In this episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we delve into the enigmatic world of Madvillain and their acclaimed album "Madvillainy," released in 2004. This album is a monumental collaboration between two of hip-hop's most mysterious and respected figures, MF DOOM and Madlib. Known for its abstract lyrics, lo-fi production, and free-form jazz samples, "Madvillainy" stands as a titan in the underground hip-hop scene, influencing countless artists and albums since its release. From the haunting tracks "Accordion" and "Meat Grinder" to the introspective "Rhinestone Cowboy," "Madvillainy" is a tour de force of experimental hip-hop. Each track offers a glimpse into DOOM's complex lyrical prowess and Madlib's eclectic beat-making. This album is not just music; it's a piece of avant-garde art that challenges the boundaries of traditional hip-hop. Throughout this episode, we'll explore the creation process behind "Madvillainy," the unique synergy between DOOM's masked persona and Madlib's obscure samples, and the impact this album has had on the hip-hop industry. We'll discuss how "Madvillainy" has achieved cult status, becoming a benchmark for innovation in music production and lyrical storytelling. Join us on Dem Vinyl Boyz as we break down "Madvillainy," celebrating the genius of Madvillain and their indelible mark on music history. This episode is an homage to the art of collaboration and the enduring legacy of MF DOOM and Madlib's masterpiece.

On this week's pod, it's a deep dive into an album from one of our perennial favourites, as it celebrates 20 years. It's the turn of the MF DOOM and Madlib's classic 2004 album Madvillainy by Madvillain, a dense, psychedelic, colourful rap album that quickly cemented itself as one of the best rap albums of all time when it came out on Stones Throw that year. Why is Madvillain so important? It's the sound of two masters of their craft - Madlib deep crate-digging wizz of flipped samples which avoided the musical grid and DOOM's "tripping off the beat kinda" rhymes which defied expectation and form, and became endlessly quotable while retaining complex and comedic intent. Madvillainy is the sound of two elusive creatives ricocheting off each other's oddball styles with disorienting brilliance.Niall and Andrea discuss the album's gestation, recording, leak, samples, lyrics and mythology. In January, we hosted a Listen Closely listening party in the Big Romance in Dublin with this album. Our next one will be Wednesday February 28th with Laurie Anderson's Big Science. English electronic musician Kieran Hebden has been a constant artist in my life's history of listening to music.Recently, the artist has exploded in popularity in his DJ partnership with Skrillex and Fred Again.., but as we'll discuss, headlining Coachella this year, was just a natural culmination of two decades plus of music making and collaborations. On this week's episode it is all about the music of Four Tet.We discuss his origins in the Elliott School with fellow now-famous musicians Burial and Hot Chip, the formation of his first band Fridge, who signed their first record deal when Hebden was just 15.We take you through an output that moves from jazz, folk, electronica stylings of his early work, the seminal album Rounds from 2003, his subsequent collaborations with Burial, Steve Reid, remixes work for the likes of Madvillain and Caribou, and how his live show worked. // On Wednesday November 8th, we are putting on a Listening Party at the Big Romance playing Four Tet's Rounds (2003) in full, as part of the Listen Closely monthly series. And onto his independent releases throughout the last 15 years as his music moves from the ambient instrumental electronic music to the more club-focused 4/4 tracks that came about as he began to DJ at Plastic People and DJ at festivals around the world. We discuss his court case with Domino, and how his flirtations with remixing pop artists telegraph his bromance with Fred Again.. and Skrillex. Madvillainy is the one and only album by the duo known as Madvillain, that included Madlib and MF Doom. This album took both these guys to another level. After the praise they received from every publication at the time, MF Doom decided to go deeper underground and release the second Vaudeville Villain album. Madlib would spend a lot of time after this release trying to convience Doom to do a part two. Check out this episode on this classic album and listen to a few of the tracks. Thanks and have a great day.

We're back after a long but necessary hiatus. And what better way to return than with....oh no. Welp, Kanye is back on the podcast, and even more treacherous than last we talked about him. Which is a shame, because College Dropout is a genuinely fun, and funny, album. With a clear potshot at Ye's recent history, Matt talks some albums that try to Make Hip-Hop Fun Again in Del tha Funky Homosapien's Both Sides of the Brain and Madvillain's Madvillainy (which also means this is the second pod appearance for the late, great MF DOOM). p.s. We actually recorded this one before our hiatus, so ignore any dated references.
