We're in the presence of royalty this week, it's award winning actress (and phenomenal Queen Elizabeth II) Claire Foy! Mum really pulled out all the stops to make the most regal of afternoon teas for our star of 'The Crown' - homemade madeleines, mini trifles and even coronation chicken sandwiches. Claire is fresh from making her latest film 'H is for Hawk' and we heard all about the training process she went through to become a Goshawk handler. We also discover Claire is a sucker for a dessert, would love to star in Six The Musical, is always surprised when actors want to work with her, loves a Cosmo, she suffered for years with stomach parasites, loved working with Brendan Gleeson, and we discover her dream meal is her mums special home made spag bol, which has been recreated by her all over the world perfectly! Claire's new film 'H is for Hawk' is out in cinemas now, and it's beautiful. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Puntata a cura di Jacopo Bulgarini d'Elci e Livio Pacella.Mr. James Cameron-Wilson can't recall another week where the top six UK films are all holdovers, with The Housemaid returning to #1. #9 is the ironically-titled Mercy with Chris Pratt a man who has 90 minutes to convince an AI judge that he didn't kill his wife. Set in real time, it is mechanical but James was drawn in by its moral arguments. #13 is the adaptation of best-seller H is for Hawk with a brilliant Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson. It is a beautifully-crafted film but doesn't have a strong storyline or conflict. While not bored, James did get impatient at times. On Netflix is the Taiwanese-set Left-Handed Girl, written by Anora's Sean Baker. The tale of a mother and two daughters moving to Taipei is filmed entirely on an iphone. With great performances, this guerilla style of filmmaking gives it an immediacy and the movie is a real gem. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Philippa Lowthorpe, the writer-director behind H is For Hawk, and the film's star, Claire Foy, join Anna Smith to discuss the moving adaptation of Helen Macdonald's hit memoir, co-starring Brendan Gleeson, Denise Gough, Lindsay Duncan and Sam Spruell. Philippa speaks frankly to Anna about the film's poetic embodiment of the experience of grief, which produces a story that is both powerful and inspiring. Claire and Philippa discuss the process of collaboration, and consider how the on-set dynamics allowed for an element of freedom in Claire's performance. Claire's embodiment of Helen is represented beautifully by Philippa, whose documentary background informed her process of capturing the moment. No film made with live, wild animals is without its challenges, and Claire and Philippa speak to Anna about the incredible experience of working with hawks on set, Claire's own personal reflections of working with them, and the intense, ethical falconry techniques and training involved. Finally, Philippa and Claire discuss bringing the role of Helen to life in all her messy complexity with the support of the film's producer Dede Gardner. This episode is in partnership with Lionsgate. H is For Hawk is in select UK cinemas on 23 January. Philippa Lowthorpe has also appeared on episodes 28 and 145 of Girls On Film, when she attended the Girls On Film Awards. It's the most inanimate time of the year! Kicking off our new Anthology series - Movies Set at Christmas, That Aren't Christmas Movies - the boys revisit one of their all-time favourites: In Bruges (2008). Tommy's been watching Diddy: The Reckoning (it's… a lot), while DL's juggling The Wheel of Time: Book 2 andTrue Grit the OG, both highly recommended. Then it's time to check into Belgium's darkest fairy tale, where the snow is festive, but the mood is not.Timecodes:(00:00) Intro(06:50) What Have You Been Up To?(20:50) MAIN TOPIC: In Bruges (2013)(22:00) Stupid Plot Summary(25:40) Plot(29:30) One human, the rest are Muppets?(30:38) Acclaim vs Success(40:40) Characters(45:30) Direction(50:31) Four Oscar Nominees...(51:53) TRIVIA: Fake or Not Fake?(57:17) Miscellaneous Notes(59:19) Tones & Themes(1:03:35) 3 Best & 3 Worst(1:08:17) Critical Reception(1:08:26) Better or Worse than Aquaman (2018)?(1:09:17) Better or Worse than Aquaman (2018)?(1:10:01) Trivia True or False(1:14:09) Wrapping UpMain Topic:In Bruges is Martin McDonagh's pitch-black comedy about guilt, purgatory, and accidentally kicking a dwarf. Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson shine as two hitmen laying low after a job gone wrong, while Ralph Fiennes turns up to scream about principles. It's foul-mouthed, funny, and somehow heartfelt, like Home Alone if Kevin had PTSD and a Browning. DL calls it a masterpiece. Tommy would probably fight someone over that opinion. Everyone agrees: this is not a Christmas movie—but it kind of is.Is In Bruges the best anti-Christmas Christmas movie ever made? Let us know at thepodcastassemble@gmail.com or hit us up on socials. Episode 105: The Weir by Conor McPherson Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Conor McPherson Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. The curtain rises on a small rural pub in northwest Ireland. A few of the regulars have dropped in for company and bit of the craic. This is the simple premise of Conor McPherson's breakthrough, internationally successful play, The Weir. The play is a quiet, yet mesmerising piece of drama that consists of nothing more than a handful of people coming together and telling a few stories. Stories which reveal not only personal anxieties, regret and grief on the part of its characters, but which, in the telling, draw us into a collective experience of the mystery of being alive. The Weir premiered in a tiny space at the Royal Court Upstairs in July 1997. It has since been performed all over the world, and as we recorded this episode a new production was playing in London's West End, directed by the author himself and starring Brendan Gleeson as Jack. I'm delighted to be able to talk with Conor himself about his magical play.
