We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2015 conversation with Bill Withers.  ABOUT BILL WITHERSPop and R&B legend Bill Withers released nine albums between 1971 and 1985 that included such classic songs as “Lean on Me,” “Ain't No Sunshine,” “Grandma's Hands,” “Use Me,” “Lovely Day,” and “Just the Two of Us.” Though he stepped away from the limelight in the mid-1980s, his songs have become classics that have withstood the test of time and been covered by iconic artists including Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Gladys Knight, Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Paul McCartney, Ike & Tina Turner, Smokey Robinson, Al Green, The Staple Singers, Diana Ross, Neil Diamond, Sting, Linda Ronstadt, Roberta Flack, Buddy Guy, Barbra Streisand, and George Benson. Additionally, his music has been sampled by Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, L.L. Cool J, Tupac Shakur, and Kanye West. Withers was in the inaugural class of the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame, and is a nine-time Grammy nominee. He won three Grammy awards for Best R&B song for “Ain't No Sunshine” in 1971, “Just the Two of Us” in 1981, and the Club Nouveau cover of “Lean on Me” in 1987. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

We heard from 3 ministry leaders this Sunday on Prayer + Outreach, Discipleship, and A Place for Everyone 1- Crystal Allemand who challenged us to see our life as a mission field. That we are called to go out into the community and world as sowers and waters, not just harvesters. Then she shared about the upcoming opportunities at Parkway for prayer and outreach. 2- Mark Swanburg shared about the difference between believing and following. How discipleship happens when you are in The Word and in Relationship with God. That through Discipleship, you can discover your gifts. 3- John Anderson challenged us by asking us, "Why are you here?" Then talked about how the body is made of many parts and a dangerous prayer we can be praying, "Here I am Lord, USE ME!" Lord, Use Me by Kendall Fox Isaiah 6:8-13 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”  9 And He said, “Go, and tell this people: ‘Keep on listening, but do not understand; And keep on looking, but do not gain knowledge.'10 Make the hearts of this people insensitive,Their ears dull,And their eyes blind,So that they will not see with their eyes,Hear with their ears,Understand with their hearts,And return and be healed.” 11 Then I said, “Lord, how long?” And He answered, “Until cities are devastated and without inhabitant,Houses are without peopleAnd the land is utterly desolate,12 The Lord has completely removed people,And there are many forsaken places in the midst of the land.13 Yet there will still be a tenth portion in it,And it will again be subject to burning,Like a terebinth or an oakWhose stump remains when it is cut down. The holy seed is its stump.”

True Stories Pt. 3 – Loving the Unlovely & Inconvenient By Louie Marsh, 8-25-2024   (2 Sam 15.23–16.14) chronicles the story of David and his followers who escaped Jerusalem along this route after David's son Absalom had declared himself king. King Zedekiah of Judah used the road when he tried to escape the advancing Chaldeans in 586/587 B.C.   Josephus tells us that the Tenth Roman Legion used this Jericho‑Jerusalem road on their way to besiege Jerusalem in A.D. 69.   When Mark Twain traveled along the Jericho Road during his 1867 pilgrimage, his party employed "two gorgeous young Arab sheikhs" armed with cargoes of swords, guns, pistols and daggers to protect them from imaginary Beduin marauders.  Mark Twain states that during his entire pilgrimage, he had no more need for the "guards" than he had for patent leather boots or white kid gloves   SHOW PICS AND VIDEO   1) I need to PAY ATTENTION to what I'm saying.   25  And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Luke 10:25 (ESV)   ·       Pray that God will help me COMMUNATE clearly.   “19and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,” (Ephesians 6:19, ESV)   2) Rationalizing moral/spiritual failure is a function of my EGO.   26  He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27  And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28  And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” 29  But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Luke 10:26-29 (ESV)   3) Regardless of my status in life, God wants to USE ME.   30  Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31  Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32  So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33  But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. Luke 10:30-33 (ESV)   ·       There are opportunities all around me if I have eyes to SEE.   “18having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,” (Ephesians 1:18, ESV)   4) Christian compassion equals ACTION.   34  He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35  And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.' Luke 10:34-35 (ESV)   ·       What I do is determined by what PEOPLE NEED.   15  If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16  and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17  So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. James 2:15-17 (ESV)     5) My neighbor is whoever GOD puts in my path.   36  Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37  He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.” Luke 10:36-37 (ESV)

Artists across disciplines have harnessed generative AI as mind-extenders, expanding the possibilities of their work, and unleashing new ways to see the world. But as bots get more adept at human-like thought, writers, actors, and others protest in lawsuits and on picket lines, asking: What's left for artists? Should tech companies be allowed to use existing art to train AI engines? Who gets credit—and paid—for AI-assisted creative work? What do we lose when machine brains take over aspects of our creativity, once a defining feature of humanity? And, tantalizingly, what do we gain? LACMA's Art + Technology Lab program director Joel Ferree, Concept Art Association co-founder Nicole Hendrix, Writers Guild of America AI working group member John Lopez, and interdisciplinary artist Sarah Rosalena join Zócalo, Arts for LA, the ASU Narrative and Emerging Media program, and LACMA to discuss whether AI heralds the end of humans making art to make sense of the world, or a new key to being and seeing. Dating seems to be one of the most accessible things in the digital age and also one of it's biggest pain points. Not only in the superficiality of design but also in the lack of real connection through apps and platforms. We've grown accustomed to obscure ways of choosing a mate and may have even gotten ourselves in a place of fantasy that's proving hard to escape from. This episode dives into the shadowy bits of dating in this modern age as well as our new favorite dating past time and faux pas...ghosting. We discuss the potential reasons for ghosting, what it's like to be ghosted, and how we can heal on both ends of the spectrum. Please subscribe, follow, and share! Bummer-pop artist Meredith Johnston (aka Warm Human) and I go back many years to our improv comedy days, and that rapport allows me to give her the shit she deserves for her love of butt rock and nu metal. Meredith's a great storyteller, charismatic, complex, dark, and painfully honest about the twists of her brain. Her willingness to display all these facets of herself makes for an intense episode AND one of the most entertaining. Content warning: eating disorders, physical abuse, (drug/alcohol) addiction, Meredith likes Imagine Dragons, Cream Cheese Hot Dog. Mike Brunlieb (Joe Pera Talks With You, South Side) is one of the greatest improvisers of his and my generation of Chicago comedians. We dig into the reasons behind his love for playing both bullies and cucks. But performance is just the tip of this conversational iceberg. This is a particularly intimate conversation for 2 reasons: 1) Mike's a close friend, and this was the first time we'd seen each other since pre-COVID, and 2) his daughter Nina slept against his chest for the duration of the interview.
