The Journey of My Mother's Son
Mark Connor – It's About Time

The Journey of My Mother's Son

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 7, 2025 32:19

In this episode of the Journey of My Mother's Son podcast, I talk with fellow author, Mark Connor. Mark Connor is a Boxing Trainer and a Writer from Saint Paul, Minnesota. His first book, It's About Time (Millions of Copies Sold for Dad), is a saga wrapped around a package of poems, guarded by angels. Through an autobiography reading like a novel, he weaves together a story of love, family, and life with twenty poems running through it, sharing his growth in the Catholic faith, the influence of Irish heritage in his hometown's American identity, his exploration of Lakota tradition within the urban American Indian community, and his understanding of how truth found in different spiritual approaches can lead others—as it led himself back—to its fullness in the revelation of Christ. Mark Connor grew up in Saint Paul, calling himself the product of a “mixed marriage,” because his father—a combat wounded Vietnam veteran—grew up across the street from St. Columba parish in the Midway district, while his mother—a school teacher who later became a lawyer—came from the Holy Rosary parish “across the border, in South Minneapolis.” Born in Minneapolis and raised in Saint Paul, he began boxing at age 10, at the Mexican American Boxing Club on the city's East Side, the area of the city from which he formed his understanding of the world, anchoring his perception of direction to the family house and the rising of the sun outside his bedroom window.  He had 102 amateur fights, made it to three national tournaments, and competed against some of the nation's top world class boxers. He became the Upper Midwest Golden Gloves lightweight champion at 17 and traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO, two days after graduating high school, competing in the 1987 trials for the Pan American Games. Raised in the East Side parish of St. Pascal Baylon, where he attended first through sixth grade, Mark's father, a graduate of [Bishop] Cretin High School in Saint Paul, insisted Mark and his brother, David (13 days less than one year older than Mark), each attend its rival, St. Thomas Academy, in suburban Mendota Heights, from 7th through 12th grade, an all-boys Catholic Military high school. Having begun writing seriously at 16 and starting college at 18, Mark began an internal struggle between the academic path and boxing, spending one and a half years, respectively, at three schools—Regis University in Denver, Co., the University of St. Thomas in Saint Paul, and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis—earning his BA in English from the University of Minnesota. He was inactive as a boxer for only one and a half of those years, but never felt he was able to reach his potential while emersed in study, so upon graduation, he continued Boxing. Mark boxed competitively for two and half more years, then, deciding not to follow his gym mates—two of whom became world champions—in a professional boxing career, and believing it was already late in life to join the military, he went on an adventure, driving to Seattle, WA, securing a job on a salmon fishing boat headed to Southeast Alaska. A Year later, instead of returning to the commercial fisherman's life, he traveled with a friend to a Lakota Sundance ceremony on the Rosebud reservation, leading eventually to a job at Aín Dah Yung (Our Home) Center, a Native American Indian temporary emergency homeless shelter for youth aged 5 to 17, in Saint Paul. Within this setting, continuing to write freelance articles and periodically working on fiction and poetry, he eventually began a personal training service and worked with both competitive and recreational boxers, as well professionals and amateurs, wrote about boxing, and contemplated his faith. While recognizing that truth, goodness, and beauty are indeed present in the faith traditions of the indigenous community of friends welcoming him, as both a guest and a relative, he eventually reembraced the beauty, goodness, and truth of his Catholic faith and has since attempted to responsibly discern God's will for him, according to his legitimate talents and desires. Within that sincere effort, at the end of September, 2019, his father, who'd been patiently guiding him, died from a heat attack, just before America—and the world—appeared to enter a new era of chaos within which we are attempting to stabilize ourselves. Mark wrote the first lines of his book, It's About Time (Millions of Copies Sold for Dad) the day his father died, Monday, September 30, 2019. However, over the next year, as his country went through the impeachment and acquittal of a president, endured the trauma of an economic shutdown over a mysterious virus coming from a lab leak in China, and his beloved Twin Cities blew up in fiery riots, Mark worked when he could (the Boxing gyms and churches were closed due to Governor's orders), helped his mother who was diagnosed with a fatal heart disease, and daily mourned his father. He helped protect American Indian buildings with American Indian Movement (AIM) Patrol, and he eventually got part-time work as a bouncer, working bar security when restaurants were allowed to reopen. But he didn't do much until, as Christmas 2020 approached, he resolved that in the coming year he would do something with which his father would be happy. Organizing himself and setting his goal, he began writing the book his father—who'd nagged Mark about always insisting he was a writer yet never publishing a book—was never to see published in his earthly lifetime. Beginning the daily process of writing on February 9, 2021, Mark completed the first draft of It's About Time (Millions of Copies Sold for Dad) just before Easter on the Monday of Holy Week, March 29, 2021. In this book he tells the tale of his search for a meaningful life, appreciating the gift of God's love that life actually is, and how he sees now that the guardian angels were always guiding him and his family through it all. A contract with a humble little local publisher was severed over editorial differences on Christmas Eve, 2022, so Mark relied on his father's gift, his high school education, accepting help from his St. Thomas Academy contacts, specifically his literary advisor, Dan Flynn (Author of Famous Minnesotans: Past and Present) and legal advisor Kelly Rowe, and Mark's classmate, Tony Zirnhelt, and the book won the 2024 Irish Network Minnesota Bloomsday Literary Award and was published, through Connemara Patch Press, on Father's Day, June 16. Unfortunately, Mark's mother, who'd read the manuscript, never saw it in print, having collapsed in his arms and died October 22, 2023. Yet Mark continues on in hopeful and confident prayer that she—Mrs. Nanette Jane Connor—is watching over him, as she promised she would, next to his father—Robert J. Connor—while gazing perpetually into the Beatific Vision of the face of God. To find out more about Mark, you can check out his website at https://boxersandwritersmagazine.com/.