We close out our holiday run It's Christmas and the Boys Are Sad with Martin McDonagh's In Bruges, a film that balances brutal violence, pitch-black comedy, and unexpected tenderness against a fairy-tale Christmas backdrop. Phil & Emily joined by writers and podcasters Clay Keller and Alan Sepinwall to unpack why this movie has only grown more beloved and more emotionally complicated over time. The conversation dives into Colin Farrell's career-defining performance, Brendan Gleeson's quiet moral gravity, and Ralph Fiennes' volcanic late-movie entrance. They explore McDonagh's dialogue rhythms, the film's strange tonal alchemy, and how Bruges itself becomes a purgatorial space beautiful, frozen in time, and quietly judgmental. Christmas lights, medieval towers, and European pageantry all heighten the sense that these characters are stuck between punishment and absolution. They also discuss the movie's reputation shift from cult hit to modern classic, its placement within McDonagh's broader body of work, and why In Bruges may be the most emotionally honest entry in the “sad men at Christmas” cinematic canon. Along the way, the group touches on Carter Burwell's melancholic score, the film's theatrical release context, and the way humor is used as both shield and confession.Whether you first saw In Bruges in theaters or came to it years later through word of mouth, this episode examines why the film still hits so hard and why it remains one of the defining dark comedies of the 2000s. Send us a textThe fourth trip to Hogwarts should feel bigger, bolder, and a little bit dangerous... and that's exactly where our conversation goes. We crack open Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to ask why the book's expansive scope soars while the movie's world-building sometimes skims. Think missing Quidditch World Cup spectacle, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it introduction to Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, and a Yule Ball that reveals more about teenage insecurity than the film gives it time to process. When the story grows up, not every scene survives the squeeze. We dig into character choices that define the adaptation. Brendan Gleeson's Mad‑Eye Moody is a masterclass in look and presence, but the Barty Crouch Jr. twist sharpens every “helpful” gesture into manipulation on rewatch. Dumbledore's famously calm question turns confrontational on screen, shifting the headmaster's essence in ways later films quietly undo. Ron's jealousy lands as one note, while Neville finally gets time to shine, especially when the Cruciatus demonstration brushes against the truth of his parents. The Pensieve earns its place as a narrative hinge, even if the movie drops key threads like Rita Skeeter's Animagus reveal. And then there's the graveyard. Ralph Fiennes's Voldemort is operatic and chilling, a rebirth that reframes everything that came before. “Kill the spare” isn't just a shock; it's the moment the series announces that choices have a cost. Martin McDonagh's unique brand of humour and heartbreak returns to the podcast as Luke, Westy, and Matt head to a remote Irish island for a masterclass in passive-aggressive feuding. We explore how McDonagh reunited Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson for cinema's most devastating friendship breakup, why filming on the Aran Islands nearly broke everyone, and how a miniature donkey named Jenny stole scenes from two of Ireland's finest actors. From Oscar nominations to those fingers, we're unpacking McDonagh's darkly comic genius with big laughs and opinions throughout.elling the story of Hollywood, one film at a time.Connect with ATRM: To support what we do, access our archive and listen to exclusive episodes, become an ATRM patron:Listen on Patreon Listen on Apple PodcastsListen on SpotifyTwitter/X: @ATRightMoviesYouTube: Subscribe to our channelInstagram: @allthe_rightmovies Threads: @allthe_rightmoviesFacebook: Join our movie groupBluesky: @alltherightmovies.comTikTok: @alltherightmoviesWebsite: alltherightmovies.com

