell me, I haven't played that Zelda game yet.)

Nintendo is back in the conversation with a banger of a game with Donkey Kong Bananza. Exclusive to the Switch 2, Donkey Kong Bananza is one of the best platformers probably ever featuring fully destructible environments and dopamine hits with every smash of a rock you do. With Pauline by your side, venture down into Earth the planet's core through a variety of sublayers that represent different types of terrains and styles. It's a dense game with a ton of fun, charming characters, incredible tech and great music.Jason also surprises us by picking up Death Stranding 2. Not only did he pick it up, he's clocked in over 45 hours so this is a more in-depth review from Jason digging into why Death Stranding 2 has quickly become one of his favorite games of the year. Brett plays Mecha Break which is a mech game with hero shooter style mechanics. It's free to play and you pilot a mech in 6v6 or 3v3 objective style missions or dive into a 3 player game in an extraction mode. The game looked ok but is suprisingly a ton of fun. The question...can it keep us engaged long term?Austin dives into Atomfall that released earlier this year. With the hopes that it would bring back the feelings of Skyrim and Fallout, it unfortunately did not meet the standards Austin hoped for. It's a beautiful game but doesn't give the carrot on the stick he's looking for to keep exploring.Lastly, we have our review of the video game adaptation Until Dawn. Now a movie, it's set in the universe but follows a new story with the same premise. Is it as good or better than the game? TSR and Wizards of the Coast veteran Steve Winter (Steve achieved one of the longest tenures across both companies). Steve plays guitar. Steve likes Shadowdark RPG, and is also interested in Knave, Savage Worlds, and Cthulhu / horror games. Steve has a definite favorite version of D&D (he finds it elegant and intuitive). Deep character backstory doesn't equal plot armor. Sometimes we get too used to magic in games and think of it as technology… magic should be a bit fearsome and untame. Noteworthy moments of going insane in a Cthulhu game. Skyrim and Baldur's Gate 3 discussion. Steve co-wrote the scenario for the Gold Box Pool of Radiance game. Some words about Jim Ward. Early versus later days at TSR. The job that was Steve's best year at TSR. How was the work divided at TSR? Steve offers some perspective on Lorraine Williams's leadership, given that he was right there. What was it like to be at TSR and watch Magic: The Gathering explode onto the scene? Steve worked on Spellfire, TSR's response to MtG. What was it like transitioning from TSR to WotC? Star Frontiers: how it went from hard sci-fi to “D&D in space” and how employees' desire for royalties led to its creation (and ultimately to the departure of Lawrence Schick from TSR). Marvel Super Heroes RPG discussion (MSH is HUGE for Shane personally). Shane Plays Geek Talk Episode #284 - 7/28/2025 Like what you hear? Great fun was had by all. From there, Chewie goes into why he's less interested in Magic these days, but how thinking critically about it for all those years has stirred a deep interest in how elements of game design come together in all the games he plays. Any Austin has carved a unique niche for himself on YouTube: analyzing seemingly mundane or otherwise overlooked details in video games with the seriousness of an art critic examining Renaissance sculptures. With millions of viewers hanging on his every word about fluvial flows in Breath of the Wild or unemployment rates in the towns of Skyrim, Austin has become what Tyler calls "the very best in the world at the hermeneutics of infrastructure within video games." But Austin's deeper mission is teaching us to think analytically about everything we encounter, and to replace gaming culture's obsession with technical specs and comparative analysis with a deeper aesthetic appreciation that asks simply: what are we looking at, and what does it reveal? Tyler and Austin explore the value of the YouTube algorithm, what he notices now about real-world infrastructure, whether he perceives glitches IRL, why AI-generated art is getting less interesting, how the value of historical context differs between artistic forms, an aesthetic abundance agenda for nuclear power, the trajectory of video game quality since the 80s, whether the pace of seminal game releases has slowed, the relative value of commentary to the games themselves, why virtual reality adds nothing meaningful to the gaming experience, what's wrong with most video game analysis, what to eat in New Orleans, Tyler's gaming history, and more.
