"The Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" Jacob Walsh and Jay Key returned from Japan with cart loads of toys, collectibles, and sofubi, representing everything from Godzilla to Ultraman to Spectreman to Zone Fighter. Whether it was at Mandarake or the Godzilla Store in Tokyo or Hobby Jungle or Astro-Zombies in Osaka, they managed to pick up cool items from Marusan, Medicom Toy, Bandai, FrogTree, Fewture Models, US Toys, Marmit, and many more. Not only do they talk toys - they spend a few minutes chatting about the two big pieces of movie news: Sam Neill joining the MonsterVerse and Toho confirming that the Yamazaki Godzilla project will be a direct sequel to Godzilla -1.0.---YHS on Monster Island is the premier kaiju / tokusatsu / Godzilla podcast - YouTube show, covering everything throughout the giant monster landscape, from films to fandom, television to toys. Byrd and Matt reach back down into the bottom of the barrell to discuss three obscure recent King Kong knock-offs from China, made to cash in on the recent Monsterverse films. In recent years, China has been churning out dozens and dozens of low budget straight to TV/streaming cheapie creature features. For this episode we'll discuss 2021's Monster Island, 2023's King Kong vs Giant Serpent (aka Battle of Snakes), and 2024's KingKong is Coming Back. In addition to offering our thoughts on the films, we also talk about China's recent b-movie boom. Relax and enjoy the discussion!
That wisecracking duo is back--at least on the MIFV podcast feed. The infamous Rito Revolto (or Rito Bandora, depending on who you talk to) and his cohort, some dude named Wade, go over the latest news on Monster Island. Then they take a request for some ultra-good music from Kevin Gomora, owner of The Markalite Lounge. All the while, they drive each other to the point of insanity before letting Nate get back on the air. What else is new? NOTE: Canonically, this takes place after season four and right at the beginning of season five. That will make more sense when season five starts. Starring: Nathan Marchand as Rito and Wade Damon Noyes as Kevin Gomora Written, directed, produced, and edited by Nathan Marchand MUSIC: “Game Over” by Jacob Lizotte “Tenfold True (Instrumental)” by Breaker “Ultraman Rap” (artist unknown) Check out Nathan's spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip, and Henshin Power V3! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In this little epilogue to episode 100, Michael Hamilton, a frequent guest host on MIFV and former co-host of Nate's on The Power Trip, takes a break from the reception for Jimmy and Kaguya's wedding by going to Nessie's Brasserie—and meets a depressed William H. George III! The two of them have a strange heart-to-heart until Nate comes in. Comedic drama ensues. This special episode was conceived and written by Michael Hamilton with Nathan Marchand. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! We're celebrating not one but two momentous occasions! First, MIFV has reached triple digits, baby! But more importantly, Jimmy and Kaguya are finally getting married after a whirlwind courtship. All of MIFV's past guest hosts were cordially invited, and you'll get to hear highlights like the couple's vows, Nate's emotional best man speech, and interviews from guests at the reception. However, before Jimmy can get to the chapel, he and his groomsmen have overcome one last hurdle during the bachelor party—a mysterious device that projects the dreams of the (in)famous Ichiro Miki onto the entire Island! The only way to shut it down is to watch the uncut Destroy All Planets (aka the original dubbed version of Gamera vs. Viras). Not only is it one of only two Showa Gamera movies not riffed on Mystery Science Theater 3000, it's the most important chapter of Jimmy's life. Well, before his wedding day, anyway. Listen to the original Gamera vs. Viras episode: https://tinyurl.com/MIFV-38-Gamera-vs-Viras. Check out Nathan's spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip, and Henshin Power V3! Jake and Jay finally complete their review of the Rebirth of Mothra trilogy with 1998's, Rebirth of Mothra 3. Can a re-designed King Ghidorah save the trilogy? Or will puppet dinosaurs, bad CGI, and a deathmatch wrestling legend doom the big bug's big finale? In addition, there's a lot of Godzilla and kaiju toy and sofubi news from a host of makers - X-Plus, Marusan, Sunguts, etc. - and from a ton of upcoming events such as Siccaluna Fest, Treasure Festa Online, and more. What a great time to be a kaiju fan!Lastly, it's a historic week on the pickups front as both Jake and Jay have two of their greatest hauls to date - and make a big dent in their Top 10 wishlists!
