Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. - The pope offered his blessing on Sunday to athletes competing in the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Pope Francis prayed that the games be a sign of hope, universal brotherhood and healthy competition. Among the more than 11,600 athletes are several committed Catholics, including U-S gymnast Grace McCallum. Pope emeritus Benedict XVI has expressed concern about the lack of faith within Church institutions in Germany. Benedict shared his concerns in a written conversation that was published in a German magazine. Benedict wrote that many people in Church institutions in Germany do not share the inner mission of the Church. He warned that this will, in many cases, obscure the witness of the Church. The written conversation was published in honor of the 70th anniversary of Benedict's ordination to the priesthood. The archbishop of Tokyo has been named the new secretary general of the Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences. The archbishop made headlines last week for asking Olympic athletes to not visit churches to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The archdiocese of Tokyo had reportedly been preparing to care for the spiritual needs of Olympic athletes, but canceled those plans because of the coronavirus pandemic. Today, the Church remembers the parents of the Virgin Mary, Saints Joachim and Anne. The couple's faith and perseverance brought them through the sorrow of childlessness, to the joy of conceiving and raising the immaculate and sinless woman who would give birth to Christ.

Catholic Charities of Eastern Washington has opened five new cooling shelters in Spokane. The Pacific Northwest is experiencing an unprecedented heat wave. Portland, Oregon recorded an all-time heat record of 116 degrees on Monday. Both Portland and Seattle have recorded hundreds of emergency room and urgent care visits for heat-related illness. U.S. Olympic gymnast Grace McCallum is bringing both her skills and her Catholic faith to the Tokyo games in July. McCallum reportedly does not travel anywhere without her rosary and a special cross from her grandmother. At just 18 years old, McCallum is one of six women competing in the Tokyo summer Olympic games this year. Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Chicago auxiliary Bishop John Manz. The bishop turned 75 in November, which is the age at which bishops are required to send a resignation letter to the pope. He was one of eight auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese of Chicago. He dedicated his priesthood to advocating for immigrants. Today is the feast day of Arnulf of Metz. Saint Arnulf was a first-century statesman and bishop.
OLYMPIC TRIALS The Olympic team has been named The 4th spot: Why "going by the scores" and "going by the all-around standings" are NOT the same thing The misunderstanding about the actual problem with Martha's way of doing things We make the arguments for both MyKayla Skinner and Grace McCallum for the Olympic team Why Tom Forster's explanation didn't help, and why the athletes didn't actually "select themselves" Olympic Trials -- "Even though the computer tells us MyKayla on the team would be a couple of tenths higher, we're so so fortunate that our athletes are so strong that I don't think it's going to come down to tenths of a point in Tokyo. We didn't feel like it was worth changing the integrity of the process simply for a couple of tenths." - Tom Forster US Championships, Jessica asked, "Regarding the two team positions that will be selected, is it going to be closer to the 3-up-3 count highest score potential or just the top four all-around?" “Erm, well no, it will be.. you know the job is to put forth the strongest team that we believe can hit 3-up-3 count. And so, by rule, the top two all-rounders will be automatically on the team. And then Pro Score has a whole query system that shows us every possible scenario of team formation to get the highest score. So, we'll look at that to try to determine how to complete the team." US CLASSIC Simone Biles officially debuted the Yurchenko double pike. We discuss how awesome it is, and Spencer has 84 things to say about the D score. What Tom Forster, US High Performance Coordinator, said when Jessica asked if USAG would fight the low D score given to Simone's vault. Simone gave credit to both of her coaching teams. She's been doing the Yurchenko double pike for over ten years (see our interview in 2013), first with Aimee Boorman and now competing it with Cecile and Laurent Landi. Jordan Chiles went 57+ again. Is she an Olympic lock? Can anyone stop the reliability of bars champion Kayla DiCello? OUTSPOKEN GROWN ASS WOMEN ADULTS - Simone, Morgan Hurd and MyKayla Skinner do not hold back in interviews "The way Marta did things, it was kinda brutal and it didn't need to be that way. With Tom and the rest of the team, it's a growing experience, but the changes have been really good. Tom is so supportive. It's so weird having a relationship with a national coach." - MyKayla Skinner "I don't think I'd be able to do elite gymnastics now if Marta was here. In some ways it's been a lot nicer not having her around. With consistency, though, she was good at making us hit under pressure. Since Simone and I have that experience, we can help the younger generation." - MyKayla Skinner On her activism as a world champion regularly demonstrating at Black Lives Matter protests and anti-asian hate rallies, "I have to give credit to the brave survivors who paved the way and opened the floor for me to use my voice. These are much bigger than gymnastics. If gymnastics disappeared tomorrow, these issues would still be there. I'm a person first, and a gymnast second." - Morgan Hurd ,who also added when speaking about losing followers on social media because of her opinions, "I don't need people who don't think human rights are a given to be supporting me." Could the US men actually earn an Olympic spot this way? Does Gymnastics Australia have it together? (Nope) Why is Jessica more interested in Tampax than in the results? PLUS... Winter Cup—actual gymnastics part! We discuss improvements on USAGs part (what?), some interesting decisions about who made national team especially re: Alec Yoder, Gage Dyer's floor, Spencer's favorite Winter Cuppy moments, and what it means now for athletes who didn't make national team. Women's NCAA news (1:29:18) Spencer is soooooo glad we had so much other stuff to talk about that we didn't have much time to discuss the scoring at UCLA/Utah because he physically cannot. Historic lead-iff 10 finally happened. Grace Glen got a 10 as the first person up on beam. Maggie Nichols is injured, Michigan set a program record, and why we need receipts!
