The Blind Rage podcast: Horror Movie Commentaries

It's DeCoteau DeCember on The Blind Rage Podcast! All month long, we're celebrating cult filmmaker David DeCoteau! The festivities kick off with 1988's NIGHTMARE SISTERS, starring the legendary Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer. The trio of Scream Queens play nerdy sorority sisters who stumble upon a crystal ball, which inhabits the spirit of an evil psychic medium. After a few spells, incantations, and a little bibbity-bobbity-boo, the sisters go from geek to sheik, with a lust for…well, let's just say the male form.

On this edition of Parallax Views, July 4th is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate than hitting the beach! Of course, if you're not careful in that water you could get munched up by a shark like in JAWS. Or worse... PIRANHA WOMEN! Piranha Women is the latest effort of Charles Band's long-running horror/fantasy/sci-fi factory Full Moon Features. It's also a return to said genre for it's director, the legendary independent filmmaker Fred Olen Ray. For a number of years now Fred has been working on TV, including making Hallmark Christmas movies with Chevy Chase and Lifetime thrillers. For him filmmaking is not merely some hobby, but a profession. Simply put, he's a working class filmmaker. Prior too much of his television work, Fred directed a great number of horror, sci-fi, action, and fantasy pictures during the VHS boom in the 1980s and a number of erotic thrillers during that genre's popularity in the 1990s. Among some of the cult classics Fred has directed are Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, The Tomb, Biohazard, Cyclone, Evil Toons, Inner Sanctum (one of the most successful video rentals of the 99s), Beverly Hills Vamp, Witch Academy, Alienator, Deep Space, Star Slammer, Bad Girls from Mars, Mind Twister, Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfolds, Inferno, Possessed by the Night, and countless others. Through it all he's worked with such well-known actors as Ice-T, Don "The Dragon" Wilson, David Carradine, Sybil Danning, Martin Landau, Nightmare on Elm Street's Heather Langenkamp, Eric Roberts, Gunna Hansen (Leatherface in the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre), Morgan Fairchild, comedy movie legend Eddie Deezen, Bond girl Britt Ekland, Twin Peaks' Russ Tamblyn, Sid Haig, and many, many others. A monster kid that grew up on drive-in horror movies, Piranha Women marks Fred Olen Ray's returns to the type of fun genre fare that's made him a cult figure amongst cinema buffs. And it stars such beauties as Carrie Overgaard and Keep Chambers as the deadly titular fish women. In this conversation Fred and I discuss a number of topics including: - The secrets of indie filmmaking from matching shots to filming big name actors on a schedule - Working with classic actors like John Carradine, Aldo Ray, and Cameron Mitchell - The tricks he used to film the animated monster in the ambitious low-budget live-action horror Evil Toons - Working with Full Moon and thoughts on the promotional wizardy of Charles Band - Filming nude scenes with actresses - How to make films on low-budgets and tight-schedules - The craft of filmmaking - Orson Welles' cinematographer Gary Graves and his sabotaged film Moon in Scorpio - How he began working on Hallmark and Lifetime movies; what TV networks expect out of him as a director and why he gets the job - Filmmaking as a job rather than a hobby - The killer ta-tas gag in Piranha Women - The rise and fall of the "Scream Queen" cycle of films in the 1980s directed by Fred, Jim Wyrnoski, and David DeCoteau starring actresses like Linne Quigley, Michelle Bauer, Brinke Stevens, and Kelli Maroney - Advice to young filmmakers and what Fred looks for in young filmmakers (including discussion of Fred's producer credits for Steve Latshaw's Jack-O, which was recently re-released on Blu-Ray by Fred's Retromedia company, and Henrique Couto's Bigfoot web-series Boggy Creek) - And much, much more!

