Chicago ‘26: three nights, one tornado warning, and a travel itinerary scripted by chaos itself. Night one gets two songs into Talia Hall before everyone — band included — gets herded into the beer cellar for shelter. Night two, the Empty Bottle delivers as the stragglers finally roll in. Night three goes big: massive venue, four massive acts, and Garrett sliding in right as the headliner hits the stage. Gaspar recaps his travel disasters in full Boy Scout rock-uniform glory, and Mike won't stop bragging about his Lincoln balcony seats in the Land of Lincoln. They were, against all odds, determined. Chicago '26 unfolds like a tribute to Planes, Trains and Automobiles—but Unified Scene style.chalk drawing courtesy of::https://www.instagram.com/latenightchalkshowPlease send us a voicemail:https://www.speakpipe.com/TheHoodratRecapPodcastPlease contact us at:https://linktr.ee/thehoodratrecap?utm_source=linktree_profile_share

On a sweltering 90-degree summer day, Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer joins James VanOsdol in the car for episode 1128 of Car Con Carne. To beat the heat, they enjoy ice cream from Rainbow Cone while diving into the new Sincere Engineer album, Probable Claws, which arrives on June 26th. Deanna shares behind-the-scenes stories about writing the tracks, and how her songwriting has evolved to focus on a more refined, classic structure for this release. The conversation covers the fascinating details behind the album's tracks, including the opening song "Twist My Tongue" and the standout track (and JVO favorite) "LOL," which features a surprise spoken-word introduction from actor Wil Wheaton. Deanna explains how that internet friendship blossomed, leading to a fun discussion about her own name being inspired by Deanna Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation. She also reveals the hilarious, stealthy process of filming her latest music video inside a Jewel grocery store right before closing time. As Sincere Engineer prepares for a massive summer ahead, Deanna also previews her upcoming performances at major Midwestern festivals, including Summerfest in Milwaukee on June 25th and a return to Chicago for Riot Fest in September. Check out Probable Claws on June 26! ## Exploding House Printing is here for all of your screen printing, embroidery and other merchandising needs. Zeb and Ray from the fantastic North Carolina band Bask join me for this episode as we chat on the back patio of Livewire Lounge in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood. Bask released their epic, genre-defying album The Turning last year, blending elements of psych, prog, atmospheric rock, and country into an incredibly awesome, cinematic vibe. We dig into their collaborative songwriting evolution, how they execute their massive sonic dynamics, and how their music serves as a true journey for the listener. Plus, since the interview fell on Zeb's birthday, we talk about the band's essential Chicago birthday stop: hitting up Johnny's Beef in Elmwood Park (this band knows how to maximize their tour down time). L7 takes victory lap on 'Last Hurrah' tour (Episode 1124) L7 is embarking on their final run, The Last Hurrah Tour, capping off a legendary career with a final celebration of iconic songs, hooks, and unforgettable riffs. For Chicago fans, the circle closes at the Vic Theatre on Sunday, November 1, a stage the band hasn't commanded since 1994. In this episode, L7 co-founder, guitarist, and vocalist Donita Sparks joins the show to reflect on the long road, the band's legacy, and what it means to finally say goodbye on their own terms. Donita looks back at the band's transition from its indie roots to early 90s alternative mainstays and highlights along the way, like being anointed by John Waters for Serial Mom. "We wanted our gender to not be relevant... we just wanted to prove in a punk rock way that you could throw a band together, work hard, and go on tour." — Donita Sparks Beyond the nostalgia, Donita dives deep into the sonic DNA of L7, explaining why they will always be a "guitar band, not a vocal band." She opens up about the realities of the 90s major label system, the resilience it took to create The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum, and the joy of reconnecting with fans over the last decade. It's a candid conversation about hard work, and ultimately, a mission accomplished. The end is near, and you don't want to miss the last hurrah. Press play and check out the full conversation