A Fortunate Son: And Other Stories by Daniel J. DonoghueA Fortunate Son: and Other Stories is a collection of stories written across decades of Daniel J. Donoghue's life-chronicling his journey from youth to the present day. As he has grown, so too has his writing, shaped by the challenges and transformations of life itself. These slice-of-life narratives capture both the deeply personal and the universally human: love and loss, desire and regret, the weight of family, the scars of military life, and the quiet battles with mental illness. With unflinching honesty and lyrical prose, Donoghue explores the raw edges of experience-where tenderness and turmoil coexist. From the dim glow of roadside bars to the silent ache of suburban mornings, no subject is too intimate or taboo. Painted with empathy and precision, these stories invite readers to confront the fragile beauty and painful truths of being human, and to see the shifting colors of their own lives reflected in the work.Born in New York City and raised in northern New Jersey. Daniel has lived a life as varied as the stories he writes. After a colorful youth, he served in the US Navy, the Foreign Service and spent 20 years in the technology worldHe's the author of over 30 short stories, a novel “Gold in the Furnace”, a screenplay based on the novel and a play. He lives and writes in Santa Fe, NMhttps://www.amazon.com/Fortunate-Son-Other-Stories/dp/B0FTTKTLMZ/ref=monarch_sidesheet_titlehttps://www.danieldonoghuebooks.com/https://www.ecpublishingllc.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/121125ddec.mp3

Happy New Liturgical Year! to all our listeners on C&SI as we enter into the new liturgical year with this weekend being the first Sunday of Advent. On this weeks podcast/radio programme the C&SI team is joined by Fr Neil Xavier O'Donoghue, Executive Secretary for Liturgy of the Irish Catholic's Bishop Conference to discuss the up coming changes in the lectionary for the Irish Church and how Catholics in Ireland will hear the proclamation of the Word of God. In part one as always we have our run through the up coming liturgical odds and ends including the saints of the week as well as some notices and reminders about Advent retreats. In part three we have our weekly reflection on the Sunday gospel and this week we begin our journey with Matthew through the new liturgical year.Preparing a new lectionary for the Irish ChurchIn 2011 the global English speaking community got a new translation of the Roman Missal including all the parts and prayers of the Mass. On this weeks podcast Fr Neil O'Donoghue joins us to explain the next change that Irish Catholics will experience in how we celebrate our liturgies with the work in progress on preparing a new lectionary - aka the book of the readings of Scripture used in our public liturgies. For over fifty years, parishes and communities across the island of Ireland, Australia and New Zealand have listened to the scripture readings proclaimed in church from the same translations which are given in the Lectionary for Mass which are taken from the Jerusalem Bible. Many of these books are now in a poor state and in need of replacing. In 2021 the bishops recognised that this was an opportunity for a new edition of the Lectionary, taking advantage of a revised translation of the readings, which is both accessible and faithful to the evolving nuances of the English language and contemporary biblical scholarship. For Ireland, the Revised New Jerusalem Bible was chosen as the text for the Lectionary. This translation recognises the need for the text to be proclaimed in the liturgy, to be faithful to the original biblical texts and it is sensitive to inclusivity. For the psalms in the Lectionary, the Abbey Psalms and Canticles will be used. This is a sympathetic revision of the familiar Grail Psalter and the revised text has already been adopted in several English-speaking countries. It is a joint project with the church in Australia and New Zealand but it will mean that our readings in Ireland are going to sound slightly different to our nearest neighbours in the UK. Our 2024 Annual Social Policy Conference was on the theme of ' Managing Change to Build a Just Society'. Ireland is going through several major transitions, each of which is only going to deepen with time. While much is changing, many of the problems facing our society are long-standing: inequality, poverty, and under-investment in our social infrastructure remain major challenges. Although the economy in Ireland has experienced record growth since the pandemic, infrastructure and services in areas such as housing, healthcare and public transport are far below the levels and standards that would be expected in a normally functioning society. Matthew Donoghue is an Assistant Professor of Social Policy, in the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, University College Dublin. Matthew presented his paper at our 2024 Annual Social Policy Conference. All videos, papers and presentations for the 2024 Annual Social Policy conference are available for download HERE.
34 people including 15 children living in the Loreto Chapel estate in Killarney face homelessness as their landlord, Cypriot property company, Xerico Ltd, which owns 14 houses there, has begun a mass eviction process. The evictions are entirely legal, with no suggestion by the tenants that the landlords have done anything illegal. Killarney Cllr John O’Donoghue, of the Kerry Independent Alliance, and Conor Sheehan, Labour Party spokesperson on housing, think more needs to be done to protect renters from eviction.