We talk about our love for Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer. Dustin talks about the New Ghost busters flick, Ticks, the Toolbox Murders as only a few of his recent viewings. Roxy explains the major events in 1971 and then has some quick reviews on A Clockwork Orange, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, and The Toy Box. Dustin adds his favorites from 1971 like the Spielberg classic Duel and Daughters of Darkness. And this write up only skims the surface of our usual deep dives into schlock film. The Amazing Jeremy Sumrall of First Day of Winter Films Joins us for a conversation that will blow your mind around Sex, sexuality and gender plus how graphic and exploitative horror and thiller films are a source of pleasure and a healthy outlet of expression!!  Jeremy Sumrall: Self-professed “Texploitation Flickmaker” Jeremy Sumrall has worked in independent film since 2007, when he was cast as the hulking masked killer known as "The Beast" in the award-winning slasher flick SWEATSHOP, which made him fall in love with the nuts-and-bolts of filmmaking. In 2013, Jeremy caught the eye of FANGORIA MAGAZINE with a provocative tribute to 80s slasher flicks in the form of a poster (created by infamous horror artist Marc Schoenbach) for a then-unrealized movie called THE PICKAXE MURDERS PART III: THE FINAL CHAPTER which was scripted as a sequel to a movie that never existed. With the sudden interest in his work, Jeremy completed the script and over the course of the next year, several genre stalwarts would sign onto the project. Even radio legend Howard Stern would give it a nod, as Stern Show employee Sal Governale was cast as a sleazy gas station owner. The love-letter to 80s slasher films was eventually released under the simplified name PICKAXE in 2019 from Wild Eye Releasing and subsequently enjoyed a lengthy stay near the top of Amazon's Best Selling Horror DVDs, reaching as high as #18. He is currently in pre-production on an action-exploitation flick called HELLFIRE, which recently concluded a successful fundraising campaign via Indiegogo (it's still IN DEMAND, which means you can still donate and get cool perks here: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/hellfire-grindhouse-action-film#/), and production starts in January. He has assembled an amazing cast of indie stalwarts, including scream queen legend Brinke Stevens. In addition to filmmaking, Jeremy's passions include hockey, wrestling, fitness (he's dropped 100 lbs thanks to eating healthy and DDPY) and of course, polyamory. Jeremy is an advocate for different relationship styles, and practices solo polyamory with his two current amazing partners. Join me and one of my favorite rubber hand puppets a.k.a. The Imp (voiced by Dukey Flyswatter) as he terrorizes a group of coeds locked in a bowling alley. If you're searching for substance, search elsewhere. This one is pure entertainment—and pure fun! There's a reason they tell you to keep a healthy distance from hanging works of art while strolling your favorite museum, and it has nothing to do with sneezing on the Mona Lisa. If you're like Anna Manning (Asia Argento), you enter the painting, falling headfirst into a strange new world, where fang-toothed fish are so friendly, they come up and plant one right on your mouth. Anna is experiencing what is known as The Stendhal Syndrome, a disruption of the mind which occurs when the eye takes in some of the most beautiful paintings in the world. It is a strange and uncommon phenomenon Dario Argento himself experienced as a child and, being that it had such a strong hold on him for the decades that would follow, he turned it into one of his most visually stunning films. My Good buddy and #1 Chucky Fanboy James Garibay joins me for this commentary, so hold your breath and dive on in. It's going to be a very strange one indeed. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/blindragepod/message

