Sabrina Mar enjoyed many successful years as a competitive gymnast as a member of the US National Team from 1982 to 1988. She won the All-Around title in the 1985 Championships of the USA. Sabrina was a two-time World Championship Team Member (1985, 1987) and the 1987 Pan American All-Around Champion. An injury prevented her from completing the 1988 Olympic Team Trials. Weightlifting came before powerlifting, but did you know weightlifting wasn't exactly the first barbell sport? Or rather, did you know that the first iteration of weightlifting was VERY different than what we see today in the Olympics? The history of weightlifting is fascinating, and in this episode of Iron Culture Drs Conor Heffernan and Cliff Harvey are back to share their experiences with, and the history of, All Around Lifting, the original barbell sport. With literally hundreds of potential lifts to compete in, All Around Lifters are barbell generalists rather than specialists, and both strong and versatile. Modern All Around meets are very similar to the original lifting competitions from the early 19th century before weightlifting centralised around the snatch, clean and jerk and clean and press (and eventually just the snatch and clean and jerk), and before modern strongman, powerlifting or CrossFit existed. While you may know Cliff Harvey as a nutrition researcher, he is also a former All Around world champion weightlifter and amateur historian. He shares his experience while Conor goes into the fascinating tale of how weightlifting began, and how modern All Around Lifting recaptures it. 00:00 Omar? Välkomna till ett DJ 50 Spänn med många mil under bältet och en bunt billiga plattor som fyndats i gudsförgätna avkrokar. Billy Rimgard gör frostskadad ambient i projektet Frönäs. Sylvester Stewart was born in Dallas, Texas, but moved to the Bay area of California before becoming a multi-instrumentalist and changing his name to Sly Stone - the primary driver of the group Sly and the Family Stone. This was one of the first integrated groups, and one that crossed many genres. They played what would become known as psychedelic soul, but you can trace the origins of funk, soul, and psychedelic music through Sly and the Family Stone. The first Family Stone album was called “A Whole New Thing,” and it caught good critical coverage. Unfortunately it was a commercial failure. Clive Davis asked for a more pop friendly sound, and Sly Stone created an approach to their second album, Dance to the Music, which followed a formula. Each lead singer would take turns on lead vocals or sing together in unison, the songs would feature a prominent solo for the instrumentalists, and the lyrics would appeal to a wide audience even though they would still focus on peace, love, and opposition to racism. The group really did not care for the formulaic approach of this album, but it worked when it came to commercial appeal. “Dance to the Music” became a top 10 pop hit, and it inspired several groups to gravitate towards psychedelic soul, including the Temptations, the Impressions, and the Four Tops.Sly Stone is the primary driver of the group, writing almost all of their songs, serving as a multi-instrumentalist, and as a primary vocalist. His borhter Freddie Stone is on vocals and guitar, and his sister Rose Stone joins the group for the first time on this album. Other members are Larry Graham on vocals and bass, Cynthia Robinson on trumpet and vocals, Jerri Martini on saxophone, Greg Errico on drums, and backing vocals by Little Sister (Vet Stone, Mary McCreary, and Elva Mouton).Sly and the Family Stone would release a number of songs to hit the top 10 in the Billboard Hot 100 in the years to come. The follow-up album to this one is called "Stand!," and is considered the band's high water mark, along with their performance in 1969 at Woodstock. The band would encounter instability and drug problems as time went on, with the original group dissolving in 1975. Sly Stone would continue to record as "Sly and the Family Stone" for many years afterwards using rotating musicians, until drug problems basically forced him to retire by 1987.Bruce brings the early funk for this week's podcast. Are You ReadyThis song is an expression of opposition to racism with lyrics like "Don't hate the black, don't hate the white, of you get bit, just hate the bite. Make sure you heart is beatin' right."Ride the RhythmThis song starts off side two of the album. It is a straightforward dance song, and has some obvious comparisons to James Brown. It has a nice mix of horns and "wah wah" guitar.Don't Burn BabyScat was an early precursor to rap music, and this track is a good example of a rapid rhyme scat. The eastern feel is also reminiscent of George Harrison. "Don't burn, baby, burn. Just learn, baby, learn."Dance to the MusicHere is the big hit off the album, and the first Sly and the Family Stone single to reach the top 10 on the Billboard Charts, peaking at number 8. It is a straight up party record, but was also one of the most influential songs of the late 60's. The formula used by Sly Stone to make the songs on this record are clear here, even though he and the group did not like that approach. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Shape of Things to Come by Max Frost and the Troopers (from the motion picture Wild In the Streets)This dystopian comedy-drama became a cult hit of 1960's counterculture. Max Frost and the Troopers was a fictional rock band in the film. STAFF PICKS:Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing by Marvin Gaye and Tammi TerrellLynch starts out the staff picks with a smooth grooving song off the soul duo's album “United.” Ashford & Simpson wrote and produced this song, which became a hit within a week of its release, going to number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart.Anyone for Tennis by CreamRob brings us the theme song for the 1968 film “The Savage Seven,” an outlaw biker exploitation movie. Eric Clapton's lyrics depict a callous disregard for all the turmoil going on in the world, with the singers discussing going out for a game of tennis while everything disintegrates around them. She's A Heartbreaker by Gene PitneyWayne features an early 60's crooner who turns to a Motown sound for this go-go hit. It peaked at number 16 at the time. It is about a guy who is continually drawn to a woman who breaks his heart every time. Love Is All Around by The TroggsBruce's staff pick is probably most familiar to fans of the Christmas movie "Love Actually," where an old rocker converts it to a cheesy Christmas song called "Christmas Is All Around." The Troggs' lead singer Reg Presley wrote it in about 10 minutes, inspired by a broadcast of the Salvation Army Band performing an evangelical song called "Love That's All Around." NOVELTY TRACK:The Unicorn by The Irish RoversThe Irish story of how the unicorn missed its appointment with Noah's Ark was on the charts in 1968, and closes out our podcast this week. Little Willie John was a teenager when he recorded his first hit, “All Around the World,” for King Records, in 1955.When his career faded in 1962, John was a grizzled veteran of 25. Although rock & roll was once the province of the young, few singers under the age of 20 have been able to communicate more than jittery restlessness or poignant ache.Little Willie John did much more. Like his contemporaries Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and Clyde McPhatter, Little Willie John was a vanguard of soul.

Jennifer Wilburn of Boerne, TX, was inducted into the ATA Hall of Fame in 2022. Jennifer competed at the Grand for the first time in 1984, shooting only singles. Two years later she won her first trophy there, placing third among sub-juniors in the Singles Class Championship. Since then she has won more than 85 Grand trophies, including women's titles in the 2001 Doubles; 1999 All-Around; plus the 2005 and 2007 HOAs. In 2015 she claimed the Lady I HOA crown.Having won titles in California, Florida, Louisiana and Texas, Jennifer's first state championship was the 1985 Florida sub-junior singles. Three years later, at age 16, she won the handicap over the field with 97 from 26.5. That score also earned her a punch to the back fence, making her at that time the youngest female to go to the 27-yard line. She was the 50th woman to do so, and she and Jeanine, who was the 16th, were the first mother and daughter to do it.That year she also won the junior singles championship, and she repeated the next year. Her other Florida titles include seven women's between 1991 and 2006.====Trap Talk is brought to you by Krieghoff. ...and these awesome sponsors! In part 2 (we're sorry, there's a lot to discuss and our thoughts can't fit within the neat hourly format of a weekly podcast) we discuss some of the other plotlines in Love, Actually, including the HR-horrifying story of the PM and Natalie, sex pervert Colin and the foxy Wisconsin babes, the horribly miscast Alan Rickman and his hot secretary, sad Leslie Nielsen and his adorable son, and the nearly forgetable but also kinda tragic Laura Linney plot. We also wrap up by discussing the way this film treats women and portrays men, noting some of the not-so-awesome messages that both this film and the follow-up communicate. Again, not the worst thing in the world to watch, but boy, watch your media with a somewhat skeptical eye. All credit to StudioCanal for use of their poster and Billy Mack's "Christmas is All Around." We are now recording through Riverside.fm and producing both video and transcripts of each episode. Find those on our Patreon. This month we made a donation to a trans rights org supporting trans individuals fleeing states where their existence is being outlawed. Yeah, we're still doing that. Ohl put his stamp on ProRodeo in 1994 by winning Rookie of the Year and earning his first trip to the NFR. It would take Ohl a few years to win his first gold buckle. He edged out Fred Whitfield to capture the 1997 tie-down world title and roared through the 1998 season, capturing his second title. He had another record-setting year in 2001 as he added steer roping and team roping in order to compete for the All-Around title. In the ninth round of the NFR, Ohl missed his calf on the first loop. A second loop caught the calf by the hind legs. As Ohl dismounted, he twisted his knee, tearing two major ligaments. He had to be carried out of the arena by the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. However, he had amassed enough money earlier in the week to secure both the tie-down title and the All-Around title. He accepted both buckles from crutches on the 10th night. He went on to capture his fifth and sixth tie-down roping titles in 2003 and 2006. He still owns the record for the most NFR rounds won with 52.
