Some people keep promises. Some people watch good movies. I did neither this week and let my intrusive thoughts convince me to watch Desert Monster (China, 2022) on Hi-Yah, a self-important monster flick that tries to deny it's B-movie bonnafides. Thankfully, Grady watched a good movie, Oddity (Ireland, 2024) on Shudder, a chilling blend of creepy house and Jewish folklore. We mourn the impromptu passing of Melissa, who was abducted and devoured by flying meatballs. Also, was Little Nicky a good movie or a great movie?

Our exit today has us wanting to live deliciously and commune with the devil. This week we are talking about two films that depict the Prince of Darkness, Lucifer, albeit in different forms. First, we will talk about Bedazzled, a remake of the Dudley Moore comedy and directed by Harold Ramis. Next, we will talk about Little Nicky, starring Adam Sandler. While one is a modern Faust update, the other is looking at the spawn of Satan trying to save the world and his father. Along the way, we talk about previous versions of the Faust legend, SNL sketches, British New Wave, the Golden Gate Bridge, Hugh Grant's scandals, celebrity cameos, Nosferatu, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and of course, Harvey Keitel. In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick and Anthony dive into Little Nicky, the 2000 Adam Sandler comedy about Satan's lovable, underdog son who's sent to Earth to bring back his rebellious brothers. The conversation kicks off with Anthony's obvious enthusiasm for the film, fondly recounting its absurd humor and quirky charm. Nick, however, is less impressed. Right from the start, he admits that Little Nicky doesn't quite hit the mark for him. With its bizarre plot and Sandler's goofy performance, Nick finds the film more awkward than entertaining, but Anthony is quick to defend its cult classic status. As they dig into Sandler's portrayal of Nicky, the two hosts can't help but laugh over the character's distinctive voice, a combination of mumbling and endearing awkwardness that Sandler used throughout the film. Anthony finds it hilarious and memorable, praising Sandler's commitment to the bit. Nick, on the other hand, thinks the voice comes off as a little forced, suggesting it overshadows the character's potential. While they don't quite agree, both hosts acknowledge that Sandler's performance is a love-it-or-hate-it situation that makes Little Nicky a unique entry in his filmography. Moving on to the film's supporting cast, the pair discuss the motley crew of characters, from Mr. Beefy the talking bulldog to Nicky's demonic brothers, and cameos by the likes of Quentin Tarantino. Anthony feels the ensemble cast is one of the film's strong suits, bringing unexpected humor and variety to each scene. Nick, however, feels that many of the characters are one-dimensional and rely heavily on gags that lose their charm after the first viewing. Despite this, he admits there's a certain absurd appeal to the movie's relentless oddness, even if it isn't his taste. In the end, Nick and Anthony agree to disagree on Little Nicky's rewatchability. Anthony argues that the film's surreal humor and oddball characters make it a fun, quirky watch that rewards repeat viewings with hidden jokes and details. Nick, on the other hand, believes it's one of those movies best appreciated once, unless you're a dedicated Sandler fan. Wrapping up, the two acknowledge that Little Nicky isn't for everyone, but for fans of Sandler's boldest comedic choices, it remains a nostalgic, if divisive, trip into his more experimental work. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185431/

Welcome back to another electrifying episode of Metal Massacre! This time, the weirdo with the beardo, Lucian, and the tsar of gnar, Dustin, dive into the thrilling world of metal icons in pop culture. As the spooky season sets in, the duo embarks on a journey to identify characters in movies, TV shows, and video games that carry the torch for the metal community, even in non-metal settings. Lucian and Dustin explore the crossover between horror and metal, discussing iconic characters like Buttercup from the Powerpuff Girls, the stoner metalheads from Little Nicky, and Jeff Johansson from Dead by Daylight. They delve into the character of Eddie from Stranger Things, whose epic guitar solo in the Upside Down is hailed as one of the most metal moments in TV history. The conversation also touches on Art the Clown from the Terrifier series, celebrated for his gruesome and elaborate kills that resonate with the metal ethos. As they share their lists, Dustin reveals his picks, including Mondo Gecko from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Otto the bus driver from The Simpsons, emphasizing the unexpected places where metal thrives. The duo reminisces about iconic duos like Bill and Ted, Beavis and Butthead, and Wayne and Garth from Wayne's World, all of whom embody the spirit of metal in their unique ways. The episode takes an exciting turn with an interview featuring the up-and-coming band Chained Saint from South Florida. Lucian sits down with the entire band to discuss their influences, the challenges of creating a unique sound in a saturated metal scene, and their upcoming LP, "Blindside." The band shares their journey from garage jams to working with industry legends, highlighting their blend of 80s thrash and modern brutality. Whether you're a metalhead, a fan of pop culture, or curious about the intersection of metal and media, this episode is packed with insights, laughs, and a celebration of metal's pervasive spirit. Does it deserve all the hate it gets or is it an underrated (not uncut) gem? We got takes! Oh and we totally determine which is the actual best Sandler movie of all time. Enjoy!