Hey, it's Thursday, and you know what that means. It's timeto prime those mazer cannons, fill up the Moonlight SY-III, and take a big ol' swig of Soma Berry juice, because we're about to hop on over to that home away from home for all you devoted disciples of Daikaiju. Yes, YHS on Monster Island with Jacob and Jay is about to be underway.
It's an unplanned live episode of YHS on Monster Island! Jake and Jay tackle a ton - including talking Rebirth of Mothra, the latest releases from Marusan and X-Plus, sneak peeks at Wonder Fest exclusives from Max Toy Japan and Geek Life, and they announce the 2025 Geoffrey's Award nominees for Kaiju Toy and Kaiju Toy Line of the Year (for 2024)! Enjoy!
Varan is...well...a movie. Jay unpacks decades of thoughts on this film in an impromptu therapy session - while sharing some fun (not sure that's the "right" word) facts about both the film and the kaiju. Most importantly, Jake and Jay talk toys - from Super Festival 90 reveals to the Hakaba Gallery Mechagodzilla Pop-up to the Nigata Special Effects event, there were a ton of toys that hit the market from all of our favorites: Marusan, Bullmark, Anraku Ansaku, NeoPlayerOne, Banpresto, Yamomark, USToys, and many more! Wait, did we just say Banpresto? Enjoy your trip to Monster Island!

Jake and Jay recap an eventful GODZILLA DAY 2024 that gave us huge news, amazing toy releases, another impressive short film (can you say "G-Claw"?), and much more! But it's not just Godzilla Day, as we saw more exclusives from Hobby Round 31, Hakaba Gallery, and the Tsuburaya Store. Plus, we have pickups! Have fun on Monster Island!
This episode of Horror Joy delves into the chilling world of The Babadook, a film that has been interpreted as both a study in grief and a queer icon.Joining us is S. You crazy kaiju kids and henshin heroes and heroines, it's time for another YHS on Monster Island - and this was is jam-packed with toys, news, and bouncy surf beats! Jay is joined by "Everyone's Favorite Kaiju Collector" Ryan Wilhelm (Collect All Monsters) and toy designer / artist Chas Foreman (Chazbro Toys, Kaiju Go!) to review the 1967 kaiju flick, Gappa: The Triphibian Monster, discuss a bevy of kaiju toy and sofubi releases from Marusan, X-Plus, M1, and more, go over the big reveals from Super Festival 89 in Japan, and lastly - but most importantly - unveil some exciting developments with Chazbro Toy's latest release, StarMonkeyGo! It's a fun one - so enjoy your time on the island!
Hello, Kaiju Lovers! Yes, Nate misremembered when the bonus episode on The Barbados Project was supposed to happen. But the good news is you got it sooner! Anyway, this low-budget found footage kaiju horror film is great warm-up to the next mainline episode on Trollhunter. It can be viewed (again) on Tubi, but it originally played the film festival circuit and on the obscure streaming service POV Horror. It's a rare film produced in the island nation of Barbados, let alone a kaiju film. But there are reasons it's flown under the kaiju fandom's radar and the Island houses none of the creatures in it. Why? Listen to find out! For full shownotes, including a bibliography of sources, read this episode's blog on the MIFV website: https://monsterislandfilmvault.com/index.php/2024/09/23/bonus-episode-18-the-barbados-project-monster-island-world-tour/. Hey there, listener...question...how come no one talks about Neo Ultra Q? We need to fix that. Jake and Jay breakdown the 12-episode sequel to the groundbreaking Ultra Q (1966) - released 47 years later after the original - but capturing the vibe better than it had any right to; but what did our hosts think? Also, it may be after the convention season but that's not stopping sofubi powerhouses like Marusan, Bullmark, and USToys from releasing amazing items! Enjoy another episode of YHS on Monster Island!

Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the longest MIFV episode ever (of all time), Nate is joined by Daniel DiManna of the Godzilla Novelization Project (no surprise why it's long) to discuss the most underestimated of G-films: Godzilla vs. Gigan (aka Godzilla on Monster Island). They discuss every possible aspect of this film, from its under-funded production to its quirky yet iconic dub and everything in between—and we do mean everything. But the most surprising part of this epic episode is Nate and Danny's discussion of the historical context in which it was made—a time of market penetration by foreign corporations and the explosion of the popularity of theme parks—the fascinating unmade drafts of its script written by both Shinichi Sekizawa and Takeshi Kimura, and the brilliant meta commentary it makes on Godzilla as a pop culture icon. “There's something funny going on” in today's episode of MIFV! Netflix's Ultraman: Rising (2024) - a partnership between the studio and Tsuburaya Productions, with animation from ILM - is making some waves with its heart-first approach, and excellent animation as it tries to finally get Ultraman to be a viable property with the American audience. But - as YHS on Monster Island host, Jacob Walsh, asks: is it even Ultraman? Our two hosts debate the merits of the film through the lens of a tokusatsu-loving adult, a child, and a Tsuburaya/Netflix decision-maker; and its a rare opportunity to see the duo of daikaiju devotees, Jacob and Jay, disagree on a movie. Other than Ultraman: Rising, the team briefly speaks about two other films the recently watched - The Great Buddha Arrival (2018) and The Primevals (2023). Oh yeah, there's also lots of toy pick-ups - including a Top 10 Wishlist get from Jay and the world's smallest Godzilla collectible (not really...but maybe). Enjoy!
This is the second half of Jay's "Pair o' Parodies" and we finish it off with Nikkatsu's 2010 film, DEATH KAPPA! The Tomoo Haraguchi brain child is unique - even for low-budget kaiju parody films - but does it deliver? Bigger question: why aren't there any Hangylos toys? But Jake and Jay do more than talk about Death Kappa...they have a YHS on Monster Island exclusive toy reveal for Max Toy's Kaiju Go! event exclusive release! You don't want to miss this! And that's not all, folks! We get kaiju news (the MonsterVerse has a new director, right?), toy pick-ups, and 10 things you need to know about kappa! Enjoy your visit to YHS on Monster Island!
Nate's cloned “pseudo-sister,” Jessica Shaw (aka Crystal Lady) takes some specially-selected tourists on a, well, tour of Monster Island, and on their last stop at the Denham Theater, a smelly, frumpy girl literally bumps into her. She is Fausta Bevan, a missing member of Jessica's tour group. She's annoying but also kind. Unfortunately, she's also a Bug Lady—who isn't here at the behest of the Nachfalter and the Church of Mothrianity, and for the first time, Jessica doesn't want to destroy her foe. But can she do it? Written by Nathan Marchand. Read and performed by Sarah Marchand. Check out Nathan's spinoff podcasts, The Henshin Men and The Power Trip. Henshin Power V3 coming July 10, 2024 (Ultraman Day)! Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In what might be the most subversive and inspirational episode of MIFV yet, Elijah Thomas (Kaiju Conversation) joins Nate to discuss the infamous South Korean “kaiju” (notice the air quotes?) movie, Reptilian. This is, in fact, a “remake” of Yongary, Monster from the Deep, and it's often called “The Room of kaiju films.” But Elijah says it's more than that. He even goes so far as to say that if it wasn't for this movie, the world wouldn't have BTS or Squid Game. How? Listen to find out! Then stay for our Toku Topic, which is something Elijah has become an expert in: Korean kaiju cinema. Read Jimmy's Notes on this episode on the MIFV website! The pod welcomes its first ever Singaporean guest, Tania De Rozario, whose memoir "Dinner on Monster Island" comes out next week! At the time that Tania was growing up in Singapore, positive representations of queer people were literally illegal on public television. Since this was long before streaming platforms and the prevalence of the internet, this meant that all of Tania's childhood teachings about "homosexuality" came from her Evangelical-convert mother. Things culminated in Tania being subjected to a gay exorcism (or as it was called at the time, a "casting out") when she was just twelve years old. Tania, who now lives in Vancouver, shares this and other stories from her past with a good deal of perspective, and an admirable amount of levity. Plus, we discuss how the horror genre is intrinsically linked with queerness, which is a real bummer if you hypothetically can't watch scary movies because they give you nightmares HYPOTHETICALLY.Follow Tania on Instagram at @_tania.de.rozario_ (make note of all the underscores and periods!) and at @TaniaDeRozario on Twitter. "Dinner on Monster Island" comes out February 6th; find out where to pre-order/purchase it at linktr.ee/TaniaDeRozario, but also check your local bookstores!
