It's impossible to get a full picture of a country as big and diverse as Canada, but audio journalist Kasia Mychajlowycz set out on a road trip to find as many people as she could to ask: what's the most important issue to you in this election season, and why? What people answered ranged through topics like affordability, healthcare, trust in government, reconciliation, tariffs and more. But in over 35 interviews in a dozen places over seven provinces, people went beyond politics, retelling the joys, challenges and tragedies that make up all our lives. CORRECTION: An older version of this episode misidentified Al Porter.Listen to the first installment East to West: voices in Atlantic Canada ahead of the election Questions? Comments? Ideas? How does your childhood shape you as an adult and impact your career choices? That's the theme of a new GoLoud podcast hosted by comedians Karl Spain and Tony Kelly, and its also what we chat about on this episode of The Mario Rosenstock Podcast. You might remember Tony from previous episodes of this podcast – he's the Waterford man that dreamt of making a movie and after a lot of hard work, grit and determination, release a feature film called The Hurler, which has been in cinemas nationwide and also features on Amazon Prime!Karl Spain of course is one of Ireland's best-known comedians, but maybe what you're not so familiar with is his very successful career as a writer for other comedians – he has crafted gags for performers like Kevin Bridges and Al Porter and many others.I was one of the first guests on their new podcast and just after we recorded that, I turned the tables on them, and learnt about the childhood experiences that shaped them and led them to become comedians.COMEDY – It has been a tough week for Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy, who now may face a vote of confidence in the Dail. And it turns out there are a few well-known people waiting in the long grass in case she doesn't – and they've been leaving messages on the Mario Rosenstock Podcast hotline outlining their suitability for the role.Produced by Patrick Haughey of AudioBrand

Al Porter was everywhere......TV, Radio, Newspapers, Pantos and filling theaters all over Ireland until one day when it all came to a grinding halt. In a very honest and open conversation, Al has said alcohol played a large role in his behavior in 2017 when he was accused of inappropriately touching men, leading to a complete end to his career overnight. The comedian, who is now sober for over three years, said he had a sense that the wheels were coming off and that he was far too immature for the speed of his rise to fame. After some very dark days, feeling suicidal and spending time in hospital, he accepts that people had every right to call him out. Whilst he didn't think he was being a bad person at the time, Al has since learned that his actions were inappropriate. After working on himself for 6 years, Al never wants to repeat the past and as he says himself, he has the rest of his life to live as a good person. Al admitted that he is trying to make amends with people over time, and has written letters to some, but some people didn't want them. This is a very raw and difficult conversation. Al tells us in great detail every thought and emotion he was feeling at the time and also explains all the work he has done over the last 6 years to become a better person. Al says "no matter how bad things are in your life, it's never too late to turn things around and it's never too late to reach out for help" Hosted on Acast. This chat with Al Porter was genuinely one of the most enjoyable conversations I have had on this podcast series to date. Not only is Al totally hilarious, he is also deeply intelligent, self aware, and has a very powerful personal story to tell. He has just come out the other side of an incredibly difficult few years where he was, by his own doing, completely out of the public eye, having been very much in it for many years. But now he's back on tour, selling out venues again, and he joined me in studio to share his story and tell me about how it feels to be back in action. This is part two of that conversation, and just like part 1, we have a real treat in store for you. For details about Al's new tour, check out alporter.ie COMEDY – Bruce Springsteen is back again and tickets are pretty hefty! Produced by Patrick Haughey, AudioBrand
A few years ago Al Porter was one of Ireland's most rapidly rising stars in the entertainment world. He had become the youngest headliner in Vicar Street's history at 21, his award-winning stand up was receiving rave reviews from critics, he had his own TV and radio shows, and big plans in motion for the USA. And then, as he says himself, it “all fell apart”. For reasons that we cover in this episode, Al suddenly stepped back from all of his public work and spent the next few years living at home, eating and drinking heavily, and mentally not in a good place. But now, after several years of self-reflection and analysis, and some serious work on himself to get sober, Al is back. He's selling out venues with his new stand up show, supporting great comedians like Reginald D Hunter, and he's off the booze and looking and feeling great. We met up in the studio earlier this week and over the course of almost two hours, Al told me the full story about the last few years he has spent out of the public eye and how he has got himself back on track. This is part 1 of that conversation. In the second episode of the series, Jarlath is joined on stage at Electric Picnic by Mark O'Halloran, Sinead O'Carroll and Nadine O'Regan to debate whether men's attitudes have changed in Ireland in the last year and what the place of forgiveness is in the Me Too movement. The panel call into question when Al Porter should get to come back (40:00), the true outcome of the rugby rape trial (20:00) and whether or not women share just as much as men do in their own 'locker-room talk' (29:00). From the questioning of whether or not men are now being more cautious rather than respectful (11:00) to why 'being woke' is a bullshit term (13:00), the horrifying groping culture which is as prevalent as ever (17:00) and much much more, this conversation is yet another vital conversation in the series. #MeToo and #Timesup: Speaking Out – At Your Own Pace. On this week’s Sparking Change, we look at the growing impact of the #MeToo movement, and why survivors of abuse of power can find it difficult to speak out. In her editorial, Dil discusses the new #timesup campaign, and looks to some words of wisdom from Oprah Winfrey’s Golden Globes speech – get ready to feel empowered! We are joined by writer, activist and musician Eoin O’Faogain (5:10), who was one of the 5 men to speak out against comedian Al Porter, as he shares his story in audio for the first time with Dil, and discusses sexual assault culture in Ireland. Later, we are joined by a panel of therapists from Insight Matters (43:36), who discuss the center's new #IBelieveYou support group, as special-guest baby Xavier reminds us of the importance of letting our feelings out! Our panelists explain how the group is a safe space, where survivors of bullying, sexual assault and harassment, and abuse of power in the media industry can seek help and understanding, and reassure listeners that group therapy need not be intimidating.
Episode 20 discusses the onslaught of sexual harassment and sexual assault allegations in recent months that has affected some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, in politics and in the news media. I take an in-depth look at the allegations of sexual impropriety levelled against high profiled figures in the entertainment industry such as Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K. and Kevin Spacey. I examine the allegations of sexual misconduct put forth against politicians such as Democratic Senator Al Franken and Senate Republican candidate Roy Moore. I address the accusations of sexual impropriety directed at prominent journalists such as Matt Lauer and Charlie Rose. I also consider the allegations of sexual misconduct against one of Ireland's own, comedian and TV / radio personality Al Porter.