It's been a long journey but we're finally wrapping up this long series with a movie from the year 2000. And to end this epic journey, we had to pick a film worthy of everything that has come before. To do this, we looked at all the movies that came out in 2000... Carefully considered all the hits... And gave up, it was too hard. We picked Adam Sandler's 'Little Nicky' because it was funny.Join our Patreon for our bonus episodes! https://www.patreon.com/oldiebutagoodiepodFollow the show!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oldiebutagoodiepod/Facebook: https://fb.me/oldiebutagoodiepodPodcast Platforms: https://linktr.ee/oldiebutagoodiepodGot feedback? In the second episode of this multi-part series, we cover Angelo Bruno, Boss of the Philadelphia Mafia during the "Golden Age" of the Philadelphia Cosa Nostra from the years 1960-1969. We recap Bruno's ascension to Boss of the Philly Mob during 1959 when a dispute between himself and Acting Boss Antonio "Mr. Mig" Pollina, along with support from Bruno's good friend Carlo Gambino, resulting in Bruno taking the top chair in the Philadelphia underworld and joining The Commission as the first boss from Philadelphia to do so. From there, we also recap Bruno's underworld dealings leading up to his time as boss and his involvement as the top numbers man in Philadelphia during the 1950's and 1960's, as well as his illegitimate and legitimate business interests in several vending companies, the Maggio Cheese Company, and even companies down in Florida as well as an amusement park in the Dominican Republic. In the early 1960's, we cover the hierarchy of the family as well as a 1962 dispute between Bruno and his Underboss, Ignazio Denaro, which led to a major Commission beef. We also cover various arrests throughout the 1960's, some of which Bruno handled with great ease, and an extortion case from 1963 that caused Bruno to go on the lam to Italy and landed his trusted advisor Phil Testa in jail for over a year in the early 1960's. Once Bruno deals with the 1963 extortion case, which was taking place at the same time as the infamous Valachi Hearings, we walk you through the key members of the Philadelphia underworld and the various goings-on in the mid-to-late 1960's, including the death of Felix "Skinny Razor" DeTullio and the rise in Atlantic City of Nicodemo "Little Nicky" Scarfo. Bruno closes out the 1960's hitting his stride in the Philly underworld, batting away cases with ease as the Bruno Crime Family significantly expands it's influence and wealth. By the end of the decade, Angel Bruno is ranked as one of the Top 6 Costa Nostra bosses nationally by a Justice Department report. We cover all of this, with a lot of details and amazing stories in between. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. Frank asks Kathryn if we are still in the “off-season” for opera companies. Frank's wife Jere asked him to donate some of her old clothes to the Ladies of Charity Thrift Store on Baxter Avenue (https://www.ladiesofcharityknox.org/). While he was there, he picked up fifteen neckties to wear while hosting Tennessee Scholars' Bowl on East Tennessee PBS or when emceeing an event. At his last teeth cleaning, Frank found out that his dentist was not in his new insurance network and he had to pay the full rate for a cleaning and x-rays. When he called to make an appointment with a new dentist, he was offered an appointment at 2:30 p.m., which is the best dad joke ever. Frank's wife joked that he would search for an attractive blonde dentist, based on his choice of dermatologist. Kathryn is thinking of dying her hair blonde again. In 2018, she went from bleach blonde to black hair in order to sing Tosca with the Helena Symphony. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. You can also get several of Sam Venable's books, signed by the author and the new book by former UT counsel Ron Leadbetter. Marble City Opera used to schedule one mainstage performance in the Fall, one in the Winter, and one in the Spring but this season's shows will be The Christmas Spider on January 6, 2024; The Doctor and the Devils on June 6 and 8, 2024; and Puccini's Il Tabarro on a party barge on June 20, 2024. Season tickets are on sale now at https://www.marblecityopera.com/events/seasonticket Frank and Jere were walking from a parking garage to a birthday party for Alex and Jenny Stokes in a downtown bar. Frank tried to swallow an Aleve gel-cap without water but it began dissolving in his mouth. Frank recalls that he knew some ballet dancers who used to pop the capsules and rub the gel on their toes. Kathryn is headed back to Baton Rouge. She is concerned about recent wildfires and the possibility of hurricanes in Louisiana. Frank recalls that the owners of Little Nicky's New York Pizza in Solway lost their Florida restaurant in a hurricane. Kathryn and her husband James once got stuck in a Florida hurricane. Frank went to a reception after Mass at which representatives of the various ministries recruit new members. Frank was speaking with the members of the Haiti Outreach Program because he will emcee their annual fundraising dinner on September 22, 2023. Admission is free but you are asked to RSVP at https://haitioutreachprogram.org/ Frank was recognized by a member of the group that holds an annual fishing trip called the Fly Fishers of Men Retreat. The man asked if Frank was the host of Tennessee Scholars Bowl. Frank returned the favor by recognizing the man as the guy who saved the day when a teenager's hair caught fire at the Easter Vigil in 2022 as described in episode 0043, “Hair on Fire” https://youtu.be/m4hsynpCJGM Kathryn offers to sing a special aria when we finally surpass 1,000 subscribers on YouTube. Blake Clark is a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served as a first lieutenant in the United States Army with the 5th Infantry Division.[2][3] During his time in the army, Clark was also a member of the 101st Airborne Division known as the "Screaming Eagles." Blake has been cast in numerous Adam Sandler films including The Waterboy, Little Nicky, Mr. Deeds, Eight Crazy Nights, 50 First Dates, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, Bedtime Stories, Grown Ups, and That's My Boy. He has also made guest appearances in numerous television series, including Home Improvement, Boy Meets World, The Jamie Foxx Show, The Drew Carey Show, Girl Meets World, and Community. He was also Fred the chauffeur in Remington Steele. Starting with Toy Story 3, Clark has voiced Slinky Dog in the Toy Story franchise, in place of his close friend Jim Varney, Slinky's original voice actor in the first two films, who died of lung cancer. When Toy Story 3 was still in production after Varney had died, Pixar searched for someone who sounded like Varney and fortunately found Clark, who "very much captures the essence and spirit of Slinky Dog's character. Blake is a very funny guy and still to date, has the longest applause break as a comic on the Tonight Show. (Johnny Carson era)

“Introducing Billy Bradley" A veteran of commercials, movies and television while still only in his 30s, Michael Charles Roman is one of those timeless actors. He's got the punchline prowess of everyone from Michael J. Fox to Jason Bateman, the comedic instincts of Martin Short and the theatrical range that could find him doing period pieces to contemporary dramas. Roman was in films like Keeping The Faith with Ed Norton and Ben Stiller, Little Nicky with Adam Sandler and Rob Burnett's We Made This Movie. When it comes to TV, you've seen him on Bones, The Good Wife,Veronica Mars, Ground Floor, 2 Broke Girls, Evil, Frequency, and most recently, NetFlix's Grace and Frankie with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The