Marketing That Moves People: Building Brands That Become Lifestyles With Caitlin Choate

Up Arrow Podcast

Caitlin Choate is the Global Head of Marketing at Boatsetter, a peer-to-peer boat rental platform. With nearly 15 years of experience building disruptive brands, she has led marketing efforts at companies like TOMS, Google's Nest, Airbnb, and Yumi. Caitlin's work has been recognized by Cannes Lions and the Webby Awards for innovation and storytelling.  In this episode… Marketing isn't just transactional; it requires building emotional resonance with customers through memorable experiences with a brand. It's easy to sell a product, but how do you sell a lifestyle, a sense of identity, or even a community? How can companies balance bold creativity with performance and data-driven ROI? Brand builder and creative marketer Caitlin Choate believes that connecting with customers emotionally begins by designing marketing that mirrors real-life human experiences. She recommends leveraging user-generated visuals, generating stories that emphasize emotional connection over product specs, and integrating creative, data, and performance teams. Caitlin also highlights the value of running measurable, high-reward experiments to foster brand growth and category domination. In this episode of the Up Arrow Podcast, William Harris converses with Caitlin Choate, Global Head of Marketing at Boatsetter, about turning product transactions into lifestyle-driven brand movements. Caitlin discusses brand versus performance alignment, using PR and influencers as a storytelling medium, and why cultivating serendipity can catalyze unexpected career opportunities.

Let's bring back Coriander Pesto! It's so good to add flavour as a condiment to a curry. But it can also be drizzled over cooked fish. Or to marinate chicken. SO GOOD, TRUST ME.1 bunch of coriander, washed well and spun dry100g plain peanuts (not roasted/salted etc)Juice of 1 lemon2 small green chillies, de-seeded if you don't like heat1 tsp saltFYI in Meera Sodha's version (and we both LOVE HER COOKBOOKS), she also adds in 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder and 4 tsp brown sugar! Rea so wanted to perform Beckett's play Krapp's Last Tape, he had the foresight to record his youthful self reading it. In his new production at Adelaide Festival, the audience gets to hear those recordings. We head Back Stage to the hat maker's studio! In fiction there are lots of characters who are famous for their hats. Robin Hood. Sherlock Holmes.  Lady Bracknell (she needs a ridiculous hat). In our new series Back Stage, Michael meets theatre milliner Phillip Rhodes, who reveals how hats bring a character to life. Butoh is a dance form that started in Japan in the 1950s and was called 'the dance of darkness'. Dancers often wear white body paint and explore raw psychological states. But it can also be outrageous and funny, as veteran performer Yumi Umiumare tells us about her own life practising Butoh. We end with the recent EO attempting to expand the powers of the death penalty.   Death Penalty survey #1: https://forms.gle/S31MTYbM8JNsikpe9    Show Notes:    History of the death penalty: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/article/history-of-the-death-penalty/  https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/facts-and-research/background/history-of-the-death-penalty/early-history-of-the-death-penalty  Timeline of the history of the death penalty: https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/stories/history-of-the-death-penalty-timeline  History of the death penalty in USA: https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/facts-and-research/background/history-of-the-death-penalty  Death penalty in the U.S.: https://www.findlaw.com/criminal/criminal-procedure/the-u-s-and-the-death-penalty.html  Capital punishment in the United States: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_in_the_United_States  On Crimes and Punishment by Cesare Bonesana di Beccaria, 1764: https://constitutioncenter.org/the-constitution/historic-document-library/detail/cesare-bonesana-di-beccariaon-crimes-and-punishments-1764 Overview of the death penalty and capital trials: History, current status, legal procedures, and cost: https://www.ojp.gov/ncjrs/virtual-library/abstracts/overview-death-penalty-and-capital-trials-history-current-status  Crimes act of 1790: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimes_Act_of_1790 List of women executed in the United States since 1976: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_women_executed_in_the_United_States_since_1976  Amnesty International resources https://www.amnesty.org/en/what-we-do/death-penalty/ “The Movement to Abolish Capital Punishment in America, 1787-1861” by David Brion Davis: https://www.jstor.org/stable/1847110?read-now=1&seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents Study reveals racial bias in executions: https://eji.org/news/study-reveals-racial-bias-in-executions/ “I just wanted to … stay alive” Who was WIlliam Furman, the prisoner at the center of a historic legal decision?: https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/i-just-wanted-to-stay-alive-who-was-william-henry-furman-the-prisoner-at-the-center-of-a-historic-legal-decision  Furman v Georgia:  https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/us-supreme-court/408/238.html chrome-extension://oemmndcbldboiebfnladdacbdfmadadm/https://scholarship.richmond.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1097&context=law-student-publications  Gregg v Georgia: https://caselaw.findlaw.com/court/us-supreme-court/428/153.html  HIstorical Federal Executions: https://www.usmarshals.gov/who-we-are/history/historical-reading-room/historical-federal-executions  Judiciary Act of 1789: https://www.usmarshals.gov/who-we-are/history/historical-reading-room/judiciary-act-of-1789-charter-us-marshals-and-deputies  EO on expanded Death Penalty https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/01/restoring-the-death-penalty-and-protecting-public-safety/ https://prismreports.org/2025/02/10/death-penalty-undocumented-immigrants-trump/ https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/florida-lawmakers-push-for-mandatory-death-penalty-in-immigration-crackdown/ Equal Justice Initiative https://eji.org/issues/death-penalty/ Texas Department of Criminal Justice on DP https://www.tdcj.texas.gov/death_row/dr_facts.html McCleskey v. "I think she had a deep ambivalence about me, knowing me, having a relationship with me from the very beginning." -- Susan Kiyo Ito Read the transcript of this episode here: https://app.swellai.com/t/tp_01JJYRPQ0EJEGKW4GNXFMCA8CV EPISODE SUMMARY: In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, I had the pleasure of speaking with Susan Kiyo Ito, a writing professor and author of the memoir I Would Meet You Anywhere. Susan's book, a culmination of 30 years of work, explores her journey as a biracial adoptee—half Japanese and half white—who was adopted at three and a half months old by Japanese American parents. We delved into Susan's origin story, her relationship with her adoptive parents, and her deep desire to connect with her birth mother, Yumi. Susan described Yumi as a charismatic yet ambivalent figure, reflecting on the complexities of their relationship and the cultural stigma surrounding adoption in Japanese society. Throughout our conversation, we discussed the emotional weight of adoption, the challenges of identity, and the universal longing for connection that many adoptees experience. Susan shared how writing her memoir was a healing process, allowing her to articulate her experiences and put down the burdens she had carried for so long. We also touched on the misconceptions surrounding adoption, particularly the notion of "luck," and how important it is for adoptive parents to support their children in their search for identity and connection without imposing their own feelings onto them. As we wrapped up, Susan encouraged listeners to embrace their stories and consider the power of sharing their experiences. Her insights and reflections provide a valuable perspective on the complexities of adoption, making this episode a must-listen for anyone impacted by adoption or interested in understanding its nuances. ===============

