Like it or not, more people are using artificial intelligence than ever. On this week's On the Media, hear about the AI arms race between the U.S. and China, and how the tech gets overhyped. Plus, a composer wrestles with a new AI music generator – which threatens his own job.[01:00] Brooke speaks with Ed Zitron, host of the Better Offline podcast and author of the newsletter Where's Your Ed At, about how tech moguls have gotten away with overhyping A.I. for years. Plus, the apparent race for AI supremacy between the U.S. and China.[18:09] Brooke continues the conversation with Ed Zitron, peeling back the facade to explore what generative A.I. can actually do.[29:51]  Former OTM producer, and current composer and sound designer, Mark Henry Phillips, on how AI music generators could fundamentally upend his industry for good.Further reading:“Deep Impact,” by Ed Zitron“Godot Isn't Making it,” by Ed Zitron“Bubble Trouble,” by Ed Zitron On the Media is supported by listeners like you. Our Summer 2025 series, Beside Still Waters, focuses on the places where creativity brings life into a world fatigued by brokenness and division. From jazz to Jane Austen and in between, this season we'll focus on the ways literature and the arts can refresh and challenge our inner lives—and connect us with the Creator of the good, the true, and the beautiful. How should we live faithfully within a world created to be good and beautiful, and yet everywhere marred by ugliness and injustice? Jazz vocalist and composer Ruth Naomi Floyd will guide us in bringing together music, creativity, and justice, and help us think about our roles in repairing, re-envisioning, and creating new places of beauty and flourishing:We know that art shapes and reshapes us and that it's there in the cross of Jesus, I believe, where beauty and violence collided and beauty won. And so that act of loving someone…purposely trying to love someone, especially those that seem or are viewed or deemed unlovable, is…directly connected and intrinsically connected to our art making. We hope you are encouraged by Ruth's artistic journey, as she helps us to find beauty in the midst of suffering, and to express love through creativity. This podcast is an edited version of an online conversation recorded in 2021. I was pleasantly surprised and [found it] incredibly fulfilling when we brought kids who I interviewed down to Florida and thank you to the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra -- they gave us the opportunity to bring these young activists into schools and introduce these young activists -- this is three days after the last election so other kids in these schools were feeling very defeated; in the beginning they were afraid to ask questions...and our kids were in their 20s now and said, "OK, so you're upset.so, what are you gonna do?" There was an exchange of energy between the two of them that was so absolutely gratifying. That was the cherry on top for me. ~Portia Kamons, librettist  SEVENTEEN is a symphonic portrait of young Americans confronting an unprecedented range of challenges, from gun violence to climate change. This week, we dig into Trump's surprise Iran strike: two-week warning turned two-minute missile salvo, 37-hour B-52 round trips, and vaporizing Iran's version of Three Mile Island. It's the same “stop WMDs” story from '08, but now with F-bombs on CNN. I even sketched out a gold “What Are We Doing” button he should carry for moments like that. Then Nickelodeon canceled Tiny Chef after two seasons. That little guy's lips were quivering—come on. We need a petition, a Netflix revival, or at least a uniform at Popeye's.Will Smith's music comeback? Cringe-core. His freestyles sound like 2005, his new chorus only works at 1.25x speed, and no one moved at his street show. Sorry, Will, stick to movies. The Liver King saga hits peak absurd: raw-meat guru exposed as a steroid user, challenging Joe Rogan to a fight, arrested in Texas, now ranting on TikTok. Dude needs help.Shoutout to Brendan Shaw, who moved his podcast into a Texas storage locker—no AC, auto-shutoff lights, train horns every 20 minutes. Fighter and the Kid is spiraling, and Thick Boy Studios is hemorrhaging cash. Finally, David Spade's new movie Bus Boys is stacked with Rogan pals, YouTubers, and Kill Tony alumni. Bet Tony Hinchcliffe cut a deal behind the scenes.I'm wiped from editing two client shows, so this one's a bit short. I'll be back full-force for episode 196. You've played Lethal Company. You've played Content Warning. But you haven't yet played a game like R.E.P.O. This game is from a Swedish developer called Semiwork. It's an online, co-op horror game that supports up to 6 players. Find and retrieve objects to satisfy your creator. Use your physics hand to pick up things in the world and deliver them to the extraction zone. This game is a blast to play. With a variety of monsters, procedurally generated levels and hilarious talking robot characters, we're having so much fun playing with friends. We also review Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. This is a standalone DLC ultimately for Infinite Wealth. It's a shorter experience with real-time combat and a new seafaring mechanic in ships. The game is good, but not quite as good as expected. Despite its flaws, its still fun to play and be a pirate for awhile in Hawaii. We also talk about Xbox and their new initiative to bring AI to games in the form of CoPilot for Gaming. This is meant to guide you in installing games, finding games to play and ultimately making you a better gamer. It sounds neat but is