with Donita Sparks. "We're a little egoless. We're happy to just do the content, be a part of the lighting, or help anybody execute and create something cool." — Robb Jibson In this episode, I sit down with Robb Jibson, the founder and creative director of So Midwest, a Chicago-based production design firm. Robb has spent decades building the visual experiences that define live music for artists like Fall Out Boy, Incubus, and Panic! At The Disco. We discuss his journey from a teenager in Michigan to the center of the concert production world. Episode highlights The "Tetanus" origin story: Robb recounts his early days in a metal band called Tetanus and how an attempt to use car headlights for stage lighting led to a run-in with the law and a formative stint doing community service at the Frauenthal Theater. Touring with the Backstreet Boys: At just 19 years old, Robb landed a spot on a tour with the Backstreet Boys during the height of their popularity. The birth of So Midwest: Originally started as a tax shelter while touring with Incubus, the company name was inspired by a simple 1-inch button found at the Empty Bottle. The shift to motion graphics: Robb explains how the industry transitioned from "smoky beams of light" to complex video content and 3D animation around 2007. Working with Chicago legends: We talk about his long-standing relationships with local favorites like Alkaline Trio, The Lawrence Arms, and Chevelle. In this episode of Car Con Carne, host James VanOsdol talks with Colombian icon Andrés Cepeda. A multi-Latin Grammy winner and 2026 Grammy nominee for his album Bogota, Cepeda visits the podcast to discuss his upcoming performance at the Riviera Theatre on May 10. This Chicago date marks the beginning of the final leg of a tour that has spanned two years and multiple continents. Highlights from the conversation Cepeda reflects on his 30 years in the music industry, offering insights into his creative process and his evolution from a teenage rock musician to a global solo artist. Starting the US tour in Chicago: Although the tour routing began in Chicago due to logistics, Cepeda shares his excitement about returning to the city where he has performed on several previous tours. The power of storytelling: Cepeda explains how sharing the anecdotes behind his songs helps him connect with multi-generational audiences, including those who may not be familiar with his music. Finding an authentic voice: Having served as a mentor on The Voice and The Voice Kids, Cepeda emphasizes the importance of originality for independent artists. He suggests that authenticity is the only way to stand out in a world where thousands of songs are released daily. The recording of Bogota: The album was recorded in Los Angeles and Bogota using analog techniques. Cepeda describes the experience of "locking himself in" with a band for weeks to capture a more organic, realistic sound. What comes next: As the Bogota tour concludes, Cepeda is already looking toward the future. He plans to begin a new project in July and is working with several producers on a fresh album this summer. Event details Catch Andrés Cepeda live as he kicks off his latest run of shows. Venue: Riviera Theatre (Lawrence and Broadway, Chicago) Date: May 10, 2026 The Show: A full band performance featuring musicians who have collaborated with Cepeda for over 20 years. James VanOsdol sits down with Sean Mulroney at the legendary Gallery Cabaret in Bucktown to discuss the evolving landscape of Chicago's music scene. Mulroney, the owner of Double Door, shares major updates regarding the iconic venue's future and his new role as the operator of Gallery Cabaret. A new chapter at Gallery Cabaret After 38 years as a Bucktown staple, Gallery Cabaret is undergoing a revitalization under Mulroney's guidance. The goal is to preserve the dive bar's classic Chicago vibe while elevating the experience for artists and patrons. Upgraded Sound: The venue now features a professional sound system, incorporating high-end gear from the Double Door collection. Community Focus: The heart of the bar remains its open mic nights, which provide a platform for everyone from jazz musicians to poets. Staff Continuity: To maintain the bar's soul, Mulroney has retained a mix of legacy staff and new team members. The pivot of Double Door Mulroney provides a candid update on the Double Door relocation. While the previously announced move to the Wilson Theater in Uptown is no longer moving forward, the brand is far from