Rabbi David Wolpe needs no introduction, but if you insist: He's a scholar in residence at the Maimonides Fund, Rabbi Emeritus at LA's Sinai Temple, and formerly a visiting scholar at the Harvard Divinity School (where, you know, Yael…never mind). This is a somewhat optimistic, thoughtful (well, at least Wolpe's part), conversation about why Jews are fine (when's the last time you saw a Hittite walking around?), whether the bible is true, how we can build stronger friendships with other communities, and if we should forgive Kanye….not to mention Mandy Patinkin.Happy Passover to our Jews, and Happy Easter to our Christians! 9 And when you shall hear of wars and seditions, be not terrified: these things must first come to pass; but the end is not yet presently. 10 Then he said to them: Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.Tunc dicebat illis : Surget gens contra gentem, et regnum adversus regnum. 11 And there shall be great earthquakes in divers places, and pestilences, and famines, and terrors from heaven; and there shall be great signs. 12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands upon you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and into prisons, dragging you before kings and governors, for my name's sake.Sed ante haec omnia injicient vobis manus suas, et persequentur tradentes in synagogas et custodias, trahentes ad reges et praesides propter nomen meum : 13 And it shall happen unto you for a testimony.continget autem vobis in testimonium. 14 Lay it up therefore into your hearts, not to meditate before how you shall answer:Ponite ergo in cordibus vestris non praemeditari quemadmodum respondeatis : 15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to resist and gainsay.ego enim dabo vobis os et sapientiam, cui non poterunt resistere et contradicere omnes adversarii vestri. 16 And you shall be betrayed by your parents and brethren, and kinsmen and friends; and some of you they will put to death.Trademini autem a parentibus, et fratribus, et cognatis, et amicis, et morte afficient ex vobis : 17 And you shall be hated by all men for my name's sake.et eritis odio omnibus propter nomen meum : 18 But a hair of your head shall not perish.et capillus de capite vestro non peribit. 19 In your patience you shall possess your souls. In patientia vestra possidebitis animas vestras.St Vincent, deacon of Saragossa in Spain, suffered martyrdom in the persecution of Diocletian A.D. 304.St Anastassius, a monk of Persia, was put to death with seventy other Christians under Chosroes A.D. 628.

This week on Table Talk, Pastors Kyle Gatlin and Nick Shepherd dive into the final episode of their Advent series by addressing why some churches observe Advent while others do not. Tracing the season's roots back to the 4th-century Council of Saragossa, the hosts explain how Advent originated as a season of penitence and preparation similar to Lent, designed to anchor believers in the full story of Christ's birth and return. The conversation then shifts to the modern challenge of people-pleasing within the church. The pastors discuss the tension between honoring meaningful traditions and catering to personal preferences, warning that avoiding historical rhythms can distract from the church's true mission. They also draw a parallel between rejecting church liturgy and the way social media algorithms create echo chambers, arguing that the liturgical calendar is essential for forcing Christians to engage with the whole Bible rather than just the parts they prefer.

In seiner Klasse absolut einzigartig. ‘With Potocki,' Italo Calvino wrote, ‘we can understand that the fantastic is the exploration of the obscure zone where the most unrestrained passions of desire and the terrors of guilt mix together.' The gothic is a central seam of the fantastic, and in this episode Marina and Adam turn to two writers in that mode who lived over a hundred years apart but drew on the period of the Napoleonic wars: Jan Potocki and Isak Dinesen (the pseudonym of Karen Blixen). Potocki's The Manuscript Found in Saragossa (1805) is a complex sequence of tales within tales, written from the point of view of the early 19th century but describing events in Spain in the 18th century. It's a powerful commentary on the preoccupations of the Enlightenment and the repression of historical guilt. In Seven Gothic Tales (1934), Dinesen confronts some of the most unsettling aspect of sexual guilt and desire with psychological astuteness. Adam and Marina discuss the ways in which, in both works, the gothic was able to explore areas of human experience that other genres struggled to accommodate.Non-subscribers will only hear an extract from this episode. In the stories of Franz Kafka we find the fantastical wearing the most ordinary, realist dress. Though haunted by abjection and failure, Kafka has come to embody the power and potential of literary imagination in the 20th century as it confronts the nightmares of modernity. In this episode, Marina Warner is joined by Adam Thirlwell to discuss the ways in which Kafka extended the realist tradition of the European novel by drawing on ‘simple forms' – proverbs, wisdom literature and animal fables – to push the boundaries of what literature could explore, with reference to stories including ‘The Judgment', ‘In the Penal Colony' and ‘A Report to the Academy'.Non-subscribers will only hear an extract from this episode. A meditation preached in Ernescliff College, Toronto, on March 28, 2025. Its been 100 years since that day in which a young 23-year Josemaria Escriva was ordained to the priesthood in the Basilica of Our Lady of El Pilar in Zaragoza, Miguel de los Santos. There are things that we invite into our soul that leave us with a permanent imprint, a mark, an impression, like a long-lasting, expensive perfume that can become attractive to those around us. This is the story of the expansive grace of a man's ordination to the priesthood.Thumbnail: Josemaría Escrivá as a seminarian in Saragossa.Music: Original track by Michael Lee of Toronto
And when you shall hear of wars and seditions, be not terrified: these things must first come to pass; but the end is not yet presently. In patientia vestra possidebitis animas vestras. St Vincent, deacon of Saragossa in Spain, suffered martyrdom in the persecution of Diocletian A.D. 304. St Anastasius, a monk of Persia, was put to death with seventy other Christians under Chosroes A.D. 628.

This most renowned martyr of Spain is represented in the dalmatic of a deacon, and has as emblems a cross, a raven, a grate, or a fire-pile. He is honored as patron in Valencia, Saragossa and Portugal. Very little can be confirmed about his life. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-vincent-124 Today is also the Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children, which the Church in the US celebrates each year on January 22.
