Bass Drum of Death was back in Chicago on 9/24/25 for a show at Beat Kitchen, and I sat down with John Barrett (singer/multi-instrumentalist) shortly before he took the stage. We talked about: *Chicago, and the band’s “Live and Let Die” album that was recorded at Cobra Lounge. *The new album, “Six,” a fuzzy, garage rock, banger. *What major lifestyle change has freed John up while on tour? *The pervasive influence of ZZ Top. *What does rock and roll mean to John? Not in Chicago? You may still have a chance to see the band while they’re on tour this Fall! Highly recommended! He’s also been doing his own thing for decades, most notably with Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. He’s a prolific recording artist whose discography is super deep, varied, innovative, fun, and screaming for repeat visits. I think rock and roll has become harder to define as the years have advanced, but whatever that definition is, he fits it. Before he played at Beat Kitchen, Kid jumped in the car and talked about: *His prolific output. I mean, music just pours out of him. *The forthcoming release with Naim Amor, “Tuscon Safari” (check out the video for “Surf Sirens,” mentioned in the interview. *Where the next generation of “Kid Congos” is coming from. *Music fandom. *Kid’s history with, and affection for, the Cramps. *The second life of “Goo Goo Muck.” *The horror tip he got from Siouxsie Sioux. *The key to building a band “brand” - bringing fans along into your world. *His must-read memoir, Some New Kind Of Kick. It was important to frame the album’s completion around how the band has dealt with dramatic blows over the past few years, the most dramatic and impactful being Tony’s cancer diagnosis and his inspirational fight to come out on top. True to form, Tony discusses the topic with transparency and sincerity. Not to spoil any of the details, but it’s important to keep doing the things that inspire you, no matter what kind of hand life deals you. I’m joined for this episode by two guys who spent decades turning a smart, biting sense of humor into underground, DIY favorites as part of Too Much Joy, and later… Wonderlick. We talked during the pandemic about Too Much Joy in a standard COVID-era “Zoom” chat… and this time around, I met Tim Quirk and Jay Blumenfield in person. We met at the wonderful Blue Island Beer Company, where the band was set to play later in the evening. Sitting outside on a perfect Chicago weather day, we chatted about: -The differences between Too Much Joy and Wonderlick -The new album, “Wonderlick Goes to War” -Tim’s obsessiveness about… everything? -Why is there a documentary crew following them around everywhere? -What the studio sessions were like for this album -What being a musician is like in 2025, as opposed to Too Much Joy’s heyday -The Chicago connection to the new Wonderlick album -Vinko Bogotaj: Who was he? Why does Wonderlick have a song about him? -There’s a major Too Much Joy reissue on the way! See Wonderlick on tour, and give “Wonderlick Goes to War” a listen. They’re awesome. This episode had a long, strange journey. Recorded at Legit Dogs + Ice in South Elgin less than 48 hours before the restaurant closed for good, this episode features guests Lollygagger, Coyote Man, flowersatherfeet, Chris Baker from Ink 180 and Brennan Weaver/Phil Lisiecki of Wild Dogs Comedy. The recording started an hour later than scheduled, due to house audio problems I still don’t understand. Adding to the weird, “closing forever,” vibes was having to watch people leave the room because they didn’t want to wait any longer for the show to begin. And yet… the guests were fantastic. When I do events like this, the interviewees all give their time and energy to be part of the podcast. No money changes hands; it’s all for the love of the game. Each guest delivered in every possible way, and I’m incredibly grateful for their presence. Back to the strange journey … the sound guy told me I’d have the produced audio from the episode within two weeks of the 8/22/25 recording date. At the two week mark, I emailed asking for an update. He told me he wasn’t interested in working on the files; he had walked away from the project, and I’d need to get the audio from one of Legit Dogs’ investors. Of course, it would have been lovely for him to have told me that on the night of the show, or even in the subsequent two weeks. Alas… That led to me to meeting the investor in Schaumburg on 9/13, who handed over a hard drive with several files. When I opened up the hard drive, I realized the