dead. "Double Door was never intended to be a nine million dollar venue. The math doesn't work for a 750-capacity club." The high costs and rigid requirements of city grant programs made the Wilson Theater project unfeasible. Instead, Mulroney is currently scouting a new location that aligns with the "roadhouse" spirit of the original Double Door. He is currently working through zoning and city requirements to bring this new vision to life. Open mic and booking information Gallery Cabaret continues to be a home for local talent. Musicians, poets, and performers of all stripes are encouraged to participate in the weekly schedule: Sundays: Open Mic (Sign-up at 6:30 PM). Tuesdays: Open Mic hosted by Victor. Thursdays: Open Mic hosted by Kelly Wazer. Artists interested in booking a set or showing art can reach out to the venue directly at bookinggallerycabaret@gmail.com. In this episode of "Seeing Them Live," host Charles welcomes back Paul Peterson, a retired technology manager and lifelong audiophile who hosts the podcast 'An Avid Listener.' Together, Charles and Paul explore the complex world of bands performing with significantly changed lineups. The conversation was sparked by Paul's recent concert experiences, including seeing Alan Parsons and the Doobie Brothers with almost entirely new members, which led him to question what makes a band authentic and what concertgoers are really seeking when they buy tickets based on a famous name.Charles and Paul examine numerous examples of lineup changes with varying outcomes. They contrast successful transitions like AC/DC replacing Bon Scott with Brian Johnson and Iron Maiden swapping Paul Di'Anno for Bruce Dickinson, with more questionable situations like Grand Funk Railroad touring without Mark Farner, the Beach Boys performing with only Mike Love, and Queen continuing with Adam Lambert. The discussion reveals how fans often purchase tickets unaware of major personnel changes, raising questions about transparency and the power of brand names in the music industry.Paul encourages listeners to research bands before attending concerts and seek experiences that offer more than nostalgia. He emphasizes the value of artists sharing stories and offering unique performances rather than simply recreating studio recordings, praising innovative approaches like Steely Dan performing entire albums in sequence and intimate acoustic sets from aging rockers. While lineup changes are inevitable, the key is transparency and delivering an experience that justifies the ticket price—whether through musical excellence, storytelling, unique venues, or discovering new bands at smaller, more intimate settings.BANDS: AC/DC, Alan Parsons, Beach Boys, Beatles, Black Sabbath, BoDeans, Brian Auger, Doobie Brothers, Duke Tomato and the All Stars, Eagles, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Flaming Lips, Fleetwood Mac, Gov't Mule, Grand Funk Railroad, Grateful Dead, Heart, Iron Maiden, James Gang, Johnny Reno and the Sax Maniacs, Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin Two, Motley Crue, Pink Floyd, Queen, Rolling Stones, Scorpions, Steely Dan, Super Tramp, The Doors, The Who, Toto.VENUES: Arcadia, Auditorium Theater, Candlestick Park, Chicago Stadium, City Winery, Empty Bottle, Fitzgerald's, Hollywood Bowl, House of Blues, Living Room, Riot Fest, Shea Stadium, The Sphere. Jonathan of Time Thieves returns to the podcast in advance of the band’s LP release show at Empty Bottle on February 26 (also featuring Josh Caterer Trio, Al Scorch, and Earl Gary). We met at Dante’s (1936 W. Chicago), which played host to a Palermo’s Unreal Foods pop-up: VEGAN TACO HELL. Returning guest Mustafa is one of the principals at Palermo’s, and he shared the amazing Crunchwrap and Taco Hell Grande with us - I swear it tasted authentic, and was entirely plant-based. Jonathan and I talk about the suitable-for-framing-and-playing new album, old record players, authentic recording, and the goal of being a one-hit wonder. It’s always a great time with Jonathan - hope you enjoy listening/watching! ##Let’s talk about merch. “You're born, you'rе cursed, and every deck is stacked.” Who are the Brokedowns? “A tradesman, two remote workers, and a pizza chef named Mustafa forged their sound in the industrial glow of Chicagoland, channeling blue-collar grit through a lens of existential comedy and transforming Midwest frustration into something loud enough to sound like hope.” The Brokedowns piled into the car to chat about their