The perfect anime to review on this podcast; Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad also ranks a solid 8.29 on MyAnimeList and is considered one of the greatest anime of its genre. We fell in love with this anime mostly because the music is amazing but also because it is so unbelievably relatable for Emily and I. All the trials and tribulations of discovering a new passion, learning and developing a talent, forming a band, gigging with that band, and finding success all while coming of age. The only critique we had for Beck was that the animators didn't animate the instrument playing correctly haha but it didn't take away from the story itself! However, we were very impressed by the voice acting from both the Sub and Dub versions of the show. Either one is a great watch! So go watch it!Final Rating: 6.5/7 (-0.5 for not releasing an OST with the background score)YouTube Playlist: AN-37: Beck: Mongolian Chop SquadInstagram: @animenoisepodcastTikTok: @animenoisepodcastYouTube Channel: AnimeNoiselinktr.ee/animenoiseCashApp: $emberbbCheck out our merch on Etsy! This week we are covering Beck – Mongolian Chop Squad. As three band dudes we were primed for this show... however opinions in Camp Shmanime are VERY diverse. Some roles are reversed in this conversation but SOMEONE is still blindly infatuated, SOMEONE is still a harsh critic, and SOMEONE still yells a bunch. We talk a lot about being in a band and how we know all these characters in real life, we discuss the quality of the music in this show and whether it matters despite being the main underlying theme, and we go deep on Subs vs. Dubs again in a show where the English language plays such a massive role. Don't be fool... tune in while we riff on this.SPOILER ALERT!!!Save this episode for later if you want to experience this show without a high-energy, often heated, very thorough discourse on it's high and low points. We're back at it baby! We've got a brand new season of Why Are You Making Me Watch This, so that means this time it's Eric's choice. And his choice was: BECK Mongolian Chop Squad, a slice of life anime about Koyuki, a Japanese student discovering his love and talent for music while trying to start the greatest rock band. Will Koyuki succeeded? Will Merrill like it? Can a show have a scene where two characters just sing to each other in a pool for five full minutes?

For those about to rock, we hope you like high school melodrama! The guys tackle Beck, a pretty straightforward story of a band performing its final show and then breaking up! Hey, that's actually the plot of That Thing You Do, starring perpetual favorite Tom Hanks. You should definitely watch that movie. It's not anime, but it's still really good. Series: Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (2004)Episode: 25

In our opener Keith expounds on his favorite museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. You can get a membership to this beacon of culture in a desert of lots of other culture that is NYC. ___________ pt3: Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (Manga & Anime 1999-2008) John’s pick this week, which he gets to after a rambling retelling of his path to discovering Anime, is the music/rock band anime & manga “Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad.” The Manga started in 1999 and finished in 2008, it was collected in 34 volumes. Unfortunately the US localization rights were released before the entire series was published in the states. The mangaka Harold Sakuishi was a fan of wrestling and baseball, both of which he did comics for and references in Beck. The animated series is pretty economical and relays the first third or so of the manga over 26 episodes. The Beat Crusaders provided most of the music, making this one of the better series about musicians and bands, with fun and poppy rock music. Fender released a series of guitars inspired by designs from the series, which themselves were inspired from actual guitar models. You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu. ______________________ NEXT WEEK: We conclude our topic and our time with Teylor (but we need to get her back- to find out what Slipknot mask she’d have). Keith’s is the last pick, the series Cowboy Bebop. You can follow us on twitter @newtoyoushow and you can leave comments down below! You can follow Teylor on twitter @teylorsmirl go listen to the fun and heartfelft podcast she does with her sisters: Still Buffering, and go check out her art on her tumblr- teylorsmirl.tumblr.com. Before we get into our main pick from Jules shares something new to him: the Ricoh Theta S, a 360 Camera. He took a Panorama of us all at the table Check it out in an explorable format here on John’s Facebook ___________ pt2: Serial Experiments Lain (Anime 1998) Teylor presents her pick on our topic this week with the animated 13 episode series Serial Experiments Lain. This series is a standout for the writer and producers. Yoshitoshi ABe lent his talents as the character designer. He has designed for a number of series. Two great ones, as mentioned by Teylor; NieA 7 & Haibane Renmei. Lain explores the breakdown of self and mental health as well as existential questions in a world where we construct new realities and selves to fill a ‘virtual’ space. Lain is drawn and voice directed differently baed on the which aspect of her personality she takes on. A diligent denizen of the wired gathered all the boards from the extra features and posted them here. You can purchase the anime on Amazon, or stream it on Hulu. There are storyboards on some of the commentary tracks. ______________________ NEXT WEEK: We continue with our topic with John’s pick, the manga and anime series Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad.