Includes a special visit from Mr. “Turn on, Tune in, Drop out” himself, Dr. Timothy Leary, along with the birth of Star Trek fandom.Narrated by Brinke StevensCreated and Directed by Mathew KlicksteinExecutive Produced by Rob SchulteWritten and Produced by Mathew Klickstein, Rob Schulte, and Christopher TylerEdited by Rob Shulte, and Christopher TylerMixed by James Bilodeau Original Music Composed by Max DeVincenzo and Produced by Fox Tracks MusicWith help from Brannan Goetschius and Michael FischeAll interviews (unless otherwise noted) conducted by Mathew Klickstein.Principal interviewees/contributors (in alphabetical order):Al Jean, Anthony Russo, Barry Alfonso, Barry Short, Bill Lund, Bill Mumy (provided by contributor), Bill Schanes, Bjo Trimble, Bob Arendt, Brinke Stevens, Bruce Campbell, Caseen Gaines, Chuck Graham (provided by SDSU), Clayton Moore, Dave Clark, Dave Scroggy, Erin Hanna, Gene Henderson, Greg Bear, Gregory Benford, Gus Krueger, Felicia Day, Frank Miller, Ho Che Anderson, Igor Goldkind (provided by SDSU), Jackie Estrada, Jeanne Graham (provided by SDSU), Jim Cornelius, Jim Means, Jim Valentino, Joe Russo, John Pound, John Trimble, Kevin Eastman, Linda Yeh, Lloyd Kaufman, Kevin Smith (provided by contributor), Len Wein (provided by M. COMIC-CON BEGINS: Origin Stories of the San Diego Comic-Con and the Rise of Modern Fandom

We plunge down the time tunnel to the earliest days of fandom: back before nerds were cool, before science fiction was taken seriously, and before comic book characters ruled Hollywood. It was a time when fans could only connect through ‘zines and specialty magazines. A time when MAD Magazine and The Twilight Zone expanded the minds of youth across the nation. And a time when a small group of high school kids in San Diego met a visionary super-fan from Detroit named Shel Dorf.Narrated by Brinke StevensCreated and Directed by Mathew KlicksteinExecutive Produced by Rob SchulteWritten and Produced by Mathew Klickstein, Rob Schulte, Christopher Tyler, and James BilodeauEdited by Rob Shulte, Christopher Tyler, and James BilodeauMixed by James BilodeauOriginal Music Composed by Max DeVincenzo and Produced by Fox Tracks MusicWith help from Brannan Goetschius and Michael FischeAll interviews (unless otherwise noted) conducted by Mathew Klickstein.Principal interviewees/contributors (in alphabetical order):Al Jean, Anthony Russo, Barry Alfonso, Barry Short, Bill Lund, Bill Mumy (provided by contributor), Bill Schanes, Bjo Trimble, Bob Arendt, Brinke Stevens, Bruce Campbell, Caseen Gaines, Chuck Graham (provided by SDSU), Clayton Moore, Dave Clark, Dave Scroggy, Erin Hanna, Gene Henderson, Greg Bear, Gregory Benford, Gus Krueger, Felicia Day, Frank Miller, Ho Che Anderson, Igor Goldkind (provided by SDSU), Jackie Estrada, Jeanne Graham (provided by SDSU), Jim Cornelius, Jim Means, Jim Valentino, Joe Russo, John Pound, John Trimble, Kevin Eastman, Linda Yeh, Lloyd Kaufman, Kevin Smith (provided by contributor), Len Wein (provided by M. Hey there! Remember that time we all ran away to the big city to play golf and exorcize teenagers? Neither do we, but it sounds like a sweet dream. Find out what sorta BMX tricks we'd have pulled together in this hypothetical scenario when you donloyd and listen now! Up first! It's 1980's Times Square! The third film in Kevin Moss's continuing series exploring the runaway teenagers of the 1980s, this one's got marquees-a-plenty and a supporting turn by Tim Curry portraying none other than Johnny LaGuardia, famed fictional NYC radio DJ. The soundtrack's chock full of bangers from top to bottom, but does the movie thrill us? !Next up! There's very little exorcism and absolutely no teenagers in 1991's Teenage Exorcist, but that can't stop us from reviewing it. It's a Fred Olen Ray production, after-all, and Parker Bowman's got priorities when it comes to enjoying every instance of a leather bikini-clad Brinke Stevens whipping Eddie Deezen in a demonic basement scenario. Finally! Of course, it's 2004's 3-Iron (aka Bin Jip). It's the Korean romance film that you just KNEW we'd review some day - and the day is here. Is it a Sean pick, though, or does it not feature any baffling stretches of surreal silence? Is it even about golf? All this plus the trouble with cicadas, a cricket's jihad, Kevin wants his classic Jughead doll, a weirder looking dude than Paul Giamatti, being unfair to Jim Van Bebber, casting out demons on