This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with Los Angeles-based writer Will Hagle. Will is a co-host of the Connecting The Classics podcast and a great deal of his work can be found on the webzine Passion of The Weiss. He is also the author of the excellent 33 ⅓ book dedicated to MF DOOM and Madlib's album Madvillainy. The book — which is the focus of this episode — celebrates Madvillainy as a representation of two genius musical minds melding to form one revered supervillain. A product of circumstance, the album came together soon after MF DOOM's resurgence and Madlib's reluctant return from avant-garde jazz to hip-hop. Written from the alternating perspectives of three fake music journalist superheroes — and featuring interviews with Wildchild, Cut Chemist, M.E.D, Walasia, Stones Throw execs, and many other individuals involved with the album's creation — Will's book blends fiction and non-fiction to celebrate Madvillainy not just as an album, but as a folkloric artifact. It is one specific retelling of a story which, like Madvillain's music, continues to spawn infinite legends. In this episode host Michael Shields and Will Hagle discuss both Madlib and MF DOOM's origin story while expounding at length what makes Madvillainy such a special and enduring piece of art. They explore the somewhat disputed stories on how MF DOOM and Madlib connected for the project, and dig into how unique it was that Madvillainy existed as an album that straddled the analog and digital eras. They celebrate the song “Accordion,” as one of the most unparalleled songs in hip-hop history, remark on Madvillainy's profound influence in modern music, and so much more.Grab a copy of Will Hagle's Madvillainy 33⅓ here — and learn more about Will's projects at his subtack. Wrestling and youth soccer tournaments, they go together just like amphetamine and soma's and oh man do the boys want to talk about both!!! This week Doug and Bill take on Konosuke Takeshita, ghosts, dick punches, Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling, Eddie Kingston, Best Friends, New Era Pro Wrestling's Red, White, & Bruised, FTR, Claudio's Finishers, Masha Slamovich, CYN, the use of deadly weapons during a wrestling match, and so much more! Rest In Power Cuda. Here are a couple of questions for you after listening: What is your favorite mall food court restaurant? Can a tag team be the number one overall in the PWI Top 500? What's up with Bill's infatuation with gloves? My answers: I'm an East Coast Pizza person myself. No, rules are rules and once they are broken society will descend into madness and absolute demonic rule. Seriously, he has a lot of single gloves just kind of laying around his “office”. Virtuality has entered our lives making anything we desire possible. We are, as Gorillaz once sang, in an exciting age where 'the digital won't let [us] go…' Technology has revolutionized music, especially in the 21st century where the traditional rules and conventions of music creation, consumption, distribution, promotion, and performance have been erased and substituted with unthinkable and exciting methods in which absolutely anyone can explore, enjoy, and participate in creating and listening to music. Virtual Music: Sound, Music, and Image in the Digital Era (Bloomsbury, 2021) explores the interactive relationship of sound, music, and image, and its users (creators/musicians/performers/audience/consumers). Areas involving the historical, technological, and creative practices of virtual music are surveyed including its connection with creators, musicians, performers, audience, and consumers. Shara Rambarran looks at the fascination and innovations surrounding virtual music, and illustrates key artists (such as Grace Jones, The Weeknd), creators (such as King Tubby, Kraftwerk, MadVillain, Danger Mouse), audiovisuals in video games and performances (such as Cuphead and Gorillaz), audiences, and consumers that contribute in making this musical experience a phenomenon. Whether it is interrogating the (un)realness of performers, modified identities of artists, technological manipulation of the Internet, music industry and music production, or accessible opportunities in creativity, the book offers a fresh understanding of virtual music and appeals to readers who have an interest in this digital revolution. Shara Rambarran is Assistant Professor of Music at Bader International Study Centre, UK (Queen's University, Canada). She co-runs the Art of Record Production conferences and is an editor on the Journal on the Art of Record Production and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Music and Virtuality (2016).