this too much like training wheels for gamers? Isn't part of the fun discovering how to play the game?Lastly, we have a special guest on the podcast again. This time we have Joseph Neville. He's a Fort Worth-based singer/songwriter who you may have seen playing shows around town. His most recent endeavor is Y2K Prom, a concert event where you get to go back in time to the year 2000, drop your phone at the door and enjoy a bit about what life was like 25 years ago with some amazing live music. His current project is a band Crying in the Car which is a mix of TLC and bands like Good Charlotte. In this conversation, we talking about how he got into music, his influences and a lot about the Switch and why it's a perfect console for casual gamers like himself. If you want to follow Joseph Neville you can find all of his social links on his website joepatnev.com.Show Notes:1:05 - Housekeeping2:15 - R.E.P.O. Send us a textBryson Tarbet, founder of That Music Teacher, takes us on a captivating journey through the world of accessible music education. Drawing from his personal experience with ADHD and sensory processing disorder, Bryson reveals how his quest to make the classroom more comfortable for himself evolved into a mission to ensure music is truly accessible for all students. What begins as a conversation about simple seating arrangements quickly expands into a masterclass on creating fully inclusive music environments. Bryson shares practical approaches like offering flexible seating options, adapting instruments with occupational therapists, and color-coding sheet music to help students make visual connections between notation and instrument fingerings. His ingenious solutions range from simple rubber bands that help students grasp mallets to sophisticated one-handed recorders for students with physical disabilities.Beyond the technical aspects of accessibility, Bryson offers a profound perspective on the psychological importance of inclusive music education. He explains how introducing instruments like recorders can create a level playing field where students who typically struggle academically can shine, as everyone starts at the same point regardless of past performance. This insight challenges us to rethink how we structure music education to ensure all students have opportunities to succeed. The conversation takes an unexpected turn when Bryson reveals how COVID-19 forced him to explore alternatives to traditional performance-based music education. This led to the discovery that many seemingly disengaged students were actually deeply musical—they simply resonated with production or technology rather than performance. This revelation has powerful implications for expanding our conception of what music education can and should be.Ready to make your music classroom more inclusive? I've been playing concerts with my flutist friend Joan Sparks for more decades than I care to admit. Our work together has included concerts, being Artists in Residence at schools and retirement communities, producing our own concert series, recording multiple CDs (actually even a couple of cassette tape recordings back in the day) and commissioning some significant works for the flute and harp concert repertoire. In fact, one of those works turned into an actual question on the TV show ”Jeopardy.” I'll tell you that story at the end of the podcast. Of course, our collaboration hasn't all been about work. We don't travel as much now for concerts as we used to, but we did a lot of traveling earlier in our career and naturally we are very close friends. In that time, I also learned a lot about the flute.  One of the biggest revelations I had was listening to Joan practice her long tones. Now this won't surprise any of you who have played melody line instruments, but as a harpist with some years of piano lessons in my youth, long tones were practically a new concept. On the harp, we don't hold a note. We simply play it and it goes effortlessly into the ether. No need to practice long tones.  But this also means that we have no control over a note once we've played it. We can't make it crescendo or decrescendo. We can't add vibrato to intensify it. We can't create a true legato, where one note connects seamlessly to the next.  I think this is partly why we harpists tend not to pay enough attention to phrasing. Yet, phrasing is the breath of the piece. It's the living component of the melody. It's what makes the song sing and the piece flow.  So today's podcast is essentially a guide to phrasing for harpists. We'll talk about everything from what a phrase is and how to identify it, to how to practice it so your melodies can sing. If you've been wondering how to get that “flow factor” into your playing, this will be important information for you, so stay tuned. How to Do This Practice: Find a Comfortable Space: Choose a place where you feel comfortable moving and making noise. You can do this practice standing or seated, whatever feels best for you. Start with a Basic Clap: Clap your hands together lightly, palm to palm. Keep the pressure soft so it doesn't hurt. Try a few claps, following a steady rhythm. Add Chest Percussion: After each clap, tap your sternum lightly with your right hand, then with your left hand. Repeat this rhythm several times. Incorporate Leg Taps: Extend the pattern by adding taps on your thighs. Repeat the Full Pattern: Put it all together in a continuous loop— clap, chest (right, left), legs (right, left). Maintain the rhythm and repeat without pauses. Focus on the sensation of movement and sound as a mindful practice.
