Living With Intent: Music, Community, and Staying True with Emcee ShowYouSuck

The Tour Life

In this episode of The Tour Life, we chat with Chicago-based emcee, ShowYouSuck, an artist known for his unique approach to hip-hop and his collaborations with Air Credits, The Hood Internet, and more. ShowYouSuck shares his journey from growing up as a solo creative, discovering rap as his outlet, and ultimately finding success on his own terms. Along the way, he learned to navigate the challenges of building a music career in Chicago's diverse and often fragmented scene. We dive deep into the concept of creating with intent and discuss ShowYouSuck's unique outlook on life, which balances the highs and lows without letting them define his self-worth. He also talks about his post-apocalyptic rap project, Air Credits, his experiences with DJing, and the importance of fostering community in an industry where support can often feel elusive. Throughout the conversation, ShowYouSuck emphasizes the importance of loving the process over focusing on the outcome. Key Takeaways: Community and Support: Being part of different friend groups with varied interests helps expand your network, which can open unexpected doors in your career. Intentional Living: Moving with intention in your art, relationships, and life can bring a greater sense of fulfillment and control. The Importance of Self-Talk: How you talk to yourself impacts your outlook on your career. Speaking positively, even when things aren't perfect, is essential to keeping your momentum. Process Over Results: Letting go of attachment to outcomes, like crowd sizes or song plays, is key. Falling in love with the creative process itself brings more satisfaction than focusing on metrics. Staying Grounded: Life and art are a series of events—neither good nor bad. The only thing you can control is how you react to them. STEVE REIDELL is a typography enthusiast and a Chicago musician: he is one-half of DJ/production duo The Hood Internet, and one-half of the band Air Credits alongside fellow Chicagoan ShowYouSuck. He formerly worked as the in-house art director at Metro and Smart Bar. The First Time is CHIRP Radio’s Live Lit and Music series. It pairs a reader’s personal story about a specific "first time" -- a different "first" for each show -- with a song performance. This unique structure allows the story to resonate with audience members as they experience the accompanying song covered by The First Time Four. The band takes special care to perform unexpected song arrangements, so it is hard to tell which the audience enjoys more: the story or the song. The First Time is produced and directed by Julie Mueller with Assistant Producer Bobby Evers and Host Jenn Sodini. Podcast produced and recorded by Jenn Rourke. Engineering by Tony Baker. Lili K's new EP "Songs With Friends," is what happens when an artist sheds the weight of the world and just makes music because it's fun. But she has not sacrificed quality in the process - collaborations with Chicago favorites The O'My's and Air Credits, as well as her Milwaukee friends and musicians Klassik, B-Free and Evan Lane, make this collection sound just a good as it must have felt to make it. Jill Hopkins spoke with Chicago Jazz singer about the therapeutic and invigorating process of making music just for the love of it. In the process, Lili was able to re-discover self-love, self-care and joy of creating that she was lacking in the last several years. The EP comes ahead of her forthcoming full-length "Planet of Flowers" due later this year.
