Michael Jackson - Why 3T feat. Herbie - Gotta be you Brian Green - That's right Oasis - Whatever (Live at Knebworth 1996) You Know Who - Guantanamera George Michael - Fastlove Fugees - Fu-gee-la (North Side Mix) Scatgirl - I'm a scatgirl No Doubt - Different people Los Del Rio - Macarena

A (relatively) in-depth analysis of British funk band Cymande in under thirty minutes.Cymande was formed in London, in 1971. All were members of an Afro-Caribbean community in Balham, originating from nations such as Guyana, Jamaica, and Saint Vincent. Cymande were discovered by British producer John Schroeder while they played in a club in Soho in 1971. Schroeder recorded some demos and convinced Janus Records to sign the group. Their first single 'The Message' reached the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot R&B charts in the United States. Their debut album was released in 1972 and also reached the Billboard pop and R&B albums charts in the United States. In 1973 they made history as the first British band to headline the Apollo Theatre in New York, and they also performed on Soul Train. However, they achieved little recognition in their home country. The lack of support from the British music industry caused the group to disband in 1974.After a period of obscurity, Cymande's music was rediscovered in the 1980s and 1990s. Some of their songs were deconstructed and used as breakbeats by early hip-hop DJs. Their song 'Bra' is the most sampled track, having been used approximately 27 times in various hip-hop and other music tracks.A new album Renascence was released in 2025, The also group announced 2025 US and European shows to support the release, continuing with their post-pandemic increase in short tours and festival appearances. In this episode I am in discussion with Bhoke.Mathew Woodallhttps://www.facebook.com/share/1F15mx4ea3/https://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. Following an intro from Spandau Ballet mainmain Gary Kemp speaking in January 2023, we reflect on what we have (or haven't) learned over those four years, then play and discuss clips from these episodes: Record Mirror legend Norman Jopling on first seeing the "Rollin' Stones" in 1963 (December 2021) Writer-photographer Val Wilmer on interviewing Jimi Hendrix in 1967 (May 2024) the Village Voice's Richard Goldstein on not caring if he was "America's first rock critic" (September 2022) Creem veteran Jaan Uhelszki remembering her "almost famous" colleague Lester Bangs (May 2022) Author-filmmaker Nelson George on not reviewing the Brothers Johnson as if they were Bob Dylan (July 2021) Billboard's first rap editor Havelock Nelson on being influenced by Nelson George (March 2025) NPR's Ann Powers on being influenced by Greil Marcus (June 2024) The New Statesman's Kate Mossman on her (not-so) secret passion for jazz fusion (February 2022) "Freak-folk" icon Vashti Bunyan on her love of hymns and carols (April 2022) Vashti's 1970 producer Joe Boyd on producing Kate & Anna McGarrigle and the magic of sibling harmonies (September 2024) and... Island Records mogul Chris Blackwell recalling the al fresco recording of John Martyn's 'Small Hours' (September 2022) After our navel-gazing saunter down memory lane, Mark tells us about the week's new audio interview, in which Amy Linden asks Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel about [the] Fugees' classic 1996 album The Score. Mark then quotes from newly-added RBP library pieces about David Bowie's Diamond Dogs (1974), Tears for Fears (1982) and Jeffrey Lee Pierce (1985) and Jasper wraps things up with thoughts on pieces about System of a Down (2003) and ex-Black Midi man Geordie Greep (2024). In this episode of "Hip Hop What Ifs," hosted by D and 12Kyle, the discussion turns to the question, "What if Lauryn Hill had continued her rap career?" They delve into the impactful yet complex legacy of Lauryn Hill in the hip-hop world. As they explore the trajectory of Hill's career, from her groundbreaking work with the Fugees to her transformative solo album "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill," listeners are invited to consider how Hill's choices might have reshaped the landscape of female rap. The episode navigates through Lauryn Hill's rise in the music industry, touching on key moments like the Fugees' success with their album "The Score," and Hill's departure from music to focus on personal life. With in-depth analysis, the hosts ponder the potential influence Hill could have wielded in contemporary hip-hop, drawing parallels to artists like Foxy Brown, Lil' Kim, and later figures such as Rapsody. They also entertain the idea of Hill making a comeback and what that would mean in today's musical context. Ultimately, this engaging dialogue highlights Hill's enduring influence and the hypothetical shift she could have sparked in women's rap music. Looking for a challenging exercise? (Not for your students, but for you?) Business Expert Michelle Markwart Deveaux takes us through an essential training strategy to help you discover (or rediscover) the "WHY" in your business. What is Institutional Memory? Often informal and intangible, organizational memory constitutes the body of knowledge and know-how an organization has accumulated throughout its history. It is a repertoire of collective knowledge found in an organization's functioning, practices, events, decisions, and interpretation models, which ensures its harmonious and efficient functioning. To this end, title represents essential capital. Why is Institutional Memory important? Intention, intention, intention. Self-awareness. Better decision making. Culture building, brand building **Key takeaway:** More money with less anxiety. About our guest: Michelle Markwart Deveaux uses her background as a performer and director to make business less annoying. As a facilitator, coach, and consultant, she helps those in decision making roles re-discover their generosity and playfulness, while maintaining high standards of integrity, inclusivity, and sustainable business practice.