This week's Practical Horseman Podcast, sponsored by Horse Week, is with Hannah Sue Hollberg. The five-star eventer has a lot on her radar right now. Earlier this year, she took over the ride on Thoroughbred gelding Business Ben from fellow eventer Allison Springer and has spent the past nine months fostering a new partnership with him. The pair has some big dates on their competition calendar this fall—and hopefully another one in the spring of 2025. Among her other talented horses are Capitol H I M and Harbour Pilot. Hannah Sue retired her longtime partner Harbour Pilot following his last five-star run at the 2022 MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fairhill, where the pair finished in 10th. Hannah decided to retire the then 19-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, after their 12-year partnership to ensure “William” ended his career healthy and happy—and to give him the opportunity to enjoy lower-impact work. Hannah Sue and Capitol H I M—affectionately known as “Cheeto”—made their five-star debut at the 2022 Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event and competed in the CCI5* at last year's Maryland Five Star, where they finished fourth and were the highest-placed U.S combination. After serving as a working student with Karen and David O'Connor from 2008 to 2011, Hannah Sue went on to become a team gold and individual silver medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games aboard Harbour Pilot. She also represented the U.S. in a number of European events, gained plenty of five-star experience and most recently placed third at the MARS Bromont CCI4*-L with Capitol H I M last June. In today's podcast, we talked to Hannah Sue about what's new on her horizons, the incredible partnerships she shares with her horses, her training philosophies—and how she finally overcame a lack of confidence through perseverance and her passion for eventing horses. ABOUT RONDA ROUSEY AND EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED UFC, WWE, and Olympic superstar, multi-ESPY Award-winner, and Hollywood actress Ronda Rousey has stepped out of the ring and into the world of comics. Artists Writers and Artisans (AWA), the independent developer of bold, original stories from the world's most outstanding creators, announced today the upcoming Kickstarter campaign for Rousey's graphic novel debut, EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED Penned by Rousey and edited by Axel Alonso, AWA Chief Creative Officer and former Editor-and-Chief at Marvel, with art by Eisner and Ringo Award-winning comic book artist Mike Deodato, Jr. (BAD MOTHER, WONDER WOMAN), the graphic novel draws on Rousey's incredible career in the ring and pairs it with Deodato's martial arts background to create the most accurate and action-packed fight scenes in comics! Her codename: "Mom." With a fake baby bump filled with guns, she's built a reputation as one of the deadliest hitwomen on the planet. But on the verge of her big break in the criminal underworld, Mom makes a fateful decision: sleeping with a potential target (who just so happens to be a top-ranked assassin himself). A few weeks later, Mom finds that her codename is about to become a whole lot more literal. What follows is a wild mashup of action, adventure, comedy, and romance as a newly pregnant Mom with a bounty on her head fights off wave after wave of assassins, falls in love with her baby daddy, and decides how to face her personal and professional predicament.EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED sets a new bar for the authenticity of fight scenes through a unique creative process developed by Rousey, Deodato, and AWA. "I felt like I had to tell this story, because EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED pulls from the most important parts of my life: motherhood, my career as a fighter, and fun action movies," said Ronda Rousey. "I knew I needed an artist who understood how to translate my fighting from real life to graphic novel artwork, so it's been truly gratifying watching Mike Deodato bring this story to life. I'm so excited to work with AWA and share my very first graphic novel with the world and I hope comic fans will enjoy this adventure." Through Kickstarter, AWA allows fans to support its most ambitious limited-edition projects. This new graphic novel will feature Kickstarter exclusives and include premium, tiered rewards for the