Teylor kicks us off this week with a details of her Pokemon Go exploits.  ___________ pt4: Cowboy Bebop (Anime 2001) Keith’s pick this week is the genre-blending series from director Shinichirō Watanabe. This 26 episode series (plus a movie) explores a futuristic galaxy with a group of bounty hunters. The writers started with extensive world building, detailing all the different planets and expressions of civilization throughout the universe. They then played with different tropes within the world they had built. Originally imagined as a toy vehicle Bandai gave them cart blanche, the one condition being they have cool space ships. Part way through the project Bandai toys realized the series wouldn’t work for their purposes. Bandai Visual (a separate division) swept in before the series was cancelled to be a production partner. Composer Yoko Kanno formed a Jazz & Blues band “The Seatbelts” as part of the process of composing the score and soundtrack for the series. The music is some of the best written for television. The opening title sequence, which includes the song “Tank,” is at once retro and original- it has influenced a number of animated series opening since, like Teen Titians on Cartoon Network. The cast of characters are unique individuals with their own stories. Each character has their storyline explored through the course of their adventures. You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu.  ______________________ NEXT WEEK: We’ll return to discuss a new topic for a couple of episodes, Father’s and what they want to share with their kids. In our opener Keith expounds on his favorite museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You can get a membership to this beacon of culture in a desert of lots of other culture that is NYC. ___________ pt3: Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (Manga & Anime 1999-2008) John’s pick this week, which he gets to after a rambling retelling of his path to discovering Anime, is the music/rock band anime & manga “Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad.”  The Manga started in 1999 and finished in 2008, it was collected in 34 volumes. Unfortunately the US localization rights were released before the entire series was published in the states. The mangaka Harold Sakuishi was a fan of wrestling and baseball, both of which he did comics for and references in Beck. The animated series is pretty economical and relays the first third or so of the manga over 26 episodes. The Beat Crusaders provided most of the music, making this one of the better series about musicians and bands, with fun and poppy rock music. Fender released a series of guitars inspired by designs from the series, which themselves were inspired from actual guitar models. You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu.  ______________________ NEXT WEEK: We conclude our topic and our time with Teylor (but we need to get her back- to find out what Slipknot mask she’d have). Keith’s is the last pick, the series Cowboy Bebop. You can follow us on twitter @newtoyoushow and you can leave comments down below! This series is a standout for the writer and producers.  Yoshitoshi ABe lent his talents as the character designer. He has designed for a number of series. Two great ones, as mentioned by Teylor; NieA 7 & Haibane Renmei. Lain explores the breakdown of self and mental health as well as existential questions in a world where we construct new realities and selves to fill a ‘virtual’ space. Lain is drawn and voice directed differently baed on the which aspect of her personality she takes on. A diligent denizen of the wired gathered all the boards from the extra features and posted them here. You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu. There are storyboards on some of the commentary tracks.  ______________________ NEXT WEEK: We continue with our topic with John’s pick, the manga and anime series Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad. This week on The Comics Alternative podcast, Derek and Andy W. get back into the regular swing of things by discussing three recent titles, one book and two single issues. They begin with something that was published late last year, Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López's The Eternaut (Fantagraphics). This is a legendary text, and not just within the realm of comics history. The Eternaut is a post-apocalyptic tale of alien invasion, originally serialized in the Argentinian weekly, Hora Cero Semanal, between 1957 and 1959. It was revised and expanded in 1969 and 1975, respectively, and it's notable for its politically informed subtext. Many have read Oesterheld's text allegorically in light of Argentina's history of dictatorship, its Dirty War, and United States imperialism. Indeed, the writer was “disappeared” in 1977, making The Eternaut even more of a poignant read. Although the collected series, originally titled El Eternauta, has been translated in a variety of different languages, it wasn't until the recent Fantagraphics publication that the book has been available in English. For both Andy and Derek, this is one of the best comics of 2015, and they wanted to start this year by discussing it in depth. Next, the guys turn to a title that had once been thought “disappeared,” Nowhere Men (Image Comics). It's been over two years since we saw the last issue in the series — completing the first narrative arc — so the publication of issue #7, written by Eric Stephenson with art by Dave Taylor, is of particular interest. The two approach Nowhere Men #7 from different perspectives: Derek went back to reread the first six issues, so as to refresh his memory over the storyline, while Andy came to the issue “cold,” having forgotten much of what went on in the first trade. These different reading experiences drew them to the same assessment: readers would do well to go back and revisit the first arc, as this latest issue doesn't provide any context or backstory to reorient its audience. Nonetheless, the guys conclude that it's great to have Nowhere Men back and that it's a series well worth the effort. They then wrap up with Erick Freitas and Ulises Farinas's Amazing Forest #1 (IDW Publishing). This is a new anthology where each of the short stories, all written by Freitas and Farinas, features the work of a different illustrator. Julien Dufour (“Tank”), Matt Rota (“Wolf Mother”), Melody Often (“Ronnie the Robot”), and Yumi Sakugawa (“Bird Watcher”) are the artists in this inaugural issue, and with the exception of Sakugawa, who last year published Ikebana through Retrofit/Big Planet, these are creators with whom the guys are unfamiliar. But all of the stories in Amazing Forest are strong, art as well as narrative, and both Derek and Andy are expecting great things from the title. There need to be more collections like this!