In this podcast, Reuben Saltzman and Tessa Murry host Kyle Miller from All Around, exploring the nuances of home inspections within Homeowners Associations (HOAs). Kyle emphasizes the critical importance of understanding the division of responsibilities between homeowners and the association, shedding light on financial obligations, liabilities, and the prevalence of water intrusion issues during exterior renovations in multi-family buildings. The discussion covers the need for potential buyers to assess the external maintenance standards of HOA-managed properties, the necessity of inspecting exteriors despite being assumed to be covered by the association, and the challenges of outdated construction methods leading to water-related problems in almost every renovation project. Practical insights on roofing, siding, and window selection offer valuable guidance for potential homebuyers navigating HOA-managed properties.

Continuing in our For the Love of the Middle series, we're having a conversation about something that may impact us as we hit those middle years (or sooner)–caring for our aging parents. With us to be our guide through this sometimes difficult journey is Michelle Boyaner, the director of the documentary film "It's Not a Burden: The Humor and Heartache of Raising Elderly Parents.” As a storyteller, Michelle felt compelled to talk about this particular stage of life, and decided to film her own journey through it with her mother to help others embrace this unique time in a family's evolution. Jen and Michelle explore the highs and the lows of caregiving for aging parents and how to stay sane and open hearted during the process. Michelle Boyaner is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, and educator who founded production company Greenie Films with her wife, Barbara Greene. Together they have written, directed and produced a variety of short and feature films that tell stories of caring for aging parents, living with HIV and the challenges of mental illness–all told with their signature humor and deep capacity for compassion. Join Jen and Michelle as they discuss: How to know when it's time to step in with your aging parents Honoring and managing your parents feelings of not wanting to be a burden Finding humor in the challenging moments Why caregivers feel so lonely, even when there are so many in the U.S. Moving from anger and frustration with difficult parental relationships to forgiveness We hope you'll feel less alone on your caregiving journey as Michelle provides practical advice and encouragement as well as some tough love for those in the middle of this common but not often discussed major life experience. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! That's when you might want to consider stepping in. But how do I start that conversation? How can I place my hand on theirs and then gently sort of take the reins? It's a tough thing to consider.” - Michelle Boyaner “By the time we get to this place in life [of caring for our] parents, you are playing a montage of their greatest hits and misses, right?” - Michelle Boyaner “It's important to stay engaged with the humor of all situations if you can. That humor is this little cup of water that helps us in between the hard moments. Caring for aging parents has its absurd moments and leaning into the humor of it can sustain us.” - Michelle Boyaner “You're going to make mistakes. But the thing that becomes most important for those going through caring for an aging parent is to try to find support. Try to find others who have been going through the same thing and ask questions. Talk about how you're feeling. Take care of yourself to fill your tank so that you can help fill your parents' tank.” - Michelle Boyaner Michelle's Links Twitter Facebook Instagram Books & Resources Mentioned in This Episode Greenie Films Webpage Greenie Films: Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson, It's Not a Burden; The Humor and Heartache of Raising Elderly Parents, All Around the Nation, Finished Life by Michelle Boyaner Instagram Account by Heather Spooner: Letter League Liz Hammond's Poem: “The women who walk us home” Connect with Jen!