biggest Ronda Rousey fans. The EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED Kickstarter will launch on July 25 and those interested in learning more about the campaign and its reward offerings should sign up here to be notified when the campaign is live. Throughout her career as a global superstar, Rousey has built a huge fan base around the world and Kickstarter allows fans to support this debut in more than 200 countries worldwide. Chief Creative Officer of AWA Axel Alonso added, "Ronda has brought the same level of ferocity, discipline, and craft to her original script that made her a champion in Judo, UFC, and WWE. A potent blend of dark comedy, romance, and over-the-top action, EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED delivers a knockout punch on every level. You'll laugh, you'll wince, you'll cry, and you'll thrill at the action scenes - meticulously choreographed by Ronda and executed with precision by comic book maestro and martial arts black belt Mike Deodato, Jr. - that literally leap off the page."For more information on the EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED Kickstarter and other content, visit AWA Studios on Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube, and AWAStudios.com. RONDA ROUSEY BIO (FROM IMDB) Ronda Rousey burst onto the women's MMA scene in August of 2010. Born in Riverside County, California on February 1, 1987 to parents Ron Rousey and AnnMaria DeMars, little Ronda was born with an umbilical cord wrapped around her neck that damaged her vocal cords. She didn't speak coherently until the age of six. Ronda was a self-professed tomboy and swam from the ages of 6 to 10. She competed on the Jr. Olympic swim team where she placed in the state level.Because of her mother, a 7th degree black belt and 1984 World Judo Champion, Ronda took up the sport. She had a hard time socializing with other kids and found that Judo gave her confidence. She holds a 4th degree black belt in the martial art.Ronda's Judo career is a storied one. At 17 she became the youngest judoka in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. That same year she won a gold medal at the World Junior Judo Championships in Budapest, and in 2006 she became the first U.S. female in almost 10 years to win an A-Level tournament going 5-0 to clench the gold at the World Cup in Great Britain. At 19 she won the bronze medal at the Junior World Championships. She is the first U.S. athlete to win two Junior World Medals. In 2007 she added a silver at the World Judo Championships and a gold at the Pan American Games. The pinnacle of her Judo career was a bronze at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Rousey became the first American to win an Olympic medal in women's Judo since it became an Olympic sport in 1992.After medaling in the Olympics, Ronda's career hit a dead end. She did some bartending to make ends meet and tried to find a better paying job, but it was tough finding anyone that needed her particular skill set. Throwing people down and putting them in armbars aren't really something you can put on a resume. By chance Ronda caught the Gina Carano vs. Julie Kedzie fight on television and things changed. She made her mixed martial arts debut as an amateur in 2010. Since then she has never lost a fight, winning the majority in the first round by armbar submission. Ronda took it upon herself to chase after and demand attention so that the UFC could no longer ignore women fighters. UFC President Dana White had publicly stated that women would never be allowed to fight in the UFC, but on February 23, 2013, Ronda did just that. She won the fight against Liz Carmouche in the first round with her signature armbar and became the first UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion.Rousey is the only woman to be the champion in both the UFC and WWE as well as the only woman to headline a pay-per-view event in both companies. She was voted the best female athlete of all time in a 2015 ESPN fan poll, and Fox Sports described her as "one of the defining athletes of the 21st century. Rousey has also appeared in films, including The Expendables 3 (2014), Furious 7 (2015), and Mile 22(2018), and published her autobiography My Fight / Your Fight in 2015.https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/awastudios/ronda-rouseys-expecting-the-unexpected?ref=7mmyf4Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.

