The Tim May Podcast is back for a second edition this week, and it has an international twist as Team USA gears up for the Olympics. Lettermen Row's Tim May has a huge edition of the show, speaking to two of the 26 current or former Ohio State athletes who will be competing in the Olympics in Tokyo over the next few weeks. Ohio State shot-putter Adelaide Aquilla is the first guest. Aquilla won both the indoor and outdoor national championship last season on her way to winning Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year. She won Big Ten titles and has proven herself to be one of the best shot-putters in the world. Now she has an opportunity to prove that on the world stage in Tokyo for the Olympics. Tim also talked to Alec Yoder, who was selected as an additional selection on the Team USA Men's Gymnastics Team. He'll be tasked specifically with being a pommel horse specialist for the Olympics. A member of the 2018 World Championships Team, Yoder was the 2020 winter pommel horse champion and has proven himself to be among the best at the event in the world. OLYMPIC TRIALS The Olympic team has been named The 4th spot: Why "going by the scores" and "going by the all-around standings" are NOT the same thing The misunderstanding about the actual problem with Martha's way of doing things We make the arguments for both MyKayla Skinner and Grace McCallum for the Olympic team Why Tom Forster's explanation didn't help, and why the athletes didn't actually "select themselves" Olympic Trials -- "Even though the computer tells us MyKayla on the team would be a couple of tenths higher, we're so so fortunate that our athletes are so strong that I don't think it's going to come down to tenths of a point in Tokyo. We didn't feel like it was worth changing the integrity of the process simply for a couple of tenths." - Tom Forster US Championships, Jessica asked, "Regarding the two team positions that will be selected, is it going to be closer to the 3-up-3 count highest score potential or just the top four all-around?" “Erm, well no, it will be.. you know the job is to put forth the strongest team that we believe can hit 3-up-3 count. And so, by rule, the top two all-rounders will be automatically on the team. And then Pro Score has a whole query system that shows us every possible scenario of team formation to get the highest score. So, we'll look at that to try to determine how to complete the team." The blatant self-sabotage that is the US women's use of the +1 spot Justice for Shilese Jones and Riley McCusker! Why did the women not select a 5th alternate? OLYMPIC TRIALS PREVIEW The Favorites Simone Biles and the biggest question we have about her heading into trials Sunisa Lee and Jordan Chiles Who gets the second automatic team spot? What does each need to do to confirm her presumed spot on the team? Jade Carey She "has every intention" of taking her individual spot. So, good. Right? The Contenders From Wong to McCusker to McCallum to DiCello to Skinner and more, we make the Olympic team case for (and against—Spencer's part) every single athlete heading into Olympic Trials We grapple with questions like, can Leanne Wong hit consistently enough to get herself on the team? Would you feel comfortable putting Riley McCusker on the same team as Sunisa Lee? Can Grace McCallum return to her peak level in time? Men's Preview Kensley brings the TWIST with her picks for the two most likely men to get automatic spots on the Olympic team Is there any denying the top 3 favorites? What does Shane Wiskus have to do to get himself on the team? Is this finally the time that Allan Bower breaks his alternate streak? Won't somebody please think of Akash Modi???? MEN'S PROGRAM OOOPSIES (3:24) Between the all-around results mix-up and the World Cup...reassignments...the US men's program had quite the controversial week at Winter Cup. Kensley breaks it all down, with statements from USAG about both issues. USAG awarded the all-around medals to the wrong people. Great job. Yul Moldauer was under the impression he had 3 world cup assignments. Turns out, nope. We discuss the problems of miscommunication and having UNWRITTEN selection procedures for squads that have already been selected and meets that have already happened. How do we make sure things like this don't happen again? Live Blog: 2020 Winter Cup - Day 2 Live Blog: 2020 Winter Cup - Day 1 RAGE-O-METER (46:22) Details on the unacceptable "deal" USAG proposed to survivors, including four tiers of settlement money based on famousness and the release of Steve Penny, Marta, Don Peters, John Geddert, All-Olympia and others from all future claims W. T. (and we cannot stress this enough) F. Jessica has some choice feelings about it. MELBOURNE WORLD CUP OLYMPIC QUALIFIER (52:49) The 6th of 8 Olympic apparatus qualifiers has concluded in Melbourne. We answer pressing questions like Is Jade Carey an Olympian yet? Are we emotionally stable enough to talk about what happened on high bar and the latest developments in Japanese Gymnastics Jail? Could the US men actually earn an Olympic spot this way? Does Gymnastics Australia have it together? (Nope) Why is Jessica more interested in Tampax than in the results? PLUS... Winter Cup—actual gymnastics part! We discuss improvements on USAGs part (what?), some interesting decisions about who made national team especially re: Alec Yoder, Gage Dyer's floor, Spencer's favorite Winter Cuppy moments, and what it means now for athletes who didn't make national team. Women's NCAA news (1:29:18) Spencer is soooooo glad we had so much other stuff to talk about that we didn't have much time to discuss the scoring at UCLA/Utah because he physically cannot. Historic lead-iff 10 finally happened. Grace Glen got a 10 as the first person up on beam. Maggie Nichols is injured, Michigan set a program record, and why we need receipts!
