In this episode of The Tour Life, we chat with Chicago-based emcee, ShowYouSuck, an artist known for his unique approach to hip-hop and his collaborations with Air Credits, The Hood Internet, and more. ShowYouSuck shares his journey from growing up as a solo creative, discovering rap as his outlet, and ultimately finding success on his own terms. Along the way, he learned to navigate the challenges of building a music career in Chicago's diverse and often fragmented scene. We dive deep into the concept of creating with intent and discuss ShowYouSuck's unique outlook on life, which balances the highs and lows without letting them define his self-worth. He also talks about his post-apocalyptic rap project, Air Credits, his experiences with DJing, and the importance of fostering community in an industry where support can often feel elusive. Throughout the conversation, ShowYouSuck emphasizes the importance of loving the process over focusing on the outcome. Key Takeaways: Community and Support: Being part of different friend groups with varied interests helps expand your network, which can open unexpected doors in your career. Intentional Living: Moving with intention in your art, relationships, and life can bring a greater sense of fulfillment and control. The Importance of Self-Talk: How you talk to yourself impacts your outlook on your career. Speaking positively, even when things aren't perfect, is essential to keeping your momentum. Process Over Results: Letting go of attachment to outcomes, like crowd sizes or song plays, is key. Falling in love with the creative process itself brings more satisfaction than focusing on metrics. Staying Grounded: Life and art are a series of events—neither good nor bad. The only thing you can control is how you react to them. We speak with Chicago based rapper, ShowYouSuck, who has made a name for himself in the video game world with music inspired by the games he loves. We also talk about a YouTuber who allegedly had private investigators show at his home from 2K games to ask him about the content he had been putting on his channel pertaining to Borderlands 3. Born and raised in the West Town community of Chicago, Na$im’s broad taste in music genres has matured him as a producer and DJ. With influences from several composers, Na$im’s creativity categorizes itself. Na$im Williams in recent years has emerged as one of the biggest talents coming out of Chicago within its renaissance of hip-hop with his cutting edge production and his life-of- the-party DJ sets. On the production side has released various highly acclaimed instrumental projects which revolve around the beat-smith’s unique and diverse sound. Na$im has a niche sound which ranges from older sampled based records to heavy hitting trap sounds. Apart from this he has also produced records for the likes of Treated Crew, Mic Terror, Gzus Piece, Sulaiman, Nick Jr, PST Saint, ShowYouSuck and Lili K amongst other artists. When he’s not in the studio working on future hit- records, Na$im is in heavy rotation spinning throughout Chicago’s busy nightlife. Initially starting via the college/university circuit he is now opening up for the likes of Travis Scott, GLC and Boldy James whilst frequenting various other nightclubs and venues around the United States. When it comes to personal brands, ShowYouSuck (aka Clinton Sandifer) is a true beacon both online and throughout the Chicago scene. He's worked with fellow rappers Sims, Mr. Muthaf@#kin eXquire, and more recently, Steve SLV from The Hood Internet with Air Credits, a dystopian musical project. He even has his own clothing company, Slushcult, inspired by a love for slurpees. We chatted about writing, mistakes, putting your world into the work, and how he's kept a sense of humor about it all for the past 7 years.
Now Arby's and The Neverending Story have something in common. One half of Chicago-based mashup pioneers The Hood Internet, Steve SLV (aka Steve Reidell) is a prolific music producer with a network that spans the globe. TBH, most musicians in the northern midwest kinda need just know him as a rite of passage (plus he's funny). Hear us discuss teamwork and wisdom, fantasy-fueled 80s in the Twin Cities, and his new project Air Credits with rapper Showyousuck. It's a geeky goodie!