Known by his peers for his infectious creativity and enthusiasm, Geoff Thatcher is an experienced creative leader who knows how to take a project from concept to reality. For most of his career, these projects have involved creating world-class experiences in theme parks, museums, visitor centers, brand experiences, and live events. Geoff's eclectic background always delivers a fresh perspective. His experience includes everything from helping the General Entertainment Authority declare Saudi Arabia open for business to Hollywood in 2018 to envisioning new concepts for Miral on Abu Dhabi's Yas Island. Geoff's work transcends borders, whether it's the world's largest video dome on a beach in Dubai or the opening ceremonies of the Rio 2007 Pan American Games in Maracanā Stadium. Recent and current projects include the Delta Flight Museum, Abu Dhabi's Playtopia, College Football Hall of Fame, Jacksonville's H2.O Purification Center, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, the FM Global Visitor Center outside Boston, and the Speed Experience Center in Saudi Arabia's Qiddiya giga project. His work can be seen in attractions such as the Ozark Mill at Finley Farms outside Branson, Missouri, the Quest theme park in Doha, and Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. Geoff is a student of the themed entertainment industry who got his start working as a teenage clean-up boy, lifeguard, train engineer, and stuntman at Lagoon Amusement Park & Pioneer Village in Utah. Before founding Creative Principals in 2017, Geoff was a creative writer, producer, and creative director for JRA, FiveCurrents, and The Brand Experience. He worked on various world-class projects in these roles, including brand experiences like the Lockheed Martin Space Experience Center, museums like Enguinity in the United Kingdom, and theme parks like the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii. Clients included Fortune 500 icons such as Honeywell and Procter & Gamble and institutions and non-profits such as Kaiser Permanente. He is an author, writer, and speaker who has ghostwritten books, published articles, and speaks regularly at TEA and IAAPA events. His first book, The CEO's Time Machine, was published in April 2020. TD Magazine said the book is “a great way to prepare your mindset going into conversations about how your business can navigate our new, uncertain world.” He was featured on Science Channel's show If We Built It Today, discussing how “The Lost City of Atlantis” could be transformed into an attraction. Finally, he launched and owned Ask Buzz, a website and attraction calculator honoring the late Harrison “Buzz” Price. Instagram: @geoffthatcher X: @geoffthatcher LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/geoffthatcher/ www.creativeprincipals.com Geoff's Work and Book Discussion Theme Park Experiences and Career Paths Geoff, a veteran of the theme park industry, shared his passion for creating memorable experiences and telling powerful stories with Michael, who agreed on the importance of experiences over possessions. They reminisced about their favorite parks, with Michael mentioning Kings Island and Geoff discussing the global impact of Kings Island's success. Geoff highlighted the benefits of hands-on experience in the amusement industry and the variety of career paths available, including engineering, hospitality, and space travel. Geoff's work as a writer was also discussed, with Michael showing interest in his motivation for writing a book. Geoff's Time Travel Book Journey Geoff shared the story of how he wrote "The CEO's Time Machine" while travelling to Saudi Arabia for work. The book explores the idea of time travel and the challenges of making decisions in the present. Geoff had initially intended to publish the book himself, but due to the pandemic, he collaborated with his daughter Zoe, who designed and illustrated the book. The book was eventually published in April 2020, and although it wasn't a bestseller, Geoff expressed pride in its positive reviews. Debating Time Machine and Future-Thinking Geoff and Michael debated the pros and cons of a time machine, particularly focusing on its impact on decision-making and future-thinking. Michael highlighted the potential benefits of learning from past events and historical figures, but also noted the potential drawbacks of knowing tragic events in advance. Geoff, drawing from his experience with a history exhibit, underscored the value of a forward-looking perspective, using the example of an invisible airplane, and argued that envisioning and living in the future could offer insights that are currently unavailable. AI Enhancing Immersive Experiences in Concerts Geoff and Michael discussed the future of immersive experiences in the experience industry, with a focus on the integration of AI. They agreed that AI has the potential to transform the industry, much like animatronics and other techniques have in the past. They also discussed the evolution of music concert experiences, particularly the use of holographic technology. They highlighted how current technology, such as the new stadium in Vegas and the YouTube concert sphere, offers a more immersive experience compared to traditional concerts, and how AI enhances these experiences by enabling virtual participation and on-stage performances.

Aviva and Stephanie talk about how lucky they are to have had the opportunity to talk to so many of the riders on the dressage Olympic short list, and then Aviva answers the question about how the counter canter in First Level Test 3 should be ridden and how it is scored.Together they interview up-and-coming international rider Endel Ots. A native of Wisconsin, Ots grew up on a farm and began riding at age 8. While he started in jumping, he soon made his way to dressage. At age 23, he got an opportunity to train with Hubertus Schmidt in Germany where he gained invaluable experience. After that he worked with Lars Peterson and found his new home in Wellington, Florida where he is based today. He was an alternate for the 2011 Pan American Games team and selected for the 2019 Pan American Games team with the horse Lucky Strike but had to withdraw when his horse unfortunately suffered superficial cuts in a trailer injury. After Lucky Strike recovered, the pair went on to win the Intermediaire I Championship at the Dressage Festival of Champions at Lamplight. Then in December 2023, he got the ride of a lifetime with Heidi Humphries' Zen Elite's Bohemian. After just a few months together, the pair were named to the short list to compete for a spot on the U.S. Olympic dressage team.Listen in!No one knows your horse's thoughts, emotions and moods as well as you.