evening’s recordings were captured in Logic Pro, a program I don’t own, and that is cost-prohibitive to pay for (especially for a one-time use). Luckily, Logic Pro offers a 90-day trial, which I signed up for simply to open the 24-track recording. It’s worth noting at this point that I’ve never mixed live audio like this before, particularly live music performances. I’d like to apologize to the bands for your songs ending up in my unprofessional hands. Once in Logic Pro, I exported all 24 tracks as Wav files so I could load them into the digital editor I normally use. After the export finished, I tried to load the tracks into my editor, but that move kept crashing my computer. After a few frustrating hours, I took a piecemeal approach - I loaded in the specific tracks for each individual segment (e.g. band interview, performance, stage announcement) and exported those as I went. Some of the raw spoken word audio sounded like hot garbage, so I did my best to salvage it with AI - admittedly, it doesn’t sound the way I’d like it to, but it’s more usable than it was. Once I had the audio files produced for each of the segments, I then went through the super challenging task of synchronizing the audio to the video. With very limited exception, the video was captured without audio, so it wasn’t possible to auto sync those files. Two other “Easter eggs” found in the live files: My outro/thank yous after Lollygagger weren’t recorded, so I couldn’t include them here. Also, the recording inexplicably stopped during the second flowersherfeet song, only to be picked back up 10 minutes later. A few more notes: Due to music publishing concerns, no music performance was included in the audio episode version. I included one song from each artist in the video episode version. Both songs performed by each bands are available as individual YouTube files. Brennan Weaver’s comedy set is absolutely NSFW. I didn’t include a lot of the Legit Dogs-specific content here. Not out of disrespect, but more because it’s been a month since the restaurant has closed, and the details are already dated. Thanks to Matt, Jenn, Curt, and Jennifer for all their support. Sorry to see a good thing come to an untimely end. The lighting on the main camera totally sucks. Not a show-stopper, but I’m aware that the stage left/stage right footage looked better. Thanks again to Lollygagger, Coyote Man, flowersatherfeet, Chris Baker from Ink 180 and Brennan Weaver/Phil Lisiecki of Wild Dogs Comedy. This week, Features co-director Jessi D speaks with Chicago-based sludge pop trash princess, Meredith Johnston aka warm human. They discuss how the purchase of a new instrument usually inspires the creation of an album, navigating loss by letting the creative process loose on her newest album, Hometown Hero, and how dealing with a uterine fibroid removal in the days of the Roe v. Wade overturn inspired the single "PUSSY IS A GUN." "And so, honestly, I don't remember a lot of it, but I do remember that I just kind of said 'yes' to every single thing that I came up with. I was like, 'yep, great, yep, great.' And that was just so liberating, and maybe that's because I didn't have the capacity to be nervous or comparative. As an artist, I can get so bogged down with, 'well, this doesn't sound like what other artists are making,' or 'this doesn't sound like this artist that I've been listening to on repeat lately.' I just didn't have any of that. I was like, we're going for it. We're wailing." - Meredith Johnston, on the creative process of her newest album Hometown Hero Warm human will be playing at the Empty Bottle on Saturday, June 24th with Jimmy Whispers and Sports Boyfriend. Djunah's second album, “Femina Furens,” is brave. It's raw. It's cathartic. It's gut wrenching. It's fierce. It's vulnerable. Most importantly, it's great.   Donna Diane of Djunah jumped in the car outside Innjoy, in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago, to talk about the new album. Much of the songwriting evolved from Donna's “diagnosis and continuing recovery from complex post-traumatic stress disorder, or C-PTSD,” and she shares insight into that process.   Djunah is a force of nature, and this album is one of the most personal and powerful musical portraits you'll hear all year.   See Djunah at Empty Bottle in Chicago on March 24 (along with Huntsmen)!     __ Car Con Carne is sponsored by Suburban Roofing and Siding, a family-owned company that provides interior and exterior home remodeling services, offering services to the Chicagoland area.