Nate survived another harrowing year on Monster Island, and now it's time to renegotiate his contract. But he's shocked to learn that, while he was sleeping, the Island's security systems failed, allowing multiple kaiju to escape back to their home countries. Even with the Legal Action Team on his case, Nate and Jimmy can't avoid having the Board mandate that they spend a year chasing down these monsters in Uber-Moguera and return them to the Island. Indignant and obsessive, Nate goes to confront the Island's “zookeeper,” whom he suspects is on the Board's payroll—and things don't go how he expected. Happy 2024! Jake and Jay are back reviewing Daiei's 1962 film, THE WHALE GOD, which was brought to North America for the first time (this year, by the way!) by SRS Cinema. We all know that the "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" is an expert on "killer animal" films - but where does this Kojiro Hongo and Takashi Shimura-led entry land on his spectrum: is it more Jaws? Or more Orca? Also, M1, Marusan, and U.S.Toys were active at Super Festival 87 in Japan - what gems did they unveil to the sofubi-crazed collecting community? And did Jake already knock off something from his Top 10 Wishlist? And did Jay have his best single pick-up of the 2023 right before the holidays? Enjoy this episode of YHS on Monster Island!

One thing is for sure, the kaiju fandom and film critics alike are going crazy for this new Toho release – and its winning over fans and smashing records like no other film in the franchise. But – is it a perfect film? Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In the (overdue) season 3 finale, Nate is forced to deal with Cameron Winter's “Christmas gift”: the Asylum's infamous Monster Island. It's supposedly a “mockbuster” of 2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters, but even by the Asylum's standards, that's a stretch. To unravel the legal loopholes and shenanigans that went into making this...movie, Nate brings on the Island's star lawyer, Raymund Martin, and the man's paralegal, Gary Steward. Not only do they riff this half-competent (and therefore, boring) “kaiyu” flick into the ground, they give you a crash course in the history of the Asylum and mockbusters. Nate's contractual obligations are now complete! Beforehand, Nate delivers his final report as the nonexistent “media master” to Mr. Gold, who reveals a few tantalizing details about what's been happening on the Island lately. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! In this special episode, Nate attends the Monster Island premiere of Godzilla: Minus at the Denham Theater to interview totally-chosen-at-random fans standing in line to see the film. He meets everyone from lawyers to mad scientists to Russian robot comedians (oh my!). What's crazy is what Nate had to leave on the cutting room floor, so expect an extended “director's cut” of this special around the time of the film's U.S. premiere December 1! Guest Cast Damon Noyes as Raymund Martin, Gary Steward, Kevin Gomora, and Russ-Bot Daniel DiManna as Dr. Dante Dourif Olivia Reed as Bonnie Lass Written by Nathan Marchand.
