The Setting Trick: Conversations with World Class Bridge Players
My guest today is Stefan Scorchev, a bridge player, friend, and the creator of IntoBridge. For those who are unaware, IntoBridge is a free platform for online bridge games. In his childhood, Stefan learned the value of online bridge as he spent hours playing bridge every day, and found that playing bridge online encouraged him compete at in-person tournaments. Stefan is the first Bulgarian guest I've had on the show, and I fist met him in 2012 when he played on the Bulgarian team in the Junior Nationals. We talk about in-person and virtual bridge, the unique features of IntoBridge that borrow from modern gaming, and what it's like to run a bridge startup. You can learn more about IntoBridge on its website: https://intobridge.com/ Subscribers to The Setting Trick email list check your email or to subscribe click here: https://www.thesettingtrick.com/ Episode Highlights: 4:58 – Stefan played bridge online constantly in his childhood, and moved into in-person tournaments at seventeen. He says he played bridge as much as fifteen hours a day. 12:05 – Stefan says he is the strangest looking person at tournaments because he always wears his IntoBridge merchandise. 16:05 – “We focused on inventing something that has the potential that you close it immediately and continue whenever you can.” 17:35 0:54 – Ranked matchups on IntoBridge 24:17 – The Daily exists to give people a reason to return to IntoBridge every day. 28:47 – Stefan has a lot of ideas for new bridge formats unique to IntoBridge 32:45 – Some unfortunate mis-clicks 40:12 – Bridge marketing is difficult, so word of mouth has been the best marketing channel for IntoBridge 48:22 – Running a startup is difficult as investors and employees rely on the performance of the business 56:46 – Having access to a free bridge platform as a kid was game-changing for Stefan. 57:59 – One great aspect of online bridge is that it naturally leads people into in-person bridge, encouraging them to meet more people. 1:02:41 – Stefan's Fiance, Desi, is coming to the US Nationals for the first time.

This is a follow-up episode to the last Melina Costanza podcast, #119. That episode was one of the fan favorites, josh favorites, and even favorites of other professional climbers. Go listen to that one first, because it was amazing and will set the stage for this follow-up episode. It's only been a month since Melina last came on, but in that month she won US Nationals, both in Lead and Bouldering, and did so for the second year in a row. Yes, in 2023 she won Lead and Bouldering and in 2024 she AGAIN won Lead and Bouldering! On top of that she won multiple high level local comps this month and found the time to go outside and do a slew of double digit boulders. One of which was a near flash of a V13 (she still sent 2nd go)!Melina is incredibly articulate and insightful on the intricacies of performing at the highest level of competition. In the last episode she detailed her training leading into Nationals, and since she had such a stellar performance we wanted to sit down and explore exactly how that training turned into perfect execution.Don't miss this one… These two pods together are not just a 2x, it's squared. Grip Strip Podcast Episode 234 – Flipping The Script This episode covers recent races in NASCAR's Cup and Xfinity series at Daytona, along with the Truck series at Milwaukee Mile. Harrison Burton celebrated his first-ever Cup win, making it a special moment for the Wood Brothers, as it marks their 100th victory. He managed a last-minute pass on Kyle Busch, which secured him a spot in the playoffs. We discuss some key moments from the races, including multiple cars flipping over, and how NASCAR seems to struggle with handling such incidents. There's also a brief recap of what happened at Michigan International Speedway and updates on points as we head to Darlington. In the Xfinity series, Ryan Truex scored his second win of 2024 while driving for Toyota. We're still piecing together exactly what happened during that race. In the Truck series, Layne Riggs finally claimed his first victory, though he dislocated his shoulder in the celebration, which his father, Scott, witnessed live. Early leaders included Eckes, Majeski, and Heim before Riggs took the lead. We also look at the points heading to Bristol for the second playoff race in the round of 8. Moving on to IndyCar, the last week featured races in Portland and Gateway. Penske Racing was on fire with Josef Newgarden winning at Gateway and Will Power succeeding in Portland. Alex Palou continued to show consistency, while Scott McLaughlin had a more challenging race. We provide updates on other key players and points as we go into Milwaukee for a doubleheader. In Formula 1 news, Lando Norris struggled at the start once again but ultimately celebrated a win, marking McLaren's rise above Red Bull and Aston Martin. Charles Leclerc rounded out the podium, but Carlos Sainz had a tough weekend. Mercedes faced some difficulties, with George Russell dropping out of contention and Lewis Hamilton receiving a questionable penalty yet recovering to finish eighth. Questions loom around Logan Sargeant's future in F1 and who might step in next, along with updates as we head to Monza. In our GSP Roundup, we highlight the F2 and F1 Academy races at Zandvoort last week, with the F2 and F3 season finale coming up at Monza this week. There was also IMSA GT racing at VIR last week and WEC action at Circuit of the Americas this week. Indy NXT was in Portland last week and will be in Milwaukee this week. MotoGP and Moto2 raced at Aragon, while NHRA took part in the US Nationals. Looking ahead, we preview the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix and make our picks for the races. We also preview the IndyCar doubleheader at Milwaukee Mile, along with picks for the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity races at Darlington, discussing who might secure spots in the Cup playoffs. Finally, we wrap up the show with Josh's Sim Segment before closing out the episode.
