On Saturday, October 19th, from 5.30 pm, the electrifying Tallaween Festival begins. This is a cutting-edge, multi-media spectacle featuring an augmented reality mobile game, a thrilling video projection with a laser light show and a live performance kicking off outside the Civic Theatre. This will be the first-ever virtual theme park in Ireland, and perhaps in the world, and the game will be played for the first time on October 19th. The video projection and laser light show will be accompanied by a soundtrack, which will be performed live and features a dramatic mix of opera from celebrated singer Claudia Boyle, hip-hop featuring Fortune, emerging as one of Ireland's leading hip-hop artists, and Saibh, who had a Number 1 in June on the Apple Charts with 'Siren Song'. 'Tallaween' will be unleashed on Saturday, the 19th, bringing the library's darkest tales to life. Inspired by a bold reimagining of Dante's Inferno, this chilling creation by Niall Austin and a team of renowned artists, musicians, filmmakers, and game designers will haunt Parthalán Place every night from 5 PM to 9 PM until October 31st. Set free from the constraints of ink and paper, an array of characters from the literary genres of Mythology, Horror and Sci-Fi have now entered Parthalán Place, and gamers are invited to 'take up their Wand' to cast these evil characters back between the covers of their host books. They can also protect themselves with their 'Shield', but be warned… each enemy enjoys different characteristics and skills and must be fought in different ways! Virtual Theme Park: A World-First Experience There has never been a 'Virtual Theme Park' in Ireland or, indeed, anywhere else in the world. This is a location where people can go to play a game together on their respective mobile phones or devices. In the augmented reality game, players use their mobile devices to engage in real-time with their surroundings, combating 'baddies' in a fully immersive game. Also, while the featured characters will roam Parthalán Place daily from 10 am, the particularly 'nasty' ones will only surface between 5 pm and 9 pm nightly. A preview of this trailblazing game can now be seen here: South Dublin County Council has supported innovation in the arts through funding research and development projects that 'bring the stage to the digital age' - this is highly innovative and will attract a lot of attention both in Ireland and internationally. Proprietary technology in the Virtual Theme Park game was recently developed in collaboration with Maynooth University, which embraces emerging technology that will resonate more meaningfully with younger audiences. Tallaween will be launched this year as one of the highlights of The Red Line Book Festival coming up on October 14th - 20th 2024. Over 40 literary events will take place is venue acrossSouth County Dublin over the week with an eclectic mix of established writers and new voices. It is a celebration of literature, storytelling, and creativity and has grown to become one of the highlights of the cultural calendar. Now in its 13th year, The Red Line Book Festival is produced by South Dublin Libraries and Arts at South Dublin County Council offering a programme of events and workshops that appeals to people of all ages and interests, from children to adults, casual readers to bookworms. See www.redlinefestival.ie for the full programme of events taking place across all venues.

Ground-Breaking Live Stage Show Asks the Audience to 'Game' Their Way Through the Performance

Imagine a stage show where you don't just immerse yourself in the story, enjoy the music, and marvel at the spectacle, but you also get to actively 'game' your way through the performance and influence what happens on stage. '7 Deadly Sins' is the world's first hybrid eGaming and storytelling stage show, and it will premier a number of development performances in The Civic Theatre, Tallaght, on the 12th and 13th of July. Utilising ground-breaking mapping technology created in partnership with Maynooth University, the audience uses a simple app on their mobile phone to become 'active' participants, creating a seamless interaction between the audience and performers in real-time. So instead of being told to 'put your phone away' when you enter the theatre, this performance will be asking you to get your phone out and be a part of the show! This steam-punk rock opera, created by Irish playwright and technologist Niall Austin and directed by Prof. David Bassuk, re-imagines Dante Alighieri's iconic 14th-century masterpiece 'Inferno' for the 21st century. The 7 Deadly Sins are positioned as digital or social media channels such as: Photo and video-sharing apps represent Envy Dating apps represent Lust Cryptocurrency represents Greed While the performance takes place live on stage, audience members can engage in combat with an array of virtual demons, zombies, and dragons through an app available on IOS and Android. Spectators are encouraged to hold up their phones during the show and partake in the performance by using the app, which features augmented reality gaming technology contextually designed around the on-stage production. Starring opera sensation Claudia Boyle, rising hip-hop star Fortune Igiebor and singer and actress Aoife Spratt, the performance also features a host of other, never before seen interactive features. Niall Austin, the show's creator, says: "7 Deadly Sins not only brings a traditional piece of literature into the 21st century, it is a dynamic experience which offers the audience a new frontier in live entertainment - where technology, narrative and performance marry together create an unforgettable stage show. Live entertainment is constantly evolving, with many young people now attending concerts and shows to take photos and videos. I am looking forward to enhancing audience engagement and creating an incredible experience for attendees." Donal Shiels, Artistic Director at The Civic, says: "It is an exciting time in the world of theatre where technology can be incorporated into stage productions to create a new and interesting experience for audience members. We are delighted to be bringing a world first to The Civic Theatre as we remain committed to evolving with the ever-changing technology landscape. Following the incredible success of Niall's last two shows - PL-AI and Deep Fake - we are looking forward to seeing the interaction between the audience and the performers." 7 Deadly Sins takes place in The Civic Theatre, Tallaght, on Friday 12th July and Saturday 13th July at 7:30 pm. As a 'development performance, tickets are available for €12 here: https://www.civictheatre.ie/whats-on/7-deadly-sins/.

You don't need to be 50 years old to remember the Carpenters, the brother-sister duo that helped define pop music in the 1970s with gold-gilded melodies, pristine production and a certain yen for heartache. The music is timeless and has ardent fans online and on music streaming channels. It's also the basis for a new cabaret show that was developed in Indianapolis with a strong connection to Ball State University. It since has been performed on Broadway's doorstep in New York City. The most recent production was less than two weeks ago at the Laurie Beechman Theatre on 42nd Street. Titled “The Carpenters Project: An Offering,” the show is the product of two performers who cut their teeth onstage in central Indiana. One of them you very likely have seen: Brent Marty, the director of music and education at Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre in Carmel, who performs all around the Indy area. His partner in the production is Amy Rafa, a performer, producer and arts and not-for-profit administrator based in New York City. The two of them met in Ball State's Department of Theatre and Dance in the 1990s and have been friends ever since. Their mutual love of the Carpenters led them over several years to develop the show, which is more an exploration and celebration of the music than an impersonation. By the same token, this episode of the IBJ Podcast is about more than two people putting on a show. It's also about how young performers in theater have to hustle and sacrifice to build careers, and how they constantly face the question of whether performing exacts too high a price. It's about opportunities for collaboration, particularly in Indiana's close-knit theater community. And it's about preserving the bonds of friendship and helping each other achieve dreams together. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

On tap this week is Monica Shaeffer, a private piano and voice instructor, occasional music director for shows at Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette, and now Music and Artistic Outreach Director at Trinity United Methodist Church. We spoke about her background as a performer, youth instructor/music director, and now artistic consultant for Trinity United Methodist Church. Discussions of her “meet/cute” with her husband, the nature of creative activity and performance, Lafayette history, preservation, and the possibility of the return of the “Tour of Terror” ensue. The church is making a concerted effort to involve itself culturally in the community, and it has a project currently in place called “Living Water.”

On tap this week is a Pre-Show look at "Flanagan's Wake," coming to Civic Theatre of Greater Lafayette on March 16th, 17th, and 18th. Interestingly, Sarah played the part of Kathleen last year, so we have a, if you'll excuse me, “old Kathleen/new Kathleen” dynamic here.