Jaclyn (@wranglerofchaos) is a writer, youth worker, and game master who wrote "Rolling with the Youth," a book focusing on fostering safe and fun spaces through role-playing games. Together, they emphasize the importance of inclusivity in gaming, aiming to provide all children, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities, a place at the table!   Before the interview, Chris and Rachel discuss their shared sense of optimism for the future of AAC, and some of the possible sources for their positive outlook. They connect this optimism with the concept presuming potential, which requires an unwavering belief that students have the potential to grow and make progress!   Key ideas this week:   The Power of Role-Playing Games (RPGs) in Education and Therapy: Jessica and Jaclyn emphasize how tabletop role-playing games, like Dungeons & Dragons, can be used for educational and therapeutic purposes. These games provide opportunities for language development, social skills practice, and creativity. Jessica shares how she incorporates elements of these games into her work with students, particularly those on the autism spectrum, helping them with communication and engagement.   Inclusivity in RPGs: The interview highlights the importance of creating inclusive spaces in role-playing games. Jaclyn discusses her work on making RPGs accessible to everyone, particularly younger players and those from diverse backgrounds. She and Jessica both emphasize the role of representation, where characters like Yumi, who uses an AAC device, offer both visibility and understanding of different abilities within the game.   Safe and Supportive Game Environments: Jessica and Jaclyn explore how to create a safe environment for players through tools like "Session Zero," where expectations are set, and safety tools like the X-card, which allow players to signal discomfort. This ensures that games are not only fun but also emotionally and socially supportive for players of all backgrounds and abilities.   Links from this Episode:   “Rolling with the Youth” by Jaclyn Lewis: https://www.indiepressrevolution.com/xcart/Rolling-with-the-Youth.html   Visit talkingwithtech.org to listen to previous episodes, find new resources, and more!   Help us develop new content and keep the podcast going strong! Shanghailanders (Spiegel & Grau: 2024), the debut novel from Juli Min, starts at the end: Leo, a wealthy Shanghai businessman, sees his wife and daughters off at the airport as they travel to Boston. Everyone, it seems, is unhappy. The novel then travels backwards through time, giving answers to questions revealed in later chapters, jumping from person to person: Leo, Eko, their daughters Yumi, Yoko and Kiko, and other peripheral members of the household, as we come to learn why Shanghailanders' core family is just so dysfunctional. In this interview, Juli and I talk about Shanghai, her decision to write the book in reverse chronological order, and what we gain when those from a non-white perspective write about expatriates. Juli Min is a writer and editor based in Shanghai. She studied Russian and comparative literature at Harvard University, and she holds an MFA in fiction from Warren Wilson. She was the founding editor of The Shanghai Literary Review and served as its fiction editor from 2016 to 2023.