excellent new album, “Let’s Tip the Landlord.” It’s not every day you can get all four guys in the same place, so I was excited to be joined by: Kris Megyery (guitar/vocals) Eric Grossmann (guitar/vocals) Jon Balun (bass/vocals) Mustafa Daka (drums) We go deep into “Let’s Tip the Landlord,” an album that includes a saxophone, a disturbing recurring ad, loving gaslighting, the Beach Boys and Sirhan Sirhan … a must-listen! As I head toward the end of my appendectomy/ileocectomy recovery, I jump back into podcasting with an obvious guest: Dr. Daryl Wilson of the Bollweevils. Who better to talk through the past 2 ½ months of medical madness than a celebrated ER doctor with decades of experience? We talk through my experiences, from the moment my appendix burst through my current recovery, all discussed with a requisite amount of dark humor (and insight). If you ever wanted to know what the most vomit-inducing experience was during this period, we don’t hold back (spoiler: the colonoscopy doesn’t even come close). After Daryl “clears me” to return to podcasting and we put a bow on my appendix era, we get into Daryl’s new band, Pressure Set. It’s surprising, brand new, and something you’ll want to look out for in 2026. And don’t forget the Bollweevils: They have big plans for ‘26, as well. I’m grateful to have a friend like Daryl, and I think after listening to this episode Daryl will feel like a friend of yours, as well. So yeah… I’m back. As Daryl says in the episode, I’m “big back.” Thank you for your support, positive vibes, and kind words. Let’s have fun this year. -JVO ### Let’s talk about merch. Sam Russo put out his fourth album (“Hold You Hard”) a few months ago and is currently touring the states in a run-up to the Fest in Gainesville later this month. The new album was written across America, and feels like the result of travels that were well, if not thoughtfully, spent. Sam jumped in my car in front of GMan to talk about the new album, video-making, songwriting, and a shared love for horror films. As I mentioned in a recent social post, Sam is one of the most genuine, authentic souls I've come across in my decades of interviewing musicians. He speaks, writes, and performs with unflinching sincerity and rawness … his new album is a wonderful leap forward for him as an artist - highly recommended. The Flock was making noise on a national level starting back during the Nixon administration. They were unorthodox for the time: Jazz. Prog. Rock. Fusion. A little bit of everything, all masterfully played by the individual band members. They put out a few major label albums in their prime (Columbia, Mercury) … then, just as quickly as they came onto the scene, they faded away. Jerry Smith (bass/vocals) from the Flock joins me on the northwest side for this episode to talk about the band’s remarkable history (your jaw will drop at how many legendary bands they shared stages and experiences with) and what the present day vision is for the band. This chat is true Chicago (and classic rock) history, told by a guy who’s seen and done it all. I think you’re really going to appreciate it. (Please note: We talk a lot in this episode about an upcoming Park West performance. Due to an unforeseen circumstance, that show had to be canceled. Hopefully we can see the band live again soon!) ## Looking to transform your home, office, or business into a smart, seamlessly connected space? This episode finds me at the fabulous Volo Antique Malls, where I can easily lose myself for hours at a time. Owners/managers Keith and Lisa Santiago sat down with me to talk about collectibles and antique culture, as well as the fact that their buildings are “haunted.” Seemed like the perfect time of year to dig into the latter, as paranormal tours of the facilities are being conducted along with the Volo Auto Museum. Frank and River of wht.rbbt.obj are back to talk about their excellent new album, "Oscar Bravo Juliett." As I mention early in this episode, the new album is a collection of songs that are alternatingly (sometimes all at once) fuzzed out, torchy, sexy, and searing. We met at Charlie Beinlich's in Northbrook for burgers (and a tuna salad sandwich) - thanks to the team there for the unexpected curbside service! I'm back at Noon Whistle's Lombard Brewpub (800 E. Roosevelt) for this one. They've pulled me back with yet another mad scientist idea. I've had cicada-infused Malort there. I choked down Garlic Butterlort, still an all-time low taste experience. And now, I'm back