guy can do it all. And just to test that idea, he decided to do it all on his first short film Introducing Billy Bradley. The film is a semi-autobiographical short written, directed and produced by Roman, who also stars alongside his former Grace and Frankie scene partner Martin Sheen (The West Wing, Apocalypse Now). Introducing Billy Bradley follows a down-on-his-luck actor who finds himself at a critical crossroads: save his life or salvage what's left of his floundering career. The movie also stars Alexandra Metz (CW's Frequency), Arjay Smith (ABC's The Rookie, TNT's Perception) and Garrett Morris (CBS's 2 Broke Girls, Saturday Night Live). Billy Bradley does what the best short films do—leave you both satisfied and wanting more. Not an easy balance, but in his directional debut, Roman does just that. It's a brilliant film that in just 14 minutes, manages to do what some films take hours to attempt to do. Hailed as the “Superman: Dawn of Justice” of its day, our film this week was the first to unite three separate cinematic universes in one story-telling masterpiece. Never before, and to the day of this being written never again since, has a film DARED to invite the “City of Angels” AND the “Little Nicky” narrative universes into its OWN overarching cinematic superuniverse. Really incredible stuff. The film, of course, is 1999's “Notting Hill.” Part of our “Hugh Grant's Vernal Dance” celebration. It's the 50th episode. That's right, folks, 50. Half of 100. In simplified math, that is still 50 over 1. Cannonball! The water is deep and so is the well of Michael's vocabulary. Corkscrew! Here comes the Creepy Man (imagine the Boogeyman if conceptualized by a man that fully believes in the power of farts and their medicinal use (also, his name is Timothy)). Jackknife! Max went to Cincinnati. Out flowed the chili and in flowed Michael's understanding of the Spanish language. 30 Days or Less: That's the Michael Rowland guarantee (and you can bank that in your Memory Palace). Flying Squirrel! Entourage: The Show: The Experience (can you say "We're making a movie!?!"). Michael is taking. trip to explore South America. With any luck, he'll discover Medellin like Stanley Tucci discovered Italy. High Dive! We're excavating Mormonism- bring on the gold plates and fetch my magic underwear because these churches are beautiful! Bellyflop! The fellas are exploring some of their past interviews to recap some of our best talks over the last 50 episodes. Here's to 50 more episodes and 50 more years of kissing your friends on the lips if they want to.Also, Little Nicky stopped by"Don't worry, baby. To wrap up Adam Sandler Month, we are talking 2000's Little Nicky!
This week Mea Culpa welcomes the legendary actor, comedian, director, and producer Henry Winkler. Best known for his iconic turn as “The Fonze” on Happy Days and more recently for his Emmy-nominated role on the hit comedy “Barry”, playing beloved acting teacher Gene Cousineau. And before that, he was a staple on “Arrested Development”, “Hank Zipzer” and Winkler even appeared as himself on “Bojack Horseman”. All told, Winkler's accolades include a Primetime Emmy, two Daytime Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Critics Choice Award. Not bad. He's a Yale “School of Drama” Grad and his acting career spans 6 decades. He has performed in both dramatic and comedic roles, in film television, and on stage. Though one might say he is the quintessential character actor. He's done several pictures with his buddy Adam Sandler including, “Little Nicky” and “Don't Mess with the Zohan” and has continued to collaborate with his “Happy Day”s cohort, Ron Howard. Journalist Michael Schneider said recently, that "the rumors are true," Winkler is "one of the nicest, most genuine men in all of Hollywood.” Michael and Henry Winkler talk about their family life, their careers, and of course politics.