Today's episode features Gabe Donoghue and Jas Mohmood, the co-founders of The Bohemian Bespoke, a label that blends traditional tailoring methods with a fresh, modern point of view. In this conversation, Gabe and Jas share how they've built a creative partnership rooted in craftsmanship, individuality, and a desire to make bespoke tailoring feel more personal and expressive. We explore how they transformed their shared passion into a label that reimagines what bespoke tailoring can be. While rooted in time honoured techniques, their work breaks away from convention blending classic construction with bold, contemporary expression. They talk about the early challenges of launching The Bohemian Bespoke, the creative risks that defined their style, and their mission to make tailoring more artistic, culturally relevant, and reflective of identity. This episode offers a unique look into the evolution of bespoke through a modern lens where the rules are respected but never followed blindly.
Following the breakdown of her long-term relationship in 2021, Orla Donoghue became a single parent to her then one-year-old son, Rory. The transition, however, was far from easy. As a new mother, she grappled with feelings of isolation, shame and uncertainty and despite the fact that one in five households in Ireland are single parent families, she also found the experience deeply isolating. However, it was this difficult experience that ultimately led her to set up Solas Coaching, a support space dedicated to helping other single parents. In today's episode, Donoghue talks to Róisín Ingle about finding her footing as a solo parent, the importance of asking for help and why she's passionate about supporting others in difficult times. This week on Menomorphosis, I'm joined by hypnotherapist Rebecca Donoghue for a powerful, honest conversation about one of the most emotionally charged topics right now: weight loss jabs — and the stories our bodies carry through midlife. This isn't about shame, and it's definitely not about blame. It's about awareness. Because the truth is — we don't reach for food or quick fixes because we're weak. We reach for them because a part of us is trying to feel safe, and most of us were never taught how to meet that need without self-abandoning in the process. In this episode, we explore:✨Why weight loss jabs might treat a symptom - but never rewire emotional eatingThe key question to ask if you keep repeating the same food and self-care patternsHow to untangle your identity from your appearance, without losing your ambitionThe deeper emotional and energetic drivers behind the urge to control your bodyWhat actually helps change stick — and why your ‘why' matters more than any toolWhether you've tried the jab, judged the jab, or feel stuck between extremes — this episode brings nuance, clarity, and compassion to a topic most people oversimplify. To download Rebecca's FREE guide 'It's not your fault' go to https://linktr.ee/iamrebeccadonoghueOr https://www.instagram.com/iamrebeccadonoghue/ Download The Breath Check-Up - your FREE guide to understanding how well you're breathing right now. This thrill ride of an audiobook tells the many stories of those onboard Train 721, which crashed in Montparnasse station in October 1895. AudioFile's Alan Minskoff and host Jo Reed discuss narrator Justin Avoth, who performs the drama at a good pace and keeps the story moving. Donoghue brings her plotting skills, eloquent style, and eye for social mores to the cast of fictional people who are on the train. Tension mounts as a young anarchist carries a homemade bomb, a baby is born, and, inexorably, the train plows into the station. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick takes a deep dive into one of the most chaotic and heavily criticized seasons in Saturday Night Live history: Season 20, also known as The Bad Boys Club Season. Following the departure of core cast members like Phil Hartman, Rob Schneider, and Julia Sweeney, the show found itself leaning hard into the rowdy, often crude humor of Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and David Spade—while sidelining much of the female cast, including Janine Garofalo, who left midway through the season. The cast was bloated, the writing uneven, and the press relentless. Nick walks through the entire season with behind-the-scenes stories, including how Jeff Daniels nearly suffered a serious makeup mishap, why Dan Aykroyd unofficially hosted instead of the listed John Goodman, and how the writers struggled with brilliant hosts like Bob Newhart, John Turturro, David Hyde Pierce, and Courtney Cox—while completely losing control during hosting gigs by George Foreman and Deion Sanders. Despite its rough reputation, the season had its moments: Norm Macdonald took over the Weekend Update desk, Molly Shannon made a strong debut halfway through, and both Damon Wayans and Dana Carvey returned to deliver some much-needed highlights. You'll also hear Stuart Smalley hilariously scolding the public for ignoring his movie, and Bill Murray delivering a moving tribute to the late Michael O'Donoghue. It's a full look at one of SNL's messiest, most fascinating seasons—flawed, but unforgettable. [Ep 122]

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick welcomes film expert, exhibitor, and historian Mike Kerz to the podcast to talk about his lifelong love for Saturday Night Live—a passion that began in his teen years when he would record each episode's audio with a portable tape recorder. As the co-creator of the Flashback Weekend Horror Convention and co-owner of The Midway Drive-In in Dixon, Illinois, Mike shares how SNL influenced both his sense of humor and his professional ventures. They count down Mike's 5 Favorite SNL Sketches of All Time, highlighting iconic performances from Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, and the darkly brilliant Michael O'Donoghue, whose work Mike especially admires. The conversation also includes a deep dive into what many consider to be the greatest SNL sketch ever: The Last Voyage of the Star Trek Enterprise—a true classic that gets the attention and appreciation it deserves. Today on the show, we hear from authors who were inspired by history in wildly different ways. First, when Emma Donoghue encountered a famous photo of the 1895 Montparnasse derailment, she says she couldn't believe no one had written a novel about it. Donoghue's The Paris Express imagines what life was like for passengers on the old-fashioned steam locomotive. In today's episode, she talks with NPR's Steve Inskeep about the extensive historical research she conducted in order to write the book. Then, Bob the Drag Queen has called Harriet Tubman "the first Black superhero." In Bob's debut novel Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert, Tubman returns to continue her work as an abolitionist through hip-hop. In today's episode, Bob speaks with NPR's Ayesha Rascoe about the idea of freedom, Tubman's military service, and a recent appearance on The Traitors. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