Skype, Siskel v Ebert: a heavyweight title match, extended musical interludes, nerd news and even more! Recorded live-to-tape on National Best Friends Day, 2021! Direct Donloyd HereGot a movie suggestion for the show, or better yet an opinion on next week's movies? Craig Muckler was born in 1953 in the Mesabi Range town of Virginia, Minnesota. He was born with a stutter and a determination to overcome it. As a result, he was part of a rock band in high school. His childhood was also influenced by a regular summer visitor, the mother of Rock Hudson. Craig moved to Los Angeles to try to make it in show biz. He was part of the company that produced "Malibu High, " and tried his hand at everything he could, including acting -- his part in a film about skyjacker D.B. Cooper ended on the cutting room floor -- to script writing -- succeeding with the cult classic "Microwave Massacre" -- and he kept body and soul together with such jobs as movie theater employee. A friend and local-access TV producer, Michael Morrison, encouraged him to host his own show, and named it for him: "Craig Muckler's Hollywood Showcase." Among the guests Craig had on the show: comedian Jackie Vernon, actors Aldo Ray, William Sanderson, Misty Rowe, Bo Svenson, Brinke Stevens, director Allan Holzman, composer Susan Justin. Dr. Snuggles and friends return for episode 33 of our spin-off show about the weird world of softcore skin-flicks! Last episode we finally got to Jim Wynorski, and this episode it's Fred Olen Ray time, as we check out his 1996 erotic thriller Over the Wire! An murder plot unexpectedly overheard on a telephone call leads to a web of secrets, mysterious and twists. Hey, it's sort of like 1948's Sorry, Wrong Number, isn't it? Well, yes and no. There's less bed-ridden Barbara Stanwyck in this (like, 100% less), and more Landon Hall and Shauna O'Brien (in various beds for different reasons), and more crazy acting from legendary weirdo John Lazar as an assassin. Also, you get to see more of Tim Abell than you'd ever imagined you might as he climbs over Shauna O'Brien with his back to the camera while completely naked. It's all on show, believe me. You can see everything that man owns, as they say. Plus, we check out the career of Brinke Stevens! The question of why Brinke does come up - quite reasonably - because she has literally two lines in the film. The reason is because she's fascinating and awesome. She was kicked out of her doctoral studies in marine biology because she was performing "forbidden research" on dolphin communication. That's a direct quote, by the way. David DeCoteau's 1988 horror comedies, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama and Nightmare Sisters, are notable for featuring the trio of '80s scream queens Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer. They're low-budget bits of craziness, loaded with bad jokes, buckets of blood, and copious nudity. Also in both films is actor Michael Sonye, better known as Dukey Flyswatter, frontman for the Los Angeles splatterpunk band, Haunted Garage. He voiced the imp in Sorority Babes, and played the mystic Omar in the opening to Nightmare Sisters. Additionally, Haunted Garage performed four of the songs heard in Nightmare Sisters. Beyond all of that, Flyswatter has written and acted in quite a few genre films you might be familiar with. We spoke about all of this via phone with Flyswatter earlier this year, before his recent knee replacement surgery.

Linnea. Brinke. Michelle. If those three names paired together make sense to you, then this is the episode you want to hear! Actresses who have made a career appearing in numerous horror flicks have been given the title "Scream Queen" but what exactly does that mean? We go through our definition of the term, who we think are the earliest examples of the type, the actresses we think deserve the term, and (of course) the trio we mentioned above. First up, we talk about what we've been watching including our big screen adventures with The Evil In Us and The Descent, some questionable comedy choices we made that include guys in drag as well as Adam Sandler and some police recruits, a bunch of Dollarama choices, and much more!