for a Car Con Carne collaboration of sorts: Malort Con Carne, which is Malort infused with… chili. I'm joined once again by Marketing Director Joey Giardiniera for a twisted odyssey into spirits and mix-ins. We don't bury the lede on this one - we get right to trying it. As far as good drinks go, I loved the Festbier I had on this visit. Noon Whistle's line of beers ranges from "brilliant at the basics" through, "Oh, I need to know what that tastes like." You really can't go wrong there. And yes, have a pizza when you're there. They absolutely kill it with their food menu. It's my favorite time of year - I'm back at Hellsgate Haunted House in Lockport to see what's new at the haunt and meet up with creator/owner John LaFlamboy. Joining me for the trip this year are two of my favorite people: John and Maria of the synthy, edgy, glorious gothpop duo clubdrugs. Get tickets at hellsgate.com - Thursday-Sundays through the 19th, then Wednesday through Sunday starting on the 22nd. It's a must-visit every year, and you wouldn't be wrong to visit more than once per season. John and Maria were the perfect first-time HellsGate visitors, and became instant, lifetime fans. They observed and appreciated nuances that only superfans would recognize, and it was fun to hear them share their thoughts and questions with John LaFlamboy. John LaFlamboy shared what's new for HellsGate this year (the biggest and best example is the mausoleum - OMG). He also talked about the business of running a haunt; specifically the good that can come from failing. John from clubdrugs picked up on the subcultural, community vibe that HellsGate creates, much to John LaFlamboy's appreciation. And it's true: When you're at HellsGate, there's a special, unique-to-that-world, feeling of belonging from start to finish. My annual CCC visit to HellsGate is something I look forward to each year, and I always appreciate John LaFlamboy's insights and creativity. Having my super-creative friends in clubdrugs join in the fun for this episode made for an absolutely exceptional evening and podcast experience. Speaking of clubdrugs: They dropped a major band announcement toward the end of the show. Not to spoil it, but… they just signed a record deal and new music is imminent! Bass Drum of Death was back in Chicago on 9/24/25 for a show at Beat Kitchen, and I sat down with John Barrett (singer/multi-instrumentalist) shortly before he took the stage. We talked about: *Chicago, and the band's "Live and Let Die" album that was recorded at Cobra Lounge. *The new album, "Six," a fuzzy, garage rock, banger. *What major lifestyle change has freed John up while on tour? *The pervasive influence of ZZ Top. *What does rock and roll mean to John? Not in Chicago? You may still have a chance to see the band while they're on tour this Fall! Highly recommended! I’m joined by Emilie and Josh from Venus Club — they’re a dark wave Chicago band that I absolutely adore. The new EP, Extended, is dreamy, haunting, and well positioned for your autumnal listening pleasure. We met in a south side parking lot, as people do, and chatted about their sound, their drunken origin story (subject to debate?), Ace of Base’s oeuvre, and they joys of physical media. I'm joined for this episode by "one of Chicago, Illinois' biggest crybabies," Devon Kay. Devon's a favorite of mine, and it was fun to connect before the band's (weather abbreviated) set at the Bay View Bash in Milwaukee. We talked about the band's Harvey Danger cover, their status as "world's greatest band," the latest on their next (ska-free) album, and our plans to record a podcast in the band's van. Warning: This episode will make you want to play more pinball. This episode was recorded outside the perfectly-curated pinball cafe, Pin Grounds (31 W. Irving Park Rd., Roselle, IL). Thanks to Art for his hospitality, and for opening up on an off night to host this podcast and its guests. Thanks also to Dan Lewis of Easy Automation for hosting this episode in his truck and making ribs for everyone (they were amazing!). This episode is all about pinball, and includes the following guests: Andy Bagwell - One of the top-ranked pinball players in the U.S. Mike Felumlee - Smoking Popes drummer, pinball enthusiast Frances Mai-Ling - Pinball enthusiast, runs juniors division We talk about the pinball community, tournaments, tips for amateurs like me ("flip less!"), favorite games, and Chicago as "ground zero" for pinball. Pinball culture is real, and I'm totally on board with it.