Hwæt a Movie is back! This time we dive deep into the uncanny valley epic Beowulf from 2007. Released at the height of Robert Zemeckis's motion-capture mania, this version of our favorite Old English classic promised to bring the poem to life like never before. It was slated to be an event like no other, at least for John and Andy. In this star-studded and CG-saturated film, Ray Winstone voices a Beowulf who looks suspiciously like an action figure and swaggers like he just killed nine nicors. He's accompanied by the ageless Wiglaf, played by Brendan Gleeson. The great Anthony Hopkins plays a jovial but somewhat mad King Hrothgar, Robin Wright plays the deeply troubled Queen Wealhtheow, and John Malkovich does his best John Malkovich as Unferth. But if we're honest, this is the Grendel family's movie from start to finish. Crispin Glover turns in a unforgettable performance as a Grendel who swells with anger and shrinks with vulnerability. Grendel's mother is a gold-dipped, shape-shifting femme fatale with stiletto feet. She's also very much Angelina Jolie. And then there's Grendel's little half-brother dragon. That's right, the dragon is part of the family! Is this adaptation a clever deconstruction of heroism and myth-making? Or just an excuse to get Beowulf naked on an animated dragon? Zemeckis, Gaiman, and Avary take some bold liberties with the source material in this one, and we're here to guide you through it all from the perspective of two curmudgeonly middle-aged medievalists. As always, this episode of Hwæt a Movie includes a thorough summary and discussion of the film, a brief Q&A, and our final ratings: how well the film handles Beowulf, Grendel, and Grendel's mother, plus our ever-important scores for faithfulness to the source and overall entertainment value. Beowulf (2007) was a wild ride to discuss, and we hope you enjoy it half as much as Beowulf enjoys shouting his own name. Or at least as much as Zemeckis likes cleverly blocking Beowulf's bare bits from view with conveniently placed objects. Once you've listened, let us know your thoughts. Is this the definitive Beowulf for the 21st century? Or just a fever dream in a damp cave? And do you forgive us for being grumpy when it comes to Beowulf movies? Irish actor Brendan Gleeson has said that he is tired of watching fatherhood portrayed in negative terms on screens. This comes after he starred in ‘H is for Hawk' alongside Claire Foy, this film follows Cambridge academic Helen MacDonald who, while coping with the grief of her father's death, builds an unlikely friendship with a stubborn hawk named Mabel.Gleeson went on to say this particular film is so beautiful in the way that that's what it's trying to do. The memory of this man is that he was a proper, good man who gave love to his daughter. What do you think? Is fatherhood negatively portrayed on screens?Andrea is joined by listeners to discuss.
Most men today are overworked, overstimulated, and spiritually malnourished. We chase productivity but neglect silence. We build muscle but forget the soul. In this powerful continuation of our conversation from part 1, we cut through the noise and get back to the basics of what it means to live as a Catholic warrior. Fr. Dom shares hard truths about what men must reclaim if we're going to lead our families and defend the Faith. From the forgotten power of fasting and retreats to the reality of priestly warfare and spiritual combat, this episode calls every man to rise and take his place in the ranks of Christ's army.We talk about everything from cold plunges and physical discipline to the beauty and meaning of the Latin Mass vestments, the sacredness of the priesthood, and why knowledge of the liturgy can reignite your love for the Eucharist. Fr. Dom also opens up about his athletic past, his experiences in triathlons and endurance racing, and how physical discipline shapes spiritual virtue. And perhaps most powerfully, he breaks down the priest's calling with raw honesty: what it costs, what it demands, and why true priesthood is a battlefield. Every man, husband, father, or priest, is called to be a warrior for souls. You'll hear:Why men must take at least one silent retreat every year. How fasting, prayer, and physical struggle forge spiritual discipline. The danger of spiritual laziness among priests and laity alike. What it really means to discern the priesthood as a man of God.Why we must pray and fast for our priests more than ever. The Church doesn't need passive men. She needs holy warriors.CHALLENGE: Find time this month to enter into silence with God. Unplug completely. No phone. No distractions. Just Scripture, a journal, and prayer. Let Him speak. And then—fast and pray for your parish priest this week.PRODUCTS / REFERENCES MENTIONED:Exodus 90 (ascetic men's program)FSSP (Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter)Calvary (2014 film, starring Brendan Gleeson)3 POWERFUL QUOTES:“If you want to fight in a supernatural battle, to be a warrior for Christ, you need to know that you will die. Few are called, fewer are chosen.”“You can be a vicious warrior and still be gentle and kind and have peace and joy. That's what it means to be a Christian soldier.”