This is a repost as my tribute to Sean Hughes nearly thirty years after we did the original interview - which was done for a Christmas issue of a magazine in Ireland. It's been five years since Sean died, and I wanted, at Christmas 2017, to mark that event by including this programme in my radio series The Joe Jackosn Tapes Revisited. However, I was asked not to broadcast it as RTE Radio 1 had other plans to "mark his passing." If they did, I never heard that show. But here, you can hear this one. Let's not forget our old heroes - especially those who blessed us with laughter.

"Cathal Coughlan Remembered: Somewhere Between Joe Gould And Lee Mavers" “The supreme question about a work of art,” James Joyce once wrote, "is out of how deep a life does it spring.” If you tried to plumb the fathoms for a measurable reading of the life of Cathal Coughlan—well, the depth finder would crack right in half. Coughaln's life has been a rich and textured affair and his talent is vast and incomprehensibly majestic. With his band Microdisney, The Cork -born musician put out several of the most affecting albums ever made. Efforts like The Clock Comes Down the Stairs in 1985 or the following year's Crooked Mile, are front to back classics. After he and his bandmate Sean O-Hagan dissolved Microdisney and O-Hagan went on to form the High Llamas, Coughlan fired up the Fatima Mansions—an aggressive, fiery and angular outfit, that played synth-laced alternative rock that churned away with grinding and brutal beauty. Viva Dead Ponies and Lost In The Former West are two personal favorites, but the fact is, I love every album in their discography. Over the course of his career Coughlan put out a series of brilliant solo albums, collaborated with the likes of comic Sean Hughes and British singer/songwriter Luke Haines, scored movies like The Last Bus Home and The Mapmaker, toured with U2, appeared onstage in a contemporary opera, and reformed Microdisney for a brief series of triumphant shows. His new album Song of Co-Aklan is a work of startling beauty and precision. Imbued with poetic invention and finesse, haunting melodies, riveting ballads and an unmistakable wisdom and pop grace, Coughlan has never sounded better. This is a deep and focused conversation that can't be encapsulated in a sentence or two—you just have to listen. But we do touch on Lee Mavers, friendship, Sting, the legend of Joe Gould, the vulnerability of solo shows and staying prolific during lockdown.

I welcome on my good friend Sean Hughes on episode 38. Sean & I started our careers around the same time in the late 2000s. He was the very first agent to join TOWN Real Estate, a firm that unfortunately closed its doors back in 2018. Before Compass was even an idea, Town at the time, was home to nearly 600 agents & WAS the quintessential Manhattan brokerage: bold, loud, growth-obsessed, and provocative.  Sean touches on the early days of TOWN, leading up to its final hours.  A New Jersey native, we got back to his roots growing up poor, his struggles in school, all the way up to the present day where he represents deals in Manhattan, & along with his development project in New Jersey.

Sean Hughes, tragically, died at the age of only 51 in October 2017. I made this radio show within days for my series The Joe Jackson Tapes Revisited, on RTE Radio 1. It was meant to be broadcast around the time of the year it had originally been recorded, in 1993, at Christmas. I thought that would be fitting. Unfortunately, RTE asked me not to broadcast the show - despite the fact that it was heavily promoted and many people were looking forward to it - because they had, I was told "another tribute ready to be broadcast in the new year.". If it was broadcast, I missed it. So, three years later close enough to Christmas, I am delighted to finally make the show available as part of The Joe Jackson Interviews series

When the form was first introduced in 2005 it proved controversial as it asked for details of audience ethnicity and, although this wasamended later, critics still say the form is discriminatory because grime and urban music artists are disproportionately affected.
