Mark Massaro, DVM, was born and raised in south Jersey and comes from a family of veterinarians – both his parents, older brother, and his aunt are all vets! He graduated from the Cornell University College of Veterinary in 2019. After graduating from vet school, Massaro completed a rigorous rotating internship in small medicine and surgery at the Center for Animal Referral and Emergency Services (CARES) in Bucks County, PA. Following internship Massaro joined the family practice, where he served as an Associate Veterinarian for about a year, as well as the Marketing and Technology Lead. However, Massaro's interests in the veterinary management / technology world grew, so he then took on a series of roles at different companies, spanning from remote work in NJ to on-site positions in Philadelphia, Houston, TX and Knoxville, TN. All of these roles centered around advancing technology in the veterinary industry, specifically relating to electronic medical record (EMR) or practice information management systems (PIMS). In 2023 Massaro returned home to south Jersey and is now the Director of Veterinary Software for VetmEDUcate, a group of 7 hospitals. These include Absecon Veterinary Hospital, Art City Vets & Urgent Care, Audubon Family Veterinary Center, Cape Veterinary Hospital, Exclusively Cats Medical Center of Medford, Mount Laurel Animal Hospital, and Pennsauken Animal Hospital & Urgent Care. Collectively these hospitals employ over 100 vets and 800 total staff. Outside of work Massaro's interests include playing sports (soccer, basketball, tennis, volleyball), as well as hanging out and hiking with his wife Carolyn and their 3 dogs (Treeing Walker Coonhound, Miniature Poodle, and Texas Street Pitbull) and 2 cats (only the dogs hike, but not for lack of trying!). He is also very passionate about mental health in the vet profession, as well as the recent advancements in AI, and where those two things meet (i.e. AI scribes getting vets home on time!) and is very active on Linkedin! There's a powerful connection between movement and cognitive performance. Standing up and moving around can both foster diffuse thinking—the kind of relaxed mental state that encourages breakthroughs and innovative ideas. In this episode, I'll share Cal Newport's research on training the brain for deep work through “productive meditation”, a practice that involves focusing on a specific problem while engaged in physical movement. I'll then share 4 practical ways to incorporate productive movement into your instruction, not as a break from learning but as a critical component of it: Standing meetings and discussions to increase engagement and collaboration. Dictation while walking, allowing students to process and express ideas on the move. Using audio learning while students walk, so they can absorb information away from their desks. Encouraging walking brainstorming sessions to help students collaborate and generate new ideas. I'll also share how to extend these strategies to outdoor environments for an even greater cognitive boost, even if you don't have a large, quiet school campus. Finally, I'll talk about handling off-task behavior and off-topic conversations you observe during productive moment activities, and offer a mental reframing you can use to determine when you should (and shouldn't) use these movement activities. Discover how simple shifts in how we think about movement can unlock deeper thinking and more focused learning for both you and your students! This week, I interview Sarah Elisabeth Sawyer, an author, speaker, and Choctaw storyteller from Texas who has published 19 books. Sarah writes historical fiction, primarily focusing on American Indian characters, particularly from her own Choctaw heritage. Her *Choctaw Tribune* series, for example, highlights the Choctaw people, although she also includes characters from other tribes like the Chickasaw and Cherokee. Sarah shares the importance of writing about American Indian characters authentically. We discuss her frustrations with historical fiction's common stereotypes and how Native characters were often depicted inaccurately. And then we talk about the use of dictation in writing, a technique she has mastered to write more efficiently and comfortably. Dictation has doubled her writing speed, allowing her to produce up to 4,000 words an hour, making it easier on her body and reducing the exhaustion associated with typing.

“The accounting profession historically has been like taking a trip with an atlas that's 10 years out of date. However, today, what we can do with modern accounting and advisory services is much like the Waze app or Google Maps; you're getting instantaneous data that will tell you ‘Up ahead there's a roadblock and here's a workaround.' This real-time info keeps you on track with your financial forecast. You can't make any business decisions on historical information; you must have current information and be able to look forward so that you can make good decisions and stay on track to reach your goals.” –John Scott The finer details of this episode:Importance of thought leadership in the accounting and legal professionsJohn's experience with a law firms' growth and scaling based on data and metricsDiscussion and insights from John's book, “Judicial Dollars and Cents,” on understanding cash needs and working capital for businesses, including law firmsUnique elements of serving law firms and the complexities of partner compensation plansThe significance of data-driven decision-making in business management Episode resources:Summit Virtual CFO by Anders website: https://www.summitcpa.net/If you have questions or would like to be a guest on the show, email us at mcpasuccessshow@anderscpa.comCheck out the Virtual CFO Playbook Course: https://vcfoplaybook.summitcpa.net/Get the book: https://home.virtualcfo.cpa/johnscott Timestamps: The Introduction (00:00:00)Introduction to the podcast and its mission.