“Take a retreat. Reconnect with your Captain. Reestablish your lines with the General. You can't fight if you've lost contact with your Commander.”KEY TAKEAWAY: A Catholic man must embrace silence, fasting, and prayer as weapons of spiritual warfare. Without discipline of body and soul, he is unarmed in battle.Send us a text Support the showPlease prayerfully consider supporting the podcast on our Buy Me A Coffee page. to help grow the show to reach as many men as possible! Twenty years ago, director Ridley Scott returned to the historical epic, the same genre that won him an Oscar in 2000 for Gladiator. Swapping the Roman colosseum for the Middle East in the time of the Crusades, Scott assembled an all-star cast including Orlando Bloom, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson, and an uncredited Edward Norton. A post-9/11 movie about Christians fighting Muslims would have seemed an easy win at the box office, but the film performed poorly stateside while doing well in Arabic-speaking countries, especially Egypt. Scott blamed the failure on studio meddling; he has since disowned the theatrical cut, and claims instead that his director's cut is the definitive version. But art, like peace in the Middle East, can be elusive. Join us as we walk into battle with the Lord for Kingdom of Heaven. Send us a textKatie and Bridget (she's back!) run up a flight of stairs fueled by only Pepsi and Twinkies as they re-watch: 28 Days Later! It's a movie all about how if the world erupts into a zombie apocalypse because of a PETA-esq heist (guys this could actually happen, so listen up!), then we all need to find our people and stay away from creepy military wanna-bees! Help! Come along as we meet Jim, a man who wakes up alone in a hospital and discovers that zombies (that we never call zombies but are definitely zombies) have taken over London and now it's a fight to survive. When he meets up with Selena, a bad ass who will kill you if you start to rage, they set out to meet more people and try to find a sanctuary. This movie asks the deep questions, such as: Is it better to die by your own choice or risk becoming a rage zombie? Should we all invest in Twinkies and crank radios now - just in case? Would the zombies have all been cured if we only got them high off weed!? All these and more in this low budget, surprisingly fun zombie movie. Released in 2002, it stars Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Brendan Gleeson, and Megan Burns.

This week's creature feature takes us to Maine, where there's something sinister lurking in the serene waters of Lake Placid. Directed by Steve Miner and starring a stacked cast featuring Bill Pullman (handsome king), Brendan Gleeson, and a foul mouthed Betty White (RIP). This was a horror film we both loved in the 90s, and we're chomping at the bit to get our jaws around this monster movie, but the question remains, does it hold up? Is Lake Placid the greatest crocodile movie of all time, or is it looking more like Lake Flaccid as we discuss the fun, the flawed, and the scaled and clawed in this childhood piece of 90s nostalgia. Send us a textKatie and special guest Julie(!) run blindly through the woods as they re-watch the suspenseful early 2000's movie: The Village! It's a movie all about how if you are fed up with the woes of society, you can just start your own cult in the woods and abandon all modern luxuries - while also simultaneously fear-mongering your children - all while allowing disease and death to kill everyone because you refuse to go get medicine! ......Yeah this feels a little too topical for this day and age! SOMEBODY HELP! Come along as we meet Ivy, a blind woman who decides to go into the woods to get medicine for her newly shanked fiancé, Lucius. When we're led to believe that the evil creatures who spread fear throughout the town also live in the woods and Ivy probably won't make it, her dad gives her (and us the audience) the real talk about the creatures and the town in general. Spoiler alert! It's kinda dumb! With not many surprising twists and turns we instead get a beautifully shot movie that may or may not be a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice! We've got scary woods, "olden times" (lol), and brainwashing galore in not-really-a-horror-movie movie. Released in 2004, it was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan and stars Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, Adrien Brody, Brendan Gleeson, and Cherry Jones.
Brendan Gleeson joins Ian on Gift Grub this morning. With posters up and about for the Weir, Gleeson admits why he hasn't stepped foot in a pub in 5 years!
